Fairy Fencer F Adds Air Combos To Neptunia’s Battle System

By Spencer . May 16, 2013 . 11:10pm

Fairy Fencer F is being developed by the Neptunia team and it uses the Neptunia battle system. Compile Heart added new features like air combos and avalanche attacks. How do you do these? Compile Heart didn’t say, other than the controls won’t be difficult. Players can also use Weapon Points to customize their Furies, which are a key part of the story.

A long time ago there was a conflict between a goddess and an evil god. The two deities didn’t fight directly, but created a large number of special weapons for others to use. Eventually, these powers sealed each other and the power vanished from the world. Fast forward to modern times where these leftover weapons are called "Furies" and warriors that wield them are "Fencers." Fury weapons are said to be incredibly powerful, so Fencers constantly scramble to acquire them. By a strange coincidence, two fencers, Fang and Tiara, get caught up in the struggle between the goddess and evil god.

Fang is the protagonist. He tends to say stupid things, but he’s an honest guy who doesn’t hide anything. Usually, he’s lazy and interested in doing things for pleasure, but one he’s fired up nothing can stop him.

Tiara is the heroine and also a fencer. She comes from a well off family and is a little too serious at times. She is collecting Furies to revive the goddess. Watch out because if you cross Tiara she’s scary when she gets angry.

Alyn is the human form of the spirit dwelling inside Fang’s Fury. She lost her memory and looks down at Fang’s haughty attitude.

I’m increasingly wondering why they even bothered to develop a whole new brand and stuff to go with this game. With every bit of info I hear it sound more and more like just another Compile Heart title If you like that, fine, but why did they start off with all this posturing implying that they were going to do something different?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Yup, there’s nothing that even hints at a deeper character involvement that was at least tried in the Agarest series. You can’t get much more every other RPG/anime trope than these three leads. And you wouldn’t even suspect Amano had a thing to do with their original design save maybe a frill or two on the girls.

      • Ladius

To be fair, Amano rarely had a chance to work as lead character designer or to see his artworks featured in-game since the days of Kartia and El Dorado Gate.

He mostly does logos, concept arts or his own interpretations of characters designed by other artists, and this collaboration with Compile Heart is perfectly in line with his current modus operandi.

        • M’iau M’iaut

True dat — Kartia’s cover art was kind of set aside from the game. It’s just you advertise his involvement and only end up with a palette swap for Noire and one who seems to have parts of every other Nep Nep girl somewhere in her face and outfit?

          • Ladius

So far his only known contribution is the artwork that was included in one of the previous screenshot batches, even if I have seen some speculation about his role as a monster designer (I haven’t found a source to back up that assumption, though). The characters should be 100% Tsunako.

          • zazza345

Amano is credited for concept art as evidenced here: http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/639/639394/

          • Rentekabond

She doesn’t even look like a mish-mash of the Nep sisters, she’s literally exactly the same as NepGear –

They had the audacity to reskin Noire and Nepgear and try to pass them off as new characters. It’s pretty funny, actually.

    • michel

      Totally agree.
I thought that this new company was to be a dream team put together to build a totally groundbreaking game…

    • Nightmesh

That’s what I thought when I saw the teaser. I was iffy about it before hand since it was compile but I saw that trailer and unfortunately gave myself some hype. It died. It died and no one was there to comfort it.

    • WhyWai

well, at least seem like they going to make a more serious jrpg this time instead of parody like Neptunia.. that’s a change.

I think most people including me were just disappointed by the hype they brought up when announcing the game instead of by the game itself..

    • TiamatNM

      I’m not surprised though :P

  • Nightmesh

………Okay, so am I the only one that thinks that Fang looks a lot like another main hero from a recently remade Tales of game? The outfit and hair are just way WAY to similar.

  • Randy Marsh

One word comes to mind after reading the story and character synopsis, Generic.

    • Testsubject909

      Eh. Why not.

Generic sounds like it’s in the minority when it comes to JRPGs.

Edit: Ya heard me right. From where I stand and from all the JRPGs I’ve played. I look at “Generic JRPGs” as an odd fresh of breath air… Because they certainly feel like a minority.

      • Randy Marsh

No, no, no, you are entitled to your opinion and I agree with you wholeheartedly with what you just said.

Anyways I never said generic was a bad thing, I like generic.

        • Testsubject909

I’m good so long as it doesn’t get me screaming at how stupid things are.

Like Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward’s character’s complete inability to process proper logical ideas (edit: and then proceed to acting all high and mighty as if what they had said was the smartest thing ever… Much like a stereotypical “ohmagad didjahear like totally” acting all high and mighty and looking at you as if you were an idiot when said stereotypical character was being the biggest dunce you could ever imagine… I got issues with those characters) and that’s a character failing not a story failing… Or Star Ocean 4’s main character and that needless moment of world ending stupidity… I wish I wasn’t saying that literally…

Edit 2: Oh, did I hurt the feelings of a fan of Zero Escape? Look, not blasting the story… Blasting the stupid characters… And I already put up extensively long and lengthy walls of text detailing in many ways just how infuriatingly stupid and unable to even fathom the logical course of action that anyone with a properly working mind in their situation could come up with. The wall of text is not in this article though, be thankful.. Because it’s easily twice or thrice the length of this comment.

Or if you’re downvoting me because of Star Ocean 4…

You’re defending him considering what he did in AE? You’re defending THAT literal world destroying stupidity? I stress the world Literal. World. Destroying. Stupidity. Stupidity that destroyed a world.

          • Randy Marsh

It appears our little downvoter has logged in, it’s honestly laughable that someone actually has time to go on this site and downvote almost every single comment on the page.

Anyways, yep I can agree that Edge Maverick was pretty bad character. Primary reason I dislike SO4, yeah downvote me for that.

      • Crazy_O

LoL I never thought about it this way, but you are right. :)

  • DyLaN

Just at 11 comments and it turn into a whining thread *sigh*

Anyway, FFF seems to looks (somewht) more serious than Neptunia series and I’m fine with this.

    • Randy Marsh

Actually it is 10 comments of whining, get it right good sir.

      • Landale

Prior to him saying that it was 11. Get it right before you tell someone to get it right.

That aside. I suppose this explains why Alyn wasn’t present for the combat screenshots last time, so now the question is what kind of characters are Tiara and the unidentified girl’s weapons?

        • Randy Marsh

Eh read wrong, meh wanted some vote downs anyways, I hardly get them.

          • If someone downvotes you, It only means they care enough about you to try and make you feel bad.

  • Stop comparing this to other games ffs, most of you whining won’t even buy this when it releases

    • Landale

Comparisons are fine and are not necessarily whining, not to say that some people’s comparisons aren’t whining or pointless. Most of the comparisons have been about character designs, so far it’s mostly been pointing out similarities between the artist’s other characters which is pretty fair. The comparison down below is kinda odd and I fail to see how it’s really fitting.

    • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Agree FF should not be compared with this piece of turd.

That being said i think this game will be more serious than what they release however that is not exacly a reasuring.

Then we have a game that apparently will have only one male and those kind of games turns to be pretty lame story wise as is just focused of the creepy guy and the slutty females.

      • Landale

No one has seriously been comparing this to FF, if at all. I assume you thought that’s what the “ffs” was? Tip; That’s shorthand for “For fuck’s sake.”

We know of 4 characters so far, one we don’t know anything about beyond her looks and weapon. We know that at least one character has a weapon similar to Fang’s, which means her weapon is also very likely another character.

We do not, however, know that there’s only one male and there’s not really anything to indicate that. Even in Compile Heart’s games where the cast is predominantly women, men are not that scarce. And creepy guy and slutty females? What gives you the impression that they’d go that route at all?

        • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

For one the guy has been sent to the sidelines wich means that he will be probably pretty shallow and not too much interesting and then we have a character confirmed to be masochist wich is material for lots of ecchi stuff so im not specting the cast to be that out of the anime conventions that you see in harem animes.

I might be jumping the gun but so far thats the only feel i can get from this game.

          • Testsubject909

If you’d rather have virginal girls and no slutty female characters, may I recommend Virgin Fleet for you to bash your head into the wall and pray to never hear the words “Virgin Energy”?

Edit: Don’t take me too seriously here though. I’m just poking a bit. You’re already aware you’re jumping the gun.

Edit 2: Actually this was more of me making fun of Virgin Fleet… Boy that anime is dumb.

          • oh god NO.

          • Testsubject909

It’s just depressing to know the man behind Sakura War is behind Virgin Fleet.

      • Testsubject909

Edit: Just so you know… Mainly speechless because… Someone was comparing this to Final Fantasy?

        And you’re… huh…

        …. Not sure if fanboyism.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Plenty of thoughts on both sides have been expressed without degrading. That isn’t a road we need to travel here.

  • TiredOfMyOldUsername

Even though i wasn’t expecting much, i still had some hope they would do something different.
Still it’s a bit to earlier to be dissapointed for now all we know is the art and battle are similar to Neptunia, but that doesn’t mean everything else will be similar too.

    • Landale

Different from what? Honestly, what little has been said of the plot so far has a very Agarest feel to it, and the art and base for the battle system were known pretty much from the start that it’d be similar to Neptunia.
Though, given the minimal descriptions of some of the combat system’s changes I feel like it’ll end up feeling more like something of a mix between Mugen Souls and Record of Agarest War 2 than anything immediately Neptunia; A button for standard and knockback type attacks, a button for launching and air combos, and a button for forcibly dropping enemies and utilizing those forced movements to do additional damage to other enemies.

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

Different then what they usually do.

I was hoping for them to go in a different direction since they want through the trouble of making a new branch and say they want to be more japanese.

But until now we saw nothing new, all we see is things they would have made even without the new branch.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Okay, I kind of understand that some people hated some of Compile Heart’s titles, but even so, don’t you think it’s too early to preemptively jump the gun and go into conclusions? I’d rather wait to hear more instead of this unnecessary whining.

    • Testsubject909

Just wait until our local lurker downvoter comes by to downvote everyone including those who make neutral comments and, hell, even those who supports his/her point of view because of just how blindly they’ll downvote anyone who posts in these articles.

Unless they went into Summer Hibernation. (or something.)

      • Sentsuizan_93

Wait… Who is the downvoter that downvotes everyone in random posts? I’ve been wondering this since I first joined this site…

        • Testsubject909

          I dno… That’s why I said he or she’s a lurker… And why I don’t know the gender.

I just know whoever it is, he or she is our resident downvoter.

I’m guessing… They might mutate or maybe pass the torch in some odd unknown ritual that may never appear in a documentary on the discovery channel.

Edit: Though as you can see. I draw as much entertainment as I can from their anonymous blind to the point of amusingly ludicrous hater nature.

  • Flandre Scarlet

I’m not sure they could have made Fang any more generic if they had tried.

    • Landale

That word has been so horribly abused, it’s actually pretty funny. He looks normal. Honestly unless they went with a completely erratic design that made absolutely no sense at all, the traits would be easily identifiable, or as you put it generic. All you’re saying when you say that is that he’s actually describable or completely misusing the word without realizing it.

      • Flandre Scarlet

Let me put it in a way you can understand, then: He looks boring, uninspired, and completely uninteresting. We can play mix-and-match the JRPG protag and get him, again. Someone pointed out he looks eerily similar in design to a recent Tales protagonist, too.

He’s the protagonist of an RPG, which is an experience that takes many hours to get through. The main character shouldn’t be ‘normal’, unless the story calls for it. Why would I want to play as Mr. Completely Boring Looking?

        • Testsubject909

Ah. So you have a bone to pick with FFX and FFXII.

And if you tell me you don’t… Then you just contradicted yourself.

Edit: Then again, those two aren’t so much “normal” as they are “what the hell are you doing in this game ya useless twat?” kind of characters…

And before anyone opens that can of worm and comes to defend Tidus and all that. I’ve had the argument many time. I understand where people are coming from, but in return I ask you to understand where I’m coming from…. Because more often then not I notice I’m understanding the side of those who do enjoy Tidus and believe he’s important to the story… Only to find that my side is often neglected because they just don’t want to think of the other point of view.

          • Flandre Scarlet

I have several bones to pick with X and XII, and they were mostly related to Tidus and Vaan, yes. Completely separate reasons, of course. XII had a great cast of characters and Vaan would have been fine outside the MC role, though to that game’s credit it does give a lot of focus to the rest of the party.

Tidus is Tidus. He was a really bad character and that went beyond just being incredibly boring looking…but his story also did at least try to explain it. Still, wasn’t the best.

          • Testsubject909

My main problem with XII’s cast of characters was they pulled a bait and switch.

“Hey, player, you see this character who has an established relationship with another character who’s going to be important. See how we’re setting his backstory and showing that he’ll have a potential reason to actually be in the whole story? Yeah… Yeah we didn’t feel like having another important character so we killed him. Hope you enjoy your pointless street urchin character that’s totally switchable with anyone else in your party and can be forgotten in the backburner! Ciao!”

Edit: Also… To the guy who went “FF shouldn’t be compared to this turd” well… Look what I just did.

I compared FF to this game.

And FF is not looking too good.

        • Landale

Looking at the character down there the design similarities are short brown hair and a jacket. And the jackets aren’t even alike. Oh, and the use of some common colors, but not in the same places.
I’d say the story calls for it. Impractically fancy clothes don’t exactly scream sensible for someone who’s on the hunt for ancient superweapons.

      • Testsubject909

Many words have been horribly abused. Epicly abused I might add. To a point where some people could feel quite gay(happy) about, mainly because of it’s comical value that certainly strikes an emo(tional) chord.

… And the word retard somewhere.

    • Testsubject909

From that short description we got. I can tell you.

I know they could’ve went far more generic.

Mainly because. Him being lazy and that little bit that makes him sound like more of a hedonist.

      Yeah. Strike those two out.

But it also depends on what sort of generic you want, there’s variety in generic archetypes after all.

      • Flandre Scarlet

“He tends to say stupid things, but he’s an honest guy who doesn’t hide anything. Usually, he’s lazy and interested in doing things for pleasure, but one he’s fired up nothing can stop him.”

Really, if I had a dollar for every MC that had those characteristics (stupid, honest, lazy, gets fired up easy) I wouldn’t need to care about Fang since I would have enough money to buy Idea Factory and replace him.

        • Testsubject909

Go get-em blindly hopeful is a different sort of generic and your answer would’ve been the same.

There’s a lot of generic archetypes too. We could’ve made him the brooding emotional male character and that would’ve amounted to the same reaction.

It’s not the character traits that are so troublesome in the end but how they’re portrayed or rather… It’s how they make use of it. How well the story is told, how well the characters are shown and how they interact.

Edit: Some very generic traits can still bring about a very entertaining and compelling character if the writer is good enough…

And that’s where I got nothing to add because I don’t know the capabilities of the writer well enough to make judgement.

          • Flandre Scarlet

It’s a Compile Heart game, so I’m confident it won’t be stellar in the story-telling department. But disregarding that, the general setting and theme of this game combined with the character himself…it’s troubling how many of these JRPG protagonists end up so bad. It’s not because he’s male, either. I’ve played plenty of games with great male MCs, where they have some sense of personality other than “Designated Hero”. This guy just screams, in design and personality, Designated Hero. He looks boring, especially compared to the most stylistic and colorful girls he parties with. That’s my main beef with him and any others like him. They’re generic. They’re boring. They feel less like characters and more like…roles. And that’s not a good thing.

    • brian

He could be an amnesiac, but this game has that already.

      • Chiupon

        oooh, sick burn.

        • Testsubject909

Hehe… But yeah, the amnesiac girl is another one of em tropes.

  • zazza345

There are a couple details left off, mainly Tiara’s considered “a bit M” were M stands for masochistic…

Also, technically speaking, people are collecting the Furies because it’s rumored that gathering them will grant a wish .

Since the bad habit of not linking sources continues, most of character descriptions come from the official site.

Avalanche attacks and Air Combos were mentioned in this article:

    • Kai2591

      Thanks for the extra info!

lol Tiara’s an M? She looks more fitting to be an S to me haha.

      • Testsubject909

Since you’re going with the M for Masochist here, I take it S for Sadist huh?

She… doesn’t. Not really. She could be, but if anything she could just be a Tsundere… And that doesn’t necessarily mean a Sadist.

        • Kai2591

yep. or D. whichever you prefer ;)

Yes she could be a tsundere, but her face doesn’t look as angry as a tsundere would, like Noire’s (of Neptunia). But its still possible.

But since the official page states she’s a bit M, then perhaps tsundere masochist?

haha. look at us. discussing BDSM.
what has the world gotten to lol~

          • Testsubject909

You should go see me in the Drakengard 3 commentary.

      • puchinri

I thought that too at first, but it could relate to her upbringing. I’m not expecting them to flesh it out properly/play with it as a trope, but it would be fun to see them use it comedicly and as a serious point to her character.

        • Kai2591

True. Ojou-samas can go either way – S or M.

and yes that would be fun indeed :)

          • puchinri

Yeah, that’s certainly true. Quite versatile.

      • zazza345

I’m just going with what is written in the official site…

        • Kai2591

sure. I mean, I’m just saying haha

    • Testsubject909

      Capital M huh?

From where I was hanging a year ago where I could freely discuss more… shall we say risque matters.

M/s was for those who wanted to denote themselves as being in that relationship as opposed to the D/s, though M/s was not used often so I don’t know if it was just a few people or if it’s actively in use, compared to D/s. But if you didn’t catch on.

D/s and M/s, Major letter and minor letter is utilized to further underline the role here in the relationship. The Dominant, capital letter, is put in the forefront with, obviously, a more pronounced presence where the submissive is more subdued. And if you couldn’t figure it out from this. M/s would be Master and slave.

So a bit M, capital M, made me think “A bit Mistress?”

      • puchinri

I thought BDSM relates to sadomasochism though, both in the west and in JP. And usually, just saying M or S alone (for Japan) is enough to get the hint across (unless it gets confused with food/drink sizes).

        • zazza345

Yes, there is a DLC character in Neptune V that is considered M (and it’s shown in the events), for example – it’s said directly by Noire.

          • puchinri

I remember her. Oh, wait. maybe not. I’m thinking of the sadist, I believe (or was she a masochist afterall?).

          • zazza345

I think there’s confusion, but I didn’t wanto to say the name to avoid spoilers, as the character has not been released for the NISA version yet.

          • puchinri

AH, okay. Understandable~. The one I was thinking of was a main character actually (with the hat?), so I think I don’t know the one you’re talking about.

          • zazza345

It’s not her, that’s all I’m going to say.

          • puchinri

            I figured~.

        • Fire.fire.kun

S&M does mean sadism and masochism.

          • Kai2591

PS: I love your display picture, Fire.fire.kun.

            Nyaruko FTW!

          • Fire.fire.kun

Thanks. You gotta love this cute abomination. :P

          • puchinri

Okay, haha. I was confused about where all the master/slave part came from (in this context at least – I thought I was getting behind in the times or something, lol).

          • Testsubject909

M&M… I need to see if I got some candy around.

        • Testsubject909

BDSM is Bondage and Sado Masochism.

The BD part can be removed from the SM part. S&M is a term in itself after all, as is pointed out by Fire.fire.kun.

But yeah, in popular mainstream talk. BDSM is basically just Sadomasochism with the mental imagery of bondage overlaid but never connected, somehow, to the present BD portion.

          • puchinri

            You forgot the domination/discipline part~. :’D
            (Can never forget the D.)

          • Testsubject909

            M’bad. M’bad.

            Should’ve known better.

          • puchinri

No bad at all~. We just gotta make sure all the important bases are covered.

  • Misty Dawson

Pssssst… I have a secret for you guys.. if you don’t like the info on this game or anything about it… DON’T READ IT. There is an [x] you can click on to promptly leave the page and not think twice.

Looks good. Cant wait to see more.

    • Istillduno

      Come on seriously?

As much as I like the game so far (although I do have my worries about Fang turning out to be a barely fleshed out, bland, player insertion character), I can’t agree with this.

Negative opinions are just as important as positive ones, and if someone’s oh so fragile feelings are hurt by someone not likeing what they like, perhaps they should consider running off to try and live in the wild or something, or alternatively, growing a thicker goddam skin.

That said looking forward to more info and hoping to have my worries about Fang struck down.

      • Landale

Compile Heart fans on this site do have thick skin, we put up with a lot of people just shitting on the company’s games because it’s that company’s games. It’s not the negativity we have an issue with, there actually have been plenty of times where that’s actually lead to some decent discussions. The problem is most of the time that doesn’t happen, it’s just senseless bashing followed by “lalalala I can’t hear you! I’m right you’re wrong! lalalala” to any attempts to discuss WHY they might have an issue.

Honestly, if we actually had an issue with simple negativity we could just report most of the posts since there technically is a rule here against it.
        4. Keep an open mind: Siliconera covers a very wide variety of games from all over the world for a wide range of platforms. Don’t like a particular kind of game or a particular genre or a certain game system? That’s great, but remember, the rest of the world doesn’t necessarily care to know about it. Let people enjoy the things they enjoy, and don’t ruin their fun with negativity.

    • Actually, you would kinda have to read the articles to gauge if you dont like… It’s like the matrux or something.

  • Yuriangels

Dammit guys, we don’t know any gameplay. give it a chance it looks good.

  • Renaldi Saputra

uhh.. you FF fanboys/girls always complaining that these kind of JRPG looks like FF rip-off
do u think FF series are the best? they’re usually overrated

    • Istillduno

Looking at the way Square is going at the moment, this game turning out to be an FF rip-off may well be a good turn out for the FF fans, gotta get your fix somewhere and something tells me it might be a while before we see another console FF.

    • Actually its similar in the way that most fantasy rpgs are similar:
      Over the top character design
      Mind boggling physics
Futuristic setting + non-conventional tools and technology
      Super over-exaggerated skill sets
You know all the stuff that makes an rpg uber awesome.

    • ShadowDivz

Atleast it doesn’t take place in a highschool.

  • TheExile285

Wow, I am looking forward to this. That’s rare for me with console games, lol.

  • Haku_Luvs_You

I wonder if they’ll have DLC characters. Neptunia always does really well with its DLC characters (Cave is my favorite) so I wonder if this will have them too.

  • Chiupon

I think the comments about this game are more fascinating than what the game will likely be itself.

so many sick burns everywhere omg

anyways it just sounds like Wild Arms to me so far
with like Soul Eater mixed in

    • Testsubject909

We have someone here whose username is Wild Arms. Just gotta find someone whose username is Soul Eater and boom. We got a Siliconera Slash Pairing.

  • puchinri

The characters sound amusing at the very least. Fang reminds me a hint of Rumble from Dual Hearts. I’m kinda enjoying what I hear so far with the characters. Really curious about the other girl pictured in the battle screens though.

  • Neppygear

Looks a lot like Neptunia, but I love Neptunia, so that’s not really a problem. Consider this pre-ordered if NIS end up bringing it over.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Look at m’boi Fang’s pants! Maximum swag

Can’t wait for this, i love how compile heart and IF always try and improve with each new game and you can really see that since the first neptunia game.

  • Z

looks like characters are not convincing.
    But I will wait it.
    Same kind from others games.

  • I wanted this before, but after reading this article ALL OF MY WANT. I feel that Fang is a cool protagonist because he’s relateable lol. I know I’m going to have a great time with Fang, Tiara, Alyn, and the other characters we may meet. =^_^=

  • Fire.fire.kun

    Generic characters? lololololololololol.

If you know Neptunia, the characters are generic yet with a twist. In their normal forms, the characters fit moe archetypes but evolve with each iteration. Like Noire is a tsundere but also a workaholic. Blanc is a kuudere with anger issues. Vert is the oldest and most mature of them all, but is balanced out by having a incurable gaming addiction. And Neptune is the other half of a Manzai comedy act. What’s entertaining is that the characters are self-aware and poke fun at each others character traits and it has become a running gag throughout the game.

So FFF presents me with characters. Now I just need to know what they are going to do with them. Will the game’s tone be like mK2 where the characters are positive and more serious, or will the game be more like Victory where the characters joke around and talk-in-circles? Will it even be a comedy at all?

There’s too little information to judge at this time. But personally, I’m hoping this game turns out to be Neptunia in classic rpg wrapping with one or two “arrow to the knee” jokes. X)

  • Aristides

I wanted a female protagonist lol. Oh well whatever, at least the game’s mechanics sound good.

    • Testsubject909

      Drakengard 3.

      • Aristides

But would that game stand a ghost of a chance being localized T_T I seriously have to consider learning Japanese.

  • XiaomuArisu

Please be more then just mindless fanservice

    • Landale

You mean like almost all Compile Heart games?

  • Raltrios

Looks interesting enough. There’s at least some promise, anyway. I’ll be keeping an eye on this.

  • Schwer_Muta

Despite Compile Heart not having the best track record, the Neptunia battle system is good. And a good battle system means you’re already almost there as far as making an enjoyable game.

So I’m going to be optimistic until I’m given a reason not to be.

  • ShadowDivz

Fairy Fencer F is being developed by the Neptunia team and it uses the Neptunia battle system.

God i hope it’s not the first ones…

  • Pekola

It’s so early to tell how this will turn out. I just wish they’d do something serious this time, since they’ve done so much light-hearted stuff recently.

My main confusion comes from the mixed signals we’ve been given in the art. The characters look cute and frilly, but we’ve also got art from Amano–which looks a bit more grounded.

The music we’ve heard so far sounds serious. I suspect this game might be similar to the Ar Tonelico series—which has the kind of VN/Girl woo-ing but also had a strong story.

This isn’t to say that JRPG’s need to be srs bsns, but we’ve gotten so much of the lighter and cuter kind of JRPG’s en masse this generation of consoles:

    Hyperdimension Neptunia
    Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2
    Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory

    Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention
    Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten

    Record of the Agarest War
Record of the Agarest War Zero
Record of the Agarest War 2

    Cross Edge
    Mugen Souls
Ar Tonelico Qoga: The Knell of Ar Ciel

    Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny
The Guided Fate Paradox (Coming Soon?)
    Time and Eternity (Coming Soon)

    Atelier Rorona: Alchemist of Arland
    Atelier Totori: Adventurer of Arland
Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland
Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk

That’s on the PS3. So no, at the very least you ARE getting games which you can cherish, accompanied by special editions and what not. I’m not saying bitter backlash against people who like the games is okay, though.

I’m not going to bash on Compile/IF. Even though their output has lots of objective flaws. But I will say that it is in bad taste to see all this bickering from both sides. People are bitter because the PS3 has done jack-squat to fill the gaping hole that is lack of Epic JRPG’s we used to have long long ago.

If there’s 10 JRPG’s that cater to everyone like (dare I say it!?) Final Fantasy, it’s a miracle.

    What do we have?

    Final Fantasy XIII
    Final Fantasy XIII-2
    Eternal Sonata
    Tales of Graces F

    Star Ocean 4

    White Knight Chronicles
    Resonance of Fate

I might have missed one or two. But people are starving for that epic JRPG experience. Unfortunately, small companies like Compile might not be the right ones to direct your rage at.

It would be a major hype deflation if this does actually turn out to be like Compile’s last output in tone (at least for those expecting something different.)

tl;dr: People are looking for the fix. But that doesn’t mean they have to smear poop over compile heart.

    • Landale

I’m just going to say, “Lighter and Cuter kind of JRPG” and “Agarest” together don’t really compute. I’m not really sure deicide, genocide, murder, suicide, rape, incest, human sacrifices, necrophilia (admittedly no one involved in that one noticed which actually kinda makes it worse), and torture among other things can qualify as “Lighter and Cuter”. Sure the advertisement for the stuff was all “Look! Pretty girls EVERYWHERE!”, but the second you actually get into those games it gets dark as hell really fucking fast.

      • Pekola

I should have made a better distinction. I just wanted to use a term that didn’t come off as insulting. Agarest isn’t really…cute.

Niche might be a better term.

  • Male lead? It’s been a while Record of Agarest War. In my opinion I’d prefer the usual all-girls, no-guys theme, but I’ll see how Fang comes out. If he becomes even HALF the man Leonhardt or Toma was then he deserves my respect.

Also heroine decided; Tiara here I come.

  • that girl in blue gothic lolita ” Tiara ” kinda reminds on the heroine of erementar gerad ” ren ” (her skirt is kinda too short) .___.

  • Crazy_O

I like the Neptunia games, but if they are aiming for an action RPG, I hope they get the combat right. Which means no dropping frames (I’m okay with having to install things first so that there won’t be a frame loss). I won’t be judging it until I played it myself.

  • SoundMatch

Once they fire me with good gameplay, ain’t nothing gonna stop me from getting this game. I’m relating a lot to Fang, just wish I looked as good
