Freedom Wars’ Giant Mechanical Dragons Can Kill Players With One Shot

By Sato . May 30, 2013 . 5:00pm

Sony’s recently revealed Freedom Wars will be about participating in battles against giant mechanical enemies called Abductors. Your goal will be to save citizens and allies who’ve been captured by the Abductors, with the help of friends and customizable androids. The game’s official website has been updated with new info on the upcoming cooperative multiplayer game for the PlayStation Vita.

In Freedom Wars, your character will be one of the over 100,000,000 Criminals that live as prisoners in a safe haven, known as the Panopticon, where resources are running low and mankind struggles everyday to find a way to live a better tomorrow.

In this world, there’s an astronomical amount of cameras surveilling the actions all mankind. These men with goggles seem to have some sort of connection with the constant surveillance as authority figures, who are often avoided by the people. It has yet to be revealed what purpose they serve and why they’re constantly avoided.

The Abductors are the giant mechanical beasts in the form of dragons. It is said that there are various types of Abductors, and the Panopticon also have their artificially developed Abductors they use as weapons to fight against them. The Abductors possess a highly destructive force, and can even kill a player with a single blow.

You’ll be in charge of taking down the Abductors using different weapons such as Short Swords, Great Swords, Rifles, Gatling Guns and many more. These weapons can be used to cut and destroy parts off the Abductors, and will also feature their own special attacks with the use of the Thorn Whips. These Thorn Whips are special equipment used by the Criminals for mobility purposes. There are various Thorn Whips that can be upgraded over time with new abilities and strength.

As previously reported, you’ll have an android ally, known as “Accessories”, who’ll be helping you out in your fights. The accessories were created by the people of Panopticon, as a way to watch over the Criminals and will always follow to make sure they abide by the rules.

You’ll be free to customize various Accessories features including their looks, AI and speech. In addition, you’ll be able to trade your customized data with other players. They’ll also be participating in your fights against the Abductors; however, they can also be captured just like anyone else, so you’ll have to keep a close eye on them.

The multiplayer mode will be one of Freedom Wars’ biggest features. It will have cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, boasting a max of 8 players that can play together at a time. The main theme is “Recapture”, where you and other players will be involved in various missions with objectives such as defeat the enemy, save the citizen or allies. There will also be objectives that will require you and your comrades to fully dismantle Abductors prior to defeating them.

Freedom Wars is currently in development and is slated to be released in 2014.

“boasting a max of 8 players that can play together at a time”

    Look out Monster Hunter.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      look out God eater

      • God Eater 2 yea, having seen gameplay for it and not this I’d still prefer God Eater 2. Have to see what this has to offer first, the combat in GE2 is great

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’m ready for some God eating

      • MrTyrant

        Look out everyone! (?)

    • vileBrenman

Wow 8 Players is very impressive! This game is shining brightly

  • Luna Kazemaru

one shot killer bosses oh hell yeah

    • ShadowDivz

      Challenge: Accepted!

    • PreyMantis

This reminds me of that one time where me and three others fought a Jho and all died from just one hit.

      • mike dickson

lol that reminds of the time the soul sacrifice demo was out we try to defeat cerberus we screwed each other over to the point of everyone dying including the boss…….we got a quest failed

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I instantly thought of Joseph Joestar’s Hermit Purple when I saw the thorn whips lol.
Well I hope to see it released outside Japan. Sometimes Sony themselves don’t publish their own games outside Japan.

    • Solomon_Kano

The Panopticon name was trademarked in Europe before the game was even revealed, so I’d bet on us seeing this. We typically don’t miss Japan Studio’s stuff anyway.

      • I just hope they won’t do something silly like, make it local play only ._.

        • Solomon_Kano

I’d think that’s incredibly doubtful with competitive play apparently supporting up to 8 players. Even in Japan, it’d be pretty silly to keep a feature like that restricted to local play. I think the most hunting games typically get up to is like… 4? I believe MH3U had 4-players.

Besides that, Soul Sacrifice had online and Japan Studio was involved in that as well.

          • Well, I’m only saying this ’cause MH3U 3DS restricted no wifi – you have to play it via the Wii U if you want to go online which was silly since it’s portable for a reason :p

Personally that makes little difference though, I have the 3DS version to play on the move but if I try online, the internet here in Britain begs to differ. It’s just that, some people might want to play online while on the move, so you never know!

Also, me and a friend now can’t play it anymore, since he only has the 3DS and no Wii U (he left the country now that exams are over and he graduated), so now I’m only solo-ing in MH3U….

Similar in GEB, only local play. You -could- play online using some tool from the PSN, but I think you have to do it via the PS3 or so – it never worked for me since apparently this technique stopped working after a certain patch was released.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, that’s why I’m probably gonna stick to the Wii U version of MH3U whenever I get one lol.

I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that here though. Thus far all the hunting games on Vita have online play. Actually, Lord of Apocalypse might not, but that’d be the only one.

          • :P Feel free to let me know if you want to try playing with me when you have the game and console man, though the internet connection would be poor across seas…

            I see. Well, here’s hoping anyway. Fingers crossed it will be nice to us. ^^;

          • Solomon_Kano

            Will do, will do.

    • vileBrenman

Wow i can’t Believe I didn’t make the connection at first but yeah it is like Hermit Purple.

  • Greg

It’s games like these that make me wish I had money for a Vita right now.

    • Highasthesky

It’s games like these, that make me glad i bought both a Vita and a 3DS :D

      • mike dickson

likewise i saying buying both handhelds is the best move this year so much vita 3ds goodness

        • Magicks

          Working on it. @[email protected]

Yeah, I really like the idea of owning both the handhelds because there are just so many good games that come out on each of the systems.

          • mike dickson

i khow right this year is handheld friendly

  • Martian Wong

One question, will you be able to make you own character for the multiplayer mode? Otherwise it would be silly to have everyone look the same…

  • neogeno

I wonder if the trading of accessories similar to the pawn system in Dragons Dogma.

  • The abductors sound like the epic boss in an MMO you can’t kill until you’re maxed out or maybe they’ll keep them almighty who knows

  • Solomon_Kano

This has to be the most visually impressive Vita game around. It doesn’t look exactly like that trailer, no, but it’s pretty damn close.

    • sherimae1324

yes that cel-shade graphics is very pleasing to the eyes
do you think gravity rush 2 will have graphics like this or will stay the same?

if its stay the same i hope the world is much bigger, has dungeons, can speak to any npcs, can be customized,
      and more enemy varieties

      • Solomon_Kano

I think it’ll stay the same. I hope it’ll stay the same anyway. I really liked Gravity Rush’s look. I’m sure if they do a sequel it’ll be bigger though.

        • Testsubject909

          THEY BETTER!

Edit: Make a sequel that is. I just want to see more Gravity Rush.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    The Accessories are like Chi and Motoko combined. Who said that’s a bad thing. :}

  • sandra10

I really want to see the red thorny thing in action. It could be a neat blend between the traversal mechanics of Gravity Rush and the boss climbing in Shadows if we could it use it on more than just the enemies.

  • JustThisOne

…they can also be captured just like anyone else, so you’ll have to keep a close eye on them.

Uhh, hopefully, this won’t become a huge thing. :V This won’t get all escort missiony, will it?

Either way, I love one shot killer bosses! More on the line, right? :3

    • ShadowDivz

I don’t think so. You should see me with my Pawn in Dragon’s Dogma.
I put her life ahead of my own.

  • Bloodios

Hmm… it would be wonderful if Saitama (from One-Punch Man) is included as a guest boss.

    • TheExile285

He could be the optional superboss. That would be so great.

    • Gekokujou

While they’re at it, you should get a trophy if you somehow manage to survive one of his punches.

      • hybrid897

I don’t think its nice to put unobtainable trophies in games :(

    • Ramengeddon

He better be holding a bag of discounted groceries

      • Bloodios

I would prefer that if the party is wiped out, he would start shouting: “Crap! I forgot today is the special sale day!” And if the party is able to successfully reduce his health to zero, he would put on “the face” and start saying: “Gotta go, guys. Today is the special sale day, you know” and take off. That would be very like him, don’t you think?

        • Ramengeddon

This is true but its also very like him to happen upon a fight after shopping and i thought it would be funny to have the bag as a breakable part and spill the contents when broken and then making saitama go into rage mode

    • Folk Hellfang

So is he the guy the line, “Saitama, Saitama, F. O. E.!” Comes from?

  • Jesse Torres

Geez, i want a vita so bad, i have the money for it but sony has not release a red vita in the u.s, i even have dreams about it.

  • TheExile285

This game is sounding better and better.

I hope this comes out early 2014

    • I would assume the release date is likely for Japan’s release only though. but that would speed things up for us too :)

  • rurin

I’m really wondering if, besides the “Accessories,” the main character can also be customized….

    • Would be surprised if they couldn’t be, that’s normally an automatic feature for hunting games

    • It would be a confusing multiplayer mode if you couldn’t, so I’m guessing yes.

  • Curan_Altea

This game….. It cam eout of nowhere and it sounds amazing. Really want to see how the thorn mechanics work out, as I love the idea of grappling around while fighting huge monsters.

And 8 players is awesome. No one will have to split off into toher groups when we get together to play.

    • sherimae1324

hey i know that avatar! thats a very very naughty girl ^_^

anyways im hyped for this game!

    • ShadowDivz

      *cough attack on titans*
Im so looking forward to this gmae.

  • If this is as good as the combat in Soul Sacrifice I’m preemptively super excited

  • MrTyrant

If you create an android waifu do you have an ending with her? because Dragon Dogma sucked in that way, there was not pawn ending (your created companion) but you could pair your main character with any npc lol

  • psycho_bandaid

I will troll my accessory so hard during this game. Break all the rules you want and if she gets annoying you can just let her get eaten by a dragon.

    • Testsubject909

Troll her hard, make her A.I. a Tsundere.

Be forever confused if she hates you for trolling her or likes you for trolling her.

  • Steven Z

Nice! Sounds like my kind of game :D Huge MH fan over here.

  • Gah they just keep dangling this beautiful game in front of me! :D

  • ShadowDivz

I am so hyped for this game. I can’t wait to have a Robo waifu.
Dragon’s Dogma gives you a pawn who is… well, to quote the drake: “hollow shell in the form of man”.

i love when games let you customize your “right hand man”like this and Dragon’s Dogma. Instead of just giving you some jackass who makes all the decisions and you just say yes or no.

    • MrTyrant

That with actual personalities/voices + scripted dialogues it’s great. Would love more of that in the future.

      • ShadowDivz

Yeah that too. It’s kinda funny because in Dragon’s Dogma almost all the pawns i got from online had the same voice and personality.
Meaning my Roselia is actually original.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

This is sounding pretty beastly! Über strong bosses! Customisable android helpers! Multitude of weapon choices! Co-op and competitive multiplayer!

Sign me the F’ up, Japan Studio/Sony! My Vita awaits your arrival!

    • ShadowDivz

      robo waifu*

  • Namuro

I saw a picture of the Accessory’s profile on another site, where it says “Accessory (Female)”. This may indicate that there’ll be a male version available as well…Not that I want one LOL.

When the game was first announced, a lot of people seemed mad over the Accessory’s inclusion, seeing her as being another cliché fan service. But it looks like the reception’s getting better, for some reason. That’s good anyway, you can never have too many robot babes in my opinion.

    • ShadowDivz

A male versoin wouldn’t be too bad. He would be your bro.
Brothers in arms. Although im going the waifu route myself.

And for me. right hand man/assitant fanservice is always welcome.

    • new_tradition

Yesssssss. I’ll be able to make my huzbando then ♥

  • Never leave home without great Accessories lol

  • Takui Nanao

this game remind me of S4league, i cant wait for this game i mean graphics are awesome , game play is sick, plus 8 people playing together should be amazing

  • Can’t wait for this game! This is going to be epic! 2014! Come faster! Hopefully, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace and Phantasy Star Online 2 will be enough to entertain me until this comes out.

  • Kioku

    One thing is for sure…

  • This looks and sounds so awesome!

Day 1 buy it seems like!

  • Testsubject909

So who was it again that wanted a Tsun A.I?

“I-I’m only following you because I need to make sure you abide by the rules! I don’t care if you live or die…

Or something along those lines huh?

Though on a more serious note… I’m loving the looks of this game and anxiously await it’s localization release date…

Oh please localize the hell out of this game.

    • Tsun A.I <3

    • vileBrenman

      Ohhh yeaah Tsundere unit goooooo!

    • MrTyrant

Yandere A.I. to be always jealous but at the same time destroy all the enemies for my sake.

    • ShadowDivz

Robo-waifu:”St-stop hugging me you idiot, im just a robot…..”
      Robo-waifu: “….”
      *hugs back*

    • Kitestwinblades

Wait, we basically get our very own Persocoms? and they fight?
Hold on, let me go get my wallet…

  • Sentsuizan_93

Damn. Now I really want to see some gameplay. I’m getting more and more interested.

    • Colonel Custard

I really hope those whips can make the players move quickly or that will be a little bit of a let down.

      • Ferrick

i think that’s the point of those grappling whips, because i doubt that they will use it as a melee weapon (you have a blade for that already)

        • Colonel Custard

Well it does say its used for mobility but, that is a vague term. I mean more specifically in terms of player speed cause many games of this type have slow moving players so if whips can be used to pull players from location to location that would be amazing.

          • ShadowDivz

Do you mean like Lost Planet? Because that was pretty fun to use.

          • Colonel Custard

Yep so something like that cause grappling everywhere made things faster.

          • ShadowDivz

It actually got me killed a few times, because i would just grapple everythin and be all like “MAN IM SO AWESOME LOLOLOL” *dead*
But yeah, that would be fun.

          • Ferrick

that would be awesome if it is true, and i would use all that heavy weapons >=P

  • Damarius Wingfield

    Time to destroy gentleman.

  • chibiwall

8 players and competitive mode? I’m sold

  • The more I see/read the more I want.

  • VeniVidiVici

Man, the Vita’s getting a really awesome selection of new releases this year. Which is good. The Vita needs some kickstart in sales.

  • VeniVidiVici

I look forward to having my very own Robo-Husbando (Which had better be included, given you can choose your own character’s gender)

If not…..well, then I guess me and my Androgynous Robo-Waifu will be running away to whatever Panopticon has legalized gay marriage.

But I’ll be hoping for the Robo-D

  • Valtiel Ikari

I want this game, like now, maybe I will finally get a vita next month, which me luck!

  • Guest

sounds good but just like monhun I think there will still be tons of solo players who are drown to this game
