Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Is Gearing Up To Be A Next Generation Game

By Spencer . June 18, 2013 . 12:10pm

guilty1While we were talking about BlazBlue: Chronophantasm, I asked Arc System Works president Minoru Kidooka what’s going on with Guilty Gear. I thought Siliconera readers might be curious after seeing the Guilty Gear Xrd –SIGN- trailer from Arc System Works.

Kidooka replied that we’ll find out more about Guilty Gear at E3… in 2014. “Most likely, [creator] Daisuke Ishiwatari will come to E3 next year and you can ask him then,” Kidooka shared with us.

Arc System Works is preparing to move on to the next generation and it might be with Guilty Gear. “Currently, we are brainstorming,” Kidooka said to Siliconera. “Guilty Gear Xrd is a title we’re considering to bring to the next generation.”

Kidooka added that Arc System Works are confirmed to be a PlayStation 4 developer.

  • I sort of figured. I’ve seen some reaaally nice anime-style cel shading on the PS3 but nothing of this caliber.

    • MrTyrant

SRW 2nd OG may be similar, HD cell shading in a 2d plane and of course those amazing animations. Still it seems hard to do something like this for a fighting game, for me it’s a logical decision to go for the next generation.

      • Ah, I wasn’t even aware there was an SRW game coming to PS3, I’ll have to take a look at it

        • Well, SRW OGs2 has been released back in November. No word of a localization at this moment, but Operation Hotblood is currently fighting for it.

    • ndjn3979

I think this is definitely doable on PS3.

      • Tre W

It more than likely is. Between the fact that it’s confirmed to be on UE3 and the arcade hardware being Sega RingEdge 2 (of which, the only other noticeable games are the likes of Under Night InBirth) and the fact that ASW likely won’t make an immediate jump to next gen (nor force their smaller, niche-like audience to jump with them)? I could see them at least starting the series off on the PS3, and then possibly moving the series over to the PS4 by the time we start talking about the game’s first legit expansion.

  • Astrotrain

I hope they consider release it in both PS3/PS4.

    • Shane Guidaboni

I feel like if the PS3 can run a game like Last of Us, then it could definitely run this.

    • Ninastars

ASW always likes to put Guilty Gear on as many platforms as possible. I’m thinking what he means here isn’t that it’s being considered just for next gen but that it’s being considered to be put to next gen on top of a current generation release.

  • MrTyrant

I already have my fighting game for the next generation. Let’s ROCK!

    • DesmaX

      • Musashi234

        DUEL 1

        • XiaomuArisu

          Let´s Rock!

  • Eder García

according to an Epic Games employee, Xrd uses Unreal Engine 3, so this game will not be next gen console exclusive, it will be on current gen consoles (except WiiU?) as well imo

  • Go2hell66

Do they really need to move it onto next gen platforms? The sega arcade machine theyre developing it for has already had games ported to current gen platforms hasnt it? Seems a bit unnecessary to me

    • Ben Brocka

With neither the Xbox 1 or PS4 supporting last-gen games it seems like a bad plan to only release on last gen stuff by the time this will release. People will want games for their new system and some may have even traded in their old consoles. I’ll keep my PS3 for sure, but I’d personally rather have this on PS4.

      • Tre W

On the other hand, you’re assuming that the general gaming public will be that eager (or have the money) to make jump to next gen. It likely won’t be the case that the PS4 will have that substantial a base for ASW to sell their game to for upwards of a year or more. Even more so for Japan (Guilty Gear’s main audience), where the portable market clearly outclasses the console market.

The PS4 will likely see a port of Xrd (or an obvious expansion/upgrade) sooner or later. But much like with the PS2/PS3 transition, I could see ASW taking their sweet time and release games for current-gen hardware for a number of years more. Let’s not forget that BB didn’t debut on the PS3/360 until 3-4 years after those consoles were out; all while ASW was just fine pushing out more GG revisions for the PS2 (and later, Wii).

Plus, the last word from Mori (BlazBlue producer) was that he wanted to be the one to introduce a new “PS4-level” fighting game, after he was finished with BB. I would think the personnel closer to actual game development would have a bit more insight on what may be next for the company than a president on the corporate level…

        • colorblindnightmare

Thank you for speaking truthfully while NOT hard flaming.

  • konsama

Now i got 2 reasons to get a PS4, KEEP EM COMING!

    • The-Beast

      Only 2? I’ve got at least 20.

      • konsama

Well, i’m only interested in games, so only 2 reasons.

Metal Gear 5 and this one. :P

        • Kenneth Richardson

Only MG5 will also be on Xbox One, and this game is unlikely to be a PS4 exclusive.

Edit: just realized how awkward this sounded, I’m trying to say that those two titles (MGS5 an possibly GGX) could also form reasons to get an Xbox One.

          • phangtom

Judging by the way Blazblue has gone, who knows. Don’t think the Xbox One is going to do great when the 360 struggled to sell over there.

          • konsama

Tho, no idea why you thought i would be interested in that other console lol. :P

          • Kenneth Richardson

mentioned a multiplatform game and a potentially multiplatform game as your only two reasons for getting the PS4. If those are really your only reasons, then I don’t see why you wouldn’t be just as happy with the Xbox One, if that makes any snese.

        • The-Beast

I’m talking about the games too : MGS 5, FF XV, FFXIV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Infamous SS, Killzone ShadowFall, Watch Dogs, the next God of War, Drive Club, hohokun, TC the Division, Knack and I could go on. There’s plenty of games to look forward on the PS4, and with no restrictive politics.

          • Alexander Marquis Starkey

I’m sorry but Drive Club fell off after I saw the crew.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

I think they should do it. I noticed some frame rate issues in the trailer. They can smooth it out on PS4.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

No thats youtube being unable to run the 60fps version

    • Kelohmello

Never trust a video uploaded on youtube to give you a good idea of framerates at all.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Go watch it on Nico Nico. But then you have a bunch of words flying all over your screen

        • Kelohmello

Not like you can’t turn that off though.

          • You can. Wouldn’t have watched any other Nico video otherwise (especially having watched Fate/Zero). I believe you ought to have an account to use that option for its players.

  • the_rain

    Yeah it’s back!

  • Godmars

I miss something and there’s no TGS? Can’t show anything there?

  • French

    Sol looks weird

  • disqus_VYqqwQ8BRH

With No Ridger Racer entry at lauch for the PS4 & in my personal opinion a load of rubbish lauch titles for the PS4 this would be most welcomed as a beat em up fan

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Guilty gear isnt a beat em up. Get your genres straight

      • Haseyo

Yeah I was about to say. Fighter =/= Beat ‘Em Up at all.

      • Depends on the Country. Here we say Beat em ups to fighters and actual beat em ups. Does it make sense? Not really, but that’s how it is standardized.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Beat em ups are side scrolling action games… they’ve evolved into hack and slash games like DMC

          • I know very well what they are, don’t worry. What I’m saying is it can have different meanings in different cultures.

      • Richard N

In Europe, fighters are referred to as Beat em ups. Get your culture sensitivity straight.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Im German so you may want to go get your shit straight while I partake in enjoying Chronicles of Mystara(waiting for this one) and Code of Princess which are ACTUAL Beat em ups. Go find a shmup to play.

          • 古戸ヱリカ

Oh! Oh! Play Twinbee! That’s a good one!

          • Richard N

That’s nice, doesn’t mean you represent all other Europeans, since many of them still refer to the games as “beat em ups.” A simple google search will show how often that term is still used.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

I could give a bats class about the terms usage. Incorrect speech is incorrect terminology. Too many dont understand the concept of speaking properly. They dont have any grasp for it. So SnarkLark Im gonna teach you a lesson in writing. When you speak consider your audience. Do I use that terminology? No and neither do many.Protocal dictates that you dont refer to fighting games as beat em ups when you are speaking to me. Your foolishness has confused many ‘a lads I’ve had to set straight ye smarmy cracker jack!!

          • Richard N

And what if said person doesn’t know the terminology? Maybe they’re new to the scene and still fully say “False Roman Cancel” instead of just simply saying “FRC” or they say “push down, down right, and forward punch” instead of “236 Fierce.” Hell people often refer to “hand trucks” as “dollys.”

I understand there’s a proper term for the genre and terminology in general, but that doesn’t mean everyone knows it. If someone refers to fighting games as a beat em up, it’s pretty easy to assume they mean fighter. We don’t need to be pricks about it.

Anyway, we’re arguing about terminology on a video game website. I’m quitting here. Feel free to deem yourself the winner of our silly debate.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Good call. I get testy when people try and jack my thunder

          • It’s a RPG because we are role playing a character that fights. I win

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

On in Overture do you win by that dying lights Holy Order

        • Armane

I’m not sure about mainland Europe (being from the UK), but with my limited anecdotal evidence, I find people who tend to refer to fighters as BEUs either aren’t fluent enough in game genres to make the correct genre distinctions or grew up in arcades where the scene didn’t differentiate – most likely out of habit (as BEUs were pretty big back in the day before SF2 et al).

  • Yan Zhao

E3…2014? This makes me sad. Its not even a release date then, its still gona be a work in progress by then. What a downer.

  • May I hope to play Guilty Gear on My Wii U :C?

    • Oniros

Accent Core was on Wii so who knows.

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

They said next gen, which Wii U is playing catch up. Great system, just so few games on Wii U.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Leave a message… WiiU is next gen. Tell me does your Xbone need all that fallacious cloud powwaaaa?

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

The Wii U’s processing power is barely more powerful than the PS3.

          Wii U Hardware
CPU: Tri Core 1.24 Ghz(Kindle Fire HD has a Quad Core with more power and its a tablet).
GPU: AMD R700 Equivalent(Which came out in 2008) Clocked at 550 Mhz
RAM: 2GB of DDR3, 1GB reserved for OS.(Cell Phones have close to 2GB on average now).
Storage: 8GB or 32GB, My phone has as much.

          PS3 Hardware
          CPU: 3.2Ghz Single Core
GPU: Nvidia G70 Equivalent Clocked at 550Mhz
          RAM: 256MB
          Storage: 250GB, upgradeable to 2TB.

          PS4 Hardware
CPU: AMD x86-64 Jaguar 8 Core at 3.4Ghz
GPU: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7870 Equivalent clocked at 1.84Ghz
          RAM: 8Gb of GDDR5
Storage: 500GB with upgradeable to 2 TB.

So as you can see, it is anything but Next Gen…
          Go home fanboy.

          • Ni

Hardware doesn’t mean anything when we talk about generations, dude. Generation is the time the console got released

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

He doesnt even get the fact that those specs dont even tell what the console is capable of.

          • Spirit Macardi

Exactly. It’s not about raw specs, it’s about how well those individual parts can be made to work together. Just look at how much an understanding of the hardware aided the PS2 in its lifetime, even though it was technically “underpowered” when compared to the Gamecube and Xbox.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Oh, I didn’t realize we were playing the semantics
game…. Actually they do, if you know anything about hardware.
I own a Wii U and love MH3U on it, but games still look like PS3 games. That’s because it is essentially a modern PS3 that doesn’t seem to produce heat some how. The hardware’s limitations are obvious on games for PC and 360/PS3 now. Console games can’t keep up because they’re too powerful for the consoles. While Wii U being slightly more powerful will mean it might be less time till it gets left in the dust, it will still lose out on next gen games.
As for PS2 era, games on GC and Xbox looked smoother, loaded faster and overall ran better. This is what you will see with multiplatform games where one system is significantly weaker.
Now I doubt the Wii U would have trouble running GGXrd.

By down voting you are only showing your ignorance of technology. I relish that people on here talk out their asses so much and argue with you when you prove them wrong with facts and sources to support your claims.

            Drown in your ignorance :)

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

You’re a really cheap replacement for Rorschach you know that? Dismissive attitude. I know enough about how things work, you however are strangely rutted in your preconceived notions. You need some perspective. I’ve seen more of what this machine is capable of than you have.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

    • I hope so too, cause i have no plans on getting the other next gens except the wii u. They seem so meh right now

  • Shadowman

Sweet! Now all we need is a release date.

  • z_merquise

I wonder when we’ll see updates on this game like character reveals. It’s been weeks since the first trailer was shown and no updates about the game since.

I think this game is under development for arcades first. Do TGS usually show arcade games too? Because I’m looking forward to see more of this game and it would suck if it took a long while for us to see new info for this game.

    • puchinri

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen an arcade game or two at TGS. The shooting game with the aliens and bunnies that was cute (and featured U.N. Owen) was one I remember specifically.

      • z_merquise

I wish they show something at TGS too. The long wait until E3 2014 may kill the hype on this game.

So maybe what they meant is that console-related news for the game is at E3 but anything like gameplay mechanics or character reveals can be shown from time to time. Or that’s what I’m hoping at least.

        • puchinri

It would be very nice~. I feel like there’d be a low chance of it happening, but we can certainly hope!

  • xAKUM3TSUx

    This news is totally “ROMANTIC!”

  • Oniros

Please be cross-gen, please be cross-gen…

  • Göran Isacson

Man, if they’re so far off presenting anything playable that they’re not even going to show anything at TGS, the wait will REALLY be excruciating. I do hope they can at least give us small tidbits, like planned roster and so on… I also wonder what the new characters will be like, or if there will even be an new characters and what part in the storyline they will play. Perhaps another assassin under Venoms command? Another Holy Order knight? Or maybe President Gabriel of Zepp will enter the frontlines? Who knows!

  • Shane Guidaboni

Aw man. Looks like I HAVE to get a PS4 now. Not that’s a bad thing, but still.

  • I’m guessing this will be yet another game that’s released on both generations. We’ll probably see a lot of those over the next couple years.

    • Solomon_Kano

Probably not. Japanese devs aren’t really keen on cross-gen development. They typically pick one set of platforms and stick with it.

  • Pfantzypantz

    PC please…

  • Solomon_Kano

  • venomryu

    dual one!

  • Now I have 4 reason to get a PS4, Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XV and this! :D

    • LuciferD666

Including Xbox One’s restrictions. I’m in the same boat =)

      • Yeah, never liked the original xbox, this one seems to have lost attractive to its own fans.

  • Be an Nintendo wii u game and win me forever!

  • Lightthrower

Guilty Gear Xrd (3rd), hence GG: XXX. Love it!

  • DejWoSWK

Not surprising at all…It is obvious current gen would not handle the awesomeness of new Guilty Gear.

  • colorblindnightmare

I wonder if it being an unreal engine 3 based game would work well on ps4? Either way i’ll buy this game and Tyrant Rave til my stick breaks from the awesome.
