By Spencer . May 5, 2013 . 10:54pm

imagePlayStation 3 owners will get at least one Cave developed game. 5pb’s port of Ketsui is slated for release on July 25. This version is a faithful port of the arcade game with a bonus Extra mode. For shooting maniacs you can use vertical (tate) mode and set anti-aliasing options. Newcomers can tweak options like the number of continues to fly through the game with ease.

Ketsui will also be released as a limited edition with a super play video on Blu-ray. The perfect playthrough was recorded in 2003 from the arcade version.  A two disc sound track with tunes from Extra mode and the original Ketsui game upgraded into stereo.

Ketsui’s limited edition costs 10,290 yen ($104). A standard copy of the game is 7,140 yen ($72).

I’m glad that I got this game pre-ordered. This seems fine for a limited edition, but I was hoping for a SteelBook case as well. As far as I know, this shouldn’t have a region lock, correct? There are a few games on PS3 that are locked, but I hope this isn’t one of them.

    • neo_firenze

I’d be pretty surprised to see it region locked.

Usually the only time that would happen on a Japanese PS3 game is if the publisher was worried about a non-Japanese release of the game being cheaper and Japanese people importing it instead of buying their domestic version (for instance, P4: Arena). Not going to be the case for Ketsui though.

    • amagidyne

Are there a few? I’ve only heard of P4A.

      • FetusZero

P4A was the first.. and the last. After all the commotion, I doubt we will see another region locked game on PS3 anytime soon, but we never know.

However, if you still play on an old SD TV, some games don’t support 576i/p or 480i/p, so it may be “locked” depending on your SD TV’s resolution / region. Not a problem if you play in HD though.

        • ArmoredBoar

          It was the second, actually.
Also Metal Gear Rising’s Japanese PSN demo had region lock, but I don’t know about the full game itself.

And I am surprised at this talk of region lock, since Cave made all its 360 shmups region-free since we (the overseas folk) are the only ones who buy those games anyway.
EDIT: Wow, that sucks. Turns out only three games were. Then again they were my favorites so I didn’t know.

          • Julien_N

Well, aside from Mushihimesama Futari, Galuda 2′s Standard Edition and the MMP/PS compliation, none of the CAVE releases on the 360 have been region-free. =O

I am curious about the other region-locked PS3 game you are talking about by the way. Which was it?

          • ArmoredBoar

Platinum ver. of EG2BL was region-free too.

And I could’ve sworn Ketsui Extra was region-free. Damn.

          • Julien_N

Platinum? You mean the “limited” edition?
            *goes to check on Wikipedia*

So there are three versions of the game now? Whoa, I am so confused right now…what’s with those gazillion different versions with bizarre contents disrepancies? O_o
The difference between a regular and “limited” edition is already too much for me to handle, though. XD

            That’s indeed a shame for Ketsui’s 360 version’s region-lock, as it is a excellent game. =/

          • Mantiskilla

Yeah for EG2 the plat, and standard editions were region free while the Limited Edition (different cover art, cd, faceplate combo) was region locked.

          • FetusZero

Nope, sadly.. that’s why I’m excited for this Ketsui release :]

All of this region locking makes me sad, but I console myself with Bullet Soul, since it’s my favorite X360 shmup so far and it was region free :]

          • FetusZero

We could consider DoDonPachi Resurrection semi region-free.. though it’s more thanks to Rising Star. The PAL version is playable on both North American and European consoles.

          • FetusZero

Ah, didn’t know the demo was region locked. I don’t think the full game is, otherwise I’m sure we would of heard about it by now lol.

Its about time to as well Cave so Desperately seeking overseas expansion may have to realise that the only way it can be done is by turning there attentions to the PS3 encouraging others like Moss who just recently region locked Caladrius to do the same

    • Mantiskilla

Yeah that’s too bad. I would have been confident that another Moss game would come to the west as they usually do; however, with the new xbox coming out I doubt now that they will find a taker to bring it over.

      • TrevHead

I’m kinda hoping that shmup devs will continue pumping them out on 360 for years to come kinda like the DC is atm.

Given region locking is the devs choice with no extra charges I would hope they would see sense in making them RF

    • neo_firenze

Cave isn’t publishing anything on PS3. It’s all 5pb, who acquired a license to Ketsui from Cave (5pb also released the 360 versions of Ketsui and Dodonpachi Daioujou Black Label).

Don’t expect to see Cave switching to PS3 now and porting games they have already published on 360 in Japan, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment if you do. And Cave’s attitude toward the non-Japanese market has always been lackadaisical at best, I certainly wouldn’t ever say they are “desperately seeking overseas expansion”.

  • disqus_VYqqwQ8BRH

Did 5pb get the license for Phantom breaker inferno maybe they could release that as a PS3 title
