JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle Is Ultimately About Reading Your Opponent

By Cheng Kai . May 2, 2013 . 2:00pm

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 was not the only game CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama was open to speaking about when we caught up with him at a recent Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 promotional event in Tokyo.

Since the event was organized by Namco Bandai Games, the developer was also okay with talking about the next fighting-game-based-on-a-popular-manga-franchise they’re working on for the publisher as well – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a franchise that fighting game fans should be quite familiar with, even if they’ve never read the manga series or watched the anime, largely due to the Capcom 2D fighter first released in arcades over a decade ago. The game was re-released now re-mastered in HD for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Matsuyama allay any fears that All-Star Battle might turn out to be just like the Naruto Shippuden games, which are accessible to anime fans, but otherwise alienating fans of core fighting games such as Street Fighter IV or Persona 4 Arena.

"JoJo is ultimately about reading your opponent’s moves in a fight, more so than in Naruto," Matsuyama said when we asked him how All-Star Battle would be different from their Naruto fighting games. "And so the style and controls here are shaping up here more like a conventional fighting game," he continued.

"Having said that, our mindset here is that we’re not exactly tailor-making the title to suit the tastes of hardcore fighting game fans. Rather, we’re striving to make a game that JoJo fans will enjoy."

As a fan of the manga series himself, Matsuyama also mentioned that his favourite character throughout the entire franchise is Part IV’s Rohan Kishibe, but that his favourite storyline over all is that of Part V.

epic, just i can’t wait for this game!!!

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Interesting, Part V, huh? I’m hoping for Fuugo to make it in, Purple Haze… too bad we never got to see much of it…
Part IV was probably my favorite mostly because of the setting, main protagonist, overall cast and each enemy fought was pretty cool.
Although Part VI is very underrated, I hope to see more characters from there. (tbh I don’t remember that part well. The battles were insane lol)
There are so many characters to choose from… although I would be fine with a smaller cast. Maybe more good guys than bad guys (cause iirc, there’s a shit ton of enemies in this series. Not just the main villains).
I feel too hyped for this game :(

    • AkuLord3

I’ve been reading Part VI and i’m really liking it soo far (no surprise right) Its hard to say what my favorite part would be because each part has something cool that i really like.
Aside from the many characters they can chose from Part V like Risotto Nero and Bruno Buccellati, i do hope we get some characters from VI and VIII (come on Foo Fighter)

    • Abyan Haidar

yeah… even though part 4 is pretty underrated… I liked it really much… even one of my favorite character is in there, yeah Koichi Hirose…

    • jugun

Purple Haze should be the DLC that comes with the game

    • AndyLC

You ever play the PS2 JoJo game set in part 5?

  • Tre W

Hopefully, he’s not just yanking our chains…I want this to be something good.

  • Reki Honoo

And no info if we will get it in north america?

    • Auvers

I really can’t see it happening if not simply because of the hurdles they’d have to jump due to all the musical references in the names. Even the US manga release of Stardust Crusaders had several names changed. Araki in the past has been adamant about not changing the names too.

Joseph already wins the match before it starts? Welp, thats my main then

  • To those who want to see a broad example of what the JoJo series is about, here is an image that pretty much explains what each of the (currently eight) parts are about (in ascending order):

Don’t dive a damn if it’s an straightforward fighting game or a versus-action rpg, I just want a Jojo game.

    • Tre W

Well, as an addendum, you should want a GOOD Jojo game.

After Bamco’s craptacular PS2 title based off of Phantom Blood, all eyes are on CC2 to see if they and Bamco can make up for that.

  • jugun

None too surprising, considering that reading your opponents moves IS what the series is all about.
