Sega Made A Puzzle Quest Spinoff For Puyo Puyo

By Spencer . April 8, 2013 . 5:48am

Puyo Puyo, Sega’s glob matching competitive puzzle game, is going the Puzzle Quest route with Puyo Puyo Quest. This upcoming iOS game has players match blobs on a grid to defeat returning Puyo Puyo characters and some new ones.

The game layout is actually like the extremely successful smartphone game Puzzle & Dragons, but instead of swapping blobs you link them together. When you connect red blobs you activate red monsters to attack. Linking purple puyos makes purple monsters attack and so forth. Also like Puzzle & Dragons the game has a luck factor since puyos can automatically connect when a new row falls down.

Puyo Puyo Quest is slated for release this spring as a free to play game with additional virtual items available for purchase.

I’m seeing some character in there that haven’t been shown for a while. The Siamese cats for PP2, for starters…

…I really want it but it’s also iOS and I has no way to play iOS currently…

    Ah, the mobile game era.

Dominated by Apple, tiny touch screens, minimal effort ports, microtransations, region locking, atrocious drm, and… and…

Sigh. And I like PuyoPuyo, too. A lot. It is one of my favourite SEGA franchises. I eat up stuff like PuyoPuyo from SEGA, Panel de Pon from Nintendo, Magical Drop, ect.

But I’ll probably never be able to play this game even if I did want to bother with getting an iOS device.

Looks like an awful Puzzle Quest clone rather than a Puyo Pop game, so I don’t think I’ll worry too much if I never get to play it.

Anyone find it weird that it’s for iOS yet the phone render they have at the beginning is anything but an Apple product? At any rate, I love puyopuyo and am crossing my fingers that this appears for Android too.

This makes me very happy! ^_^

this doesn’t look like a real puyo game – i mean besides it being an rpg, dragging to link puyos doesn’t seem like the same gameplay. Are there any real puyo mobile games?

Keep in mind Americans would just whine for Easy MODO in Puyo Puyo, and this might be the answer for their prayers.

Probably not EZ MODO enough here, honestly…

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

They do release one on 3DS which have the same root as the old ones.

That’s the mobile game industry for you, sadly.

Lots of cheaply made games and ripoffs.

Has Puyo Puyo been Bejeweled?! (and Puzzle Quested for added offense)

Would be nice if Sega and Compile Hearts worked together and brought new Madou Monogatari with Arle, and maybe Amitie and Ringo too.

This whole situation kinda reminds me of Bubble Bobble’s main character. He was once a child, but got turned into a dragon… He became human in the end… but his games as a dragon were more popular and he got turned into a dragon forever. The End.

At least we got mobile phone Puyo Puyo spin-offs… in Japan.
