If You Like Cave Story And Gradius Check Out A.N.N.E.

By Spencer . April 24, 2013 . 2:00pm

A.N.N.E. caught my attention when Matt discovered the Metroidvania-like game at PAX East. The pixilated robots are reminiscent of Cave Story, but what makes A.N.N.E. unique is you can fly around in a spaceship called The Great Whale. While you have guns to shoot enemies, you can also pick up and throw objects at enemies. That’s an interesting twist to the shoot ’em up genre.

A.N.N.E. is in development for PC and maybe Vita, Ouya or Wii U if GamesByMo can raise enough money on Kickstarter. There’s also a page on Steam Greenlight with an extended look at A.N.N.E.

    looks gr8!

I saw this a couple weeks ago and thought it looked pretty interesting. Didn’t know there was gonna be a KS campaign for it. I’m hoping it makes it to the Vita and Wii U stretch goals.

  • dragoon_slayer12

I would love this on VITA, but I feel that it would benefit greatly from the 3ds’ 3d

    • DarthSithZero

Why? I dont think this game require 3D or touch functions

      • dragoon_slayer12

A lot of side scrollers and sprite games look good in 3d. Cave story, all the 3d classics, mutant Mudd, mighty switch force, the layers and depth just make the game pop. So much more than 3d games (Mario 3d land, star fox, Luigi’s mansion, not that the 3d is bad)

  • Solomon_Kano

If I had 10k to blow, I’d totally do it just so I could be listed as “Big Boss”. Alas.

This looks amazing though. I pray they reach the PSN stretch goal.

  • DarthSithZero

    Must come to Vita

  • Shane Guidaboni

I played this at PAX East and it was great! I’m going to support the Kickstarter.

Honestly, all the games that this developer made after cavestory never really had anything unique or interesting about them that caught my eye, but i’d say A.N.N.E is a spiritual successor in the works. It looks like everything cavestory was except light years better. Being able to lvl up. Having more places to explore. Maybe even a more fleshed out story that will take hours upon completion. Sprites combined with the environments have a retro yet up to date feel. Not limited to only a few sets of weapons. Upgraded shooting mechanics. This game could even be one of the best 2D shooter in years. It brings out the potential cave story had. One word. Awesome.

  • This game reminds me of Master Blaster

    • Testsubject909

Sweet. Always good to see someone who knows of that game.

Edit: Damn stupid pet toad/frog jumping in a hole with an awaiting awesome tank… I mean… Wait, no that’s what I mea.

  • Testsubject909

And now another kickstarter for me to lose money on.

    Ah well…

  • Göran Isacson

Oh yes, this is going right onto my credit card.

  • CirnoLakes

It looks cute but. But why does it have to be another Damsel in Distress story?

    • Göran Isacson

Quite true, but if the meets its second stretch-goal it will have a “gender-swap” mode where you play as A.N.N.E rescuing the boy robot instead.

I’m guessing that people who make these retro games want it to have a retro-storyline, and kidnapped loved one is as retro as it gets.
