Senran Kagura Burst Busts Past 100,000 Units Sold

By Spencer . May 31, 2013 . 2:03am

kagurabSenran Kagura series producer Kenichiro Takaki tweeted that Senran Kagura Burst has been on sale for 37 weeks in Japan and the retail release broke past the 100,000 units sales mark on its own. Takaki thanked fans for their support.

Senran Kagura Burst left Japan earlier this year and entered the South Korean market via an eShop only digital release. What’s interesting about that is Marvelous AQL bothered to make an English logo for Senran Kagura Burst while the game was left in Japanese.

Is there info on digital downloads?

    • d19xx

I always assume it’s about or below 10% of retail copies sold…

      • malek86

I think that percentage is slowly increasing. In the case of Fire Emblem, it was actually around 35%, but FEA was restricted by shipment problems. Similar deal for Animal Crossing. Not sure about other games, but this said, I doubt it’s still any more than 15%.

        • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

Japanese people trust digital distribution systems a whole lot less than Western people. Especially on the 3DS without any kind of reasonable account system.

          • I dunno about that. Over 700,000 download copies sold of Animal Crossing says they don’t care about account systems.

          • ( `Д´)ノ)`ν゜)

That limited edition AC 3DS LL came with the game preinstalled. Are you sure they didn’t factor those copies into those 700,000?

          • Even if they did, the limited edition was just that… a limited edition. The game is probably easily close to about 800,000 download copies sold since their last report. The LE is a tiny portion of that number.

          • malek86

I think AC had (or is still having?) similar shipment problems as FEA.

          • It did for a while, because they needed to manufacture a special kind of cartridge for it. It isn’t having them any more, to my knowledge, though.

    • British_Otaku

If I recall correctly, the digital version released long after the physical version which should be cheaper due a number of second hand copies being on the market and a long time on the market.

Digital Burst costs 5980 yen currently and was released on 10th January 2013. Physical Burst likely costs less than that (which is full price anyway) and released 30th August 2012.

It’s pretty safe to say that physical sales outside of Korea (digital release there recently) should be pretty small.

  • Colin Tosh

It would sell even more if you brought it to the west :)

  • So Shinobi Versus sold more than 37 weeks of SKB… in 3 days! Vita FTW :)

    • Kevadu

Well, it’s a better game. And it had extra hype from the anime.

      • Zonic505

& the added addition of the fact the Vita got a price drop that same week as well.

      • noctis_nox

Yeah! but 3DS has a massive install base. :-P

        • psycho_bandaid

these games have massive… I’m not going to finish that sentence.

          • Massive… band-aids? :3

          • Sergio Briceño

Massive 2D shinobi action? And I do mean cup size.

        • Kefkiroth

Install base isn’t everything (though it does help), it’s more about the audience on the platform.

    • Herok♞

Well you have remember a few things like it came the week of price drop where all vita games were selling like crazy, it had a built in audience because their were already incredibly niche games on it, the anime helped sales because of product recognition, it has less competition on Vita since their are less musou games & beat em ups, also it seems to me people like musou games more on top of that, importers could finally try out the series and it was the first SK on Vita so you have more people trying it out because those system owners haven’t learned if they like it or not yet. So there was that perfect storm for Shinobi Versus, and you have to consider Burst did sell 70,000 units in its first week which isn’t that bad to begin with, Its really easy to see where the extra units came from. Personally I won’t say which is better gameplay wise because I haven’t played either and some people prefer sidescrollers while others prefer musou games.

      • ShadowDivz

Are those what they call the wind of fortune?
It’s like the planets alligned to get that game off the ground.

Im gonna see if they have Versus at my anime convention this summer and if not then i will end up porting it.

And if by some impossible dumb luck, it gets localized i will buy it again.

        • Herok♞

I can see burst getting localized but not versus because of the extent of the fan service, because even if the game might not be that bad it could destroy a companies rep because of stupid politicians and overreacting parents

          • ShadowDivz

Mainly overreacting parents. And that chick who feels she speaks for women everywhere. Ugh, i don’t remember her name. But she has this blog “denouncing” everything SHE finds sexist in games.

          • mike dickson

oh i saw that blog page that chick is really sexist she needs to keep her mouth shut for this game to get localized imo

          • M’iau M’iaut

@ShadowDivz:disqus folks, this article is not about Anita. Please keep things on topic.

          • ShadowDivz

Sorry. Thank you though, that is her name.

Miaux2(can i spell ur name like that) Do you think SK could actually make outside japan?
I think it has a small chance. But won’t actually make it.

          • Herok♞

I am not going to mention her because she will disappear faster if she is ignored.

          • ShadowDivz

Oh Herok. How we all wished that was true.

          • Herok♞

What I don’t get is why someone who dislike me for saying that because that would means she has defenders even here O.o

          • M’iau M’iaut

As has been discussed, in business ‘rep’ is a powerful thing, regardless of who is stupid or overreacting.

          • mike dickson

sorry guys didn’t mean to bring anita in this topic

          • Herok♞

I understand, thats why I made the comment

          • J_Joestar

it would be more of an issue for a major publisher like Nintendo to bring a game like this over, but for a company that caters exclusively to a niche crowd, it should hardly be an issue as they typically are all young to middle aged japanophiles who buy their own games.

  • Damarius Wingfield

Let the madness(with a touch of ecchi) continue!

  • h2foxo

Burst & VS have both sold over 100K copies come on publishers.

    • TheExile285

Yes, I want me some SV

  • Yeah I bet it did.

  • drproton

    “Busts Past”, hehe

Thanks for keeping us abreast of the situation.

    • Alicemagic

Is that the breast you can do?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    -_-…… yay…..

    • You no like bursting busts lol?

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        I just want to play it ;_;

  • English logo huh? So that means it may be bouncing over to N.A. soon…….. awesome! =^_^=

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      Hah, hardly.

    • ParaChomp

Cartoon adaptation? Yes. Game? No news so far.

  • Aristides

Xseed should hurry up and localize the damn thing -_- everyone is waiting, it’s not funny anymore, this game has been out for a while now…

    • If Dragon’s Crown is getting attacked from left and right for its sexism imagine this game.

      • Aristides

The media really is setting the game industry back a couple of years -_-. *sigh*

      • Alicemagic

Ain’t no such thing as bad publicity. For every feminist that writes an angry column about Dragon’s Crown, there are five unassuming straight gamers that discover it and are willing to buy 5 copies.

        The circle of tits.

  • Based Prince Vegeta #BADMAN

Well of course Boobs sell…. these virgins need something to play…

  • They all have very large… Assets. I’m gonna have to pass because athletic tomboys with realistic proportions and short hair are the best!

  • alixraen

Lo and behold, the power of boobies.

  • phangtom

If only the 3DS wasn’t region locked… Wonder if it would’ve made a difference since this series does have quite a vocal community behind in outside of Japan.

    • h2foxo

      Senran International Academy

  • Kamakuma

If this makes it in the US without a censor… I will cut my hair. v..v And it’s already growing wildly but I will hold off until a release date is said and done. (Yes had to add the no censor part because I wanna keep my hair a bit longer. >…>)

  • Nirun Rangraengjit

Great, now bounce it on over to American shores.
