By Spencer . June 11, 2013 . 1:14am

PS4_1More good news from Sony about the PlayStation 4. Over Twitter, Shuhei Yoshida confirmed PlayStation 4 is region free with a big smiley face. That’s great news for people that want to import games and we bet there’s still a crowd doing that here!

Was there really any doubt? In Kaz we trust!

  • epy

    Yes! They’re on fire!

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

The PS4 is the last true console as we know it.
This generation is the last traditional generation as we know it.
I’m proud of the directions Sony are taking with the PS4.

I deserve to play games on the PS4 and Sony deserves my money.

Let us embrace this last “gen” with all of our souls and go out with a bang!

    • Go2hell66

hopefully i’ll be dead before the next gen roles around then

    • Kyosuke Yoshino

Who knows? There’s a chance that PS5 will be good too:)

      • Tonton Ramos

        I doubt it… but I always believe…

        • Patrick Lucas Honeyman

You probably doubted the PS4 before the announcement. Hopefully this proves that SONY will be for the gamers for the foreseeable future.

    • darryl scott

what ever happn to wii u? right you guys…..
      right…?

  • mirumu

I wish I could buy Shuhei Yoshida a beer. A good one too.

    • Testsubject909

We should get him one of those expensive beers from a well known microbrewery.

      • mirumu

I’d like to give him one of these. My favorite.

        • Patrick Lucas Honeyman

          Yesbisu beer for sure…

          • mirumu

I like Yebisu a lot, it’s the best Japanese beer in my opinion, but it’s also something he could easily get any day. This needs to be something rare and special.

  • amagidyne

    I LOVE YOU ALL.

  • Go2hell66

there it is, the final blow to microsoft

    • Damarius Wingfield

You sir have earned yourself a drink!

    • Keima88

Sony just performed a limit break.

      And I am so happy…

    • Kevin Schwarz

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more to come.

  • Sardorim

Yes, Super Robot Wars for Next Gen will be mine! Mwahahahahaha~!!!

  • Lazulis

You go Sony, 4 for you Sony.

    And a 4 for me!

  • SirRichard

£350 price tag, 500GB hard drive, reveal after reveal of console-exclusive games or content, no always-on DRM, used games and sharing with friends go unmolested (with the smuggest victory smile I’ve seen in a while) and to top it off, it’s region-free.

Hell of an opener to E3. I know what I’m using for the next-gen.

  • Damarius Wingfield

Excellent, excellent *Rubs cat fur while sitting in chair*! Now all we need is Disgaea 5!

  • AlphaSixNine

Just one more Sony to completely destroy MS. Multiple User Accounts on PS4 like in PS3! I want all my PSN accounts from different regions usable on the PS4 too unlike in Vita. Make it happen!

    • Mr_SP

It has to happen. A single account on a family console is a jerk move. The Vita, on the other hand, is designed as a personal console… but it’s still not cool that I can’t play download-only Japanese games.

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

You can, there is just a bunch of hassle in doing it.

        • Mr_SP

Yeah… Not on my own account, though, and I’d have to buy a new memory card to do it. So, too much hassle, there.

  • Testsubject909

Taste the deliciousness of Import Friendly. Ah. It tastes like victory.

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

PS4 = Console of the year.

  • AokiShizuku

All of the awesome PS4 news is making me implode.

I am willing to support Sony further by paying for the PS+ service. GO SONY!

  • OneOkami

I wasn’t planning on buying any next-gen console at launch, but I’ve really never been so happy in my entire life to place a preorder on an upcoming console the way I did on the PS4 yesterday after Sony’s press conference. And that is because I in the face of a certain company that has decided to empower publishers to effectively take away my rights as a consumer and dictate how and what I can do with the games I consume, Sony not only supports my rights as a consumer, but respects the diversity of my gaming interests.

I am so happy to support Sony for this and send Microsoft and the publishers they sold out to a message by becoming a PS4 owner-and-waiting with no plans to buy an Xbox One.

  • Sentsuizan_93

So £349 + region free + upgradable hard drive + A lot of kickass games coming over / paying for online play (which seems like only downside) =
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    Interest piqued.

  • Gunstar BlueNeo

Region-free is the icing on the cake for me, PS4 FTW!

  • FetusZero

Sony has made my decision of which system to get in the upcoming feature damn easy. Normally I end up with more than one system.. but this time around it looks like I’ll stick to only one.

  • Bob Obb

    YESYESYESYESYES

  • http://momentsreprieve.com/index/ Aushria

Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV will be two of my imports for PS4, guaranteed. Just….Sony, they hit the nail on the head in every aspect of the PS4. The games, the hardware, the advertisement, I almost wonder if it’s too good to be true.

…Ah hell, who cares! Region Free, XV, and Kingdom Hearts 3—I’m pre-ordering next paycheck.

  • Rini11

    PS4=Instant buy for me:)

  • XiaomuArisu

My first Console generation with only one homeconsloe.

  • Luis Camargo

    HEEEELLLL YEEEAHHHH

This console gets better and better (except for paying for multiplayer)

  • Learii

MWAHAHA that 2 middle fingers to Microsoft right there sony you the best

  • Ni

first I was going to buy a Wii U and leave the ps4 for later. but after his is Ps4 first and Wii U later

  • $36598391

    Way to go Sony!!!

  • Kevin Schwarz

At this point in time Microsoft must be wondering “Maybe we f*cked up…”

    • Testsubject909

      No.

      They aren’t.

They’re still banking on the dudebros, the loyalist and the common people.

I expect no countermeasures other then “Stick with the plan”.

Hell, there are people who’re going “Oh! Final Fantasy XV and KH3 is going to be on Xbox One! Well I have no reason to get a PS-suck! I’ma get the glorious Xbox One!”

      I wish I was kidding.

  • ShadowDivz

    There was doubt?
The PSP,vita and PS3 were region free, it never ONCE crossed my mind that the PS4 might be region locked.

    • Firekitty

Well, the Vita is *kind of* region free. But they also made it kind of unreasonably clunky to switch between regions (assuming you want any sort of digital support for your games, or god forbid, PSP games from another region).
Their approach to it on the Vita had me kind of worried that they were going to go to the dark side.

      • ShadowDivz

        Agreed.

      • Testsubject909

Physically it’s region free. Digital is a whole other matter but the hardware itself is region free.

I have imported Retail games from Japan and they play.

The “kind of” region free you speak of applies to not just the Vita but the PSP and PS3 as those also required you to go through certain hoops and loops to get access to other regions.

So long as you do have access to those, it is region free digitally as well, period. So there’s really no “Kind of” here… It’s just that it’s not the easiest of features to access at times with the Vita.

  • Demeanor

GOD YES! YES! This alone is imho the deciding factor on which console to choose, let alone all the plethora of good reasons Sony is giving us. I can deal with PS Plus.

  • kaizin

that was just overkill Sony fantastic news on the region free

  • GVmanX
  • XiaomuArisu

    It is important.
Maybe its not the biggest thing but it is good to have no regionlocks

  • Elvick

    Who said it was?

On a site like siliconera… odds are it’s a selling feature for many.

To grandma and Sally Smith on the block? Yeah, they won’t give a shit.

  • Ferrick

the lack of region free had us begging for the english release of some titles for the 3ds, so go figure, on a site that shows eastern games, some of the cool looking ones are those that we may never get to play simply because of region lock and we will be forced to buy an eastern 3ds or WiiU just to be able to play it, so yes, for a site like ours, region free is a big deciding factor

  • http://twitter.com/matty_125 matty

I could tell you this, I would have a 3DS right now if weren’t region-locked.

To me, part of what makes a console is what it can actually play. Take out imports and you take out a sizeable chunk of what it can do. That’s how I see it, at least.

  • Elvick

    That wasn’t my point.

Just pointing out that on a site like this, of course people will be thrilled about it. So, don’t act like people’s uber excitement is them saying “zomg, the entire world is going to buy the PS4 because… REGION FREE!”.

I’ve never seen anyone ever say something of the sort.

I already agreed that the masses wouldn’t care. I didn’t even say they (casuals) didn’t “matter” either. I don’t know why you felt the need to create your reply to be honest with you.

    But whatever.

  • Kevadu

What is your point, man? Yes, most people don’t care. So what? As a regular importer, *I* care. I care a ton. This is absolutely a deciding feature for me. It’s the whole reason I didn’t buy a 3DS.

But you seem to be telling me not to care just because most people don’t…uh, why? Stop trying to turn this into a fanboy war. I don’t care whose ‘team’ wins, I’m just going to buy the stuff I want.

  • Firekitty

Except its’ not a bonus as far as I’m concerned, it IS a deciding factor and a game seller to me.

Region locking also massively encourages piracy, especially considering how often in the past games would come to the US but not Europe with seemingly no rhyme or reason.

  • michel

Sorry Sir, but, to me, it’s a decider.
