Sure, the PlayStation 4 is coming, but there are plenty of awesome games for PlayStation 3. Sony made new bundles for North America and Japan. What’s interesting is how different the packages are.

The Legacy Bundle is geared towards gamers with copies of Gran Turismo 5 XL, inFamous 2, a 30 day voucher for PlayStation Plus, and a console with a 500 GB hard drive for $299. Meanwhile, Japan is getting a PlayStation 3 HDD Recorder Pack which includes the Tivo-like Torne software and a 250 GB console for 27,980 yen ($280). The HDD recorder pack is scheduled to come out on July 11.

Even though it the Torne pack has a smaller hard drive, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has been marketing the PS3 as a digital video recorder in Japan while PS3 is pushed as a pure gaming machine here.

      No, not really, not exactly
These two bundles are two different product, aiming at 2 different target audience entirely for different purposes, so the application of said trope isn’t exactly valid
In Japan, the PS3 is already established itself firmly as the sole machine for modern home console gaming, so they create a bundle that is designed to appeal to other non-gaming market.
Whereas the West, there is still the competition between Microsoft and Sony going on, so they need to try dominate the gamer market first with exclusive titles bundle.
A straight example of the trope would be if the Japan bundle is to include titles like *insert really Japanese titles here*

  • Is the US bundle also scheduled for the July 11 release? Or TBA? I really want this last model of the PS3, and since they’re only releasing it in bundles, this might be my last chance/best price for it.

Wait for next year and bundles. I want to get a backup, in case my fat dies on me. I don’t want to be without a PS3.
