New Shin Megami Tensei IV DLC Has Players Clip The Wings Off Archangels

By Spencer . June 6, 2013 . 11:54pm

image Most of the Shin Megami Tensei IV downloadable content has been bonus missions that make leveling up easier. The third wave of DLC includes a costume set to dress the protagonist as Asmodeus and Breaking the Archangel Wings 1.

This mission has players fight the four archangels, but only two of them are in the mission. You will need a powerful party to defeat Uriel (left) and Raphael (right). Defeat the two archangels and you can add them to your party through fusion. Breaking the Archangel Wings 1 costs 250 yen and the Demon Skin costume pack is 200 yen. Breaking the Archangel Wings 2 is scheduled to come out next week. Here’s a look at Asmodeus.

Asmodeus costume huh? Hmm thats cool. Wondering what it looks like though. Lots of red and rings I gues.

I want the mc get an outfit based on Jack Frost. I will pay for that hee ho!

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

Well, hot damn! Asmodeus got the best demonic look I’ve seen lately.

    • http://wiredjungle.wordpress.com/ DrakosAmatras

It was reported a while back that he(?) was designed by Tokusatsu (although less Godzilla and more Super Sentai/Kamen Rider) monster designers, so that’s probably why.

      • Armane

Asmodeus was designed by Yasushi Nirasawa; who has designed monsters for Godzilla, Sentai, and Kamen Rider, although mainly the latter.

  • ChaosExTheory

That costume looks sweeeeeet! Here’s hoping that they’ll release it in Europe, too. I’ll be all over that one :P

    • Tom_Phoenix

I just wish we would actually GET some info on the European release. Not that I’m complaining, since I’m grateful the game will be released in Europe to begin with. But still, summer has started, yet we still don’t have an exact release date and we still don’t know whether or not we will be getting the first print edition that NA is getting.

Heck, there isn’t even any clear information as to WHO the European publisher actually is! It’s probably either Nintendo or NISA, but so far, neither have outright stated that to be the case (and there is nothing on their respective websites about the game either).

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Oh good, Atlus are now nickel-and-diming us to fight classic series enemies.

What was that the Atlus staff said last month, about this being a “punk production”?

    • DyLaN

And yet no one complains abt the past character DLC in FE:A.

      • MrTyrant

No one complain? about those characters? why would they? those are just crossover character and the only thing to complain about are they look like a generic unit.

Normally any Fire Emblem don’t have the character of older entries. NOW with SMT is very different because those demons were shown in the trailers in fact, the archangel are classic in SMT mainline and you always fight them. This will be the first time they are dlc.

        • DyLaN

          >Normally any Fire Emblem don’t have the character of older entries.them, but in here they are bonuses.
What about Anna? Tiki counts too technically.

Again, they are bonuses the same way the DLC are in FE:A. Putting aside ATLUS charging the bonus battle, at the very least this is genuine bonus stuff not on-disc DLC.

          • MrTyrant

Tiki and Ana are bad examples, it seems you didn’t understand.

The angels were remove it from what I know. The angels appear in one of the first trailer but they decided to leave them as DLC instead of the normal game. I don’t like it, challenging bosses are part of SMT charm, secret angel and demons were part of that as well and It was fun like when you unlock a character from a fighting game by meeting some criterias instead of paying dlc.

          • DyLaN

You know what? Let just agree tht we disagree with each other and leave it at tht.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

I came here to write exactly this. A gold star for MrTyrant. This is especially jarring because of how much they’ve been showing off the re-designed archangels in press releases since last August.

          • Philip Elthorpe

Atlus have fallen into the same trap as Capcom. Fire Emblem Awakening – 90% of the bonus characters are FREE, just needing Spotpass. Tekken Tag 2 – The characters ARE Free.

Both Atlus, with SMT4, and Capcom, with SFxT, showed off stuff… then asked for the extra money.

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Remember how proud they were that Catherine was a “complete production” with no paid DLC planned?

I had a feeling this would happen eventually, but I do feel disappointed as SMT has been very near and dear to my heart since the 90s.

          • MrTyrant

The free character are plot related, they could have been in the main game but good thing that they were free. The other paid dlc were all the character from previous games + new classes + new events related to children path, comic relief dialogues and post marriage (ONLY FOUR FREAKING CHARACTERS! four children or four adults)

Yeah most of those shouldn’t be dlc. Specially post marriage topic because it’s a feat that I always wanted in my FE games and because I paid I complain that they were too little.

          • Philip Elthorpe

            MrTyrant, You are DEAD WRONG.

The Children, as playable units, are semi-automatically unlockable once you get past Chapter 12 in special side-missions.

Over a hundred characters from previous games are in the Wireless menu’s Bonus Box if you just update it weekly.

And none of that is paid DLC. Yes, about a dozen missions are paid content, but you can get all the characters in them for NOTHING.

          • MrTyrant

“New event related to children path”

I was talking about the dlc where you see how they fight in their own world and time. That’s a dlc remember? i have fire emblem and most of those dlc.
Intelligent system claims that his Fire Emblem is more plot and character driven game. Those dialogues and event should have been in the game instead of dlc.
Well the game is still great and thinking in how Fire Emblem: A was more of an experiment trowing all kind of ideas I think the next game would fix most of this.

  • Zharkiel

Back in the day, Ultimate bosses used to be free…

  • Sardorim

So basically they’re trying to mimic what was done for the FE:A DLC stuff.

    • Ferofax

Not necessarily a bad thing. We are getting *bonuses* as DLC, not stuff we’d usually think that should have been in the game in the first place.

      • Sardorim

Never said it was since I bought all the FE:A DLC. >_>

      • Tiredman

Hmm, old school demons as dlc isn’t a bonus, its a chop and sell. They chopped content that would normally be in the game if dlc wasn’t a thing, and now they are selling it back to us. If it was totally new demons, I would have less of an issue with this.

        • Ferofax

Hah, you speak as if these old school demons are crucial and gamebreaking.

They’re just demons, same as the others. Hell, weaker than some high tier demons in-game, IIRC. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. Nobody’s shoving it in your face, man.

          • Tiredman

I know demons don’t make or break, but doesn’t matter. Chop and sell is chop and sell. I don’t mind dlc to help level, to help raise cash, extra costumes, hairstyles, voices, and so on, but when demons are the games bread and butter, that should not be messed with in my opinion.

          • Ferofax

Ah, well, seems you’ve pretty much decided this sucks for you, so… I guess that’s that.

As for me, I’ll be enjoying it.

          • Tiredman

Ill enjoy it too. Will still bitch about shitty practices though. Just won’t mess with the dlc I find offensive.

  • Shane Guidaboni

What did they do to Kaneko’s classic designs? Uriel and Raphael used to look way cooler.

    • MrTyrant

I never linked the archangels myself, except the sexy normal angel. Metatron is amazing.

    • DyLaN

The new designs look more visually distinct/impressive compare to their old designs.

      • Shane Guidaboni

I’m more disappointed that they don’t actually look like angels anymore. This design looks more revered, and holy. Now they just look like monsters. http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080706044710/megamitensei/images/c/c8/UrielSMT.jpg

      • Adam Primaeros

Kaneko would still do a more interesting job updating his own “people with wings” designs.
Check out Gabriel as she was in Persona 2: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090422080244/megamitensei/images/2/26/GabrielP2EP.jpg

        • DyLaN

          No offense, but I still prefer the SMTIV design. It looks like a person in a organ cosplay to me ^^;

          • MrTyrant

SMT IV demons are copy pasted of those from Kamen Raider, they don’t really look that unique. Kaneko’s can do a better job, all personas looks humanoid because they are used for humans and they within them. That’s Ellen persona.

          • DyLaN

            >Shit taste
You lost me on the first sentence ady.

          • MrTyrant

            That’s how normally it is.

          • Shane Guidaboni

There’s something more elegant about Kaneko’s design for me, where as these new ones feel like they’re leftovers from a Power Rangers episode, but I can see why people would like these new designs more. Everyone has different tastes :)

          • Adam Primaeros

None taken, it’s a discussion, and I’m putting forward my point(s).

  • vileBrenman

I like how they made the angels more disfigured because in ancient mythology they look more terrifying not divine like Renaissance or modern images of angels

    • http://www.fogalchemist.com/ caleb1993

It is terrifyingly impressive. I too am pleased with the design choice that they’ve made.

  • Tom_Phoenix

Extra costumes as DLC, great. Powerleveling dungeons as DLC….kind of disturbing, but since it is kept outside the core game itself, easy to deal with.

Optional bosses as DLC….now that’s where I start to feel iffy about all this. =/

  • DyLaN

Is that a… crotch *mouth on Uriel you-know-what? New design > old design for me.

  • Ramón Navas

So… You don’t fight the 4 archangels in the main game?

    • MrTyrant

Well now I know. You don’t fight the archangels.

  • Rini11

I hope Europe gets SMT IV soon

  • MrTyrant

I gathered a little of information: The Archangels aren’t the game, they got cut off and will be selled as DLC (do not like the sound of this) I hope they don’t do this anymore.

Now this is how the asmodeus costume looks like: http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/6478/img0737resize.jpg

    • DyLaN

      Looking chaos-ty there, Flynn/MC.

    • Shane Guidaboni

I would actually prefer if this is how the original demon design looked.

      • Adam Primaeros

Maybe there’s a problem with the line-art instead? It looks really busy.

  • Metalsnakezero

I see no harm in this being DLC. Besides, I willing to give more money to Atlus than any other company.

    • Tiredman

I would feel the same, but this is just how it starts. They do it in this game, they will find they can get away with it, and future games start removing more things that used to be a given with their games. I am rather annoyed by this myself.

      • Metalsnakezero

Well then it our job to spend money on DLC that works.

        • Philip Elthorpe

Capcom recently have been given a lot of shit for removing stuff wholesale from games to make their money twice and now Atlus are doing it too.

“Look at our new design for Asmodeus and the Archangels… Only $3.99 each three or four months down the line.”

  • ndjn3979

Favorite demon designs among SMT games yet. Tho Angels could look more…angelic.

  • Eefara

It’s a little late now, but I have to say that I’m not a fan of the new designs. These angels look like generic evil, demons or something. They’re just so…bland. Sure, the design itself is detailed enough, but if you show that to anyone, the first thing that comes to mind is not “angel”.

    • MrTyrant

I would say they look different, not bad. Kaneko based his design in how religious people see those angels and this new design are related to how they were described in the some mitologies.

I like Asmodeus myself I think it’s one of the best new ones.

  • JustThisOne

    Things are looking pretty metal.

  • Solomon_Kano

    Asmodeus looks siiiiick.

  • Adam Primaeros

    *the four archangels descend majestically*

“Okay, bye, see you in the DLC!”
    Don’t I get to fight-
    “DLC!”
