Some Of Senran Kagura’s Ridiculousness Spilled Into Valhalla Knights 3

By Spencer . May 16, 2013 . 10:06pm

Compared to the earlier games, Valhalla Knights 3 has more of a dark fantasy feel since the main base is a Prison Castle. The town is seedy with hostess clubs and sexy nurses, but, hey, this is a game that’s about making the best of bad choices says the producer.

Oh, and Valhalla Knights 3 is also a game where you can get a DLC pack that lets you change how big the boobs are on your characters. The Orbic Protrusion Adjustment Integrator or O.P.A.I customizer (oppai is Japanese for boobs) adds a slide bar for cup size for female characters only.

Marvelous AQL will release the Orbic Protrusion Adjustment Integrator for free at launch along with a DLC mission. Ever since Senran Kagura became a massive hit for Marvelous AQL we’ve seen less original stuff like Little King’s Story or Avalon Code. Instead, their self-published games, even Fate/Extra CCC, focus more and more on boobs.

Perhaps a better title would be Some of Seran Kagura’s Rediculousness busted into Valhalla Knights 3

  • Haku_Luvs_You

Senran Kagura, ridiculous?!?! I think I might faint….

Wait WTF this is DLC.. Screw blaming Senran Kagura, DLC for bigger boobs sounds stupid!

    • biskmater

its free, my friend, no need to get riled up.

  • AkuLord3

“Ever since Senran Kagura became a massive hit for Marvelous AQL we’ve seen less original stuff like Little King’s Story or Avalon Code. Instead, their self published games focus more and more boobs, even Fate/Extra CCC.”

…yeah because big boobs never existed until now : P, most be Senran Kagura…no doubt

    • Pang Chee Jie

I believe It has more to do with both games being made by Marvelous than anything.

    • natchu96

One of favorite enemy designs in CCC was flat :(

Caster has a bust though, and she’s awesome. But people like her for the fox anatomy and her personality than her bust.

On the non-female side, Gilgamesh surely has the most fans. Fans have existed since ancient times, so surely he has them by the steamlinerloads. Archer may keep up, though. And obviously these two guys don’t have boobs >_<

  • MXC

This title is ridiculous! You can’t change breast size in SK. This isn’t the first game to have something like this either. Look at Phantasy Star where you can do this. Marvelous AQL also released Rune Factory 4 and Soul Sacrifice where none of this happened. Don’t jump on SK and Marvelous AQL just because breasts are involved please.

    • That’s the funniest part (and most -ridiculous- part), you can’t change the breast size in SK lol

        Not yet, at least.

        I hope you’re taking notes, Takaki-san. lol

      • MXC

In a way you can. IIRC can’t you give one girl’s outfit to another(i.e. Yagyuu wears Mirai’s goth loli outfit)?

        • Yes you can, but boobs stay small/big, they adapt to the clothes, the breast dont adapt to them xD

    • fds_nextdart

Most games that offer customization allows some degree of boobage customization. PSO, DW, MMOs, etc. Let’s not act as if we’ve never had the chance to do any of this~.

      • Kevin Schwarz

That’s the only good thing about the WWE games, you can actually create boobs as big as those in Senran Kagura to the girls you create. Why are boobs a taboo for japanese games? You even see them naked in anime all the time.

      • MXC

Oh no I never said they don’t have that. Note that I mentioned said “This isn’t the first game to have something[boob customization] like this either.” I know that its in some games that I have played and the first one that came to mind was the Phantasy Star series.

    • Crimson_Cloud

It’s worth noting but not making a new topic like it’s something out of place. Dragon’s Prophet has 4-5 sliders concerning boobs only, and I don’t see that being a shocking news. ^^

      • MXC

? I’m kinda confused, make a new topic? Elaborate please.

        • Crimson_Cloud

What I meant was that this news shouldn’t be as a solo topic. These kinds of things aren’t new, so it should go with the last two lines regarding some other news about the game. But they made this boobs news like it’s a scandalous front page topic. Savvy? ^^

          • MXC

Oh Ok Lol. Thing is that some of us have been influenced by the Japanese breast fetish(not there isn’t any here already) and might actually jump on this as important you know. Everyone has their own set of values. Honestly kinda fun news for me cuz well you know.

          • Crimson_Cloud

Yeah I understand. And sorry if you didn’t understood what I wrote earlier. Not a native speaker so my writing can give some other meaning. ^^’

    • I thought you knew? Even the slightest bit of fanservice sends the writers here into a serious bout of displeasure.

      • MXC

Oh I know. I’ve made bookmarks of some of those pages for lulz of faulty info or just the “ridiculousness”. But I just felt the need to point out that SK is not connected to this(most likely) and Marvelous AQL doesn’t only make boob-emphasized games.

  • alixraen

Not like this feature hasn’t been featured in multiple games already, it’s merely being put at the forefront as a selling point. Not really something I agree with, but hey, if it’s bringing in the money…I can’t really blame them.

  • deathman00789

Avalon Code needs some kind of sequel on the 3DS

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      Totally agreed.

  • Boobies. That is all. But I honestly don’t think Senran Kagura has much to do with this. If that’s the case why not include some of the outfits and hair styles too?

  • Domii

Are their any gameplay videos of this game?

    • Draparde

Not anything extensive. the last video they posted seemed to have the most. but it was a trailer though so its focus was in various places. i think it showed the most fighting of any of the other trailers however.

    • Luna Kazemaru

      Uhh pso 2

    • It’s in Japanese, but here’s 25 minutes of gameplay and info.

      • ShadowDivz

Thanks, gameplay doesnt seem to bad. Nothing groundbreaking. Im mostly interested in the story anyway.

  • Tenshiken

Maybe Xseed is practicing for Senran Kagura.(Hopefully)

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    O.P.A.I customization. Brilliant.

  • Spider-Man

I love boobs, I cannot stress this enough. I want this game. I am Spider-Man afterall. This’ll be all over the Daily Bugle if this gets localized!

    • Testsubject909

Considering all the different girlfriends you’ve had.

      It’s obvious you like boobs.

Ah. My brethren! Let us enjoy this bounty!

      • Spider-Man

Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Black Cat, Michele Gonzales, Ms. Marvel, Debra Whitman, Liz Allan, Betty Brant, Lisa Skye, Marcy Kane, Sarah Rushman, and at one point Spider-Woman.

        Yep, boobs are indeed wonderful.

  • That passive aggressiveness…

I’m all for new I.P. and taking risks but it’s not like the new stuff this generation has been all that great (Avalon Code, Arc Rise Fantasia, etc). Hell, I’d take another safe Zelda compare to the last couple of terrible games in the series.

How Valhalla Knights got four games (including wii game) I’ve got no clue. If they want take the “3rd” one in a slightly new direction with tons of fan-service and a more anime aesthetic it’s all good. I’ve had zero interest in the series since playing the first one. I don’t care what direction they take with it.

  • kool_cid414

Having the option to not have huge breasts sounds like a non ridiculous thing to me. Options are always appreciated and from the picture above the choice whether to have bakunyu or petanko or at least modest size breasts is a good thing for me. That being said I always play as myself in games with customizable characters so (since I’m a guy) this has no real benefit or disadvantage for me.

    • Testsubject909

I tend to prefer to play with a female character on screen for most games, most being the key word, there are times i prefer using a male character.

It’s mostly a “If I’m going to be looking at a character on screen for hours on end. Might as well be a woman”. The gender of the protagonist doesn’t impede my capability to empathize, sympathize or relate to any given situation.

      • kool_cid414

I understand and respect that I just personally like to put myself into games when there isn’t a named character/personality I just enjoy it that way.

        • Testsubject909

          I find that often difficult.

Even with silent protagonists. Mainly because, an Avatar in a game is a difficult thing to find. More often then not you will always play a Character.

If at any time someone reacts in a way to depict the silent and supposed “blank slate” character in some way, whether it be to denote how brave they are, or how calm they are, or just that the character is always silent…

Boom. That supposedly “blank slate avatar-to-the-player” just got a characteristic, a character trait. Minute though it may be, the way the world reacts to said character slowly creates a character.

Even in games where little can interact with the character, like Samus Aran, you can still draw a lot about her personality solely by where she is and what she’s doing in general…. And the opening scrawling text. But still….

And then they made her talk…

          • kool_cid414

Maybe I should of said become the closest to myself as possible lol. It’s a touchy subject but I personally don’t think a personality can be portrayed from action alone and found that characters with actual voice and personality to be a better fit. Basically I am one of the crazy peole who didn’t mind Metroid other M and found no problems with giving her a voice but that’s not a subject I want to get into completely. Thanks for the discussion though I always enjoy your posts.

      • ShadowDivz

“If I’m going to be looking at a character on screen for hours on end. Might as well be a woman”.
Are you a sage of some kind? Those words of wisdom don’t come from the average man.

  • WhyWai

what? Senran Kagura does not have adjustable boobs size….

more like most online games with character customisation have that feature..

    • Testsubject909

Saint’s Row The Third had a sex appeal slider.

      • psycho_bandaid

I admit I had a good laugh when I found out I could increase the size of my characters package.

        • Testsubject909

  • Dano

I fail to see how this is a bad thing.

  • Lazulis

Oh yes, remind me of Avalon Code, and how it will probably never get a sequel/enhanced version for 3DS.

Meh, just because both have to do with boobs, doesn’t mean one caused the other. At least it ain’t as ridic as Scarlet Blade.

  • Phantasy star online 2 have much more better OPAI system!

  • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

    Oppai haters gonna hate.

  • Testsubject909

There is an actual hentai game focused entirely on Oppai. I forget the name… Oppai Slider? Something something… I know it has Oppai in it.

…. Oppai also reminds me of Parco Folgore. Now, don’t expect me to do smileys often, I don’t. But the occasion asks it so…

    ( • )( •ԅ(≖△≖ԅ)

Oh yes… And… Well I couldn’t find a proper clip for it but.

As Sun Quan said: Everyone! Let us enjoy this!

Time stamp correct? Okay, yup. Should get you to that awesome awkward implied happy-ending ending.

    • brian

      Oppai Sensou?
I know that “series” has two games, so I’ll pick the most hilarity inducing description to copy/paste:
“Bustchest continent is at war: Big Breasts and Flat Chest kingdoms fight to determine once and for all what size is better.
Hart, the protagonist, loves all sizes equally. According to Breasts God he has a special power which can save the continent, so without a second thought Hart starts his quest as a breasts-loving messiah.”

      • Testsubject909

No, no, but hey new stuff.

Though if we’re talking big breasts… .We could talk about Seikon no Qwazer or however I’m supposed to write that title. There’s also another one I forget with ninjas stealing breast size because big breasts means fortune with small breasted women being poor.

It’s pretty much comedy at this point isn’t it?

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    Give it a rest

  • brian

    Massive hit?
Was that a pun about their massive boobs?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ Oppai.

  • TheExile285

Can you blame them? They make games to sell. Besides, SS had no fan service.

  • BenderIsGreat

You can change boob size in Dragon’s Dogma, too, among other games with a character creation screen. Honestly it’s not anything new. Valhalla Knights does look good, though.

So many games, so little time……

  • biskmater

Someone got up on the wrong side of reporting activism today…

  • Brimfyre

So is Siliconera feeling the pressure from Kotaku and Destrutoid to start making unwanted and unfounded personal statements in news articles to try and stir up the sexism controversy pot for hits.

Or is this, hopefully, just a one time thing.

    • Or, you know, maybe people are just scared of seeing a publisher that was once known for putting out dozens of amazing new IP going down the pandering route.

      • Brimfyre

I’m not saying it isn’t in questionable taste, but it is hardly the first game to do this, and really has NOTHING to do with SK. It’s drawing ridiculous (there’s that word again) conclusions just to get some more hits. Shameless.

And I also doubt adding a boob slider is really responsible for them not putting out dozens of amazing new IPs. Like it took a team of 20 individuals, pulled off other projects, to add a boob slider. Come on.

I expect better from this site.

        • Um, no. You’re missing the point entirely. This isn’t about a stupid boob slider.

The fact is that MAQL began to focus more on T&A in their promotion of these games after Senran Kagura’s success. Fate/Extra CCC and Valhalla Knights both came after. That’s reason for concern given the state of the Japanese market.

You can deny it all you want and you can insist we’re reaching for hits and you can keep telling everyone there’s nothing to see here. However, that doesn’t change what happened. Senran Kagura came out. The boob-focused marketing worked. Following that, MAQL began to use fanservice as a marketing tool for their other upcoming games as well.

Here’s another fact. The original Senran Kagura is not a “good” game. It has framerate issues, it has missing features where they were expected. It was a product that wouldn’t normally be considered up to par. However, it sold well because, hey, boobs and cute chicks. Similarly, Valhalla Knights is not exactly a reputable series either.

Every game in the series so far has sucked. This is MAQL resorting to fanservice to sell what they know is a mediocre game. I mean, hell, it got a 7 from two of Famitsu’s reviewers. Famitsu are normally known for being extremely lenient.

There’s precedent for concern, and that’s the point. It’s about the larger picture, not some silly boob slider feature.

          • Brimfyre

Well I understand what you are saying and your concern for sure, but I think you are still drawing too many conclusions.

Sex sells. Always has, always will.

If the game is good though, who cares what they use to promote it. Like I said I doubt the boob slider really took away a lot of creativity they could have used else ware.

          • If the game is good though, who cares what they use to promote it.

And that’s the point. How many “boob” games are actually that good? We’ve all seen the complaints flung against Compile Heart games and others like them. Valhalla Knights is just another name to add to the list.

That’s why there’s reason for concern. You don’t want developers getting the wrong message. Look, people don’t complain about fanservice in Fire Emblem, even though there clearly is some. People aren’t complaining about the sexual references in Drakengard or in Killer is Dead either. No one really complained about the bathing scene in The 3rd Birthday either. That was very fanservicey.

The reason is that those are trusted games from trusted developers. You can count on them to not lose their way. MAQL were a fantastic publisher last generation. The amount of brand new IP they put out on DS, PSP and Wii was astounding, and a lot of it was damn good. And now, we have the producer of Half-Minute Hero, a quirky and awesome retro-style RPG, making Senran Kagura. That doesn’t… feel nice, you know?

          • Brimfyre

I haven’t played or really seen SK in action, but I’ve heard it’s a pretty good game though, if that means anything.

And I think people do complain about all the fan service stuff in the games you mentioned (except maybe Drakengard, because that is expected to make people feel uneasy).

Personally I think the Compile Heart games are some of the worst games I ‘ve ever played in my life. So again, it is the game that matters. If VK is good then a boob slider doesn’t matter.

And if you compare a boob slider to all the amounts of boobs in CH games and SK, it’s about in line with the Fire Emblem fan service.

If they aren’t putting out as much product it is likely due to the same problem every small developer is having. Cost. The three systems you mentioned were all cheap to produce games on. Now they have to upgrade to HD. It’s killing everyone. If they have to add a boob slider, it might be slightly dirty, but if it helps finance their game then it might be a necessary evil. Sad to say.

          • And I think people do complain about all the fan service stuff in the games you mentioned

Sure, there’s always going to be some people that feel uncomfortable around fanservice, but for the most part, you don’t really see anyone raising a fuss over those games. The reason Compile Heart and games like Valhalla Knights get called out for it is because it’s evident they aren’t good games, and that the fanservice is meant to compensate for that.

It’s been a recurring problem in the anime industry for a while now, and in recent years it’s begun to spill over into games. People don’t want that to happen. It isn’t to raise controversy or get clicks. It’s because, believe or not, people still care about games from Japan and don’t want to see them go to hell.

          • Brimfyre

Got it. I misunderstood. I thought you were saying the previous Valhalla games were good games, and because they were adding fan service stuff it was making it crappy. I didn’t realize they were always bad.

          • ShadowDivz

            Makes you wonder doesn’t it?
If they were always bad why are we getting a third one?

          • seiya19

Marvelous published 3 Ikki Tousen beat ’em up games before Senran Kagura existed, 2 on PSP and one on PS2. They weren’t new to this “niche”. And given how they have yet to publish a new one after those, it seems that Senran Kagura has taken its place.

In any case, using a common feature from an unrelated game as an excuse to bring up all this is blatant sensationalism. And I don’t believe it’s the place of a gaming news site to tell people which games they should support/like and which don’t, don’t you agree ?

If the intent is to express an opinion of the current gaming industry or an event in particular, why not write an editorial instead ? This way, people can clearly separate opinions from facts, and make their own minds regarding the subject at hand.

          • And I don’t believe it’s the place of a gaming news site to tell people which games they should support/like and which don’t, don’t you agree ?

I don’t recall us ever doing that. We pointed out an observation. People are free to make up their own minds. As for Ikki Tousen, we’re well aware of that series and it was never marketed as heavily as Senran Kagura has been. Not even close.

          • seiya19

Not directly, but there are ways to manipulate information in order to push an agenda, as I’m sure you’re aware. The way people responded to the article is proof enough.

There was no need to bring up Senran Kagura here, nor there’s any evidence of its relative success having anything to do with the other Marvelous titles mentioned, as suggested by the last paragraph of the article. For example, the original Little King’s Story was considered a flop before SK existed, and the re-imagining did even worse, despite the inclusion of fanservice. And given how the “Fate” franchise started as an eroge, including fanservice elements on one of its spin-offs should surprise no one.

In addition, Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games keep being released as well without any issue, and we’re also getting Kaio, which I really doubt it includes any fanservice… As long as these kind of games sell, we’ll get more of them, regardless of how Kagura does.

Regarding Ikki Tousen, I don’t know how much marketing the games got compared to Kagura, but we’re clearly taking about different scenarios here, given how one was a licensed property with an anime/manga already existing while the other was a new IP. It makes sense for Marvelous to push their own new IP more than a licensed game, specially if they wanted it to become a multimedia franchise after the success of the first game.

      • Luna Kazemaru

Honesty that’s pretty funny seeing as how SK didn’t start the boob slider thing just saying.

      • HPN

Seriously? I stopped going to Kotaku specifically because of this contrived trollbaiting masquerading as games journalism. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Senran Kagura, and avatar customization like this predates Marvelous AQL itself. In addition, Soul Sacrifice came out after Senran Kagura Shinovi and is not “going down the pandering route.” Try backing up this article’s rampant generalizations with at least the semblance of truth.

        • Soul Sacrifice is a Sony game. Owned by Sony, funded by Sony, published by Sony, guided by Sony. It has no bearing on MAQL’s own strategy whatsoever.

    • Or, you know, maybe people are just scared of seeing a publisher that was once known for putting out dozens of amazing new IP going down the pandering route.

  • Muhammad Haris

you can do that on almost all korean MMORPG.
Vindictus is one of an example.
but as for handheld game, this is god send feature that otaku would like to consider. hehehe…

  • ” Ever since Senran Kagura became a massive hit for Marvelous AQL we’ve seen less original stuff like Little King’s Story or Avalon Code. Instead, their self-published games, even Fate/Extra CCC, focus more and more on boobs.”

What? MAQL collectively has rarely released original stuff anyway. Even before they all merged, the largest portion of each of their libraries were sequels or throwaway games based on large properties. Even then, the original games they did have were all created by actual development studios, like Matrix, CIMA, and Examu with MAQL having only a small (as in Little King’s Story) or no (like in Arcana Heart) hand in development.

As far as original titles since Avalon Code, there’s been Soul Sacrifice, Kaio (in development), Fate/Extra, and 30 Second Hero.

  • Hinataharem

    I loved Avalon Code!

Also, there seems to be a little too much opinion in this article. Just saying. Stick to relaying info only. Don’t become Kotaku

    • Testsubject909

      Okay, serious time.

I hafta ask because I have met some girls with certain issues with this in online games who had to go find mods to adjust their ingame character models but.

      Let me ask here.

How do the female audience/commenters here feel about the Oppai slider?

Barring aside the whole obviously guys will use it to put their favorite breast sizes on girls thing. I just gotta ask. How do you, personally, feel about it? What impact does it bring to you and your customization?

And I’m asking also because, well, we can customize just about anything on a human being that is physically easily noticeable. Facial features, sizes, broad or thin figures, short or tall, muscular or not… So breast size customization.

      What’s your take on it…

PS. Don’t start insulting breast sizes under B cup or over F cup. I have met some girls who have issues because of a few jerkasses going “Ew, her tits are too big” and for smaller sizes, well that’s more commonly thought of since it’s more commonly talked about, but similar concept.

      • Hinataharem

Well, personally, I’m kind of neutral toward the statement. I don’t feel like it’s necessary, and I understand the audience it goes towards. But, at the same time, its a fictional character. Anything is possible. If a character has long black hair and blue eyes? Sure. Tall, and squeaky voice with huge nose and afro? Why not? Big breasts? Well, it exists in real life, so I guess it’s fair game. I can’t hate on something that is only an option.
