Gaming’s Frailest Hero Falls On To PlayStation Vita

The explorer in Spelunker is a strange hero. While he’s prepared to explore caves with a flashlight helmet, a tiny fall will kill him. Spelunker Collection includes the original Spelunker (plus arcade and console versions) and Spelunker II: 23 Keys in one package. Tozai Games also added new modes like a time attack where you have infinite lives, a score attack mode, leaderboards that upload replays for top scores, and a collection of Spelunker artwork.

If all of this sounds familiar you probably remember Spelunker Collection from January when it was released on PS3. The game is coming to Vita on April 25 with a cross by discount. If you already purchased the PS3 version you can get the Vita release for 600 yen ($6), half off the 1,200 yen ($12) price. The discount works both ways so if you purchase the Vita version first and decide you want the PS3 release too it will only be an additional 600 yen ($6).

    that game is terrible.

This actually doesn’t sound familiar to me, as it doesn’t seem to have been released outside of Japan. That… might be worth specifying.

Also, I had no idea there was an arcade Spelunker 2. There’s a different, deeply strange Spelunker sequel for Famicom that has character classes, a morality stat, and if you fall in a pit you literally end up in hell and are condemned to eternal damnation if your morality isn’t high enough.

Aww, Japan; you embraced Spelunker to the point you even have a local slang that means “getting injured too easily”.

Despite its wonkiness, I’ve always had a soft spot for Spelunker. The one thing that made it extremely frustrating, though, was how easy it is to accidentally fall off of ropes. Spelunker HD on PS3 has a “rope assist” option you can toggle on which prevents this from happening, and it basically makes Spelunker HD a freaking AWESOME game. I’m hoping that one of the versions of Spelunker included in this compilation does the same, as it might mean the difference between a purchase and a pass for me.

Spelunker HD was one of the best COOP experiences ive ever had. It was tons of fun trying to finish the game and complete the jigsaw with 3 other friends online. The sense of exploration, tension and constant threath, summed with the light hearted art style made it feel like very unique experience, somewhat like a fusion of Mario and Dark Souls. I wish ive known this game earlier.

  • awesome game, but i also expect Spelunker HD on PS Vita

The best thing about Spelunker is its Famicom cartridge. It has a LED on it which shines when I turn the game on. Awesome.
