King of Fighters X Fatal Fury Heats Up At SNK Playmore

By Spencer . April 28, 2013 . 10:30am

imageSNK Playmore spun their characters off into card fighting games way before it became trendy to do so. SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS mashed franchises together back in 2006 with a rather buggy Nintendo DS game.

The company’s latest card game is King of Fighters X Fatal Fury… which doesn’t make sense as a title since KOF has Fatal Fury characters in it already. It’s as nonsensical as Capcom X Street Fighter, but lets overlook that. King of Fighters X Fatal Fury has more than 100 characters from both games represented as character cards. You can form a deck with Iori, Mai, Kyo, and Terry. These cards can evolve when you combine same cards together or turn into legend tier cards when merged with a rare item.

King of Fighters X Fatal Fury is for iOS and Android care of Mobage, the company also handling Final Fantasy Tactics S and dozens of other social games.

I loved the Card Fighters games on NeoGeo Pocket, and I was having a blast with the DS version until the bug halted my progress. If this shares the same mechanics I’ll be very interested.

  • sibarraz

This game is similar to the original card fighters?

    Will had a western release?

  • Eliézer Dos Santos

Yeah, it’s not like the first Fatal Fury game was named “Fatal Fury – The King of Fighters” and started the tournament.

  • Sonny Oranga Taing

We’re not getting King of Fighters XIV anytime soon, are we?

    • Kaitsu

That’d be too soon. KoFXIII is still a thing for tourneys along with SF4 and all the other ones. Plus, it’s not like SNK makes a huge amount of money off games anyways to extend the game or create a sequel right away.

      • Sonny Oranga Taing

I still remember the time when we got yearly releases of KoF, among other games from SNK. I wouldn’t be so worried if SNK-Playmore released more than just mobile games.

      • AkuLord3

Its not too soon and there are other fighters that came out new so no but yeah not like they have the money for things anyway (last thing they said was wanting to make a new Neo Geo Coliseum)

    • Tee Niitris

The last I heard, SNKP is trying to reassemble a game development team after nearly everyone left because of the last company president. I think will see something from them soon enough.

      • Pope The Rev XXVIII

UGH SNK, Just get Ark System works to do it like everyone else does.

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

I think more important would be asking if SNK remembers Garou: Mark of the Wolves. The game was awesome, had new characters, Terry went “ARE YOU OKAY? BUSTA WOLF!”, the hero had an ambiguous ending and it was never given a sequel.

      • raymk

No the question is still we aren’t getting KOFXIV are we? I say this because it would be hard for snk in their current state to make a new Garou game. At least for a KOFXIV they can reuse sprites and assets to make a new game.

      • Raoni Marques

I would just love to see Rock Howard in a new Garou game or even on King of Fighters. IMO, he’s one of the best designs SNK ever created, and I think it’s a shame he only appeared in just a few games. With Terry using his Garou outfit in KOF XI and all the other characters from Garou in the game, they could have just added him to the team. I really liked Duck King, but Rock would be way better.

And I hope we hear some news about KOF XIV this year. I’m eager to see a new protagonist and hopefully Rock in the game!

  • Kevin Schwarz

Running out of creativity. I would be happier with a new IP, or something… or KoF XIV.

    • AkuLord3

well they don’t have much of a team or money for it so take what you get

  • Chow

I know this observation has been been mentioned in the article already but…
Isn’t Fatal Fury a subset of The King of Fighters?

*adjusts glasses and puts calculator back into shirt pocket*

    • nilcam

Nope. King of Fighters is an alternate timeline to Fatal Fury.

      • Juliano C

and a bad one, the original timeline was much better, with FF being some years after AOF and even having ties with LB, but SNK fucked everything for a new game (a good one btw), but they could´ve invested a little more time in the original timeline, would love to play a AOF4 with young Geese, Jeff Bogard (if he was alive at time, i dont remember if in AOF3 he was already dead) and a Garou 2 with a really old Yuri, or another AOF char

        • Tee Niitris

There was an account from someone who was [supposedly] a former SNK employee stating that (the original) SNK never wanted to do AoF3 and that 2 was supposed to be the definitive end (it would explain 3’s direction shift).

As for MotW 2, that was was supposed to have Andy return, Ryo appear as Mr.Karate II, and a student of Joe (this was not from the same source).

          • Juliano C

thanks for the info, looks like MotW2 would be awesome

          • dejavu2222

Cool history, makes sense about AOF yes and AOF 2 did conclude the story.

    • neo_firenze

Fun fact, the fighting tournament in the original Fatal Fury was the “King of Fighters” tournament. So by some reasoning, Fatal Fury was the original KOF game ;)

But yeah, whatever. I’m way past caring about the naming conventions or story continuity (which ones are “dream match” games, how the KOF/FF/AoF storylines intersect, etc.). And if they ever release another 2D fighter I REALLY don’t care what they call it, I’ll be thrilled regardless!

      • M’iau M’iaut

Again, same here. Just put everyone from every SNK fighter in the same game. It is not like any of us will require an explanation.

      • dejavu2222

Another fun fact, The King of The Fighters tournament was the first KOF initiated by Geese to fight the Sakazaki Clan in Art of Fighting 2, so KOF is even older than Fatal Fury, and Ryo and Terry are the first KOF champions!

        • neo_firenze

Ohhh yeah, forgot about that one :)

Could even fight young Geese as the secret boss if you don’t lose a round. Easier said than done though, AoF2 is brutal!!

  • Göran Isacson

On the one hand, there IS a precedent for these kind of card games with earlier SNK Card Battlers games… but on the other hand, this is the age of DLC and “buy extra special cards as DLC and unbalance the game”. Now, while I do believe that’s not what any serious game developer would do it always pays to be a little bit paranoid these days…

    • Solomon_Kano

With SNK’s money problems, I wouldn’t doubt that we’ll see something like that. There’s a reason why they’ve been most active in the Pachinko field in recent times…

      • Göran Isacson

Aah, didn’t know they had financial woes. One can only hope there won’t be TOO much nickle and diming in that case…

        • Solomon_Kano

They have money issues to the degree that they shut down their entire games division. Expect nickle and diming lol.

          • Göran Isacson

Welp. Now I just made a super-sad face, because that is just plain terrible :(

          • Solomon_Kano

But hey! There may be hope yet, as they’re apparently trying to get back into development. Earlier in the year either Fami or Dengeki talked to a bunch of devs and asked them their plans for the year, and SNK said we’d see a “great charge” for Metal Slug, so that may just be the start!

Unless they mean that literally, which would totes make sense with Pachinko.

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha yes, the great charge of “charge for every bullet fired from the tank, and by bullet we mean pachinko ball”.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Even though this is only cardgame, i will said that i am damn happy seeing that SNK is still alive here. Hoped that in coming future, they will be able to release many of their games again.^_^

    • Solomon_Kano

Same. They said that there’d be a “great charge” for Metal Slug this year, so hopefully they’re back in at least some capacity.

      • raymk

        Same but I want KOF02UM on psn already :(. I also want a KOF14.

        • Solomon_Kano

More KOF would certainly be nice. I need my Terry fix.

  • dejavu2222

Incorrect information. SNK first released SNK vs Capcom Match of the Millenium for the Neo Geo Pocket in the 1990’s, 2006 was a sequel to that card fighter game.

When will this be on the Western Apple store?? Is it available yet??

    • neo_firenze

Sorry, but have to correct you too :)

SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium was the 2D fighter on NGPC (and a damn fine game!), not the card battle game.

They DID also release a card fighter game on NGPC, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighter’s Clash (released in 1999 in two versions, the “SNK” and “Capcom” editions that came with different exclusive cards).

      • dejavu2222

Hey, thank you for the correction, yes the Card Fighter’s Clash was the one i was referring to. ^^”

      • M’iau M’iaut

I loved Girl’s Fighter. Infamous for the I’M NOT IORI gimmick of the final boss, when it was nothing but Iori in drag. The ‘Olympics’ angle of Match of the Millennium is something I’d like to see them go back to. That game had such an amazing amount of content for a tiny handheld fighter.

  • mobage’s dirty hands on my KoF and AoF? hell no!

  • dejavu2222

is this coming to the western iOS Apple store?!
