Steins;Gate Is Coming To The West

By Ishaan . July 5, 2013 . 10:51pm

Yes, the rumours are true—Steins;Gate is coming to the West. JAST USA just announced that they will be publishing the visual novel in English, at their ongoing panel at Anime Expo.

We’ll have more news on the game as it is made available.

Better late than never I guess.

    • Wait what

Considering it’s JAST USA, and the “speed” at which their previously announced Nitro+ titles came out at after being announced in 2009… it’s probably still going to be another three years until it’s released.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like VNs but i have a slight interest in it because of 5pb. in Neptunia
But it is yet another eroge VN right?

    • Tenoko

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

This is one of the best VN’s ever. EVER.

      • FlamingFirewire

        Right next to Ever17 :)

    • Marche90

It’s a VN, but this one has never had erotic content on it (first platform it was released was the 360, actually). And yeah, it’s pretty good

    • Raze

      It’s a sci-fi VN

      No Erotic scene…

      There is romance though…

    • JazzyMan123

No ero (though there are some fan-service scenes), seeing how it was released on the 360 from the get-go.

  • JazzyMan123

Already finished it (in Chinese). Simply one of the best VNs ever, so enjoy y’all! :)

Oh, and if Jast really wants this to really be successful, they’d be wise to gun for a Steam release.

  • Curan_Altea

Excuse me while I squee like a girl for about 5 minutes.

    • EtherealEarth

Just post this to say that your profile picture of Zero is just priceless. XD
      I love it!

      • Curan_Altea

        Thanks, I appreciate it.

  • Solomon_Kano

Is this real life? Oh my.

Glad I held off on watching the anime.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Nuuuuu watch it.

      • Solomon_Kano

After I play the VN. Probably wouldn’t play it if I knew the story already, to be honest.

        • You better watch the movie once you finished the novel, since it’s kinda a sequel for SG

          • Solomon_Kano

            Oh? Will do.

    • 324234

Although the anime is really faithful and mirrors the plot to perfection, I’d also recommend watching it before playing. Seeing it in motion, and the -far- better voice acting (same cast though, I believe) is a lot more effective and enjoyable way to experience it. Then, play the VN to see all the alternate routes the story can take.

      • Solomon_Kano

I’ll do it in reverse. If I know the main gist of the story, I likely wouldn’t care to still play the VN.

      • michel

I watched the anime, but right now I feel that I somewhat spoiled the game… :(

      • Wappuli

I would actually recommend doing the opposite, watch anime only if you really liked the VN.
There are some minor and one quite big (which really annoyed me) change in the anime adaptation and those kinda make it non-canon.

      • Aoshi00

Hm.. if there are those who have not watched the anime yet, I would say it’s great to play the game first, because the story would lose a lot of impact if you already know what is going to happen. I finished playing S;N first before watching the anime as well. While the anime was an exceptional adaptation no doubt (especially for R;N because the game was only so-so), the game really made my heart pound at various points, I was intrigued by the more detailed scientific explanation as well. And since player is in the shoes of Okabe, it was a more immersive experience as you are controlling the fate of others and the butterfly effect was scary, you feel the anxiety and sadness first hand.. what little good intentioned change you made could result in unintended dire consequences. One’s not watching, but feeling.. truly an emotional roller coaster for me..

Of course the anime was better in terms of animation. The seiyuu cast is indeed the same. I wouldn’t say one performance is better, but they are different media. The anime’s speed was faster in general (Mayuri spoke slower in the game, the rest of the cast sound pretty much the same to me).

I know it’s by JAST, so it’s PC only.. really wish it would’ve been on PS3.. since I have the other S;N games on 360.. really prefer playing VNs on consoles. And I really like S;N because the story was so shocking, yet did not depend on ero or gore at all like most other PC VNs, just plain good story-telling.

    • Go2hell66

No you have to watch it!

    • Aoshi00

It’s amazing you held off for so long. While the anime was a really good adaptation, you’re right, it would’ve been hard to play the game if you are already spoiled the story. Part of the amazing experience of the game was the suspense. The scientific and time traveling concepts were explained in more details. Player is also more invested into the story because you are in the shoes of Okabe (and he’s not a silent protagonist like in many other VNs). The anime was amazing, but the game was the best VN ever, one of the most heart wrenching and best time traveling stories. It’s like the Last of Us or the Walking Dead game, you can’t be spoiled the story before playing and experiencing for yourself :)

I played the game first before watching the anime too for Robotics;Note For R;N, because the anime improved so much on the game, there’s really no point to play at all once you’ve watched the anime.. but unlike R;N, they are bits of S;N game that weren’t covered in the anime.

Though I really wish this to be a console release because I have all the S;N games on 360.. otherwise I would definitely play this again in Eng on PS3 and get all the trophies :)

If PC is the only option, people still shouldn’t miss this. I have to say this is a bit late though.. a lot of people have already watched the anime, and the experience will not feel the same if they already know what’s going to happen in the story. My heart pounded so much when I was playing the game, no kidding, tears shed too :)

      • Solomon_Kano

It took a whole lot of willpower to not watch the anime when everybody was raving about it haha. Glad to hear I’ll be fine if I just watch R;N though.

I’d have hoped for a PS3 release as well, but I’m happy to see it at all. And hell, I NEVER play anything on my PC. So this has been a long time coming. Ready to see what everybody’s been talking about.

  • Kevin Tan

I get to experience the original form of the show I loved?! YES, YES!

  • DyLaN

Cool. Hope we get R;N too.

  • Guest

I alredy played it and I’m studying Japanese to play Senkei Kousoku no Phenogram, but this news is wow O_O.

  • AndromedaFlame

However, is there any chance that we’ll see a translation of either of the portable versions of the game? (PSP or Vita)

    • JazzyMan123

Jast doesn’t do consoles or portables so probably not.

  • pimpalicious

Awesome. I was thinking of playing it again but now I will wait and buy the official english release.

  • Good on them. Though I have to imagine people will never stop asking them when it will be coming out :V

    (I know that pain)

  • PoweredByHentai

By the way, the character designer, huke, is at Anime Expo.

I am trying to get an autograph from huke, preferably on one of his artbooks.

    • Curan_Altea

      Good luck. I mean it.

    • Raltrios

Go for it! I managed to get Vic Mignogna to sign both of my FMA Movies at the Winnipeg Comic Con last year. It feels good, but the experience actually wasn’t much…I was more talking to his manager than to him, so it felt hollow…such is life.

      • PoweredByHentai

Today’s line for huke pretty much closed before it even started. The folks who wanted huke’s autograph were basically waiting in line since 8 AM, even though his autograph session at the Good Smile Company booth wasn’t until noon and the general public wasn’t allowed into the Exhibit Hall until 10 AM.

        That was pretty ridiculous.

        • Curan_Altea

Holy crap. I mean, I love his work but still….. That’s a little insane.

          • PoweredByHentai

Yup. What made the usual mad dash for the autograph lines even more absurd in recent years is the whole Premiere Pass thing as an admissions option.

Premiere Pass basically gives you access to front row seats for major events like concerts and contests and whatnot. The real game breaker is that Premiere attendees get to enter the Exhibit Hall before the general public, or at least have priority access over the public.

          • Curan_Altea

What? That sounds kinda unfair. What’s the pricing on those things (and I assume they go quick)?

Haven’t been to AX but would really like to go sometime. Kinda out of the way.

          • PoweredByHentai

Premiere Passes go for 300 bucks or so. Regular 4-day badges start at 40-45 bucks immediately after a recent Anime Expo and bump up in price the closer you get to next year’s Anime Expo.

          • Curan_Altea

Ah, fair enough pricing. For the regular tickets, screw that premiere thing though. That money would go towards the plane ticket.

If I ever get serious about going I’ll keep this in mind, thanks.

    • Kai2591

I wonder how he looks like, that Huke…never seen his picture before.

  • Niyari

    finally. jeez.

  • Neophoton

I normally don’t get hyped over visual novel games, but Steins;Gate is an exception. Maybe we can see some Robotics;Notes getting some overseas love as well?

    • JazzyMan123

Don’t recall Jast ever doing any console releases and R;N doesn’t have a PC port, so probably not.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      • Solomon_Kano

        That a, uh, Sonic VN?

        • JazzyMan123

Another Nitro+ VN actually, Chaos; Head.

          • Solomon_Kano

I know, I was having a bit of fun with his typo.

          • JazzyMan123

Ah, it’s all clear now lol

  • Go2hell66

Better having it on pc than nothing i guess, would be nice if they could bring over the other ports as well though

  • HououinKyouma

I alredy played it and I’m studying Japanese to play Senkei Kousoku no Phenogram, but this news is wow O_O.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

funny since I just started to watch the anime, yay!!!

  • Niyari

i also hope that this will bring back talks about the long lost Chaos;Head Noah project. the tlwiki page was last updated in 2009. lol

  • TiredOfMyOldUsername

With how slow Jast is usually at translating VN it’s hard to get excited for this when we might not be able to play it before 2-3 years and maybe more…

    • M’iau M’iaut

Ya it is hard to believe Peter’s releases exist until they actually show up at your door. So many hopes dashed over the years, but I can’t see him keep doing the standard ‘it is coming’ bs with Steins.

      • TiredOfMyOldUsername

        You might be right.
Steins is pretty big in the west, so maybe they will try harder at releasing it fast.

      • Blick Winkel

The translation is done. Just a little bit of cleanup on the scripts and quite a bit of cleanup on the engine bugs.

    • Ladius

The game is already translated, Blick said the major hurdles could be bugfixing and Nitroplus’s extremely slow (at least going with their previous western releases) QC process.

  • almostautumn

This is amazing news; I’ve always wanted to try some of these next-gen VN’s like Stein and Robotics, and really I couldn’t be happier—

But at the same time, this is probably the worst time they could have planned this. Next-gen is right around the corner, and as I’m already reading people quitting buying current-gen games to pay for their consoles, not to mention that they absolutely won’t be buying last-gen once the new stuff comes out— I mean, this is truly a terrible time to bring a pretty uncertain GENRE, not even the game itself like PD;F but the friggin’ genre itself, to a territory that has largely been hostile toward it for years.

Best of luck to them; I’m very excited no less.

    • Stranger On The Road

If they are releasing the console version, then it will sell since not everyone is dumping the current generation because a new one is coming out. Look at how long the PS2 lasted after the release of the PS3!

But this is JAST, it will most likely by a PC release.

      • JazzyMan123

        It is the PC version.

  • almostautumn

  • ChromeH34rts

*sobs* Miracles do happen!!! I am so happy!!! This totally made my day!! *crosses Steins;gate off wishlist of games to be localised* Perhaps there might be hope for other visual novels..

  • bVork

Man, this will be so good. In 2016 when it’s actually released.

  • DoSHachiko

This is such a nice VN. Super excited to see it come out overseas, since I played the fan-translated version, so can’t wait to play the official translated verision. c:

  • Blick Winkel

S;G translator here. Translation is done and so is basically all the editing. We’re just working out all the bugs. And by we, I mean Nagato. Probably the biggest hurdle now time-wise would be QC from Nitro+.

    • Fenrir

You actually work at JAST USA? I don’t mean to be so leery but anybody can post and claim they’re working at so and so company. But assuming you’re being truthful, any chance we could see Robotic;Notes come to western shores as well? Also any chance of a Steam release for Steins;Gate?

      • JazzyMan123

I don’t recall Jast doing any console releases, which R;N is.

      • Neophoton

Yeah, don’t think R;N is gonna make it over unless if a PC port happens.

        • Blick Winkel

          This is true.

          • Neophoton

So I take it if R;N gets that PC port, you guys would consider it? :)

          • Blick Winkel

Let’s just say that since Steins;Gate 8-bit was essentially a one-man translation project, I’m one of two people that’s been involved with every English SciADV project. And why stop now?
            (rhetorical question)

          • Neophoton

I like the way you think!

      • Blick Winkel

Check my email and then my blog I did the fan translation, which we overhauled. Not to sounds like a salesman (not paid by royalties or anything), but I think the best thing to convince 5pb. is sales.

        • MikelAL93

Will we see an English voice option available seeing that there’s already an English dub for the anime provided by FUNimation? or are the voices in Japanese only?

I’d be cool if the voices are Japanese only, but that’s just me.

          • JazzyMan123

I can’t imagine a full English dub for a 30-50 hr long VN.

          • Romancer Ecclesia

Thanks for the explanation… we really appreciate it!

          • Kafkaesque

I don’t really see it happening for Steins;Gate, but Aksys did do it for Zero Escape.

          • Blick Winkel

I haven’t been told of anything about an English dub, and that would be kind of a pretty important thing for me to know if that was happening, since it would require more localization and adaptation to make the lines and terms match better with the anime. More importantly, it would delay the game even further. It would be nice, though. I did enjoy switching back and forth between Blazblue’s EN and JP voices, but that’s really an extra thing that’s not entirely necessary. The original voices will be available.

        • superdry

Well, I sure hope S;G sells really well to show 5pb that their titles have an audience here in the west.

So, if sales are REALLY good (enough to convince 5pb), even though R;N and the other S;G games are console only – maybe they’ll find a publisher that can license them for the west.

    • Ladius

Just a quick post to express my gratitude for all your great work. I really enjoyed your S;G patch and I will support the official release day one. Also, your IO project is probably my most hyped visual novel fantranslation :)

      • Blick Winkel

Sorry for the delay on my side with I/O. Had to go through senior year of engineering undergrad, and also had to split focus with fixing up S;G. GundamAce couldn’t pick up my slack either because we wanted consistency with who translated which character’s perspective. Thanks for your support.

    • Joey Asagiri

Hey, Do you know if a save file from the game with the translated patch could work with the JastUSA version? It would be nice if I could proceed from the same point without having to skip throught it all.

      • Kilicool64

Most likely not. I heard Steins;Gate’s engine is really, really bad.

      • Blick Winkel

I do know and the answer is unfortunately no. The engine is buggy as hell (our hacker– excuse me, software engineer– is fixing it up so it’ll be less buggy than the Japanese PC release and also look good handling English text). Every time we updated something, part of our trial and error process was to delete our save folder. Overall progress save files -may- work, but any mid-chapter saves definitely won’t. Either way I wouldn’t recommend trying.

    • Junko Enoshima

It’s so cool to know the progress from someone translating the game! :D

Also, is JAST going through the trouble of getting this rated by the ESRB?

      • Blick Winkel

        Not that I know of.

    • enorka miho

Any chance porting them to vita??

      • Blick Winkel

        PC only for now.

    • Christopher DeBono

Since translation and pretty much editing are complete, do you know when pre-orders will begin?

      • Blick Winkel

        Unfortunately, no.

        • Christopher DeBono

Might wanna see if you can talk to JASTUSA and get the pre-orders going then. Pre-order numbers could help convince 5pb about Steam.

    • João Madalena

First of all after playing both Never7 and S;G translations the quality of your work is impressive so a big thanks for allowing me to play those VN. Second I intend to buy this version, so is this going to be digital only? I would prefer a physical copy. Lastly keep up the good work hope I can enjoy your translations for years to come.

      • Blick Winkel

I actually only translated some TIPS for Never7 as a favor to GundamAce before we started working together for I/O. It’s kind of awkward to be listed as a Never7 translator when I honestly haven’t had the time to play through it in English or Japanese.

        • João Madalena

Ah my bad I saw on TLWiki on Translation so I thought you had a bigger role, anyways I’m looking forward for I/O

          • Blick Winkel

Don’t worry about it, I’ll pass on the compliment to GundamAce.

    • Guest

There’s going to be a physical release, right?

    • Qunton C.

Is JAST gonna do the usual physical/digital release?

    • @Blick Winkel, thanks man for all your hard and great work. Have enjoyed your translation with patch but I really want to support the official release. Hope to see S;G in Steam. :)

  • Kai2591

  • Kai2591

it comes with the original Jap voice too! (according to ANN)

  • benhofb

AAAAAAHHH!!! SOMEONE HOLD ME. (if only some of the console versions came over, but its all good; beggars can’t be choosers)

  • Wappuli

Sadly it’s the PC-version so no Hiyoku Renri no Darling, Senkei Kousoku no Phenogram or Robotics;Notes for English speakers.
I might support this but I’m not sure if I want to buy the same game for a 3th time. Will it have a physical release, or does JAST USA even do those?

    • psycho_bandaid

yeah JAST does physical releases. Usually offers a physical + digital bundle as well.

  • DongT

  • psycho_bandaid

    Friggin’ sold!

  • AlexanderPappas

    will buy??

  • SirRichard

Hell of a surprise to wake up to, now let’s see if there’s any way to get it on this end.

  • g4rr3tt

As many here said, they should aim for a Steam release.I know Steam isnt the easiest platform to work with, especially the whole fuss to put a game from a rather “unknown” company in.But in my opinion it will boost the sales since more people will know about it.

    Never the less,great news!

    • Detrimont

apparently that’s what it’s coming out on, so yeah, wish come true i guess

  • Ladius

This is awesome news for anyone interested in the future of visual novels in the western market, I really hope JAST and 5pbNitroplus are able to release the game in a timely fashion and on mainstream outlets like Steam, maybe with an hard copy that is available on more than JList (targeting stores with an high otakuimporters ratio like Playasia, Videogameplus, Archonia and so on would be smart, maybe even Amazon, especially in Europe where niche PC games have hard copies available all the time).

Even having already bought and played the game, I will support it any way I can. Between this and the Cartagra-Kara no Shoujo 2 announcements from Mangagamer my faith in visual novel publishers has been boosted quite a bit.

  • If there is no hard copy to buy with nice bonuses I’m not interested. Don’t care about digital copies at all.

    • Haseyo

This is why we can’t have nice things.

    • British_Otaku

JAST have pretty good record for providing both digital and physical versions of their games. You can even buy both for $5 more than physical versions iirc.

I’m a physical guy too but between having the anime adaptation all over the place and ignoring the source material because digital and just having it all… I’ll take it all.

  • Danwen Huang

Okay I need to calm down. EL PSY CONGROO! Well that failed.

  • Great, now I can’t get this out of my head:

Also: This is one of the most amazing VN announces ever. Huge get for JAST. Between this and MangaGamer’s IG titles, it almost seems like the English VN market is improving.

  • supervamp

    already knew

  • British_Otaku

Hype. Still waiting for the reverse to happen for School Days (FUNimation used to be all about the boobies. >_>

Only watched the first episode, I’ll get back to the anime after playing some of this.

  • vileBrenman

Omg omg This is the choice of Steins Gate! This is so awesome! I hope the bring the vita or ps3 ports!

    • JazzyMan123

Jast doesn’t do console nor portable releases so probably not.

      • vileBrenman

Aww that’s to bad.. But glad it’s getting localized!

        • benhofb

Well, that doesn’t mean that it won’t open up the possibility that the Console versions would come over. Maybe the enormous fan-fare over the PC release would make a console publisher like Aksys, Atlus, or XSEED think about a console localization.

  • Heard good things, I have to get this.

  • Anna Scruton

Finally! Now I don’t have to import it for the Vita!

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Wowy wow wow

  • CirnoLakes

I’ve never been to an Anime Expo.

I wonder where all I’ll be able to buy it?

    • Jesse Thompson

Definitely from the website friend. (~.~):b

  • Lynx

Cool. But what about the first game in the series? I’m pretty sure it hasn’t “released” in the west yet. Releasing just the second seems redundant.

    • JazzyMan123

      Chaos; Head I assume?

Well, to be fair, apart from a few references here and there these “Science series” VNs are pretty standalone.

    • Wappuli

Even though there are some references between games and they share the same world, this is pretty much the “first game”.
There really isn’t any continuation in story between Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes.

      • Lynx

Uh….Except for characters from other works showing up (see R; N) Besides, I like to play stuff in order.

        • Wappuli

I counted those as references, sure Nae has some actual role in Robotics;Notes but it doesn’t really make a difference for the sake of story if you have seen Steins;Gate or not, all other past characters mentioned in Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes are in so small role that that they could as well be nameless.
Importance of Chaos;Head -> Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate -> Robotics;Notes is pretty much the as Triangle Heart -> Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.
Order you play/watch these has absolutely no impact on understanding the story, but if it really is that important to you then it’s your loss and I wont try to convince you any more.

          • Blick Winkel

Basically, the one thing expanded upon through each game is that an American university named Victor Chondria researched the digital manipulation of human memories. Each game uses this tech in a device key to the story and reveals a little more about the university.

  • Aristides

Take my money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Day one, and if you port to consoles and PSP/Vita Day 1 too :P

  • ChiffonCake

  • SupaPhly

but, STILL wating for Chaos;Head, JAST

  • ReidHershel

Hopefully this comes to at least ONE of the four other consoles this game is on.

  • xflame10

    Literally a week after I import it….

  • Raharu95

    Well… this is just fantastic~

  • Anime10121

I dont really play VN’s but EVEN I’m getting this!!!

  • RisukuAozora

    Well this is unexpected.

  • Philip Irwin

I am at a complete and total loss of what to say except…

Thank you JAST. It’s great to see this finally confirmed. Looking forward to a full purchase either later this year or early next year.
