Conker’s Bad Fur Day Fundraiser Seeks Funds To Release Uncut Build

By Spencer . May 4, 2013 . 2:30pm

Conker’s Bad Fur Day was one of Rare’s unique projects. They turned a generic looking platformer into a furry version of South Park. While Nintendo didn’t publish the game (Rare themselves did), there were content cuts. And when Microsoft remade the game there were even more cuts.

Past to Present Online has a video showcasing a build from the European Computer Trade Show, which is more graphic than the final release.

The Conker’s Bad Fur Day build is one four Rare games bundled in the "Great Rare Fundraiser." Members from the Assembler Games forum are seeking to raise $2,500 to release a PAL beta of Perfect Dark, a NTSC beta of Perfect Dark, a debug of Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and the ECTS build of Conker shown above.

I am really not a fan of these games. They took Conker and made him into something terrible.

    • Linhua

… personally, I love the direction they’ve taken with him… back in his younger days… he was ever so fuzzy and full of life… had lots of childhood-like games to support that life style… and then… he got older. If anyone has ever seen the footage of the N64 game it was GOING to be BEFORE Bad Fur Day… they will understand or at least have an idea why they took this direction with him.

… so yeah, he got older… as we all do… and then there are things that happen out of terrible coincidence…

*SPOILER ALERT*… like taking away his girlfriend and then failing to save her for once in his life.*END SPOILER*

… Something like this can totally change a person… as it did him.

… again though this is just my opinion… but i’m kinda glad at least ONE RARE character grew up and saw life differently… and because of that… I have to say… that was one HELL of an experience that i’ll probably never get to have again.

      • Wait what

But… there was only one childhood-like Conker game and it was a random game on the Gameboy that almost nobody played, and he was immediately changed for his first big game. So, yeah, while I liked the direction of Conker’s Bad Fur Day, I think you’re being a little too poetic about it. :p

        • DesmaX

He’s not talking about Conker himself, he’s talking about Rare in general.

Pretty much all they did on the N64 was these “cheerful platformers” like Banjo or Donkey Kong 64, and, while great games, it was getting kinda stale. Which I guess it was motivation to turn Conker (64) into the game we all know

          • Wait what

He was replying to someone talking about Conker, and he was saying “his younger days”, “he was fuzzy”, “he had lots of childhood-like games”. Unless he was referring to Rare as a singular fuzzy male, I don’t see how he wasn’t talking about Conker. :/

          • DesmaX

Well, I should stop rushing replies, haha. But I though he would be talking something like his “Hidden Backstory” or something. Like if he tried to do the thing other characters did, but failed

          • Tooie and DK64 try to be bigger than their britches and were tedious and ultimately boring. Kazooie was remarkable, though. I’m happy Conker didn’t become a grand mess and turned into something unique and unseen before.

        • Linhua

          … wow really…?

          … I pulled something poetic…? XD … I suck at poetry.

… I remember Conker’s Pocket Tales for the GameBoy which is the one I had… and I thought there was another .-. Perhaps there was always one after all.

… either way… at least he was a fluffy kind squirrel without a deep voice in Diddy Kong Racing… who was my favorite character even then… lol.

I prefer the retail cutscene actually. But I wonder just how much else was cut.

What’s this fundraiser exactly, anyway? If they raise the money, what happens to those builds, do they get released on the net or what else?

    • CoinCollector

Yeah – once the goal is reached, the four builds will be released online. The money goes straight back into Ptop Online’s funds to obtain other betas.

The older Conker build is several months before the finish date, so it’ll be cool to see what else was changed!

  • TrevHead

I’m not interested in a debug version that I’ll have to use an emulator to play. Although I would love to play the N64 original fully ported to a modern console / PC

  • Spirit Macardi

I often feel like I’m the only person on earth who would have vastly preferred the original concept of Conker as a family-friendly platform game. I remember seeing the original screenshots in Nintendo Power and being excited as hell to play it. Then several years later the game came out and… It was nothing at all like what I had hoped for. I don’t even think the gameplay was all that solid, which stood out to me heavily since I normally loved Rare’s 64 bit offerings.

    • But… Rare put out tons of family-friendly platform games on the N64. If they had released Conker as yet another family-friendly platformer, it would’ve instantly blended in with all their other games and probably been quickly forgotten except by their hardcore fans. They wanted to do something different, and for better or worse, the result was a lot more memorable.

      • Spirit Macardi

I dunno, since the only other platformers they had put out were the two Banjo-Kazooie games and DK 64. Not like it was a whole lot to blend in with. Plus if they hadn’t decided to make it mature then they likely would have gotten Nintendo to give it more publicity.

Not to mention, their game Perfect Dark stood out despite the abundance of similar shooters for the console and its own heavy resemblance to Goldeneye.

  • I had no idea Rare published this themselves….or that they ever published game.

    • Tooru

I’m pretty sure that it was “published” by Rare in name only; there was an interview with Chris Seavor that confirmed as much. You’ll even notice that Nintendo’s logo appears before the N64 logo on the boot-up sequence, something that only happens in games they publish.

  • riceisnice

If people are willing, let it happen. I won’t be contributing though.

  • DesmaX

Probably it wouldn’t be fully playable, but if it would, I wonder if that EFCS bould would have that rumored ending where Conker kills himself

  • Surgeon of Death

    That squirrel is nuts!

  • JMaster3000

    looks so SICK!
    I LOVE IT!

  • Tien Ron

i loved conker’s bad fur day but i feel it lacks so many things because it’s so old, while it was good i think that game needs a make over the game controls were not that good too. but i loved the game regardless i just feel because it was on nintendo some of the essence is gone if it was on another platform.

  • Juan AndrĂ©s Valencia

Looks great but I have to say that the framerate is probably similar to the real game.

  • Lilith

Rare used to be one of the best game companies out there. Now not only their game sucks but they hate their fans.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Nintendo needs to buy Rare back. Mostly so the Great Mighty Poo can be in Smash Bros.

  • NightzeroAX

Here’s a better idea. Give Rare back to Nintendo cause MS ain’t doing anything with them.

    • There’s hardly anything to give back, most of the staff from this period is gone.

Nintendo can very well hire ex-staff and do a better job than current Rareware can accomplish.

Some ex staff want to make a spiritual successor to Banjo, Nintendo could fund it (it is on hold atm)

David Wise is a freelance. He can compose for future Donkey Kong games if he wanted to.

      • ShinStar

Strangely enough, I heard David Wise wanted to work on Donkey Kong [Country] Returns but Retro Studios didn’t contact him or something like that…

      • Warboss Aohd

more Conker an’ Kameo would be nice.

  • I want the original Conker and Berri back. :(

  • Farid Belkacemi

We need this game on the Wii (U) VC !

  • Kevin Lor

I love Conker’s Bad Fur Day! I enjoyed the story and for the multiplayer… holy crap me and my brothers spent days and nights on it!
