Portable Super Nintendo Can Be Upgraded To Play Famicom, Genesis, And GBA Games

By Spencer . April 20, 2013 . 3:02pm

imageForget about a Virtual Console, the Poke Fami DX can play retro games. Well, your retro Japanese games. This portable Super Famicom has a 3.5 inch screen and TV out so you can play Treasure Hunter G on a big screen. An adapter lets you plug in a second controller for Secret of Mana 2 or Fighter’s History action.

What’s neat is adapters for Famicom, Mega Drive (the Japanese name for the Sega Genesis will be available too. A GBA adapter is scheduled for release this summer.

The Poke Fami DX measure out to be 18 (width) x 9 (height) x 4 (depth) cm and weighs 320 grams. An AC adapter, controller connector, stereo AV cable, stand, cleaning cloth, and the system are included in the package. A lithium battery powers the system when you’re on the go. Adapters for other hardware like the Famicom, Mega Drive, and GBA are sold separately.

But does it run ROMs or real cartridges?

By the way, I just finished Soul Hackers. I’m really happy.

    • Josué Pedro Soares

In the back there’s something that looks like the place you would insert the cartridges. So I think it does.

My god, the thing looks like its 10 feet thick.

If no one has stopped it’s manufacturing and media yet….i suppose so

It plays the actual retail cartridges, so yeah. I don’t see why it wouldn’t be. We have similar things being sold in the US for the Genesis and it’s even officially supported by Sega.

The only thing that has ever popped these ‘players’ up on company radar has been if tech patents have been infringed to emulate. The systems are old enough that the days of pirate carts should indeed pretty much be dead, so the only thing you can use them for is as noted — legitimate software products.

What? it looks like you can put VHS on it?

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

More like an 8-track tape. I mean, this is not that big for a VHS Tape to be inserted!

Mother,Mother 2/Earthbound and Mother 3 on the same system.I like that! Never liked M1+2,that gba version.

    • DCBlackbird

      How was that version?

      • Rogerrmark

It actually has some bugs. You can even beat Giygas without the Pray move :x

  • Pombar

Genesis was also called Mega Drive in Europe.
There’s lots of these things around. I feel like we need constant comparison pieces detailing how many of them are actually up to snuff, what their respective pros and cons are, etc.

    • 324234

You could play SNES games on a small portable machine more than 10 years ago: GBA.
