Corpse Party’s Anime Adaptation Is Not For The Squeamish

By Spencer . July 1, 2013 . 2:11am

Given how graphic Corpse Party’s text descriptions are the horror game series isn’t for the squeamish. The anime adaptation Corpse Party: Tortured Souls appears to be just as graphic and it looks like Mages isn’t going to cut any of the grisly scenes out. Those poor students actually think they can escape the cursed school in the beginning…

After the success with Corpse Party for PSP, Mages expanded on the series with internally developed follow ups like Corpse Party: Book of Shadows and the upcoming Corpse Party game for Vita. Meanwhile, GrisGris (now known as Grindhouse) developed Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient.

oh man these ova’s are gonna be amazing, can’t freaking wait

    and so much for censoring…

  • Virevolte

    This trailer made me cry.

…I’m still interested by the games but I risk to scream a lot while playing.

    • Raze

      Just try and play it…

      It’s horror…And you should be scared…

Your scream worth every money you spend for this…

    • Bur

It’s good, so play it. Just… just maybe have a bucket or something to puke in now and then.

    • Eilanzer

use a headphone and play at night ^^

      • MXC

You mean use headphones and play at night! If you dont play with headphones or earbuds, you’re doing it wrong!

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

    Suddenly Higurashi is tame.

    • Go2hell66

this makes higurashi look like a kids educational show

    • DyLaN

I wonder will the gore in CP:TS OVA top Blood-C or Another….

      How gorrific is Higurashi again?

      • Juan Andrés Valencia

A small girl sticks a knife’s handle into a door or wall and then proceeds to smash her head repeatedly into the blade complete with blood spatter everywhere and cringe worthy sound effects. Also… fingernails get ripped off fingers and many other horrifying and utterly disgusting stuff.

        • X_Bacon

Just imagining it made me cringe. Not sure if I should watch these videos…

          • Virevolte

            Let’s not…. =(

      • Go2hell66

Lol you think Blood-C and Another are bad!?

        try watching Gyo

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

Isn’t Gyo from Junji Ito? The guy who’s main inspiration is fricking Hideshi Hino? :P

          • Go2hell66

i have no idea, but its pretty messed up

        • DyLaN

I did watch the first half of it but so far all I see is THE WALKING SHARK. I did read the description for the manga and eewwwwww.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

Junji Ito is a genius and he is arguably the best horror manga writer out there. Uzumaki and Gyo are fucking amazing.

Hideshi Hino comes close with Panorama Of Hell.

      • Wappuli

Haven’t seen Blood-C but this trailer alone tops Another.

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

It’s still tamer than Genocyber and Elfen Lied :P

  • Holy shit that was amazing! It was goreriffic! =^_^=

  • DyLaN

O______O I want but at the same time I’m scared….

    • Aoshi00

I haven’t played the Corpse Party games, but this is much more graphic, twisted, and grotesque than anything they cut from Tomb Raider and the Last of Us (there Joel only crushing the heads of the Infected who aren’t humans anymore, desperate to fight and survive and violence not gratuitous), really strange standards for gore in anime and games in Jpn.. even Jpn gamers are puzzled how diff. CERO Z games are censored..

If these shows are aired at late night, don’t wanna watching them before going to sleep, the images would haunt me :(… now I appreciate how tastefully the brain experiment scene was adapted in the new Hunter x Hunter Chimera Ant anime, cruel and shocking yet not disgusting, still faithful to the manga and pushing the limit of a morning show..

  • Abysswalker90

I find horror anime with an overly anime-ish style like this one and Higurashi to be….kind of silly looking.

  • X_Bacon

    So much gorn.

  • Kuraio

I’ve only played the first one on PSP.
Can I watch this trailer without having seen the “Missing Footage” OVA or having played the sequel “Book of Shadows”?

    • s07195

The missing footage is about just before the first game, so it’s fine.

    • DyLaN

You can. Its an adaptation of the 1st game so I think you won’t be spoiled. The MF OVA is a prequel set the night be4 the 1st game and just a bit of censored gore.

    • Kuraio

      Thanks all.
      Just watched it ^^

    • Daru Titor

Yeah, the Missing Footage is just the week up to the culture fes.

ends with them going to school(theirs, not heavenly host).

BoS isn’t req’d either, since it retells some HH stories and gives us some new ones.

  • Amagidyne

Awesome, I just recently finished the first Corpse Party on my PSP, so I’ll definitely be checking this out.

    • Out of curiosity: Will you be playing BoS soon?

      • Amagidyne

I’m hoping to, just a question of scraping up the money. It looks SUPER interesting though.

        • Just a heads up in case you didn’t know, but the way you “play” it is quite different.
Though that’s most likely not going to stop you, since the events are even more gripping than before. Mmmm delicious!

          • Amagidyne

Yeah, I’m aware, I checked it out. I actually like the look of the playstyle of BoS so I’m not complaining~!

    • Same here, i got a bad ending knowing i did something wrong in chapter 5 and imm ahave to play it again (knowing this chapter was confusing as hell ><)

      • Amagidyne

I got a bad ending for chapter 5 the first time I played through it too, it was hella tricky to finally get the true ending for it. Saying that though, after I finished it, I went back around and got all the bad endings for the hell of it, so that was just time saved in a way.

  • ChiffonCake

Damn, an anime? Guess I’ll have to play the game soon, then.

    Looking forward to it!

  • Spider-Man

Breast jiggle at the 1:08-1:10 mark. Not surprised But after watching all sorts of gory anime like Another, Elfen Lied, Higurashi, etc, this is the first time I put down my food (eating spaghetti while seeing organs/blood is a bad combo with gore I see) while watching gory anime. I went back to eating after, but still. This is going to be a great watch.

    • RichyGaming

      Like a bawss

  • Sardorim

I’m still hoping against hope for Happy End for Naomi even if the odds are stacked against her so severely.

    • Bur

I’ll hope with you. …I mean, it can’t get any worse. …right?

      • Sardorim

After reading corpse party musume(Don’t if you haven’t. Please…) I know things can get really bad. That ending… Poor Naomi never caught a break.

But again if you haven’t it than DON’T! It will ruin Corpse Party for the faint of heart and even the most resolute will not be unchanged for the worse by how bad it is.

I mean seriously, they have her confess to Satoshi and they end up together at the end or so you think… Than the last three chapters. WTF!

        • Bur

I will head your warning and avoid this at all costs.

        • RichyGaming

Corpse Party Musume showed a lot of….ecchi. I’m not even 25% done with CP book of shadows so I don’t know what the ending is, I don’t really want to know. But is it the same ending as Musume?

          • Sardorim

Book of Shadows isn’t bad and is canon while Musume is just a very horrid spin off. The person that wrote it up must have REALLY hated Naomi.

        • Brandonmkii

That Naomi pile made that manga for me.

  • RichyGaming

    Looks kawaii.

    • Damarius Wingfield

      *Looks at you stupid*…..

  • artemisthemp

Hopefully will lead to a Anime of Corpse Party

  • Eilanzer

i just love how the good ending in this gonna be a “not so good ending taste in the mouth” XD

  • JustThisOne

I’m down! *__* I’ve been waiting for something like this.

  • JNT

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha man, that was graphic!

And weaksauce and a terrible creative choice!

Okay so I’m being more than a little facetious and exaggarating in order to stoke peoples “U MAD” nerve, but come on, the GOOD part about Corpse Party was that we couldn’t see much of the gruesomeness. It was implied, described, left to our gruesome imaginations. Anyone remember Book of Shadows? And how that was nowhere near as atmospheric, interesting or riveting as the original BUT upped the gore and annoying characters significantly? Because I do, and I didn’t like it, and the presence of massive amounts of INYOURFACEGOOOOOOORRRRNNNNNNNN is making me throw massive amounts of sideye on this here show.

Not saying it can’t be done well! Not saying that anime, being more than a fair bit more oriented towards visual stuff and showing instead of telling can’t get away with showing brutal stuff instead of just alluding to it. But I’m saying that for me, personally, too much splatter makes me queasy at worst, darkly amused at best, but the original Corpse Party made me genuinely scared. This here project does not look like it will reach them lofty heights.

    • Brandonmkii

“the GOOD part about Corpse Party was that we couldn’t see much of the gruesomeness”

I beg to differ good sir. BRING ON THE GORE.

      • Göran Isacson

Then differ we unfortunately shall. I always associate an upswing in shown and displayed gore with a downswing in intelligent and compelling writing and characters, as there seems to be only room for one or the other in horror projects for some sad reason (again, see Book of Shadows).

        • Brandonmkii

I don’t see how it’s detracting from the story. It’s the original Corpse Party, in anime form. All the gore I saw in that trailer was stuff that more or less happens in the game. Reading about it is the same as watching it, to me, in terms of scare factor.

          • Göran Isacson

I think it will depend on how it’s presented. If the anime skimps out on plot and showing us character relationships in order to dedicate more time to having the camera focus on gore and guts and suffering, then I think the story will suffer for it even if it is in most other aspects “the same”.

True, the original Corpse Party DID include all those elements but they were balanced out by character moments, slow build-up and, this is important, BEING RARE. The bloody stuff was what we got after many a long stage of walking around, growing gradually more and more fearful of our surroundings. Here it seems like they’re showing it in our faces with the very first trailer, and it makes me hope they don’t just think that going over the top with gore is what made people fans of Corpse Party. The gore was the punch in the gut after a long, slow period of teasing. It wasn’t being pelted with offal with every step you took. That is what I fear this will become, an attempt to make it faster-paced and more visually disgusting, at the expense of atmosphere and writing.

  • Brion Valkerion

Cant wait, this game was a heck of a surprise, so hopefully the anime is as good.

  • Alexander Aubert

so i don’t have to buy the blu-ray version for the uncensored version? great!

  • s07195

So when IS it coming out?

  • ShadowDivz

Man, since anime has been kinda moe centric i clicked play on the trailer expecting it to be “okay” at best.
Then i watched the damn thing and….. O_O.

Also, anyone else notice the girl who hanged herself also wet herself?

  • Kite

I hope the BD’s are uncut this time >.>
