Shadow The Hedgehog Explodes Onto PS2 Classics

By Spencer . June 18, 2013 . 11:51pm

imageI don’t know if I would call Shadow the Hedgehog a "classic." The idea of turning Sonic the Hedgehog into a gun action game felt like a disconnect from all of the other games in the series. Sure, Sonic has always had an attitude, but Shadow the Hedgehog tried too hard to be edgy.

But, hey if you liked Shadow the Hedgehog you can get it for PlayStation 3 via a PlayStation Network download. Sega just re-released Shadow the Hedgehog for 1,200 yen as a PS2 Classic in Japan.

I played the “Last Story” segment of the game. It was my first time playing Shadow the Hedgehog… anyways the CGI cutscenes during the credits repeat after a while lol

  • If we were to have a pedestal for a game that exemplifies forced and tedious replayability, it would have to be this one.

    • Göran Isacson

Man, that was a pretty good rewiever. Subscribed to that guy… and laughed madly at the troll that showed up, that Gligar13 character. I have not seen a more obvious troll channel in YEARS.

      • Indeed. And the asspie hates Pokemon despite wearing related avatar. Obvious troll right there. And glad you enjoy the video. =)

  • Lucky_x

    But why?

    • TheExile285

For the hardcore Shadow fans? Actually no, that can’t be right since I fall into that category and would not buy this game again unless I was paid at a profit.

      • Cluster_M

think I could fall into that category.

After all, Shadow the Hedgehog when the first game I ever played when I was a kid…

    • Gyro Zeppeli

Same reason they put up Virtual On Marz.

  • TheExile285

How about a remake so they can fix everything?

  • Rishtopher

I played this game. I think I even liked it. That said, “classic” is kind of pushing it… Also, why did he need guns or vehicles? I seriously cannot understand that. He can shoot bolts of lightning (chaos?) out of his hands and his shoes enable him to go as fast as Sonic.

    • grevlinghore

Yup. It makes no sense ><

  • Kawashima

It was an ok game. I kinda liked the branching storylines and the dark atmosphere of the story. Didn’t really need guns, spent most of the time homing attacking or running stuff over in vehicles.

    -Sonic Adventure Re-released

    -Sonic Adventure 2 Battle Re-released

    -Shadow The Hedgehog Re-released

-Hunnid-P working on new music for a Sonic game

    It’s happening guys!

  • Warboss Aohd

why not Okage: Shadow King instead?

    • Tatsuya1221

The ps3 has an emulator for the ps2 in it, to release okage, they would need to recode the game to work on another system, sucks i agree but it’s not as simple as a rerelease.

    • BadenBadenPrinny

      You just made me weep ;_;

  • grevlinghore

The game felt weird and cheezy as fuck, but I did love some of the stages such as Cryptic Castle, the theme-park place and the one on the ARK where stuff was falling down all the time :>

  • HavocAccelerator

Gameplay-wise, Shadow the Hedgehog was pretty much the same as the other 3D Sonics of that time, so I don’t think “gun action game” is very accurate. It just happens to have guns on top of the usual Sonic stuff. That aside, the game did fall flat in a few regards, but it had some fun parts.

  • itsameluigi1290

Cool. Too bad I already re-bought it on GCN recently and my PS3 just died… recently >.< (Not that it's out in America anyway but still)

  • Shady Shariest

This game was awesome…People are too bitchy about it :/

  • Joshua Myers

Game was good first sonic game i ever played

  • Göran Isacson

Can’t say I’m interested- I didn’t give this game THAT many attempts, but the sequence I did play just controlled so finicky it turned me off the rest of the game.

  • Kaihedgie

Are you all gonna go get that damn fourth Chaos Emerald? :V

  • Tyler Beale

Um…Okay? Why Shadow the Hedgehog? Why not Sonic Heroes instead (though it runs like shit)? Better yet, why Japan?

  • DCBlackbird

I didn’t despise this game I really liked the soundtrack and all but goddamn this game was uber easy. I really disliked how some maps we’re recycled and I didn’t care to much for the whole gun aspect it took out much of the fun.

  • GuyAlpha

I thought we buried this skeleton.

  • vileBrenman

Omg I remember when I got this game for my birthday! I was like ten years old and i thought it was so bad ass mostly because they gave him guns lol. Well that and he cursed. “Where’s that Damn chaos emerald?!” I still listen to the sound track from time to time though

  • Solomon_Kano

I remember in elementary school my friend kept trying to get me to play this and I was like noooooo lol.

  • Ah, the bastard child of Sonic Adventure 2. You’re corny and your ending doesn’t make any frickin’ sense, but you still felt more like a worthy successor to the Adventure games than Heroes ever will.

  • RisukuAozora

Sure it was a classic… a classic disaster that was followed up by a hurricane called SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (2006).

  • Christopher Nunes

    I love this game! ^_^

Though I still have it for the Gamecube, I thought Shadow’s first game was pretty amazing… could use a bit more touch-up… but I wouldn’t really call it a “Sonic” game seeing as Shadow is the main character here and it’s his game.

Sure it’s part of the Sonic universe and Sonic’s in it, but it’s all about Shadow and showing how different he is and they wanted to experiment with a darker atmosphere for the character and game.

  • It’s some kinda “classic”, all right.

  • I used to love this game when I was little, but I don’t know if it would be considered a classic. *thinks* hmmm… oh well, I’ll just get this if I get some money I have nothing to spent on :p

  • AuraGuyChris

Giving a gun to a hedgehog is suddenly relevant again.

  • Spirit Macardi

The only truly good thing about this game was that Dan Green and Mike Pollock were in it. Though I suppose that goes without saying.

I guess I can’t really be surprised, considering those Dora games were somehow considered “Classics” as well. Come on though, there’s games far more deserving of being on this service: The Atelier Iris trilogy, Ar Tonelico 1 and 2, Dark Cloud 1 and 2, the entire Onimusha series, Klonoa 2, any SMT title.

You mean to tell me that great games like those are a lower priority when it comes to digital preservation?

    • Solomon_Kano

I believe there’s actually a rights hold up when it comes to Onimusha. The first 3 anyway. Had to do with the actors’ likenesses being used, though Dawn of Dreams obviously wouldn’t have that problem. At the least, it’d be nice to see DoD.

As for Nocturne, Ghostlight’s been trying to get Nocturne up on PSN in Europe and they’ve said it’s difficult to get working. And the DDS games both run on Nocturne’s engine, so I’d guess Raidou does as well. So they’re probably all tough to up.

The rest though, who knows? You’d think we’d have gotten the Dark Cloud games at least, as those are Sony’s own IP. Rogue Galaxy would be real nice too…

  • Ben Sylvia

Well it DID have some good music.

  • Phantom R

This game is my guilty pleasure. SHOULDN’T have been a Sonic game though, but how else would it have sold?

Also if they ever make a Sonic games with guns again it needs to be cartoony, like guns that shoot our rings and use them as ammo without everything being violent or dark. Hell, the Shadow game could have been like that.
