Puzzle & Dragons Z Shares Some Striking Similarities To Pokémon

By Sato . May 28, 2013 . 5:15pm

Puzzle & Dragons Z, the 3DS version of GungHo Online Entertainment’s hit social game, will be seeing more RPG elements added to the game. As previously reported, there will be towns and dungeons to explore. GungHo also introduced male and female protagonists, along with some info on monster evolution.

You’ll have a choice between the male and female Dragon Tamers at the start of Puzzle & Dragons Z. Their goal is to become the Dragon Master by taking on as many dungeons they can, befriending dragons and leveling them up. They also seem to have some sort of device attached on their left arms, which GungHo will be revealing in the near future.

Eggs are one of the rewards you get from finishing battles. They can then be hatched into various types of dragons that also come in different rarities.

In addition to the eggs, you can also get Monster Chips in the form of puzzle pieces, as battle rewards. As shown in the above image, they can be used as synthesis material to power up your dragons.

You can complete the puzzles by meeting the requirements of the type of Monster Chips needed for each monster. Doing so will allow your monster to evolve into a much stronger form. Evolving your Dragons and collecting eggs will play a big role in your Puzzle & Dragons Z adventures. Catch ‘em all to become the Dragon Master!

Puzzle & Dragons Z is slated to be released this Winter in Japan for Nintendo 3DS. GungHo Online Entertainment have plans to release the game in the West as well.

Werewolves are dragons… good to know lol

    • Suicunesol

There are plenty of human-shaped “monsters” as well. A large majority are dragon-types, but there are plenty of monster-girls, angels, Gods and Goddesses, and knights in there too. It’s hardly all dragons.

Didn’t know that I just was going by the title and making an assumption. The different types sound cool though if this comes out here I’ll give it a shot.

      • Yes but this is Puzzle & Dragons Z! A Werewolf is a human that became a dog instead of a sparkly vampire!

    • Renaldi Saputra

we’ve heard before about “dinosaurs are dragon” long time ago
but now werewolves are becoming dragon too

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

The more I see of this, the more I want it. Hopefully we get a localization date in January.

  • Sergio Briceño

If anything I think the characters look more like they came from Yugi-oh with that thing on their arms.

  • lesangpro .

Pokemon trainer , is that you ?

  • Christopher Nunes

Why does the dragon on the top of the article look like a dragon version of Bowser? Or is that just me?

  • Those children character look way too young and…

Pokemon has had the main character aging for the games while these guys are just kids.

    • Suicunesol

“Pokemon has had the main character aging for the games while these are just kids”

…I… don’t think so… I think Pokemon MCs are the same age as every generation, but the style is such that their age can be ambiguously young or older… but still young enough to be kids. They are still kids, man.

    • Renaldi Saputra

pokemon main character aging? every generation, all I heard is: ” 10 years old travelling to become a pokemon master”
I haven’t heard of 12 years old or 14 years old travelling to become pokemon master

  • This looks cool. I wanna see some gameplay =)

  • Christian Wright

i actually like the concept. even though it may be similar to pokemon, they are going with a proven method

  • Renaldi Saputra

so they did use the “tamer” concept beside of “trainer”.. I see

well, releasing it in the west? hmm all I will predict is a lot of ppl saying ” it’s just a cheap pokemon rip-off”
oh I hope that won’t happen
and at least they don’t use something like pokeball to capture monsters in the wild but hatching the egg instead
