Kingdom Hearts 3 Being Developed By Square Enix’s Osaka Studio

By Ishaan . June 11, 2013 . 10:04am

Kingdom Hearts 3 isn’t being worked on by the original Kingdom Hearts team. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura himself is busy on Final Fantasy XV.

Instead, Kingdom Hearts 3 is being developed by Square Enix’s Osaka studio, the publisher revealed this morning at a Q&A. The Osaka studio worked on Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and are also working on Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix.

Square Enix also confirmed that, like Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3 makes use of Direct X 11.

I’m happy about this BBS was my favourite alongside KH2. KH3D felt a bit awkward at times with the flowmotion controls but if they can get it right in KH3 I’m sure it will be great.

    • Joshua

BBS my favorite in series too, but KH3D not so much. Hopefully the fact that this is meant to be played with a console controller will ease our worries?

    • SoundMatch

Shoot I accidentally down voted but I took it back. Sorry. Also I wanna see the shoot lock system return in some form. That thing was so fun.

    • Terarded

i liked bbs but i had absolutely no replay value to it with the way it was made. i like to play through the entire series altogether and birth by sleep i just cant do that with because it requires me to kind of play through the story 3 times.

  • TheExile285

I liked BBS but I’m not sure how I feel about Normura not being involved as much as he usually is.

    • Joshua

Nomura co-directed both of the original KH games that the Osaka team is responsible for – Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance. I’m sure he’ll have a similar level of involvement for this and we’ll have nothing to worry about.

    • Anime10121

He’ll be as involved as he was with both BBS and DDD, probably even more so, since he wanted this title to be perfect!

  • Pfantzypantz

Sora better get an Osaka accent

  • DesmaX

… I just can’t get into Birth by Sleep, for some reason.

Maybe it’s that PSP analog stick… It’s heavy, makes my finger tired (And it’s hard to defend). Or maybe the enemies just take too long to beat (Or maybe I’m underleveled?)… I dunno.

    Still hyped, anyway

    • cloudcaelum

Just play it, best spin-off ever seen. (Crisis Core second)

      • DesmaX

        I do have the game

    • neocatzon

Well, the secret boss broke my analog :/ I think BBS’ control is good enough for psp. Maybe underleveled, how far you’re into the game?

      • DesmaX

        Deep Space, Terra lv 15.

        Is this good enough

        • neocatzon

Terra is the slowest one, He’s usually stay on the ground. Maybe try another character first, like Ventus he’s much faster than Sora and Roxas. To fully enjoy Terra.. 15 isn’t enough. Playing him is like playing someone from drakengard

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha oh my god your last line. I didn’t even realize how true it was until you pointed it out.

That being said he’s still more fun than Caim ever was. Slow, oh yes. But way more fun, if only because his game is prettier.

    • Joshua

Well if you can’t get yourself to finish the game due to gameplay, you should still try to catch yourself up on the plot. This game single handedly fills in most of the backstory necessary to understanding why these games are referred to as The Xehanort Saga.

  • I haven’t played BBS. I don’t own a PSP unfortunately, but I anticipate they’ll be including it in their next HD collection. Though I have played a bit of Dream Drop Distance and I’m not into it as much as the PS2 games. The drop mechanic and controls kind of break me away from it, but maybe the next game will feel better on the consoles for me.

    • TogetherLemon

I blame the controls. BBS was awesome, but I hated using the PSP. Same for 3D. Only thing I hope for is 1) The magic system will work similar to KH2, not like BBS or 3D, and 2) You will actually be able to do combos against bosses, which was practically impossible on the harder bosses in both BBS and 3D.

  • Anime10121

Yes Yes ALL OF MY LDGHKNEONF opj;s YES!!!

Enjoyed those entries more than the originals! The originals may have had better flowing Disney plot, but DAT GAMEPLAY!!! And Nomura always manages to make sure the main KH story is told through all the titles. :D

  • new_tradition

Does that mean we might see KH3 and FFXV released not too far from each other?

I’m assuming the Osaka team is probably doing the hypothetical 2.5 ReMIX game, though I remember reading 1.5 only had a handful of staff on the project, so maybe after they finish that they can use everyone on the KH3 project?

    • Solomon_Kano

Probably not. I’d imagine KH3 is in the early stages of development, given how brief the trailer was.

Also, I don’t know if this is true, but I remember seeing somewhere that 1.5 had less than 10 people working on it, so I think 3 will progress fine without that staff.

  • Maumac77

Wonder if this will affect the flow of the story at all, though I highly doubt it. However knowing this means development won’t be slowed down by FF XV, which also means we may get to see it before 2015?

  • DragonSix

BBS was great, easily as good as KH2, so I trust the series is in good hands.

    • fayt255

I really liked BBS too so this is good news!

  • Joshua Myers

Heres to hoping they dont ruin it

    • Ferrick

they did great on BBS and 3DDD, so chances are, this will be as good or even better

  • Rishtopher

“The Osaka studio worked on Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 3D”

Ok, so this pretty much guarantees that I’ll like how it plays. Awesome news!

  • Diomedes Daemonslayer

    1080p glory of the trailer

The gameplay at the end looks incredible.

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Are you fucking kidding me?! The creator would rather spend his energy on a different property than be concerned about the state of his own creation! He better finish FF XV very fast and get on to helping the Osaka team with KH III so that it is no more and no less epic than FF XV-Nomura must dedicate all his resources to both games and not let Kingdom Hearts go down like this. KH 3D is technically a spin off so even though they have experience working on the franchise, the numbered titles should be handled by its creator and left to people without years of experience with it. I liked KH 3D so hopefully they don’t fail. Getting 1.5 HD remix though so that better be good too!

    • Solomon_Kano

Nomura has directed every single KH game, despite his continued work on Versus, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about when you say “rather spend his energy on a different property”. He’ll still be directing this, most likely.

It’s just that the Tokyo team won’t be developing. The Osaka team — who’ve been handling KH forever now — are essentially the real vanguards of this franchise, as Tokyo only did KH1 and KH2. Nomura has been directing while other teams handled the actual development of the game since Chain of Memories.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Oh I thought he was leaving it in their hands entirely. My bad. Just that usuallywhen developers say they r letting another developer handle their game they may not have a pivotal role in its direction. But thanks for clearing that up.. I can rest easy now that I know Nomura is heading both projects and keeping both to his vision. When do u think KH III will come since FF XV won’t be coming before 2014?

        • Solomon_Kano

It’s cool, man. From the looks of the comments you aren’t the only person who didn’t know that.

As for when KH3 will come… I think Fall 2015 would be realistic. Once Nomura’s done with XV, Tokyo may even contribute to the development of KH3, so that’d help.

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Hopefully KH3’s development will work out that way.

  • Solomon_Kano

YES! I knew Nomura would give 3 to Osaka! I so called that. Glad to see they finally get to bring it on home.

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha yeaah. Not surprised this happened. After Nomuras main team has oh so agonizingly long been tied up with XVersus, which is what I’m calling it now, I figured that at some point he’d either accept that KH3 would be REALLY damn late, or just fold and give it to the Osaka team. They’ve been the ones keeping the series alive anyway, so I think they deserve a shot at the big-time limelight anyway.

  • Terarded

not to happy about it being developed by a different team.. i mean its good that we get it earlier but i dont want it to lose any of the awesomeness that created the first 2 (and birth by sleep and dream drop distance just wernt the same)

i guess nomura just got sick of everyone complaining about how long it was taking lol

  • artemisthemp

I wouldn’t be surprised, if KH3 first sees a releases after 2.5 HD
