In Freedom Wars, You Play As Criminals Trying To Earn Their Freedom

By Sato . May 21, 2013 . 12:00pm

Earlier today, we reported that Sony’s teaser trailer of Panapticon’s actual title is Freedom Wars, a cooperative multiplayer game for the PlayStation Vita, which also included a new trailer. In addition, Sony have updated the game’s official website with some new info, including the meaning behind “Panapticon”.

Freedom Wars will have a story focusing on the word ‘freedom’. The setting is in the near future, where the world is in ruins and the outside world can no longer sustain any form life. Mankind has created cities called “Panapticon” in various regions, where they fight to find a way to live.

However, resources have dried up and conflicts in each city occur as the people living within the Panapticon struggle to obtain the research needed to live in such harsh environment. In order for the Panapticon to manage their people, most of them are currently serving a penal servitude.

Those who are under the penal servitude, are simply labeled as “Criminals,” and are forced into a labor, called “Volunteer,” which basically means to participate in war. You, the player, will be a Criminal who has been charged with a sentence of 1,000,000 years and will be fighting for your freedom.

In order for the Criminals to regain their freedom, they must go on missions to “Recapture” the civilians and their comrades who’ve been captured by giant enemies, called Abductors. Participating in these missions will mitigate the sentences imposed upon the Criminals.

The above image shows various regions of Japan, which is marked “Current war situation” and includes a list with various cities and regions such as Osaka, Hokkaido and Kyoto (Though not specified, the PT could stand for Panapticon.) To the right is an image of Yahoo map, that seems to show various key points in Shibuya, Tokyo, including what looks like conflict areas and other points of interest.

It has also been reported that Freedom Wars will feature online competitive multiplayer and co-op modes with up to 8 players, through Wi-Fi and AdHoc connectivity. There will also be features that uses the PlayStation Vita’s GPS and Near functions.

  • Taylor Greene

Cant wait to see the game in action.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Wow… Freedom Wars looks pretty promising. I can’t wait to hear more.

  • sTrAiGhT tHrU CrU

Hey, this looks really promising. I wish it weren’t so far away.

    • TheExile285

I know right? The waiting game begins again, lol.

Then again, some of the bigger Vita titles have felt rushed so I want them to take their time with this in a sense.

  • Nightmesh

NA release and I’ll give the first lock of hair off my first born child. Come on Sony. Do a Big N move and localize this one.

    • almostautumn

There has never been a Studio Japan title not localized, no?

      • sandra10

Not always by Sony but there has never been one left unlocalized as far as I know. We’re getting it from someone, probably Sony since their European division trademarked Panopticon.

  • JMaster3000

And the dude was correct xD

  • TheExile285

This is looking and sounding good. I’m impressed.

  • I cant wait for this! NA release please! Also competitive MP? i wonder how that works could be really interesting!

    • Solomon_Kano

Well, they’ve already trademarked Panopticon in Europe, so we should be seeing this relatively quick.

      • benhofb

Well, and the trailer had both Japanese and English text, so hopefully that’s worth something…

        • Solomon_Kano

Eh, I wouldn’t look into that too much. The Japanese enjoy putting English into things at random.

I’d imagine that had more to do with the trailer being set in London than any plans for international release, otherwise we’d have gotten the trailer subtitled (like Guilty Gear Xrd’s trailer, which debuted at a Japanese event with subtitles already).

  • PersonaSpace

I’m definitely looking forward to this game, although I do hope it has a competent single player campaign. I don’t know many Vita owners.

  • JustThisOne

This look beautiful! But Freedom Wars sounds like a really strange name.

I’m also curious why they chose to use abductors instead of giant death machines or metal gears.

  • Death Saved

Hmm what happens when i get my sentence down to 0?

  • One word comes to mind… WANT!

    • S- Class Wizard KaRamo

      you and me bout

  • Solomon_Kano

Competitive MP you say? Interesting. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of this.

  • Romored

It’s “PanOpticon”, not “panApticon”: from “pan” (everything/everybody/everyone) + “opticon” (to observe) in Greek.

    • mahrze

Hence why I like it more than Freedom Wars… Ugh.

  • Strid

Panopticon was a cool title [not to mention fitting], “Freedon Wars” is just generic. I guess this means it’s coming to the west then, if they had to retard up the title.

    • Kevadu

Actually, “Freedom Wars” probably sounds a lot less generic in Japan. They’re using the English for it, after all.

I’m seriously hoping they use “Panopticon” overseas..

      • Strid

I can see that, since they’re using the English for it and knowing they get a kick out of such as that. But like you say, for us, I hope they go with Panopticon; not that it much matters.

  • This information is worthless without a US release date attached.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Sounds cool. Now I really want to see how the actual gameplay turns out.

On another note, “Freedom Wars” sounds a bit cheesy. If they ever made a sequel to the IO Interactive developed squad-based TPS “Freedom Fighters”, I’d used that for the name… Damnit, now I’m reminded again that there isn’t a sequel in the first place. =(

    • Vernauth

yeah maybe they should keep Panopticon for overseas tittles

  • Highasthesky

Is it bad, that this game only caught my interest because of it’s anime style?

    • Warboss Aohd

      it’s not moe…………so no, no it’s not.

    • Firekitty

Nope. This gen has been inundated with ‘realistic’ graphics. It’s refreshing to see something with a bit of sylization to it.

      • neogeno

Indeed. Tha’ts one of the most interesting things about this game. Usually Sony would turn a blind eye to games like this but to see them giving it support is pretty awesome and refreshing.

    • Kai2591

agreed, need more anime-style games. and I don’t mean moe.

  • RichyGaming

Screenshots remind me sooooo much of God Eater Burst.

  • vileBrenman

Oh o.. I hope it comes to the states. The whole gps thing sounds like it’s geared for a map of Japan hmm but who knows.

    • benhofb

The whole GPS bit is probably something with near. And no matter, it is a Japan Studios game; I doubt it would skip us.

  • Jordan Coleman

Well it certainly looks cool. Not to hyped about it being a multiplayer game though.

    • benhofb

Well, it seems fairly story-focused, so I’d assume you don’t have to play it online if you don’t want to; just like Soul Sacrifice.

      • tubers

        Let’s just hope so.

  • Warboss Aohd

    not bad, not bad.

  • Damn, never thought I’d be happy to be considered a criminal, until now that is lol. I need this game. Can’t wait to see more on it =^_^=

  • benhofb

I just found myself drooling on my keyboard.
Still can’t believe this is a Vita game. Dem grifix…

    • Craig Mikucki

I hope you don’t drool on your Vita.

  • yellowmage

100,000 years from now is considered the “near”-future?

    • Damarius Wingfield

      We need SUSPENDED ANIMATION dammit!

    • tubers

Who knows.. maybe PT means something else.. didn’t really say AD.

  • badmoogle

This is the third Vita game that makes me genuinely excited to play it.I hope it will not be Japan only.

  • This looks like a great game, day one for now!

  • Freedom Wars sounds so blah, need a more exciting title in Japanese that no one but a select few can understand and it sounds cool

    Jiyuu no Senran sounds better

    • Wrestling_God

This will be localize worldwide for sure, why the heck would they name their game too Japanese?

  • revenent hell

If this doesn’t get a US release that would be a damn shame!

    • The SCEE guy talked about it so I’m pretty sure it will

      • revenent hell

Oh… You my friend just brightened my day! Until its otherwise stated ;)

        • noctis_nox

Not only SCEE but SCEA as well they hyped it on twitter.

  • Hinataharem

The only game where a character can have two black magnets strapped to their butt. XD

  • WhyWai

well Siliconera, 100,000 years in future is not “near future” in my opinion. XD

It does looks good, and Studio Japan is quality guaranteed. But it seem too Japan focused. Not sure how will it play if localizes…

  • psycho_bandaid

wait–did that baby get born with a 1000000 year sentence then? that is pretty harsh. I thought minors got lighter sentences.

    • Ferrick

according to the trailer, everyone gets convicted, no matter what

  • noctis_nox

He still looks like light! XD
Definitely excited for tomorrow’s another info.reveal.

  • Bobby Jennings

This looks amazing! Looks like Vita is getting exactly what it needs! Oh and competitive Multiplayer?! Might just be buying two copies.

  • Vash bane

sounds cool looks cool but the online part I wonder how that will go

  • Elvick

Hope the single player is a decent adventure. SS was great, had a great story but the single player gameplay structure was almost non-existent, since it was basically just a way to tie together arenas they wanted for MP. Still love SS though.

  • Reminds me of God Eater. So buying this game if it gets localized. Fill the void that Monster Hunter has left.

  • ShadowDivz

    Born into the pack
there’s no choice, but take orders, to attack!
    Locked up in chains
I give in, but my hunger still remains!

Not content to live this way
    Being led by the blind
    Got to plan my dispersal

Time to leave them all behind!

    • neogeno

      *cue epic guitar solo*

  • BenderIsGreat

Hey Japan, I need this game for my little Sony reality box. When’s it coming here again?

  • Mercilust

Unique hunter vibe, grappling hook mechanic, coop and multiplayer…
Is the the lost planet replacement ive been looking for?
AND ON VITA!! and it looks so pretty.

  • Alberto Maytorena

Criminal in the first image: “Just as planned”

  • I must say this is a pretty Vita game.

  • Billy Kostyra

    God I love my Vita
