Sonic The Hedgehog Getting 3D Classics Style Remake Next Week

By Spencer . May 7, 2013 . 10:09pm

sonic3d5 The original Sonic the Hedgehog is spin dashing onto Nintendo 3DS with stereoscopic 3D effects. Sega is giving the Genesis classic the same treatment as 3D Super Hang-On and 3D Space Harrier.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog is a port with a few modern tweaks. You can spin dash just like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sega added save states. Want to play the original game? There’s an option to turn spin dashes off and remap the buttons. Sonic maniacs might appreciate being able to switch between the Japanese release and International version to see minor differences when it comes to bonuses. You can even choose the sound emulation based on the Sega Genesis or the Sega Genesis model 2.

One other neat feature is you can switch between normal mode and a faux CRT classic mode. 3D graphics can be set to depth or zoom.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog comes out in Japan as an eShop download on May 15 for 600 yen ($6).

Very nice to hear. It’s be much easier to play on my 3DS than on my computer. Iirc, for some reason, the playscreen that popped up last time I tried playing was super tiny and it was an incredible hassle trying to figure out how to expand it.
Getting old games to work properly on new computers is right at the limit of my tech knowledge (read: comprehension of terms found using Google :P ).

  • Wait what

I guess there was no mention of a US release, huh?

    • Yeah. I don’t think Sega’s interested in bringing any of their 3D Classics titles to the US.

      • neo_firenze

It’s ridiculous, how hard could it be to release these games with almost zero localization work needed?

And they really should do more… Outrun, Afterburner, Power Drift. So many great Sega arcade games that would just be perfect for this 3D style.

      • Chaheezor

We’ll get it soon, it’s Sonic. SEGA wouldn’t not release a Sonic game in the west.

  • Scipio

Seems like a better port than the GBA version.

    • AnimeRemix

Almost anything is better than the GBA port. That was just down right lazy and atrocious.

    • Zonic505

That was the first thing that came to mind when I heard “spindash in Sonic 1”. Let us hope this is NOTHING like the GBA version.

  • LexKitteh

Wow! I was hoping they would do this, but never thought they actually would! Really appreciate all the extra settings too! :D There weren’t nearly enough 3D Classics made in my opinion.

    • dragoon_slayer12

I couldn’t agree more. I would’ve loved to see mega man, kickle cubicle, guardian legends, and more turned into 3d classics. Hopefully down the road they do a Mario bros 3,or dare I say, link to the past 3d classic

The only classic I didn’t purchase was kid icarus. I even bought (regrettably) urban champion

      • Folk Hellfang

Bro, sis, insert non-gender specific name here, you gotta get Kid Ic. Easily the best in the 3D classics first wave. I’m saying first wave because I have faith that there will be a second wave.
The Kid Icarus is significantly enhanced over the classic NES version, and as a hard core fan of the original game I can’t recommend the 3D version enough. Only down side is no new game plus mode.

Send the message, we want more 3D Classics!

        • dragoon_slayer12

          Bro here. ^_^

I didn’t care for uprising so I never had the “rush” to get part 1.i still have a library to go through, so I’ll take your recommendation into consideration down the road

          • Folk Hellfang

Well Kid Ic 1 is very different than uprising, and may be one of the harder NES games. I would say if you liked Metroid 1 you would like KI as they used the same engine and as I understand it were developed by the same team.

          • dragoon_slayer12

I love metroid, but I can’t do 1,the graphics are too archaic. That’s why I was pissed NES 1 was given rather than Zero Mission to the ambassador’s

  • Just give us a sonic title with the rayman legends art style

  • gamerdude

I loved sonic unleashed dlc tracks (daytime of course they were brutal in diffyculty and were built upon the same feeling of continuous motion as the first sonic games. What I would like is more of that with multiple routes for replay value.

Sonic generations was good too but the overall pace of the game made you play in same areas of the game too much.

    • Wait what

Sonic Colors, my friend. It’s a bit easier than Unleashed DLC, but it’s all the good stuff with none of the Werehog. It has the multiple routes thing too, and even more upon replays as unlocking powers later in the game give you new options for replaying the earlier ones to find even more routes.

      • gamerdude

Now that sounds like my kind of a game. Thanks for the recommendation!

      • ddh819

are you talking wii or ds version?

        • Hec4Mets

Wii Version is obiviously better ;)

        • Wait what

Wii version. I heard the DS version is fun for those who liked Sonic Rush, though.

    • dragoon_slayer12

My only problem was that I beat it in 3 hours in one sitting. Other than that, generations is what they should look to as inspiration from here on out (both console and handheld versions)

      • Wait what

Generations (console version, at least) actually has hours upon hours of content, they just aren’t in the main levels. The challenges that litter the white void stage select thing is where the real meat of Generations is, and indeed many of them are very good. There are some simple or lazy ones, but some of them become entirely new levels with new layouts while others put so many challenges into the mix it feels like a new level. Granted, I’d happily trade all of the challenges for another full 3 levels, but for what we got the challenges gave me something to keep going back to.

  • dragoon_slayer12

I really hope this swings our way. What I would love from them if they keep doing 3d classics are Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage 2, and my #1 pick, Sonic 3 and Knuckles

  • Does this mean we can finally get Genesis and/or SNES games on the 3DS Virtual Console now?

  • XypherCode

Seems great. Sure hope it gets to US eShops soon. :)

  • and it’s not based on the new “remake” coming to the iOS and Android? SEGA, do you not like giving players something NICE? 3D is nice, but using the full resolution of the console (or at least the full screen) would have been nice. Just like in that other version of Sonic 1 you guys are releasing soon.

*sigh* and here I was, being happy that I’m going to play the Taxman & Stealth remake.

  • gamefreak86

Very cool and reasonable price. Still I love the original on genesis 1 the most.

  • Zonic505

If this does well, can we see this done for Sonic 2? Or even better, Sonic 3 (& Knuckles)? Imagine how the bonus stages would look like.

I also really like all the small bonuses thrown in. Screen type, US & JPN version, and even the sound based on which Genesis model you had. Such great touches.

  • Chow

Cool. Coolcoolcool. Just hope it’s not like the GBA version ._.

“There‚Äôs an option to turn spin dashes off and remap the buttons.”
“There’s an option [to] remap the buttons.”
    “…option [to] remap the buttons.”
    remap the buttons.

    Wut. ;)

    • Kris

Maybe they added an automatic spin dash button like in Generations or something?

  • Awesome.

  • NightzeroAX

GBA Port is bad and right after that would be PS3 port. Was there really a need to put two borders on the side?

  • Weeb

I was hoping for Outrun 3D or After Burner 3D

  • Immortal1

Day one purchase when it comes to the U.S.

  • atc483

Ha, that’s the first time I’ve seen a CRT mode for a game, certainly rounds out the nostalgia for me

  • Otis ChaoticNeutral Small

Hope they get around to Sonic 2

  • i would piss my pants if they do it with sonic 2 also in the future.
sonic 1 is a good game, but sonic 2 is awesome
