Dragon Ball Z: Battle Of Z’s Four Different Character Types Explained

By Spencer . July 11, 2013 . 7:32pm

Instead of making another Budokai or Raging Blast sequel, the Dragon Ball team developed a team based fighting game called, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z. You can make a team of four characters or fight in an eight player brawl. To find out more about the four character types, we spoke with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z producer Shuhei Sekii.

At the end of the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z trailer we saw Super Saiyan God Goku. How much more powerful is God level Goku compared to Super Saiyan Level 3 Goku?

Shuhei Sekii, Producer: Super Saiyan God Goku is a very important character in the movie [Battle of Gods]. In terms of character balance, I am trying to make God Goku a little bit stronger than the other characters, but we are still working on balance.

There are four types of characters and we are putting more focus on the different types and how they work together. I’d say the balance is more like the style in the Naruto games.

Let’s talk about the four different character types. There is the Fighting type, Ki Blast type, Support type, and Interference type.

If the player picks a fighting style character such as Goku or Nappa, they are very good at attacking enemies close up.

Characters that specialize in ranged attacks like Vegeta and Piccolo, they can move quickly, but their attack power is less than a fighting character.

Kid Gohan is an example of a support type character. They can share energy with other players during online battles. These are small characters like Kid Trunks.

The last type, Interference type, is like Krillin when he uses Solar Flare to make sure other characters doesn’t attack his friends. Tien is another Interference type character.

Is Birus from Battle of the Gods in the game?

Well, that’s kind of a secret, but you might see him!

Sekii stressed Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is really about the four different character types and players will be able to make teams of four when the play online. Some of these fights will be against giant characters like Great Ape Vegeta, for example. The Z Warriors can share Ki energy which a technique tentatively called "Ki Share." That’s where support characters come in and they can heal team members too. The game also has Linked Attacks and Synchronized Attacks, which Sekii explained are designed for players to work together.

Battlefields in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z will be larger than other games and there is a system so players can communicate with each other. While this sounds like Dragon Ball: Zenkai Battle Royale, an arcade game released in 2011, Sekii said this game is made by an entirely different team with a different combat system.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita.

“At the end of the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z trailer we saw Super Saiyan God Goku. How much more powerful is God level Goku compared to Super Saiyan Level 3 Goku?”

That’s seems like a weird dumb question to ask then again has SSJ3 evah seem useful or stay around for long? eh oh well everything is is pretty interesting

    • SSJ3 is a waste of power. Goku has never been able to use that form with enough efficiency.

    • That was a gameplay balance question, like how each form is stronger than another. It’s not a which Goku form is stronger than another.

  • ssj3gokou24

least we know kid trunks is in the game. hint: buu saga!!!!

    • Dinoegg96

In the video where they explain the fighting types, they showed an image where you can see Buu, Cooler, Android 18, Dr. Gero, check it out (at minute 10:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqtQKMSnz-E

“The last type, Interference type, is like Krillin when he uses Solar Flare to make sure other characters doesn’t attack his friends.”

He’s also really good at getting gored and blown up in their place!

    • Not only that but while he also has the best Ki move in the series (kienzan/destructo-disc), he never seems to use it when it’s needed the most. Interference type, indeed. And yet, I like Krillin! Way better than Yamcha (which TFS Ep. 35 even made it a point that he’s at the bottom of “Mr. Popo’s food chain” by getting impaled just seconds after meeting the villain)! Go, Krillin!

      • Spirit Macardi

Not arguing that. Krillin is very likable in that he’s an undeniable underdog, yet he still does his best to at least TRY to stand up against the serious threats.

        • And he’s always there in all the important Events! He’s also the other Z-Fighter with a warrior for a wife! Go, Krillin!

Poor Yamcha, can’t even ino women since the first series. Even Tien has a lady, even if he doesn’t want to. Go, Launch! Fight for your man, and against your allergies!

    Looking forward to this

  • Spider-Man

Ehhh, still not sure how I feel about this game still. I read there is no local play and playing with friends who visit is something I love doing. I can’t keep playing Raging Blast 2 forever though. I’m getting desperate for a new DBZ game. Guess I’ll wait for more info.

  • Sardorim

Still waiting on a confirmation for GT characters…. Why settle for SSJ God when SSJ4 Gogeta is simply the best?

    • GT is non-canon. The only people that exist from it are Uub and Pan, because of the ending of the manga and the DBZ anime. No one else. Nothing else.

      • Sardorim

Multi-verse disagrees with you and the top guy himself even admitted that SSJ4 was amazing.

      • Bobby Jennings

And so what if it isn’t? Doesn’t mean we can’t have them ingame. I would like to play as some Super Saiyan 4 Goku. I don’t care for a Kaioken-lookalike Goku.

        • Sardorim

Agree. GT haters need to stop demanding less content in DBZ games because denying GT is cutting out a lot of content.

That and SSJ3 is being handed out like candy now which in turn has diminished the form greatly. Not surprising, the games that are handing out SSJ3 to everyone are the games that don’t have GT.

          • Bobby Jennings

Yeah the GT hate is ridiculous. Blah blah blah non-canon shouldn’t be in the games blah blah. I want me some Super Saiyan 4. Its one of my favorite forms ever in DB period.

          • Kevin Schwarz

People can say what they want, BUT SSJ4 are the best. Simply love how great the difference in gameplay and power with SSj3. Also, who cares if GT is canon or not? That’s simply dumb.

          • Bobby Jennings

          • Syn

No SSJ4 Gogeta love, people an their canon craziness right? This is Why DBZ BT3 is considered the best, gave us tons of content and all the cast they could cram into a ps2 game canon crap be damned, in the end its Canon for the Anime so pips should just suck it up. Am with you on this one Bobby.

        • I am not denying content for a Dragonball Video Game. Just stating that GT is non-canon.

          • Bobby Jennings

And we already know this. What other reason would you say this other than to aggravate people? I’m sure all of us know that GT is non-canon. It’s not going to stop me from liking Super Saiyan 4.

          • Xskysaix

aggh its annoying everyone talking about aboult ssj4 there are three characters in game that can play as them grr everyone always play with goku he is such an overused character jeez maybe this will be the one dbz game where goku isnt OP but wait he already is SSJ God (sigh) but i want to play as uub,and its nice to see gt characters because, hey it was still a series we wached it we know it even though it was painful to watch…… plz dont hate only 1 reason i didnt like dbgt is because they made goku a kid dammit i already watched a whole damn series of him as a kid …. and pan she spent the entire series getting saved by her grandpa

      • SageShinigami

I’m with you. SSJ4 isn’t as cool looking, and GT was garbage so why remind us of garbage with every game?

  • roockie112

the game sounds fun and it also sounds like you might need tactics to fight I like this shut up and take my money lol

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. So kind of like the character classes of MMOs (tank, DPS people, buffers, healers etc) only put into a quick-paced fighting game… I do wonder how well such different roles will actually work in the actual game and if it will be any fun, but I gotta admit that this experiment sounds REALLY damn interesting. Could bomb, could succeed… very interesting to see which way the pendulum will swing.

  • Elvick

I’m not sure if we’d know this or not, but if I imported this from Europe (assuming they get a retail release) then I’d be okay with playing it online right?

Really want this on my Vita, but NA is only getting digital. D:

  • tushantin

…..Tien, the ruthless Martial Arts champion from the Dragonball phenomenon, has been reduced to an “interference” type character?

  • protofox

I’d say the balance is more like the style in the Naruto games…so..what hes really saying is..it isnt balance..cause the storm games arent..not on a competitive level anyway
