First Look At Date A Live: Rinne Utopia Looks Like A Regular Dating Game

By Spencer . April 26, 2013 . 1:27am

OK, so it makes sense that Date A Live: Rinne Utopia is a visual novel-like dating game. After all, the series is about Shido sealing spirits within girls by making them fall in love with him. However, I hoped since Sting, the developers of Knights in the Nightmare and Evolution, was involved we’d get something deeper. Sting usually makes complicated, but interesting games!

That doesn’t look like the case since the first trailer looks like a run of the mill visual novel. Oh well, at least Date A Live fans will be able to interact with a new character, Rinne, who was made exclusively for the PlayStation 3 game.

Date A Live: Rinne Utopia comes out on June 27 for PlayStation 3.

    Hopefully they soon show gameplay

    • DyLaN

Just a reminder, DAL:RU is visual novel/dating sim and they usually don’t have “gameplay”. Think of it as a novel with pics, music and choices.

    • I read while ago it was a mix between adventure and another genre

  • DyLaN

The OP was pretty good. The art is pretty good too. (I like the way the Spirits pupil are drawn and not to mention Kurumi clock eye.) And is tht Rinne spirit form I saw there?

Again, another game we will never get :(

  • TheExile285

Been watching the anime. Tohka is basically the definition of moe and tsundere

    • DyLaN

You forgot abt the “do not piss her off” part XD

      • M’iau M’iaut

He mentioned the T word. Unless that’s an edit.

It is the Y word we never ever mention on the site.

        • DyLaN

Normal tsunderes don’t pull out a BFS and go on a rampage….

          • M’iau M’iaut

            They don’t?

          • I haven’t seen SnS and Wht-tht-anime-name-again. But yeah, I think you are right.

          • M’iau M’iaut

TORADORA! Looks for a sharp pointy object to smack upside your head.

          • Testsubject909

Sorry… thinking back on some early Tsundere…. No… I can see them doing that… Love Hina for example… She’d totally do that.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Ya Naru would, but she still showed far more dere than a lot of the most tropey tsun tsuns do today. Even my choices below know which boy they wish to marry. Others just wish to make it as painful for the boy as humanly possible. So many are bitchy just to be bitchy.

          • Maybe I need to watch more anime with tsundere :X

I just remember another one! Does the girls from IS count?

          • M’iau M’iaut

Video Girl Ai is more the magical girlfriend/nadesico trope and I’s is to an extent but there is certainly a little of the tsun in those girls.

          • I believe I am talking abt Infinite Stratos…. Or am I missing something here?

          • M’iau M’iaut

Oh the lovelies of internet shortcuts — thought u meant this.

          • Visa Vang

The main girl Shinonono Houki is an tsundere so yeah, IS can be count.

  • Neppygear

Visual novel = lots of wonderful Tsunako art, which = good things.

I just want to shout “F you Compileheart”. I’m sad for Sting. I knew it! the moment that they were bought by CH this was gonna be their fate ):

    • farios

You do know that STING has been making pure VNs for PS3 even before Super Sting was formed, right?

Also STING still stand as a lone company they’re just making a brand together with IF (CH’s parent company).

      • Kevin Schwarz

In the end, it doesn’t matter, for us western fans. VNs aren’t our stuff, I mean in terms of the market.

      • IvanAzure

Really? I didn’t know about Sting making PS3 VNs. Which ones did they make? :)

        • M’iau M’iaut

Not sure on the PS3 VNs, but most of the Heaven games can certainly be considered hybrids. Riveria being probably the clearest VN-inspired in terms of game play.

          • IvanAzure

Yeah, I thought about Riviera as really close to the VN aesthetics indeed, but I didn’t know about any Sting PS3 VNs. ^^

        • farios

They’re the one that is making the PS3 port of White Album series

          • IvanAzure

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thank you very much for the info. :)
P.S.: Why is it so hard to find any info about Sting being involved with the game? Only thing I ever find is mentions to Aquaplus, with a single random thread mentioning Sting…

      • Ni

Yeah, I know but the thing that piss me off is that could make a really good strategy game using the DAL cast, but they dont. They could do something like Knights in the Nightmare and would be amazing.

  • Himiko

Being a Visual Novel is not a negative at all. Not surprising either. I look forward to it.

    • Anonymous

I don’t like Visual Novels, But there are some games that look interesting to me despite being VNs, This is one of them

      • amagidyne

Not to protest your taste or anything, but why? This looks pretty standard.

        • Anonymous

Like i said, I don’t like VNs, I sorta hate them, But i like this one because the artist is Tsunako, And i’m a fan of the Neptunia series, I’m interested in Shinigami no Testament as well, But that one is an H-VN, I didn’t make my mind if i should bother with it or not

  • TiamatNM

If it’s just a VN or dating sim I don’t see why Sting is working on this. Can’t Compile Heart handle this on their own? I don’t have anything against VNs but I am a bit worried about Sting lately. If this was just a side thing it would be different but as far as I know they haven’t announced any other games they are working on.

  • echokanon

If I remember correctly, Sting did helped Leaf on developing ToHeart and White Album. So it might really be more visual novel oriented

  • Wow this looks amazing! i’m glad i preordered the limited edition early!!

  • I need to learn japanese… quickly. I’ll be entering classes on August, hope I learn fast -___-

    • MyBodyIsReady

I’ve got plans to do the same…Purely for video game reasons lol

      • Well, I’m also interested in the language itself, but yeah, mainly for videogames :P

  • Visa Vang

For some reason I dislike playing VNs on a console.

    • Testsubject909

Fair enough. Though what about VN presentations? After all, some games utilizes it in place of cutscenes.

      • Visa Vang

If the dialogues are short enough, I don’t really mind. Like say, Blazblue and Macross 30. VNs on PC is more at home for me.

  • ShadowDivz

After all, the series is about Shido sealing spirits within girls by making them fall in love with him

…..Isn’t that the plot of The World God Only Knows?

    • God Only Knows has the MC expeling spirits that have escaped from hell and are causing unneeded strife. Very similar though

    • Testsubject909

The World God Only Knows is a pretty damn fun series… Reminds me, I need to check it out again, it’s been a long time since I last read it.

  • Testsubject909

Insert Dead or Alive joke here. Insert Cid from Final Fantasy joke here.

Finger sucking. Check. Innocent looking girl taking in a phallic object in her mouth. Check. Naked scene from a girl whose emotional layout seems similar to the ever popular Rei Ayanami. Check. The word Onii-chan hinting at possible incest. Check.

… Yeah… Sounds pretty run of the mill.

Edit: I’d really really like to see a Dating Sim game with some micromanagement pop up again… I really miss Tokimeki Memorial for example.

    • I didn’t even notice the phallic object gag until you mention it…

Origami is one of the most hilarious Rei clone I’ve seen. Dat stalking XD

Also, I have my doubts tht Kotori might not even be Shidou real little sister (HINT: the eyes). Just my two cents on it but w/e.

I don’t know abt the VN, but the anime do touch a little bit on managing harem in EP4 instead of just making the girls irrelevant after the “conquest”.

  • Chronos

Since this was made by Compile Heart(and Sting), I have high hopes that NISA will localize this….. I haven’t watched the anime yet(since I’m waiting for it to finish) but since I’m a Visual Novel oriented gamer, I’m going to enjoy this
