Ikaruga Creator’s 3DS Shooter Is Coming Overseas

By Spencer . April 26, 2013 . 1:10am

G.rev, makers of Straina and Under Defeat, created a shooter for Nintendo 3DS with the creator of Ikaruga called Kokuga. If you haven’t seen the game before check out this tutorial video.

Yeah, it’s in Japanese but soon you’ll be able to play Kokuga in English. Kokuga was rated by Germany’s USK board and it says the text has been translated into English. We’re guessing Kokuga will be released as a digital import on the Nintendo eShop since G.rev is listed as the publisher.

  • Oh cool I thought this game would stay Japan only, I hope that if this game is very difficult it has an infinite continue mode or something. I really enjoy playing Under Defeat HD, but since I’m not super great at shmups I can’t beat the game.

    • Armane

You just gotta play Under Defeat more; 8 hours to unlock free play fyi.

      • Awesome I didn’t know about that. Thanks, I’ll actually be able to beat it now.

  • Haseyo

I admit I’ve never heard of this, but just from the video alone I know I’ll be purchasing this game day one.

  • Zonic505

Totally welcome more shmups on the go, especially if the guy who did Ikaruga is behind it.

  • Tails the Foxhound

I’m awful at games of this type but I love Ikaruga, so I’m happy we’ll be getting this.

That song in the last part of the video is neat, where can I listen to it fully?

  • AaqibRawat

    i want this

Even though I don’t currently have a 3DS I’m loving the fact GRev’s games are getting localised in the west. Hopefully Senko No Ronde 2 360 (wartech2) and GunHound EX PSP make there way to UK/PAL-land

BTW what’s happening with Mamarukun? is that supposed to be a US PS3 release only or is the 360 original getting localised too? (I don’t have a PS3 so I would totally swing for a dual region 360 release like Dodonpachi Resurrection PAL was.

    • All we know is that UFO Interactive is handling it, so it could be months or years before the next update. On the other hand their Facebook page promises a website overhaul shortly, so we might be getting that information sooner than later.

Anyway it’s interesting that this game has Ikaruga’s / ex treasure’s level designer working on it. IIRC Strania on XBLA is very much the same, the stage design has Treasure’s stamp all over it :D (shame not alot of Treasure fans know about Strania)

Whatever this ex Treasure stage designer is called I hope he works on more Grev shooters in the future as more Radient Silvergun-eske shmups are very much welcomed, especially nowadays where environmental hazards have fallen out of fashion in modern bullethell stage design where it’s all about the bullets and waves of enemy ships.

That’s two Japanese pubs/devs handling their own stuff abroad through the eShop. The beginnings of an exciting trend?

WHAAAAT? This too? This is like my most awaited game that I had zero expecations for coming. But not only that, Soul Hackers, Etrian Odyssey IV, Project X Zone, Guild01, Code of Princess all in Europe. I wouldn’t have believed a while back. Maybe in US, but not all even there. We get Bravery Default before US, too. Crazy shit! 3DS is all I need for gaming these days.
