More Details About New Etrian Odyssey’s Classic Mode

By Spencer . May 2, 2013 . 4:28pm

etrNew Etrian Odyssey: Millennium Girl is a reimagining of Etrian Odyssey that adds a story to the first person dungeon crawler. There are set characters to play as, but if you want a traditional Etrian Odyssey experience you can make your own party in Classic Mode.

Shigeo Komori, the director of New Etrian Odyssey, clarified Classic Mode is not a simple port and that the "new" gameplay features will be present in Classic Mode. New Etrian Odyssey: Millennium Girl has tweaks like Grimoires which let you learn skills from other jobs and even monster skills. There are over 200 Grimoires to collect. Players can also visit the Guild House to get quests too.

New Etrian Odyssey: Millennium Girl also lets people switch between old and new background music. And for people that haven’t played an Etrian Odyssey game before there are three difficulty settings. Picnic is designed for beginners that just want to see how the story unfolds. Standard is the usual difficulty and Expert is for Etrian Odyssey fans.

New Etrian Odyssey: Millennium Girl comes out on June 27 for Nintendo 3DS.

Cool beans. But I’m curious about the skill trees. Am I going to have to immunize the entire time during Classic mode or did they balanced it?

    • AkuLord3

I doubt the skills will work the same as before since its not a port of the first game so of course they balanced out moves and even then you could see how far u could get without using it for challenge~

So bloody excited for this, been loving every minute of Etrian Odyssey IV. Its impeccable grandiose of exploration doesnt even need a story.

    Come here Quick.

Atlus has done it again. Making an rpg flowing with content, while giving us awesome preorders (Ricebowl ftw). Being able to make an rpg that caters to ALL audiences by having different modes and difficulties all in the convenience of a portable console. Rich artwork blended with a good battle system now with huge skill trees. Im not even done with EO4 yet and im still excited for this game. Holly pokeballs im glad I bought a 3ds.

You said it all really. EO is a great series. I hope the new contract with nisa means that this will also come to EU or that nintendo will bring it themselves.

  • AkuLord3

More details as in one detail about it but yeah besides some stuff known before…Grimoires about getting enemy skills sounds interesting especially since there shouldn’t be any Subclassing in this game so that makes up for it

  • Kelohmello

Expert Mode, huh? Considering the standard difficulty for all EO games is generally pretty difficult… I wonder how hard that’ll be.

Also, I’m really glad they decided to let out more info on the game. For some reason, people think that a spinoff title should be the exact same as other games in the series and the amount of people that were trashing the preset characters was shocking to me. It’s good they shut those people up with a classic mode.

    • TiredOfMyOldUsername

I don’t know for the first 3 EO since i never played them, but EO 4 is really easy when you have a good combination of characters and skills

      • Pombar

EO4′s the easiest yet, but it’s the caution required in the first stratum and the incredible difficulty of the post-game content that most people mean when they talk about these games being hard. As in, you can’t just charge in spamming attack and get to the end like you can in a lot of JRPGs at the beginning. The post-game stuff is typically legitimately tough.

More like they added a story mode for people who always complain about the lack of character driven drama.

      • Kelohmello

That too. Personally as long as it’s got good challenge I don’t care either way! I like story too, so either-or is fine with me.

Just curious, who is the Artist behind Etrian Odyssey ? As a beginner, I took a hard liking to his character artwork.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yuji Himukai does the character designs.

        Thanks mate !

          No worries!

  • Barrylocke89

I hope Hard mode is actually harder than the standard EO difficulty instead of “Let’s make Normal Mode easier and call this the original style of difficulty” Mode.

    • http://twitter.com/ValeFalkren Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Etrian odyssey is rage inducing enough running into FoE’s and continuous fights in small caves.(that are a pain in the ass to get to in the first place XD

      • Ferofax

The original Etrian Oddyssey was pretty much made infamous by that difficulty, but players all the more loved it for it. Lots of priceless moments, people who call themselves RPG vets who go traipsing down the first dungeon and getting their behinds handed to them by a mob that sprung out of a trap event.

It’s first slap to the face, the wake up call that “Holy crap, this game isn’t joking”. And the paranoia begins, the grind for level, gear, and materials for better gear. Watching MP levels like a hawk. Never going out without an Ariadne’s Thread.

I still want to know if the Gunner class will be available in Classic.
