Chain Blaster Is Like The Every Extend Extra Of Bullet Hell Shooters

By Spencer . June 4, 2013 . 10:39pm

Chain Blaster from G-Style looks and sounds pretty neat. It’s a vertical shoot ‘em and your ship fires chain blasts. When this detonates all connected enemy ships in a formation blow up. It’s kind of like the chaining mechanic in Every Extend Extra, but in Chain Blaster you have to weave through a screen full of bullets. When things get out of control you can use Overdrive to go into slow motion.

Chain Blaster keeps track of the best virus cleaners through its online leader boards. The game has two ships—Sagittarius and, for advanced players, Orion. Chain Blaster comes out next week for Nintendo 3DS as a 700 yen ($7) eShop download.

Looks interesting. Though the question now is variety of stages, enemies and gameplay length.

If this comes out here (it better!) I’m buying it day 1.

So it’s a mix between Twinkle Star and Every Extend. I kinda like both of those, so I wonder if it will be localized at some point.

    What a cool-looking game!
The chain destruction mechanic looks interesting, and there seems to be a certain amount of challenge.
The music is nice, by the way!

Chain Blaster also reminds me of Metal Torrent, a great DsiWare shoot’em up which is also very minimalistic in its options (main game/config/rankings) and has the same focus on scoring, maybe at the expense of a cohesive and fully developed background with specific sceneries.

Anyway, I would get it as soon as it comes on the PAL eShop, along with Recca. =)

There are not a lot of shmups on the 3DS (A few DS ones such as Ketsui Death Label or the ones in the G.G Series Collection +) and a few DsiWares (Metal Torrent, and others that were unfortunately Japan-only…) so any of these games are worth a look. It is surprising that there are not more of these, though. It is definitely a genre that isn’t incompatible with portable gaming.

hmm reminds me of galaga legions as well… looks good tho, i need a good shmup for the 3ds – did kokuga ever come out?

    • Julien_N

All we have for Western versions of Kokuga is an German rating and judging by the publisher, it seems it will be a download-only release. But we don’t even have a release date yet, so I would stay cautious and wait a bit.

EDIT : Oh, and there are Metal Torrent and Dark Spirits on the DsiWare. The first one is a scoring-focused shoot’em up by Arika, who adapted Ketsui for the DS, the latter is a budget shmup with a gothic style and options that are powered-up independentely and have three option formations (you can shoot forward or backwards Ă  la Deathsmiles)
