Final Fantasy Tactics S Launches In Japan With Two New Jobs

By Spencer . May 28, 2013 . 1:37am

Are you ready to return to Ivalice? Square Enix has a new Final Fantasy Tactics social spinoff that includes over 300 jobs from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2. Final Fantasy Tactics S even introduces two brand new job, the Air Samurai and Musician.

Players start by creating a clan and recruiting members with gil. You can earn gil by completing quests and strengthen you clan further by purchasing new gear. What’s neat is Final Fantasy Tactics S has a clan vs. clan battle system where you can challenge other players. You can bring up to nine clan members into a battle. It looks like Mobage simplified the "tactics" part of the game since the maps look like flat fields. I suppose that should be expected since this is a social game, after all. Final Fantasy Tactics S is out in Japan now. It has not been announced for the West, but DeNA (the company that owns Mobage) brought over Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade so there’s a chance it will be localized.

Air Samurai? I was hoping to see it with a basketball lol

  • I got really excited for this! :D *checks article* I was hoping for the 3DS. :( But hey! At least they remember they still have this series, right? *nervous laughter*

    • Kevin Shao

At the very end of the video it says only for smart phone…

      • I didn’t watch the video, but in every article the platforms are always mentioned. Hence why I wrote “…hoping for the 3DS.”

  • Chris Yuen

*Read title. Was hoping it’s for the 3DS. Comes across the word social* My face: =(

  • Detrimont

what’s the difference between Musician and Bard(statically and ability wise?)

  • Kevadu

    Doesn’t look very tactical…

    • Trevor Nicolaysen

On the other hand if you look at the battles and think “Soul Nomad!” or “Atlantica!” it looks extremely tactical. I doubt it, though.

  • Ahmad Reyner Nabeel

Whew, I missed this series and yet Square Enix release them as social game :(

  • JustThisOne

Battle system seems really different. I’m kind of interested to see how it works. So far, it looks like your standard turn-based affair, but with your entire guild in on it or something.

  • Kotorin

I don’t understand why don’t they put this shit on 3DS. The production value shouldn’t be too high like home console games plus a bunch of people would buy it…
    Kotori-san is disapointed…

    • michel

Perhaps putting it on handhelds/consoles has some overhead costs that would devour the margin. Moreover, it would probably put the game against competitors of a different league than “Razzle” & C. ;)

    • Clearly they won’t make any money back whatsoever if they were to put it on the 3DS and make it an actual game.

      None, whatsoever.

    • Pokahontas McGuigan

its not on 3ds because its not a real game, its a social game. theyre not made to be fun theyre made to take money from stupid people

      • ShadowDivz

Careful, last time someone said something like that they got chewed out by Isshan.
        …Not that i don’t agree.

  • WyattEpp

This doesn’t sound like FFT. This sounds like heresy. Even moreso than FFTA. I’m sad.

    • Altin

It’s All The Bravest all over again.

But yeah, I’d like me some FFT2 or Tactics A3.

  • Randy Marsh

No point in hating something I haven’t tried. As long it is not another ATB, I’ll give it a go if it comes to the west. I’ve had fun Brigade and possibly I’ll have fun with this.

  • Roberto Maselli

My last hopes of seeing a proper Final Fantasy Tactics 2 are dead.
    Damn Square Enix.

  • Guilherme Matheus Silva

Two brand new Job Classes, eh? hum… Musician may be new in the Tactics games, but not in the whole series since it appears in The Four Heroes of Light… but Air Samurai is indeed new =]

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

    … *Le sigh*…

Will need more info before judging, but my instincts aren’t giving me good signs on this one… Oh Ivalice, what have they done to your rich and beautiful history… What have the done…

  • kroufonz

ughh the gameplay isn’t even tactics

  • doubletaco

Square-Enix says they’re shifting their primary focus to mobile and tablets, Square-Enix releases mobile and tablet games of this quality.

I really hope people stop giving them money. I know I have.

  • Shariest

Lately, nearly ever single article saying: “Squeenix has a new game!”
has turned out to be a let-down mobile game made to cash few quick bucks

    • GibbRS

Seems odd to me. I suppose the mobile world is far different in Japan, but does anybody besides Rovio actually make any money on mobile apps?

    • ShadowDivz

I know. I was like “OMG! A TACTICS GAME FOR VITA”
      boom iphone.

      • Uso Ewin

Of all the places to do a “console quality” game on especially for something like a strategy game, you could probably do it on a smartphone. But SE must have a good reason to waste opportunities.

  • “IPhone”
I should have known. Excuse me ill be walking away in shame now.

  • GH56734

I gave up on them since they won’t localize their quality niche RPGs -you know, the ones which made them popular in the first place- : Sigma Harmonics, Blood of Bahamut, SaGa II, SaGa III, Dragon Quest 7 (even though there’s a glimmer of hope with DQ X, which you can’t even play after importing it out of Japan), Terry’s Wonderland, and last but not least, Type-0 and everything on the 3DS barring Bravely Default. I mean really, almost none of their DS offerings outside ff and DQ (and not all of those) were localized. What the hell?
Now the once-stellar Mana, FF, and DQ series are even in Japan reduced to shovelware phony phone apps.

  • ChiffonCake

    >Final Fantasy Tactics
Oh boy, A3?! I really loved A2, so-

Wait, this is a social game, isn’t it…

    >social spinoff
…yeah. Dammit, Square. It’s such a pity too, the art looks really lovely, especially that samurai gria.

  • Pockystix

honestly, there’s a lot that could be said from just lookin at this. . . but I’m just tired of repeating myself from the last thing Square’s been doing to disenfranchise their core audience.

  • Pokahontas McGuigan

    tarnishing FFT

  • Bloodios

    Social… Ugh…

  • gquain

    Guys, let’s go home.
    SOCIAL has won once again

  • Anna Scruton

I’m going back into my hole.

    • Testsubject909

      Is it cozy in there?

  • chibiwall

what is this? where’s my beloved fft? this series is more and more bad… last ffta2 was worst than the gba’s chapter, ffta was just fun for a gameboy, but the real tactics was the first on ps1/psp. It’s a shame

    • Sorry but wha? I don’t remember any of the Ivalice main games being bad.

      • chibiwall

I won’t talk about the graphic, cause I don’t see consistent changes from the first advance despite ds>gba, but I was a lot disappointed when I’ve noticed that the camera was still bind.
FFTA2 it’s slow like the hell, AI spends too much time to complete an action. It has no story, you’re coming to ivalice for no a real reason and your main quest is to do whatever you want for all the game, and when you meet the old guy and you think that the story starts… the game laughs to you and the old guy says exactly to do nothing. And yeah, there’s no boss too, the bue hair lady can’t be called a boss
Special guest, 5 characters in all, but it’s not a real problem

Last thing, judges: in the first game they have a reason to exist, they are the keystone of the story, the rules are fun and you can check them anytime. In ffta2 no, rules are boring and nosense, judges are useless.

        • I’ve still been trying to get that game though, and I kinda heard the story was way different from the first. Also no multiplayer play which gave reason to play the first one more.

  • HPN

Fuck social. To progress whatsoever up a contrived ladder (hamster wheel), you will have to rape your friends list and your wallet both.

  • $39420547

I still hope for A3 for my 3DS i had a lot of fun with the 2 previous games

  • Not much of a t-rpg. It looks like more like a rpg.

  • Aristides

Heyyyy look at the game we’ll never see, so much fun -_-

  • Bunzi

Aah jeez. That musician class looks adorable, too.

Shame we won’t be seeing any more of that great artwork in a real game.

  • Christian Wright

before i clicked the article, i saw air samurai in the synopsis and immediately thought…

    • JustThisOne

Yeaaah, but they don’t need 3D gear. They got wings. *__*

    • Testsubject909

what is that? Sorry but nothing is clicking in my head right now.

      • Christian Wright

shingeki no kyojin (attack on titan) great manga, great anime

  • tha_Chiller

I FUCKIN LOVE FINAL FANTASY TACTICS ADVANCE OST..had to scream that out loud

  • Deadmoonking

An FFT social game? This is NOT the way.

  • Damarius Wingfield

Gonna need some serious GIL for the good stuff!

  • Exkaiser

Air Samurai looks pretty cool. Gria only have four jobs (Though they’re all pretty good) in FFTA2, so it’s nice to see more.

…Still, unless they make an FFTA3 or something, it won’t matter. It looks like this game even has the automatic battles of All the Bravest. Oh well.

  • MitsuiLiam

    Really losing faith in Square
I am almost at the point where I am not going to buy any of their games anymore, and the first Final Fantasy game I am not going to be is the new XIII.
It almost seems as if they WANT to drive away their fanbase that is already there

  • xflame10

Square….quit taunting us and give us A3 already! I want a sequel to my favorite game of all time T_T. Or at least give us tactics 2!

  • Eilanzer

I don´t even care anymore…SE? What is SE?! I just remember squaresoft from my childhood.

    • Rationalise

      Totally agree Elianzer.
The SE now is a souless, money minded(worse than M$), and friggin lost piece of crap company. nothing good comes out of it anymore. It is not for gamers, but for non-gamers, the likes of bored brats and people who doesn’t even know FF was made by Squaresoft.
Screw you, SE. Just screw you.

  • elcido6

I’d rather have a true to form sequel of the playstation version than this “mobage platform” crap. use the same engine from tactics, you don’t even have to write any new code, i don’t care, in fact i’d prefer it, just give me something of what i used to know the franchise to be.

  • Triplicity

Gria still in charge of being adorable as fuck.
