Square Enix Considered Rebranding Versus XIII To Final Fantasy XV Early On

By Sato . June 13, 2013 . 5:30pm

Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has been quite the busy man these past few days. In addition to the Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III interviews (which can be read here and here, respectively), he shared additional info during an earlier interview called the “Square Enix Members Exclusive Interview Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX” program, which was reported by Famitsu.

Nomura says during the interview that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was large enough in scope within the first year or two of having been announced, that Square Enix had already considered rebranding it as Final Fantasy XV. It was decided two years ago that it would shift to next-gen consoles and it was officially decided to move the title over as Final Fantasy XV sometime last year.

Nomura talked a little about the game’s system. “Action is the base, and there aren’t too many turn-based elements,” he explained. That said, “We’re being careful to not make it completely action, since we want it to be a “Final Fantasy” action game, so we’re putting a lot of considerations into such matters.”

The director would like to show the Final Fantasy feeling to it by allowing you to fight alongside party members and having to think about certain actions you take.

In regards to the main character, Noctis, Nomura shared his opinion. “Honestly, his inside (personality) isn’t very cool. Judging by his appearance, he may look that way, but he’s actually quite the weirdo. (laugh)”

Finally, Nomura explained the delay in relaying information about the game publicly. Since moving Final Fantasy XV to next-gen consoles, Square have decided to increase the quality while using the Luminous Studio engine, which explains its lengthy delay and the lift of the “informational ban” Nomura had previously mentioned.

In addition to Final Fantasy XV info, Nomura also touched upon additional Kingdom Hearts III. The director did his best to answer many questions that fans have been asking.

“I can’t say anything for now, but we always have the intent to prepare surprises” Nomura said in regards to any new worlds in Kingdom Hearts III. “If possible, we’d like to add even more of those surprising worlds, this time around.”

Nomura talked a little bit about the upcoming battle system, which he stated will be based on Kingdom Hearts II’s system, but in an evolved form.

“I believe that putting a number on a title requires a legitimate evolution. In addition to what’s expected, I believe that a sense of comfort is also required,” said Nomura. “Everyone seemed to like the battle system of Kingdom Hearts II, so we’d like to evolve that. However, we’d also like to add elements that were popular in spin-off titles, along with parts I felt had room for improvement.”

Many fans have wondered what kind of characters we’ll be seeing in Kingdom Hearts III. While Nomura doesn’t have answers, he mentioned some ideas they’ve been exploring, such as having more Final Fantasy characters and the possibility of being able to control other characters aside from Sora.

According to Nomura, the summoning system will be different from past titles. Finally, he mentioned that they’re currently exploring the possibility of having some sort of online multiplayer feature, that has yet to be seen in any Kingdom Hearts title.

Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III are currently in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

No matter how many times I see images of in-game Sora I can’t believe how amazing it looks

    • ShadowDivz

    • Curan_Altea

Reminds of when you’d watch a cg cutscene with a friend and say something like “Maybe one day, games will actually look this good.”

      • CirnoLakes

Could y’all possible show me the kind of footage y’all are talking about?

Because the footage I’ve seen has been mostly limited to the trailer, the only real footage of the new game being a part where Sora is followed around by this amusing little stream/string of heartless.

Which looks like a mild polygon update over Kingdom Hearts 2. If anything was impressive, it was the fact of what looked like in game footage where Sora wall jumped from the wall to the heartless. In terms of gameplay that’s mechanically interesting.

Not that I’m complaining. There’s just nothing that seems much apart from the game industry of the past ten years. I don’t think this reflects thoughts of “maybe one day, games will actually look this good”, because I’ve been seeing games look this good already, for around a decade.

It’s not like that’s an insult, though. In fact, the fact that Kingdom Hearts 3 doesn’t seem very graphically impressive is a compliment from me. When I saw the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer and it looked extremely last gen and dated I breathed a sigh that most likely Square Enix probably got their priorities back in order. Because if there’s anything wrong with Square Enix games nowadays, it is that they’ve chased graphics at the expense of everything else.

I am impressed by the fact that Kingdom Hearts 3 doesn’t look graphically impressive.

    • CirnoLakes

      Does it look so amazing?

I don’t see anything which would bring even a fraction of the capabilities of the PlayStation 4 out. To me it looks shockingly similar to the older Kingdom Hearts games.

The part where Sora is being followed by a string of nobodies doesn’t look at that revolutionary. I’ve been playing Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 on PCSX2 for years. So it doesn’t look that different to me from a game that came out over a decade ago. Heck, it doesn’t yet invoke much from me that isn’t already there on the handheld games.

That being said, the heartless string footage at least looks interesting. I just don’t see anything particularly unusual.

      • It was an FMV representative of the in house demo that they have, but not a perfect replica or demonstration. Also, it needs to be similar, you need that feeling of familiarity or you will run into a disconnect and feel as though the game merely has the name rather than the content.

Take Dream Drop Distance for example. Many people love the game, but for me; and many others, flow motion feels like a huge disconnect from the core titles, with the Command deck thrown it. Dream Drop Distance feels as though the series formula has changed so drastically from the core titles, that it is about to lose it’s basic identity as a series, with each title being vastly different…

The same would hold true if they went buck wild and made Kingdom hearts 3 look more realistic. It may sound like a nice gesture or idea, but when executed it will feel foreign and out of place.

The only thing I can see keeping this a Kingdom Hearts game in feel and aesthetics is if the graphics remain similar and they return to the combat of the console entries.

        I get the feeling that you are relieved it doesn’t look so different, so I won’t press any further…It just felt good to get that off my chest. ^^;

        • CirnoLakes

“Also, it needs to be similar”
Right, of course. Kingdom Hearts needs to be Kingdom Hearts in aesthetic.

That doesn’t mean there’s anything jaw dropping “next gen” looking about this game. From a gameplay perspective, the flow does look good. And is something Kingdom Hearts fans have been craving aesthetically and mechanically for years when they’ve just been getting handheld games.

I didn’t imply anywhere that Kingdom Hearts games would benefit in any way from looking realistic. On the contrary I think that would be a terrible idea and I’d be extremely against them making Kingdom Hearts look realistic. I also don’t think that Kingdom Hearts 3 having amazing graphics would be a good thing, because I fee like graphics have been one of the worst things plaguing Square Enix games.

I just don’t see how the game looks all that new. Especially graphically. What looks new about Kingdom Hearts 3, to me, is that it has Sora wall jumping onto a stream of heartless.

    • Kitestwinblades

Primary colors – Making stylish main characters, since forever XD
-Although I know there’s MUCH more to it that :3

  • CirnoLakes

It seems that the fans have been predicting that Final Fantasy Versus would become Final Fantasy XV for years. Or I’ve even heard fans telling them through outlets Square Enix would never hear them from to rebrand it Final Fantasy XV for years, as well.

Turns out they were right. I honestly did not see it coming at all just for the fact that it lies in the same universe as Final Fantasy XIII. But they did it. Kind of sets and interesting precedent, too.

    • Aoshi00

I didn’t know they would actually rename it, but I had wished for a long time they should, and now am so glad they did. Since Agito 13 had become Type-0 a long time ago, I didn’t think it’s too surprising, and frankly Versus doesn’t share anything w/ 13. And it would just be awkward to still be at number 13 after so many years and not “moving on” to remind fans this project took such a long time. If they don’t call this 15, then 15 might not come in another 5 or 10 years.

I think as long as they keep the FF feel, an action RPG could still be a legit numbered FF. I actually kinda consider Lost Odyssey FF11 and the Last Story 14 since I don’t like the MMO games taking the numbers, and those 2 games had Sakaguchi and Uematsu :) (I wasn’t too crazy about 12 & 13, but liked 13-2) Personally I enjoyed 13-2 a lot in a Chrono Trigger way, looking forward to Lightning Returns, looks like S-E is on the right track (I was hoping for a HD console JRPG for so long)

    • Nephroxous

Its not that surprising to be honest. Development for a single FF title takes years. I think it was… VIII, IX and X that got announced back in the day at the same time, when they showed that demo of a black-haired Titus running around.

  • Herok♞

Well that explains the info drought and I guess I am fine with one KH battle system for consoles and the other for handhelds.

  • Zuhri69

I just want to know when will it be released. My wallet need to be ready. (T_T)

    • mike dickson

      patient’s is virtue my friend

      • Zuhri69

        Dude, 7 years.

        • mike dickson

i am aware but one more year can’t hurt

  • Frii

Online multiplayer in KH3? I am expecting friends can control and fooling around with the 2 NPCs (Donald and Goofy), it will be fun to have that feature when I am bored playing alone.

  • Suriel Cruz

    Noctis a weirdo??!!… instabuy! xD

    • CirnoLakes

I’m glad that some people think like that. I feel like there’s this vocal minority of people who have been whining about whiny effeminate and uncool characters for so long that I feel like they’d never be impressed unless they all looked like Nier.

I much better enjoy the lighthearted goofballs and weirdos than brooding macho-men that a lot of Americans sadly seem to want.

Noctis sounds a little more interesting now that Notics doesn’t sound too cool for school. I was afraid he was going to be another brooding character.

      • DongT

agreed, way to many “ex special forces space marine commando gun guys” in the american market. personally i prefer characters that are quirky, silly, and sometimes bishie.

        • Shady Shariest

          *Watches MGS V trailer*
Ehh…It doesn’t seem to be only America doing that…

          • DongT

i consider that one of the rare exceptions, fine with me due to snake being just plain awesome XD besides i think raiden showed that bishies and mgs dont mix lol, even though i personally liked him.

          • Shady Shariest

I know one dude that is Die Hard fan of MGS and Snake, so…

            “Know that feel, bro” :P

And agreed, MGS V’s trailer just popped in my mind immediately after i read that bit of your comment .)

(That Dude is on Twitter under @ThisIsSnaik. funny guy)

          • Shady Shariest

And to add a little layer of emotion to end this disqussion:

  • Göran Isacson

I have to admit, I don’t really get how a change in engine led to a massive information lockdown. Like, if they wanted to keep the Luminous Engine itself a secret, why not just announce this change as soon as they showed Agnis Philosophy? Afraid to lose face if they admitted they had made a change of engine?

The part about Noctis makes me wonder though… what FF protagonist DOES have a cool inside character? The closest thing I can think of is Cecil. Bartz was a fun-loving goofball to and through, Terra was a bit too fish out of water to be cool, Cloud… “le’ts mosey” and Honey Bee Inn is all I’m saying, Squall was more socially awkward than cool, Zidane was a flirt and a prankster, Tidus wasn’t perhaps the most self-conscious guy but not what I’d call cool… okay, Balthier was hella cool I guess, and Lightning is…

…. Iii don’t know? Can we call Lightning “cool”? Like, she’s badass and all but also pretty inept with people and emotions. So what I’m saying is that really, Noctis is in pretty good company. I do admit though, the scene with him and his dad gave him major brownie points for me, because holy heck when was the last time we had a protagonist with an existing,

FUNCTIONAL relationship with their parents in a FF game? Now THERE’S a rarity.

    • Steven Higgins

In Japan, those with aloof, distant, cat-like personalities like Cloud, Squall and Lightning are considered the cool type.

      • Mithfalath

I guess you’re right! And oh, the mysterious types get bonus points too. ;)

      • Göran Isacson

Huh. Is it a question of a different definition then? Like, when I think “cool” I think… well, as I said, Baltheir is the only one who is TRULY cool, Cloud and Squall and Lightnings aloof personalities are pretty much just their way to hide the fact they have varying degrees of cluelessness and that just… doesn’t strike me as cool at all? Like, I agree that they seem cool on the surface level, but still: their insides are not that cool at all, so Noctis should still be in pretty good company. Though I guess that it might simply be the case that Nomura wants to tell people that “no really, this guy is way not as cool as he first appears” and that they shouldn’t get too attached to his initial appearance. A sort of “wait until you play the game until you start speculating about his personality”.

        • Steven Higgins

It’s more a question of cultural differences. What the Japanese refer to as “cool” we call “emo”

          • Miss_Madness

You know emo is just one of those terms that have just lost their true meanings over time.

        • Ehren Rivers

In this instance, “cool” means sort of temperature-wise and has a little to do with how collected a person they are: Noctis seems cool as in cold or distant perhaps, and maybe even level-headed, but he’s actually meant to be a quirky character that won’t really fit into the Cloud/Squall/Lightning style of “Look at me funny and I will punch you in the throat”.

You’re looking at “cool” from the ‘slick’, ‘smooth’, and/or ‘socially adept’ angle. Both can be correct interpretations of the term.

          • natchu96

And ironically, Cloud, Squall, and Lightning are all weather references . . .

          • Ehren Rivers

Oh my yes. ‘Cause them’s some…

    • 07thCrow

Don’t forget “Ms.” Cloud and his tutorial! xD

Also, you make very valid points about all the FF protagonists (you kinda forgot Zack “the puppy” though) having their own ‘weird’ personality and quirks. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Noctis’ own personality, especially since he sounds more “weird” than his predecessors. :)

      • Göran Isacson

If they ever make a FF7 remake, I demand glorious Ms Cloud in high-definition, pink dress glory. I DEMAND IT.

Yeah, I do wonder what Noctis thing will be. Maybe relying a lot on his friends and defer to them in his personal life, like maybe going on a date and listening to every piece of advice Gladiolus gives him… even if it’s hilariously bad and intentionally troll-like, just because he’s totally convinced Gladi is a bad-ass ladies man that can do no wrong. Or something like that.

        • 07thCrow

YES! With a special cutscene that has random sparkles and flowers; complete a frilly-pink twirl! ALL HAIL MS. CLOUD!

I agree that Noctis looks like he’d be very close to his friends (the little high-five in the trailer was a nice touch). And yes! A straight-faced-troll-advising Gladiolus would be hilarious! And totally bad-ass! Not to mention it would be a refreshing clash. Noctis looks like he’d be very childishly gullible around the people he trusts, but serious and cold otherwise.

    • Squall probably was weird on his own way:

      Student: Hello Squall!
      Squall: …
      Student: Ookaaay…
      Squall: Hey.
      Student: Yeah?
Squall: Play Triple Triad with me. *fanboy look*
      Student: Um… sure.

      • CirnoLakes

Oh, the ways which gameplay clash with canon characterization.

” I don’t really get how a change in engine led to a massive information lockdown. Like, if they wanted to keep the Luminous Engine itself a secret, why not just announce this change as soon as they showed Agnis Philosophy?”

for the same reason everybody revealed their “tech demos” last year instead of just saying they were, in fact, games in development =
because Sony and Microsoft hadn’t formally announced there even was a next-gen console yet at the time.

until Sony and MS did so, developers aren’t allowed to reveal anything as next-gen games (as that would essentially be an announcement of the upcoming consoles).

silly, perhaps; but that’s just how it goes.

no one gets to announce PS4/XBOne games until Sony and Microsoft actually reveal a PS4/XBOne.

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, guess that makes sense… and I guess that explains why they didn’t reveal the game on Sonys PS4 reveal: if it’s a multiplatform title they have to wait until the XBONE reveal, and… I guess that since XBONE was so close to E3 they may as well go for broke there.

    • Dillon Rider

he doesn’t mean cool as in neato, or socially awesome, he means cool as in aloof, stoic or emo basically. which cloud was in sequels, sqaul was in the game, and lightning are. also Terra was rather quiet but she wasn’t really aloof. Cecil, TWOL, and firion were also like this to an extent. so hes basically saying, just because noctis looks emo or brooding doesn’t mean he is, hes a pretty eccentric weirdo it sounds like. to what extent we don’t know, but yeah that’s what he meant.

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, that makes a bit more sense. If Noctis turns out to be much more… outgoing, even if he looks like he’d be the “whatever” type, I think I’d really like that. That he’d kind of be this socially awkward prince-type who doesn’t really know how to handle himself outside of ultra-formal events but will TRY HIS BEST, or something along those lines… that’d be fun to see.

    • Virevolte

To me, Zidane was cool. ^^

      • Shady Shariest

He was also the best character to play in Dissidia’s :D

        • Nope, Ex-Death.

          • Shady Shariest

Oh yeah! I forgot about him!
I found him hard to control though, if i remember rightly he had those circle teleports?

          • Omni Block dude.

          • Shady Shariest

… Apparently i remember even less about those games than i thought!

            …Might need to buy a VITA and re-live em…

          • DOO EET

Dissidia 012 still keeps my PSP alive even though it’s been a good while since it’s release.

          • Shady Shariest

Agh, the thing is… 2 tekkens, Dissidias and BBS in 1 month BROKE my PSP ;-( Already tried replacing analog stick…It no work…

And it was the first model too :-( I adored it more than my Pink Gameboy Advance :P (Funny story, got to choose between GBA or PS2…yeah…I chose the pink one…)

And maybe now that they actually have NEW CHARACTERS we might see a new Dissidia sometime! And with new KH…Mickey Mouse might be merciful enough to allow KH chars to be used :P

          • Nomura stated he won’t work on any new Dissidia anymore, he may however do a crossover again in the future but never again following the Dissidia canon nor the fighting structure, sad I know.

As for KH characters oh no, they are best stay on KH.
And actually if we check on Dissidia’s roots, originally SE wanted to create a KH game about a colliseum where Final Fantasy characters would clash in battle but the idea was scrapped since they saw it’d be better to do a tribute entirely about Final Fantasy characters rather than staying with the KH theme nor they wanted the FF characters get obscured by the KH characters plus they were tied with limitations regarding the plot and stuff, KH was out of context for the things they wanted to do that ended up in Dissidia.

If you ask me Im glad it turned out that way, I think KH characters would take away the feel the original Final Fantasy characters evoke.

          • Shady Shariest

Hmmm-m… I always thought of them as DLC…Like Cloud’s and Sephiroth’s KH attire.

But thanks for the chatter :)

          • Costumes for FF characters are alright I guess lol.

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, I guess that I kind of agree with you… I think I’m getting a little lost in semantics here. Zidane is definitely an awesome character, real stand-up kinda guy, but he’s not as collected as Balthier was. I guess it’s kind of like the difference between James Bond and… Jack Sparrow, maybe? Both are winners, but you’d never see Bond do a real prat-fall that he couldn’t escape from with his dignity intact. Zidane got slapped for fondling princess butts, Freya shot his attempts down, the marriage at Conde Petie ended with his kiss-attempt backfiring, he didn’t even know what to do with Eikos crush on him… none of which makes him a bad character, mind! He just had funny and un-cool moments.

    • Vash bane

I liked the cloud the most well… because at the time I understood that character and well… emotionally we were kinda the same..(if you get that)
so in all cloud was cool to me…plus that big%[email protected] sword XDDDD

      • Göran Isacson

Yeah, I guess that in the end I get kinda bogged down in what the world “cool” really means. I prefer to look at it from a “how are they written” angle, rather than “what emotions do they instill in me” angle. Like I said, Cloud is pretty efficient in a fight and he’s a relatable character with all his emotions and strong points AND weak points… but I interpret “coolness” to mean that a character can remain calm under pressure, doesn’t let things affect their plans, remain functional even in bad situations, always has something smart to say, takes things in stride and so on, you can see how Cloud may fall short of the mark.

Cloud is VERY emotional and deep down he’s very confused about what he really wants in life. His cold exterior is a front to protect a vulnerable core, not a result of him just being naturally laid-back and stoic and able to roll with the punches. Cloud is VERY emotionally driven, and that does not mean I think he’s a bad character, he’s just not TECHNICALLY “cool”… if you get my drift?

        • Vash bane

yeah I understand where you coming from

maybe Jecht fits in that category?

          (auron , zell?)

          • Göran Isacson

I think that Auron REALLY good example of my image of cool. It is true that Auron has had a lot of bad stuff happen and he’s probably bottling stuff up inside, but to my memory he didn’t let that actively prevent him from accomplishing his goals and resolving his internal issues weren’t a large part of his characters arc. He was mostly just there to be effective and active.

    • Kchorrex

Zidane was pretty cool in my opinion, he was a very nice and welcome change compared to Cloud and Squall (not emo, outgoing, always positive and an outright skirt-chaser). Also in FFVI you could argue there were several protagonists, Locke, Celes and Edgar were pretty cool. I see what you did with FFXII hahaha… that’s another story but I basically agree :/. Lightning… well, Nomura has gone on record saying that she is like a female version of Cloud, so there you go. Zack in Crisis Core is pretty cool though, the character development shows throughout the game, it’s hard not to get emotionally invested in the character, it’s the only time I’ve been really close to manly tears at the end of a FF game :3
I agree with you, the scene with the father was a really nice detail, it adds another layer that is rare even in anime protagonists (just count how many characters live without their parents for whatever reasons, it’s borderline insane).

      • Göran Isacson

I agree that Zidane is a very lovable character, and next to Balthier I would say he’s one of the cooler characters as I define cool from the Sony era. I guess it’s just that he’s so outgoing and social that he’s more… more “awesome” than “cool”, if that makes any sense?

It really is kind of weird how many jrpgs have you as an orphan (of course considering the stuff we’ve seen it’s entirely possible that Noctis WILL become an orphan too…) or just don’t have any relationship at all between parents and children. It’s one thing to ensure that your hero has no incentive to just kick back and ignore the big quest, but the sheer number of games in which it’s like the mother and father may not have existed at all is kind of mindboggling.

  • Lemon

“such as having more Final Fantasy characters and the possibility of being able to control other characters aside from Sora.”

    • Shady Shariest

I have always wanted to play as Goofy :P

      • Göran Isacson

You and me both man. I think that if they let you play Goofy as a cross between a Dragoon and a Monk, with a lot of high-jumping shield-bashing action? Goofy could be REAL cool to play as.

        • Shady Shariest

Yeah, but there is one problem…
When you can play as Goofy AND/OR DONALD…
          (BattleMage+Priest WTF!)

How will we find time for Sora? :D:

    • Nightmesh

I always wonder if they could do an online mode where friends could just jump in and out as your party members.

    • Ninastars

Mission Mode was one of my favourite parts about Days. Maybe they could introduce a similar system that lets you play as other characters and that could be the online multiplayer they’re talking about.

    • Kchorrex

Yes please, but no more FF7 cameos. Let other classic characters take the spotlight.

  • Steven Higgins

Just tell me if Kairi is going to be more than a plot device this time around Nomura. I know your not exactly comfortable with female characters but c’mon, give Kairi some love. She’s been pushed to the sidelines for far too long. OOH! Maybe have a scenario where SHE has to rescue SORA! That would be awesome.

And I for one saw quite a difference from previous titles. The graphics looked much smoother than in KHII, in fact the gameplay footage was on par with the opening and ending FMVs from that gameand the art style itself is closer to TWEWY then KH especially in the way the eyes look.

And I don’t think there’s’ anything wrong with drastic gameplay changes. After all that’s how we got the command deck, a favorite if many. Yes I know that it was a different team from KH and KHII But Nomura still could have told them to stick to the original formula. He is the director after all.

Personally, I almost never used the flowmotion for battle anyway because I prefer a more hands-on approach. That being said, I loved how easy it made getting across the environments.

People say they want larger environments in KHIII but that they don’t want flowmotion. I don’t think they realize how tedious and time-consuming it would be to cross larger rooms without it.

    • CirnoLakes

I’m glad someone out there is saying it. I always found major frustration with the fact Kairi just basically up and disappeared from the picture in Kingdom Hearts games.

Forcing her into the role of being nothing more than a plot device was just irritating. I kept spending most of the first game saying “okay Kairi, now we got Kairi. Get in my party I want to fight alongside Kairi and Riku.”

Then there was the second game, and I was like “Kairi, Kairi, okay there’s some Namine and Roxas and they’re pretty cool too. When do I get Kairi in my party? I worked for this. I spent the rest of the last game searching for Kairi because Sora luv Kairi.”

And then there was no Kairi, only Sora and Riku.

And then a few years later or something I saw a comic by VGCats about Sora and Riku being gay for each other and all made sense. I mean it was blatant yaoi bait. I know a lot of people like to say it was “bromance” or “ah, they’re just good friends. No, it was gay. Square Enix just won’t state as much. And the whole move was just to get fujoshi to break out their wallets at Sora forgetting Kairi entirely and having a gay happy ever after with Riku.

Which is cool. I approve. I’m not straight. I understand Sora, I don’t like boobs either. Gay bait is awesome bait.

But Kairi deserves better than that. Heck, every time Kingdom Hearts has a girl character she either gets killed off or thrown into a black abyss never to be seen again. Come on Square Enix, you can have gay bait without mistreating your female characters.

      • I never really seen Kairi as a potential warrior until BBS and the whole accidental heritage ceremony, even her design in KH II pretty much screamed “Heeey I became much more fragile!”.

But I suppose she didn’t knew of her potential all the time until 3D so I agree it’d be a crime if she’s not a relevant fighter in 3D and the fact she’s a princess of the heart and a keyblade wielder could make her the ultimate 7th light.

As for the gay bait I only saw it as marketing strategy to gain fujoshi appeal. Heck, the entire KH II subplot and enemies were fujoshi fanservice but I think it doesn’t pass further from bait, KH I demonstrated a stronger, sweet hetero loving.

      • Steven Higgins

I’m gay too, but I don’t really see Sora and Riku being like that, unless it’s one-sided on Riku’s part, which I also doubt because the first game made it seem like he had a thing for Kairi too.

Anyway, the reason I say that is the Sora is much more reserved about his emotions with Kairi than he is with Riku. That tends to happen around the person you have those feelings for because your afraid of being rejected, so you rein it in.

They’re considering online multiplayer for KHIII just to satisfy the Xbone fans.

    • CirnoLakes

      Any evidence of that?

I know that the XBOX 360 stressed online multiplayer more than was necessary for many games. While the PlayStation 3 was blamed by some as internet-phobic and not promoting online multiplayer enough. This being partially from XBOX having origins in PC gaming culture, which was one of the first to embrace online gaming.

(Which I think reflects an interesting divide in video game culture in East Asia, Nintendo who has ignored online for the longest time, and Sony who was slightly late to the party barely having online with the PlayStation 2. And inferior if I’m not mistaken, to both the XBOX and the Dreamcast. While in South Korea it seems like people hardly play games that aren’t online games, and seem more in love with online gaming than both the United States and Europe combined.)

But online multiplayer is just become more popular. Period. I doubt it has anything to do with the XBOX. The online revolution is one that is still happening and still awkwardly continuing to hit offline games. It is just a reality of technology. Local multiplayer used to be a big thing. Now that the internet is everywhere, however, local multiplayer isn’t as important when friends can just play together online. And it isn’t just online multiplayer that has been foisted into just about every single game for a while now, lots of singleplayer games that never needed any multiplayer aspect have been given local multiplayer. Even games like Star Ocean 3 had local multiplayer. Multiplayer in general has always been something that the game industry has cared about.

In fact, before PCs took over the multiplayer world with online, multiplayer was one of the major strengths of consoles over the PC. Sure, you could PC gaming, but if you wanted to play with your friends, a console was much better since early computers didn’t have the good multi-controller support. Consoles were about sitting in the living room with your friends and playing a multiplayer game you couldn’t play on the PC. And PC gaming was less popular because it was seen as somewhat of a loner thing, among others.

If consoles shift from that to simply becoming a singleplayer, loner system, they’re going to lose one of the biggest strengths that carried them through the 80s and 90s. It isn’t just PC elitism that some people think that “console gaming is dying”, it is because the industry has shifted in so many various ways, that what used to be called “console gaming” is now starting to be called “PC gaming”. And consoles are losing a lot of advantages that people remember, back in the early days, was actually the selling point of consoles. Multiplayer was one of those things that made console gaming matter back in the 1990s and the 1980s as well.

I don’t like the XBOX, but caring about multiplayer is a good thing. Multiplayer has mattered to gamers since the Atari 2600. And if PCs become the superior system for multiplayer, it means that consoles have lost yet another advantage to PC gaming. And if console gaming loses every advantage over PC gaming, console gaming will die.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Or maybe they’re considering (online) multiplayer because it’s been in the series before and not because of the platforms it’s on.

358/2 Days and BbS would like to have a word with you…

  • Detrimont

Good, KH2 had my favourite battle system, didnt like the limited abilities of the spinoffs (meaning at one time), plus i liked being able to chain together more and more attacks as the game progressed

    • Im reversed. I prefer Command slot + Shotlocks way better than the MP system, I never used magic sides from Cure and Aero until BBS and I actually did something else than mashing X and sometimes triangle.

      • I like both. I do enjoy the classic feel. I just wish there were a more streamlined way for activating the magic. (I do slightly remeber mapping spells to a button while the shoulder buttons are held down… I think :P)

        • I hope they make magic much stronger in this new release, the damage output and range for magic in KH II was rather underwhelming except for some that had elemental weakness like Thunder for the Heartless on Tron’s world.

And I hope Cure doesn’t consume all your bar.

          • Rayhan PromisedGallery

            how about a combination?
The L1 “shortcut” will give you unique command attack like in BBS and also normal magic

          • Hmm not a bad idea, it’d be a good combination to have commands shortcuts and stylish KH II combos, one thing that I didn’t liked from 3D was the boring combo sequences but with flowmotion maybe nobody used combos either way lol.

    • this was awesome. Not to mention the animations were constantly shanging with each new tier of attack instead of the slash sideways>slash down>slash up>Reapeat SS, SD,SU

  • d19xx

I personally think it’s to disassociate the game from XIII….

    • komiko12

Dunno. If I remember right, they said that they didn’t change the story so Etro would be involved in the story.

    • saxophone15

I don’t see how that can be the case when they considered changing the name to XV before XIII was even out.

Also, I’m pretty sure Square Enix don’t think as badly about XIII as some other people do.

  • M’iau M’iaut

The first stories of this as I recall preceded FF13’s release, so I don’t doubt it for a moment.

  • SpecDotSign

My question is did they switch Versus XIII to Final Fantasy XV just to get out of the exclusive deal they had with Sony? It seems odd that they kept insisting that it was an exclusive title while it was still named Versus XIII. Why isn’t anyone asking them this question??

    • Kchorrex

Good point, I had forgotten about that. It’s probably that, like the Resident Evil 3/Code Veronica thing.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

i’m just hoping KH3 will have more USEFUL party member. Unlike in KH2 where around Lvl.60 Sora being OP compared to all useless party members

    • KingRuff

By Lvl.60 in KH2 I only remembered I had party members when I wanted to Drive change, or when Donald sneak cast Thunder to steal my spotlight at the end of a battle. That being said, I believe that your party members can only be so helpful before it interferes with the player’s sense of achievement. In laymans terms, if all of the AI is just as good as you, why do we need you?

  • wahyudil

I only has one question for Nomura … will they ever come to Wii U? thats all

    • Anime10121

Considering both are being built for next gen systems with considerably more power than the WiiU, I sincerely doubt it. It would be nice for the WiiU to have more third party support, but hey, thats what I’m getting my PS4 for, an addition to my PS3/Wii U combo :)

    • Kchorrex

If KH3 and Versus were available for the WiiU, they should’ve been announced for the PS3 and 360 as well, since the difference is not that big. At least in the case of versus I doubt it, because they moved the game to a next-gen engine. Maybe some other games in the future.

  • Chiupon

    Fighting ALONGSIDE party members…

hnngh i think noctis is gonna be the only playable character… he better be likeable. I’m already kind of miffed at the all-male playable cast

nomura’s misogyny is getting really annoying

    • outlawauron

How is creating a game with an all-male cast (which it isn’t. There’s two female main characters in the game, but we’ve only seen 4 characters fight), somehow equate to a hatred of women?

    • KingRuff

So by your reasoning a game with an all female cast would be misandry? Not only are you wrong on the all-male cast statement, you also are coming off as one of those ultra-feminist children who calls the misogyny card every time she doesn’t get what she wants. Please grow up.

      • Chiupon

        i was joking
        lrn2 identify jokes
If I was serious it probably would’ve been in not all lower case letters with zero punctuation

Although I would definitely identify a game with an all female cast as pandering, but we aren’t gonna talk about my feelings towards FFX-2.
but i’m pretty sure the playable cast is all male. i don’t care honestly because it suits the theme of the game and really wouldn’t make sense for a female character to be all up in Nomura’s homosexual space odyssey

  • Shady Shariest

Should anyone be surprised by this?

Lighting developed her own saga, Agito became Type-0 (yet to be seen in PAL) And XIV was disliked to hell and back (By people who didn’t PLAY it…Just “Played”)

FFXV might do better without any connections to Failbula Nova Chrystalis :/

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

It sounds like it still has those connections, since he’s said that nothing about the story has actually changed, just the platforms it will be on.

      • Shady Shariest

        Funny thing, i actually read about them not changing anything near-immediately after commenting here :{

    • LynxAmali

The thing with the original plan for XIII was that they were all going to be separate stories, just only using the very basic core Mythos. They were also handled by different teams if I remember right.

      • Shady Shariest

        Ah, thanks for clarifying :)

  • I just got my beta code for FFXIV ps3!

    • Oo make that 2! ;)

  • KingRuff

I kinda like the idea that Noctis isn’t portrayed exactly how he looks. Most games choose to forgo the “Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover” method. It makes Noctis feel more realistic and relatable, both of which enhance the story considerably. If I’m gonna follow him around for the whole game at least make him someone I could care about.

  • protofox

Online? how about something like birth by sleep..but maybe let us..i dont know..create our own characters? maybe a mission mode where we can play though parts of the game’s story mode with friends and their keybladers

    • that’s a great Idea you have !!!

  • artemisthemp

Online MP… Please Square Enix don’t put that in Kingdom Hearts

    • if the Online MP was unrelated to the story & has a different “New Game” I’ll gladly accept.

      • artemisthemp

And there is no Trophies for it.

  • Asuna Ilano

I wish we could see Xion in this game. I really like her. It would be better if we could play as her (I don’t mind if it’s non-story related missions).
