It’s The Final Fantasy V You Know With More Artwork From Yoshitaka Amano

By Spencer . March 28, 2013 . 12:11am

Next week, you will be able to play Final Fantasy V on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Final Fantasy V for iOS is really Final Fantasy V Advance so you have the Cannoneer, Gladiator, Oracle, and Necromancer plus a super boss to defeat that’s more powerful than Omega.

Final Fantasy V for iOS has reworked graphics (see some comparison screenshots here) and Yoshitaka Amano’s artwork for portraits.

    TIME FOR SOME /BUTZ/

      Okay, to be serious here.

I really dislike their new attachment to these “smoothed” sprites. They don’t look good. They’re not classy. And they don’t help the obvious nostalgia factor they want to go for. Just because it’s “HD” doesn’t mean they need to get rid of the charm.

Second, why yes, I do like the portraits. The portraits are cool.

Third, it’s FFV– what’s not to love? While the price is, yes, gonna be high, let’s be frank with ourselves. Your choices right now are literally A) The broken PSN version that isn’t even Vita compatible (due to being unable to save), B) the PS1 version, which is currently around $25 new, and which if you buy used, you’re subjecting yourself to risks of scratches and non-working discs, while also again, not having any portability. You will get FFVI out of it, though! And C) The out of print GBA version, which you’re gonna be looking for a while to find any reliable seller, unless if you can manage to find it in a store, and is going to cost more than the iOS version regardless at any rate.

Not to say that SE’s pricing habits are still deplorable (I really want Dimensions go down to $10 like the Android version), you’re not gonna have many choices if you actually want the game to be portable.

Of course, I’m personally glad I managed to get those GBA versions while they were still being printed…

Heaven forbid SE did an actual remake instead of DS ports and sprite touch-ups. I’m getting quite sick of their reliance on nostalgia instead of fresh ideas. Edios seem to be the only division of their company outputting fresh or rebooted (properly) IPs.

    • Ace Trainer Chris

It would’ve been nicer if they actually did a remake similar to FFIV on the DS. It’s an absolute shame that V’s not getting the effort IV got on the DS. This seems like more of a cheap ass port with “prettier” graphics, more than anything else.

    • Barrylocke89

Gotta fund Final Fantasy XIV:Take Two somehow! :P

    • echokanon

I’m looking forward to Drakengard 3 though. Although it seems like not all of Caval team would be joining in development but it should still be good. On the other hand, I have pretty much gave up on SE…

      • Peeka Chu

Yeah, there’s some PS2 nostalgia that I welcome the exploitation of. I ADORE that series. Up there with Wild Arms and Koudelka/ SH.

    • Adam I.

Normally I’d agree but…I seriously prefer this to the DS style FF remake graphics myself…

      • CirnoTheStrongest

Glad I’m not the only one!

The only thing I don’t like about this would be those portraits….I’m probably in a super minority, but I really don’t care much for Yoshitaka Amano’s art. It’s very detailed and everything, but I just don’t like the style of it.

Otherwise, I am GLAD they didn’t go the III/IV route with the sprites.

    • KiTA

Uh… No? Dragon Quest 7 just got a complete 3DS remake that uses an all new engine — the next generation version of the DQ9 engine . It also re-balanced the game, redid major parts for flow, and changed up the class system (which wasn’t terribly different from FF5′s) to make it less broken.

Oh, and they also remade Dragon Quest Monsters 1 recently, including every single “Mons” genre improvement that the series has gained over the past 10 years in it, as well as retaining the roguelike random dungeon stuff.

Square Enix can still do good things, unfortunately the people they put in charge of Final Fantasy have no editorial control whatsoever, and it really shows. If they had released a Dragon Quest port like this, there would be people out of work today. And I actually *LIke* this FF5 port — it looks good. Of course, I like FF Dimensions too, and I realize that it’s going to look a lot better on an actual device as opposed to a youtube video.

I wonder if this is really all FFV is getting… I’ve been waiting for a FFV remake for so long, this can’t be all. At least if they had used the sprites from FFI/II/IV for PSP it wouldn’t be so bad.

    Release it on Android damnit.

  • komiko12

I thought Krile was named Cara in Japan? Nevertheless Faris looks more manly then Bartz in the video.

  • gamerdude

Where is that SE ambition they used to have?

First they turn XIV into a cheap wow-wannabe and now the classic V gets this slapdash port that genuinely looks like it was put together by 2 guys over a weekend. =(

III and IV were some of the best game remakes in recent memory and in comparison his just looks disrespectful to the original masterpiece.

  • Ixbran

Why didn’t they just drop the original sprite designs and make their sprites in this version of the game match their amano artwork, i mean really would it be so hard?

    • Pockystix

see, that’d actually take a lot more work. They had to rush this out ASAP.

gotta make them quick nostalgia dollars to fund the fixes to their MMOs and sequels to Lightning’s story. . .

    • KiTA

Yes, actually, it would. Amano’s art is very stylized and does not sprite well. In addition, if they did that they would have all kinds of autistic over-entitled gamers whining about how dare they change the sprites, etc etc.

      • Sylveria

Kinda like your preemptive whining about their hypothetical whining?

  • Pockystix

honestly, I’ve went on about my opinions about the style in this port already. And I think a lot of people just really want to see FFV get a respectful remake.Considering the fact that we’ve already had 2 ports of FFV (one bad, and one great), a remake would’ve been well deserved for this under-appreciated title.

Again, SE is playing it overly safe where they need to take bigger risks, and pushing away from their consumers interests with things like Lightning Returns. Really, I don’t know who was clamoring to see yet another port of FFV, and on the iOS of all things.

Maybe the new Leadership can breath some new life into the company, and we’ll start to see more projects like Drakengard 3 being made. I don’t mind bringing back the nostalgia, but at least show the effort of actually remaking, or giving proper follow-ups to the games. Although considering the company has experienced big losses from their recent console and pc games, I can imagine they will continue to play turtle, and not allow their actual quality titles to see the light of day.

Oh, and I’m still waiting on Bravely Default, it would help to get around to localizing that gem when there is still legitimate interest, and the 3DS is really picking up in popularity. Just saying, you need money, and that would make you some.

It’s out now, $16 is way too much. I hate the Square Enix tax

  • Raharu95

I just cannot Dig this new Artwork… Why is Bartz wearing a dress? And not just any dress, that’s the dress my Grandmother wears, no joke :(

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

At 0:20 Bartz has purple lips like Cecil.

    • Sylveria

A man needs to know how to accessorize, girlfriend *snaps fingers*

  • maggosh

Psh, iPhone games. I prefer physical controls, thank you very much.

  • Zero_Destiny

Hhmmm Looks like I was right with my guess that the portraits would sync up better once placed on a textbox on the bottom of the screen. Though it’s still kinda sloppy looking D: … but better looking then when it was on top. Anyways though call me crazy, but I think the battles look really nice.

  • http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/mgbenz mgbenz

How did they went from the anniversary editions of FFI and FFII and FFIV Complete Collection to THIS? Those character sprites look really ugly and completely devoid of charm. What happened to my White Mage kitty Krile!? :(

And the interface is so incredibly bland and unproffessional. Like it was made on flash or something.
