  • Crimson_Cloud

First Mana Khemia is one of my favorite RPGs. Second one was good but the first one had superb cast and among them -

I prefer the second honestly I loved the system and gameplay improvement and I was glad that Flay was an adult and teacher. The difference between characters isn’t that much but if you use your nostalgia love then probably will hate any new character that comes after.

I also liked how they divided the cast and give focus to two different groups, then one you complete the two story modes the two groups merge together. I was a good way to improve the storyline by forcing two different point of view.

I preferred the interaction between the characters and the storyline in the first game, but I did like the pace of the battles in the second game (with all of the various combination attacks). While the second one may have had two different storylines and larger cast it didn’t interest me as much as the first one’s story or cast (Anna, Vayne, Roxas).

The character interaction was one thing that Mana Khemia was superior but the main storyline was so dull. I mean at the end they reveal that the teacher was evil and the main character was special but just that.

I did prefer Mana Khemia 2 because Ritcher was a cool villain and Ulrika’s story was about her mana, then at the end they reveal who was the one behind everything and instead of a completly serious event, the game show you the best of it, the humor. The funny dialogues and the anticlimatic event were so hilarous that made me laugh, it was an strong impression for me.

Slight spoilers following, but I’ll avoid specifics as much as possible.

If ‘the teacher’ is who I think you mean, then I don’t think it’s about being evil, but about trying to prevent evil (someone they cared about was murdered, you know, and to their knowledge, it could happen to anyone and everyone). The ‘bad’ end of Mana Khemia has really stuck with me more than 90% of games that just try to wrap up a story for the sake of having a game come to an end, because I saw it as the one the most impact. I’m not sure that ‘being special’ really encompasses Vayne’s character either…

The villain motivations in MK2 really pale in comparison to that. The two main villains over the main part of the story were rather abstract (and seriously, Flay probably does more harm than anyone else overall, and he even admits to being a villain…), and the masterminds revealed near the end were actually just ridiculously thoughtless. The rapid-fire approach to jokes didn’t really work for me either. When every single character quest ended up being a drawn out joke, they stopped being funny and started getting tedious. And none of it was as funny as any of the Muppy events from the first game anyway, I thought.

Not to sound like I’m ripping on MK2 too much, I thought it was a good game, but also a real step down from the first. I’m a firm believer of comedy reaching its fullest potential when mixed in with other approaches to story telling. I feel like when you start expecting it, it’s not enjoyable, like being told that something surprising is about to happen and that you should be surprised by it.

More than anything else, though, I really wonder why they are bundling a PS2 classic that is a sequel at all. I feel like this would make more sense if Ayesha had MK1 bundled with it. Even if it’s included, and even if you aren’t required to know what happened in the previous game, aren’t people put off when they get titles in a series out of order? I’m all for EITHER of the Mana Khemia games regaining popularity (I hear they actually didn’t do so well in Japan originally), as the first is easily my favorite Atelier game of all.

Old news Siliconera. But anyway, SO EXCITED. Will buy the Japanese version. I agree with Crimson_Cloud, Mana Khemia had an amazing cast. I’m still entranced with them to this day, though the second’s cast is not far behind. Maybe this will spur Gust/Koei Tecmo to make a third?! A reunion game?!

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Yessshhhhh, Mana Khemia 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Dunno how I feel playing it in japanese though but I’m still excited. Day one buy.

  • Andrew Arndt

  • Spirit Macardi

    Nippon Ichi! America! Please!

    • DesmaX

I think this is Tecmo Koei business now

      • Spirit Macardi

Not Mana Khemia 1 or 2. Those were brought over by Nippon Ichi alone, so I’m thinking they retain the rights for it in North America.

        • DesmaX

          My bad, then

        • Pyrofrost

It was published by NISA and distributed by Koei (now TK). So I believe there would be an agreement in place to allow TK to take over, if they plan to do a release like this one in NA.

  • Philip Irwin

Still waiting for Mana Khemia 3 GUST. MAKE IT HAPPEN DAMN IT.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

While i don’t want to be overhype,………….possible Mana Khemia 3?O_o

  • LETS PRAY FOR LOCALIZATION

Razeluxe is smexy in his school uniform.

  • Hikaru Lighthalzen

seems there are connection between the 2 games

  • William Cox

I’d like to see Mana Khemia 3. Though I think the main villain would obviously be the Light Mana. He’s pissed off at the fact that he was defeated by humans again and impolite ones at that. He gets into a fight with the Dark Mana and wins and forces his plan to bring the Manas back to the Mana World. And out of anger imprisons the Manas so that they can’t rebel against him. So new characters, and characters from Mana Khemia 1 & 2 join up to go into the Mana World and save the imprisoned Manas and permanently stop the Light Mana.
