Sonic Lost World Has Nothing To Do With Sonic X-treme

By Matt Hawkins . June 14, 2013 . 1:00pm

Many have made comparisons between Sonic Lost World and Sonic X-treme. The former is the latest release to star Sega’s spiky mascot. The latter was designed to be his original debut in the 3D space for the Sega Saturn, but was cancelled for a variety of reasons.

Some wondered if Sonic Lost World is an homage to Sonic X-treme, while others believe that there is no connection whatsoever. Siliconera asked Takashi Iizuka, the man in charge of Sonic Team, what the deal was. He replied:

“The viewpoint is based upon the idea of expanding the forward view, because the sight lines have sometimes been limited, resulting in hindered gameplay. With the change, the new routes are possible, which expands gameplay. So that’s the point of the game itself.

Actually, no one in the team, except myself, are even aware of Sonic X-treme’s existence. So it’s just a coincidence.”

Sonic Lost World will be available in 2013 for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Wow. That is a complete and total lie.

  • GameTaco

    I, for one, am surprised.

That is, assuming that this isn’t just a statement that needs to be made in order to protect the Lost World developers from being liable of taking the idea from the X-Treme developers. Such things happen, so it is perfectly understandable.

At any rate, at least they’re not denying that Lost World may be a slight homage to Super Mario Galaxy, what with the giant springs transitioning Sonic between planetoids. It feels good to be excited about Sonic games again~

  • Freud_Hater

Well, that’s a pretty awesome reply

‘Well, no one knows about that game except me, so… No, it’s not an homage.’ Love it XD

  • I’m not surprised actually. A lot of that era’s Sonic development
happened with teams in the US. Sonic X-Treme was being developed by STI
(Sega Technical Institute), a small US team that had assisted with Sonic
2 and Sonic 3&K. And remember, people didn’t really even know that much about X-Treme until after it was canned in the first place. Most of what we know now is just from what fans have heavily researched. Makes perfect sense that Sega’s Japanese studios didn’t really know at all about the game.

some one needs to do an expose (or maybe they have) on the relationship between STI and SOJ, it seems at first very amicable (sonic 2, 3, etc…) but later especially with the 32x and the katana vs dreamcast conflict, it seemed to devolve in to adversarial and pretty much destructive relationship…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

ok,Whatever you say Sega… * just a coincidence.* haha I’m still hyped ether way

  • Uso Ewin

So it was Sonic Galaxy all along

    • grevlinghore

      Actually, it was Dolan

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, not sure what to make of that statement since it sure LOOKS like it draws some inspiration from Sonic X-Treme… but I can’t deny that it IS possible that with personnel turn-overs and new blood and what not, it is entirely possible the whole team may just not be aware of the Sonic game that would not be.

  • Auvers

Haha how is it possible the videos and information for it are all over the place for all to see and the people working at Sega besides a senior member know about it? Okay Izuka okay.

  • I dont find that too unbelievable, I had never even heard of sonic x-treme until people started comparing the two

    • wahyudil

      same here

    • ShadowDivz

  • Haseyo

I never even heard of Sonic X-treme and I’ve been playing Sonic since 1 on Genesis.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Well, i believe this is not actually really surprising here considering that Team Sonic have been numerously restructured. Who knows how many of the older member still actually reside inside the Team.

  • GuyAlpha

Well, Sonic X-treme was cancelled so it’s not unlikely that they wouldn’t know about it. If it really is just a coincidence then well, damn.

  • Oni123

They could have just left it vague….Well I’m still gonna pretend they’re related. 8D X-tream lives on!

  • Matthew Brannock

the 6 alien creatures is straight from one of the sonic x-treme plots

  • ShadowDivz

There. Now we all shut up about it.
    …But we will always wonder.

  • Guest

I want to try X-Treme, I got interested in it a few years back when I first heard of it. It doesn’t look very good in my opinion, but out of curiosity I want to play it. I always wish I could play cancelled games to see what they were like.
