Road Rash Inspired Road Redemption Confirmed For Wii U

By Ishaan . April 23, 2013 . 11:10am

In case you missed the news, indie developer DarkSeas Games are working on a spiritual successor to ‘90s bike racer Road Rash. The game, titled Road Redemption, is being funded via Kickstarter and is in development for PC, MAC and Linux. This morning, DarkSeas also confirmed a Wii U version.

Road Redemption will have a variety of modes, including Combat Race, Police Escape, Assassin, Convoy Assault, Escape from Enemy Territory (racing across rooftops!) and Ambush. Multiplayer modes will include both free-for-all as well as team-based missions.

Road Redemption’s fighting system will involve counters and parries, with gunplay playing a minor role in combat as well. (DarkSeas point out that there will be no auto-aim while using a gun.) Additionally, forcing your opponent into traffic will play a major role in the game as well, similar to Road Rash.

You can learn more about Road Redemption on its Kickstarter page. DarkSeas say that, a few months after they release the game, they will also make their source code and Unity engine project files available to the public.

Is it just me or is the Wii U actually getting a fair bit of indie support?

    • Caleb

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Unity games are easily portable to the WiiU. Apparently there is free software that does the conversion, well, at least there was at GDC.

I hope that means Surgeon Simulator 2013 comes to Wii U. I’d love to see all the rage people have about it on their Miiverse page :3

        • Caleb

I’m all for that and many other games coming to the wii U. It would be neat to see something like the steam green light and humble indie bundles implemented as well.

Well Nintendo has been doing alot to get indie’s on their side. Everything from completely restructuring their eShop, to the requirements needed, and even making partnerships to provide indie with all the tools they need. And with the way the industry has been heading theres a good chance that some of these indie’s are gonna become third party companies in the future which could bode well for Nintendo support.

OMG i want this so much…
If this don’t reach the goal by the end date i swear i will pledge the remaining amount to reach the goal no matter how much it’s.

    • Steven Lamphere

I truly hope it doesn’t come to that though. It only has 5 days to go and it still needs $52,540…sigh I really hope this goes through, I don’t want to be super excited only to find it won’t happen

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

I’m not sure if i will do that anymore…

I was really excited for that game back then and i really would have pledged over 50K back then, but since then i saw that they wouldn’t release that games on PS3.

I don’t own a Xbox and i would prefer by far to play a game like that on my console than on my PC.

Also i don’t remember much of Road rash since i didn’t play that games for a really long time, but from what i remember all that game was about was to finish race and try to make other fall off their motorcycle.
I loved that, but that was 20 years ago, nowaday i would expect a bit more from a modern “Road Rash”.

Still i hate to go back on my word, so i might still do it…

It sounds like a lot of fun, I’m kind of interested in it.
Also, yay for indie titles on the Wii U~.

  • idrawrobots

I have an idea, call it Road “Dead” Redemption.

    • Namuro

You beat me to it, I was going to call it Red Road Redemption. LOL

  • alixraen

I’m kinda interested whatever happened to the original IP, who holds the rights to Road Rash now?

    • SilvaStarRippa

EA has had the license since the original Road Rash back in the early Genesis days. Although arguably, the games got worse after Road Rash 3DO, so maybe that’s why they haven’t brought it back.

      That or…you know, they’re EA.

  • Natat

Hahaha wow, now this I didn’t see coming. Road Rash was so fun back in the day.

  • Badr Alomair

Road Dead Redemption. I’m sorry I said this.

    • Touma

hahaha i have to keep myself from saying red dead redemption every time i try to say road redemption.

  • デ オオカミ

It sounds and already looks fantastic. I’ve been a fan of Road Rash since the very start and if they’re going for the experience that we’ve been dying for all this time, then I’ll be playing the hell out of it. ^^

this looks better than i expected

  • SDDMN

For some odd reason, this game makes me want a Courier Crisis remake for the Wii U and PS3.

    Color me interested.

  • theduckofjustice

the best freaking road rash ever made was on the n64, it looks mediocre but the gameplay was phenomenal!
    Can’t wait for this game!

  • Namuro

Hmm, that Mario poster in the meeting room… Maybe we’ll be seeing shells and bananas in this game? Just imagine the mess the blue shell will make.

The game looks interesting though. I’ve always enjoyed silly violent games like this (there was that ESPN Extreme Games as well, where you get to smash your fellow competitors in the face and watch them tumble). Let’s see how this one turns out.
