Xseed Acquires Atlus Online, Becomes Marvelous USA

By Spencer . May 6, 2013 . 3:56pm

xseedXseed grew today starting with the acquisition of Atlus Online from Index Digital Media. Atlus Online handles MMORPGs like BattleSpace, Knights of the Sky, Pandora Saga, and Shin Megami Tensei Imagine.

This new company has a rather familiar name, Marvelous USA, and will be run by Shinichi Suzuki, who is the current President and CEO of Xseed and former President of Atlus USA. Ken Berry will continue to direct publishing and localization efforts for console and handheld games. Tatsuya Nishioka from Marvelous AQL will handle digital titles from Marvelous Online.

“Marvelous USA unifies our US operations under the global Marvelous brand while giving our customers topnotch products and support for both traditional and online social and mobile games,” said Shinichi Suzuki, President and CEO of Marvelous USA. “Our Xseed Games console and PC brand will continue to offer the quality games and service for which it is known, and Marvelous Online gives us expanded reach into mobile and online social gaming markets.”

  • So, as one that simply loves XSeed for localization, should I be happy or sad about this?

    • wyrdwad

It’s really no change for you guys. We’re still going to be releasing games under the name XSEED, just as we always have.

If this announcement has any repercussions to XSEED stuff, it’ll be that (A) we might get more overseas support than ever before, and (B) we might get more Marvelous titles. Both of which are good things. ;)

      • Taylor Greene

I’m pretty excited by this announcement. A and B sound like wonderful things!

      • gamefreak86

So senran kagura in the works? *drool*

      • Senran Kagura confirmed!? Thank you! =P

      • Jack Frazee

Luminous Arc 3? :< Old, I know, but I still desperately want to finish that series.

        • gamefreak86

          Oh and can’t forget GKH.

      • That sounds great. Either way, congratulations to the hard-working folk at XSEED.

    • landlock

Will I guess Atlus are trying to get out of the MMO market for whatever reason. Marvelous decided to snap it up. Don’t think it makes a difference to XSeed at all.

      • Its index who owns that. Atlus is owned by index which has been posting consecutive losses for years insofar

    • Spirate

Nothing’s happening outside of a little growth, that’s all.

  • Leon_Tekashi

So…Does this mean we’ll be able to get games like Fate/Extra CCC a little bit easier?

    • Wait what

I’d like that to be true, but I doubt it. All that’s happening here is Marvelous/XSEED acquired Atlus Online. Nothing is changing to either XSEED or Atlus normal localization efforts from what I can tell. Atlus is just getting out of the MMO business and Marvelous/XSEED are jumping into it.

Our best hopes for Fate/Extra CCC are still the gloriousness that is Aksys.

  • Spirate

Just for clarification, the XSEED brand name still exists; the PR release is worded very weird.

    • Yeah, Xseed and Marvelous Online are brands under Marvelous USA.

    • Just Tim

XSEED is the localization arm of Marvelous AQL, while the newly-revived Marvelous USA is the MMO arm, correct?

I still remember XSEED, localizing Hajime no Ippo Wii game for the US market, while then-AQ Interactive published the game in Japan.

  • Lucian Kara

I’m glad to see XSEED picking up steam since they’re one of only a handful of Pubs that will pick up an obscure JRPG and give it a decent localization. My big concern is that this is following after Atlus’ fiscal loss and I worry that they might be in some trouble themselves.

    • Atlus would most likely be bought, the rest of index would just capitulate to share holders

      • Lucian Kara

True enough, That might be the reason why we haven’t heard word one about Persona 5 or really any non-handheld title in a fair bit.

  • Speedo Redempteur

    OK ok why not ?
Looking forward to see what this new entity will provide and i hope that’s new things.

  • SirRichard

Can only be good news, I certainly wasn’t expecting them to expand at all for a while. Here’s hoping they keep on doing what they do.

  • Barrylocke89

As a fairly recent fan of Xseed, I’ll be interested in seeing where this all goes.

  • kroufonz

I am interested in more detail, does this make them bigger, and could take more localization etc?

  • d19xx

I like XSeed. It’s easier to type than Marvelous.

It sounds like a good thing though. I hope the company continues to grow.

  • ShimaPantsu

    Marvelous USA, pls

  • Justin Perry

More online social gam—BEGONE FROM MY REALM last we need is more facebook games

    • M’iau M’iaut

I don’t think any of Atlus’ current online games are FB titles.

    • Wait what

You realize MMOs are online social games too, right?

  • Pichi

Good news for more localizations. Will Natsume keep Harvest Moon or no?

  • ShadowDivz

When i see Senran Kagura localization in the works WITH NO CENSORSHIP then i jump for joy

    • alixraen

There’s plenty of other great beat-em ups, and additionally, a lot of other great fanservice games, so don’t get so hung up on this one :)

      • ShadowDivz

Beat em ups maybe, but besides Ar tonelico Qoga i don’t know of other fanservice games.

  • Might not be a big deal but Taka Kenichro just tweeted this article. https://twitter.com/kenichiro_taka/status/331583689957965824

    • Not a super big deal. Lots of publishers read Siliconera. I wouldn’t read into it too much.

  • Aunna Terrell

I haven’t been following the Atlus Online MMO news for a while now but does this mean that Marvelous USA will also be releasing Master of Epic and Tower of Druaga that Atlus USA+Rosso Index announced in 2010? I haven’t heard anything about those two since the initial announcement. (lol, whatever happened to them? Weren’t they suppose to be released in 2011?)

  • Go2hell66

Does this mean we can have more games?

  • Nice to see that Index’s and Marvelous’ world domination plans are going smoothly.

  • TrevHead

SMT Imagine that’s the one CAVE made isn’t it?

    • LynxAmali

      I think so, yeah.

  • NimbusStev

Well this makes sense. XSeed, Marvelous, and Atlus are all pretty similar companies that share a very small market. Seems like a good idea for them to work together.

  • Joseph Santee

…S-so the online branch of one of my favorite developers… was just bought out by my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE publisher… :D My happiness just skyrocketed.

  • Learii

xseed be bring Marvelous AQL games coming to the west right? =D

    • Solomon_Kano

Nothing’s changed but their name. Xseed was already under MAQL, so this doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be publishing more of their stuff. Aksys handled Fate/Extra, Natsume handled Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, Xseed’s handling RF4. All of these games have been released in the time MAQL and Xseed have been together.

Perhaps this will allow Xseed to pick up more MAQL stuff, but they’ve already been able to get their games.

  • Nice.I sense a trails game incoming.Ha ha ha ha ah aha …..it is coming right?

  • Sonny Oranga Taing

Is Marvelous USA still going to based in Irvine, or are they moving to Torrance to join up with XSEED?

  • Tom

Good names coming together? Marvelous AQ -> AQ Interactive -> Cavia… :)

  • tukang nonton

Maybe someday, there will be Senran Kagura Online? :3

  • CirnoLakes

Well, I like XSEED. I’m a fan of their work. The seem to have a passion for the sort of games I am likely to care about. And their work is superb.

I also really like Atlus. Atlus and Nippon Ichi are some of the most respectable in the Japanese industry right now. So seeing this sort of thing happen looks like two things I like being brought together. Bridges between two good things, XSEED and Atlus.

I want to hope this is XSEED becoming bigger and more powerful. Able to do more and get more great games released in customer friendly fashions. So let’s hope that this and acttil are both fantastic omens. That’s what they look like to me. Only time will tell. But there’s nothing about this that sound anything other than good. It isn’t as if this is one of those mergers where tons of talented people get laid off. This looks like a growth for this sector of the industry all the way.

  • Heh, I got their e-mail a few hours ago regarding the change of company and brand. Anyways, I find the change OK in my book. I like all of them! And all of them working in the same name, as some poster before me have said, is great!

May they keep up the good work! Maybe this is also a step forward fro Senran Kagura’s campaign for World Domination!

  • Aristides

This looks good :P I’m glad they’re expanding but I truly do hope this affects localisations positively rather than negatively.

  • Warboss Aohd

not sure wot dis meanz, though it soundz good.
