What’s A Gamer To Do With A “Free” $30?

By Hayden (M'iau M'iaut) . July 14, 2013 . 9:30am

The upcoming Club Nintendo Fire Emblem: Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei IV promotion (running through August 31st) seems a special thank you from Mario to RPG fans.

Buy two of the most popular 3DS RPGs (physical or digital) you already planned to get or long ago reserved, find five minutes of your time to register the games, and see $30 magically appear in your Nintendo eShop account. Funds which, as long as your Club Nintendo paperwork is done on time, will never expire and can be used on either the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS digital stores.

So, what’s the next step? Splurge on all those Fire Emblem downloads? Try a selection of smaller titles like Starship Damrey, The Denpa Men or PicDun? Use it as an excuse to grab Animal Crossing or Project X Zone? Or put it away for the time Rune Factory 4, Bravely Default or Pokemon X/Y become available?

And those are only some of the possibilities. Come on, Siliconera—tell us what your 30 bucks will become!

  • I’m thinking of getting Project X Zone

    • Justin Perry

      Definitely get it its fantastic

    • PCZero

Don’t support Capcom. They killed Legends.

      • Brimfyre

If you aren’t playing P X Z and you are a Legends fan, you are only depriving yourself the chance to stare at Tron Bonne’s beautiful booty.

  • Isaac Todd

    I live in Europe =|

    • Ikney

I can’t even make a club nintendo account because I’m from Sweden. :(

      • Guest

Use an american fake adress. You couldn’t get the physical goodies, but at least you could get promos like this and redeem the points for downloadable games.

    • Taedirk

You’ll have to speak up, I can’t hear you over the So Many Games and Gift & Hunt promos.

    • Go2hell66

      its so unfair…

  • Tales_of_Master

First of all I’m gonna get all of the DLC for Fire Emblem and SMTIV. After that I’ll pick up whatever Zelda title I don’t already have. Finally, I’ll see what few Mario games I can get that interest me. I should mention that I already have 20 bucks in my eshop account, so with the added 30$ that would be 50$ total. I’m going on a shopping spree this week :D

    • dragoon_slayer12

I have 33, so I’m just buying SMT IV to get Fire Emblem 75% off

  • malek86

Well, I’m in Europe, but if I were in the USA, and if I had Fire Emblem and also picked up SMT4, I suppose I would use that extra credit to get Donkey Kong Country. If I didn’t already have it. That’s a lot of if’s.

  • KingGunblader

I’m tempted to use my credit to buy up the rest on the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy DLC I don’t have, and then spend the rest of Fire Emblem: Awakening. I already have all the 3DS VC games I want (read: GBC Zeldas), and I’m not really interested in any of the eShop games honestly.

Alternatively, I might put it towards New Super Mario Bros. 2, which I still haven’t played.

  • DigiWing

    Saving it for Ace Attorney

    • Lumi

This. Unless, the physical release actually happens.
EDIT: Sven left Capcom? I, I don’t know what to expect about AA5 anymore….

  • Go2hell66

so namco’s kind of screwed now, no one’s actually going to pay money for project x zone anymore

    • They still get the money for the game.

    • KingGunblader

It’s Nintendo giving you money, which you then give to Namco for PxZ…?

      • Go2hell66

        i see

    • Nero

What does Project x Zone have to do with this promo? People who want it, are still going to buy it.

  • mwatcher

    Ace attorney…’nuff said

  • Ispheria

    Rune Factory 4…

  • Honestly I don’t know. There is a lot to choose from, but I will eventually make my decision.

  • mojack411

I’ve been wanting to get Starship Damrey and Dillon’s Rolling Western, but getting SMTIV DLC is a must as well. Luckily I already have all of the FE DLC that I care for. If Theaterythym was on sale for $30 I may just download that. ARGH! SO MANY POSSIBILITIES!!!

    • XypherCode

I might just buy 30 bucks worth of songs in Theatrhythm xD

  • Alex Sargeant

If Ace Attorney is out soon enough then that, but I will probably buckle and get Kokuga.

  • JustThisOne

I’d probably invest in some SMT/FE:A DLC. *w*

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Kokuga and the rest on DLC for either FE or SMTIV

  • Ethan_Twain

It strikes me that getting $30 in eShop funds for buying Fire Emblem and SMT IV should just about cover buying the DLC for both those titles. So essentially, I’m paying nothing to get the full extended cut of both those games. That just kinda fits the way I like to shop. I pay for Fire Emblem and SMT, I get Fire Emblem and SMT.

If there’s anything left over I’ll see if I can afford bejeweled. Because owning a game device without bejeweled is kind of a travesty.

    • Bejeweled Twist is on my wishlist, but I haven’t decided if it’s my thing or not yet. I already have Tetris Axis though.

    • How the can can you spend 30 dollars on DLC when there are almost none ?!

      • Nero

There is DLC for both games. Fire Emblem has 31 add ons, while SMTIV will most likely have less.

        • PCZero

Yeah but most of SMT4’s day 1 dlc is free =D

      • Rytan

About $52 worth of DLC for FE:A. I think it’s estimated that SMT4’s will total around $25 or so. So, yeah. There’s a lot of DLC to be had for $30.

    • Sardorim

      $30 isn’t enough for all the FE:A DLC. There’s a lot. >_>

      • Ethan_Twain

Oh wow. Well if I skip the retro character DLC and just stick to the new scenarios and classes could I make it? Because I got a taste of the retro character DLC with the free one for getting the game at launch and it wasn’t terribly compelling. I can pass on the rest of that.

        • Sardorim

          Imprtant DLC are…

          Lost Bloodlines 2(Dread Fighter Class)
Lost Bloodlines 3(For Double EXP Skill)
          Smash Brethren 2(Bride Class)
Smash Brethren 3(Iote’s Shield removes Flying Weakness from flying classes)
Rogues and Redeemers 3(Limit Breaker, caps increase by 10)
Challenge Pack – Only for Challenge, can be skipped.
Apothesis – Hardest DLC created. A true test of your limits.

Scrambles – Just Fluff and character interactions, not needed as you can read all the dialogue online.
Future’s Past – Actually a challenge without Limit Breaker. Lot of unique dialogue however like Scrambles you can read it online. Still not the same as actually experiencing it though.

      • Nero

Well, if people just go for the Class/Skill/EXP/Gold DLC, they could have enough for that.

        • Sardorim

Not getting Future’s Past is criminal. It’s really good.

  • AnimeRemix

I was going to spend all $30 on just buying all Sonic game gear games (I am a big Sonic fan), but after seeing MrSirFeatherFang comment, I’m reminded that Awakening DLC exist, so I will not be spending it on the Awakening DLC I wanted the most! =)

  • vileBrenman

I think I’ll buy code of princess it’s 29.99 on the eshop!

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Probably use it on Unchained Blades or the Streetpass games along with Link’s Awakening or some DLC.

      • Nero

Heh, I couldn’t even pay off Unchained Blades with that $30. I get charged tax on the eShop. So, I would still be short some cash.

    • Isaac Newton

      Briliant idea….
I might use that gameplan LOL

  • SwiftWind

  • mervilles

Glad they decided to remove Nintendo zone in Sweden.

  • Tonedeaf

Here’s my plan: I bought 3 20 dollar eshop cards, changed my location to achorage (no sales tax) and loaded into my 3ds. Come Tuesday, I’ll spend 50 on SMT, leaving me with $10 left. That plus the $30 from the giveaway means I’m basically getting a 10 dollar Pokemon game. Sweet!

  • Corginand

Most likely SMT IV DLC, and use the rest for my Pokémon Y fund.

  • ronin4life

I don’t personally have any interest in the SMT games…
    Love the deal, but I won’t be taking advantage of it…>.>;;;

  • Zero_Destiny

I don’t really know what I’ll do with the extra $30 yet. I might just hold onto it for a rainy day, or use it for Ace Attorney 5. But a part of me thinks maybe I should try out the Level-5 Guild games finally, I’ve been wanting to play some of them but haven’t taken the plunge yet.

In all likelihood I’ll probably just hold onto it until some sale comes and causes me to lose all my conviction. That or I could just pour it into some Fire Emblem or SMT IV DLC, it only kinda seems fitting actually. lol

  • PersonaSpace

I’m thinking I’m going to use it on Mario and Luigi Dream Team or perhaps grab a digital copy of Soul Hackers or Harvest Moon so I can stop carrying my physical copy around. (Too bad I missed the sale on SH though.) Waiting for Pokemon seems like a good idea too.

  • LunarKnite

I heard that the last of the Guild02 games will be coming out the following Thursday, so definitely picking that up when it’s out. But aside from that, I’ve already spent so much money on what the 3DS currently offers, I guess the only thing missing from my collection of games on it are the Shantae series.

    • Rytan

Wait, really? Damn. I might end up getting that then. along with the other three Guild games I’m missing.

  • Ace attorney dual destinies if they dont release it physically but if they do uhhhhhhhhhhh, hmmmmm, its a pretty tough choice

  • Ramón Navas

i just going to use it for DLC

  • DuskSharkEX

Besides getting Denpa Men 2…I don’t know what else!

  • IshimaruKaito

im just gnna buy the SMTIV dlc and warriors way and maybe mii force

  • PlayLife

I hope this kinda of promos come to Europe too.

  • ragingmerifes

I recommend getting those Guild-01 games, or Mega Man 2 plus DLCs.

  • Manny Being Manny

I’m going to use it on Phoenix Wright

  • dragoon_slayer12

Depending on what my funds look like. If I’m still able to add $20 a week, I’ll probably get the FE dlc (as I’ll be playing SMT IV first). If not, it mite go into Mario and Luigi, or save it for Pokemon Y or Zelda (whichever comes first). Either way, I’m getting mentioned games regardless, it’s a matter of timing.

Side note, FE players, are the DLC worth it? Not just for story expansion, but for dollar worth = content.

    • Suicunesol

Get EXP Growth and Golden Gaffe. I’ve played them dozens of times. The best way to level and get large sums of money, it’s a definite investment.

The new class chapters are also worth it if you like ninjas and brides.

The Spring, Summer, and Hotspring episodes are worth it if you like humorous support conversations and character CGs. The battles themselves aren’t the main attraction.

The Future Past series offers a look at the children characters in a dark future you have to save them from. I think a lot of people found this DLC series worth it because of the interesting scenario, but personally I wanted more plot and less battle.

Everything else depends on how much you fangirl over previous characters in the series. You get to fight on nostalgic battlefields against large numbers of units from previous games, but battles don’t offer much experience. There’s a light story as well. On the upside, you can view numerous short convos between your characters and previous game characters in most of the character recruitment episodes. The prize characters after completing each map, however, use the game’s default 3D models and don’t get custom 3D models. They do get special skill sets that befit them as characters. So I would say the battles might be worth it if you’re hungry to play on new maps, but probably not the rewards.

      • dragoon_slayer12

All in all, doesn’t seem like the $30+ price tags for everything. Hopefully they drop in price at years end…. I hate Nintendo pricing for its dlc so far….

  • Suicunesol

    Possible candidates:
Code of Princess (been thinking on this for a long time)
Picdun 2 (dungeon crawler, with a dash of risque)
Avenging Spirit (the box art contrasting with the game cracks me up)

Don’t need SMT DLC until I’m hungry for new content. Don’t think I’m gonna get Ace Attorney either, but it looks great…. And Pokemon will be a retail buy.

  • Space_Ghost

Since I want Ace Attorney and it’s only digital, I’ll wait for that. I’ll need the physical copy of Bravely Default and Pokemon Y to add to my collection.

  • Erikdayo

Probably Pokemon X or A Link Between Worlds. Or a WiiU game. Maybe The Wonderful 101 or Wind Waker HD?

  • DuskSharkEX

Oh yeah, do I need to register my 3DS to get the $30 as well?

  • Ace Attorney for me.
I want Rune Factory but I rather get games physical if available.

  • $29082171

AA5, as it’s only avaible digitally and thus wouldn’t be able to find deals for physical copies like game stores and malls do. While the e-shop does have sales, I want to get it on day-1 so as to stop fearing that I’ll get spoiled ASAP.

  • EdzoIV

i would use it on ace attorney buuuuuut im not going to support a digital only release

  • Silver Citizen

Right now, I’m leaning towards Harmoknight, Shantae GBC, and Shantae 3ds. If I have any left over, maybe some SMTIV dlc.

  • Rytan

I still have no idea. Part of me wants DLC. Another part of me wants to save it for Ace Attorney. The other part wants to waste it on the other Guild 01 and 02 games I haven’t gotten yet. The other part wants to finish up my Mighty collection. And the other other part wants Koukuga and Nano Assault Ex. Decisions, decisions.

    • Freud_Hater

      Ace Attorney. ’nuff said

      • Rytan

I’m pretty bad at holding onto money, though… And I doubt it’ll be released anytime soon.

  • Exkaiser

I might consider spending it on Animal Crossing- I bought it off Amazon, but it seems to have become lost in the mail. Labeled delivered, but I never got it…

    • Shouldn’t you have gotten the sum back, in that case? Did you file a complaint or something?

      • Exkaiser

This just happened four days ago. I filed a report with the postal service, but they won’t do anything until at least five days after it was supposed to have been delivered. Amazon won’t do anything since it’s still technically in the delivery timeframe. It could still come, maybe around Tuesday, but I’m just planning ahead for the worst case.

  • Brandon001

I threw out my Awakening registration code due to the fact that i thought it was just some meaningless string of numbers and letters.

Well look whose regretting that now lmao

    • Zeik56

That’s pretty much how I felt about those codes until I heard about this deal. Fortunately I did not throw out the code for Awakening.

  • Pete O’Donnell

Do you still get the free $30 if you already registered Fire Emblem?

    • Rytan

Yes. So long as you also register SMTIV by August 31st.

    • Corey Schulz

      Yep. You do.

    • Pete O’Donnell

Nice, Ace Attorney here I come.

  • mirumu

I generally avoid eShop games given the restrictions so I’ll only use that $30 on game that’s not available physically. Ace Attorney 5 fits the bill perfectly.

  • Corey Schulz

I’ll either save it for Pokémon X, or Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies… I CAN’T DECIDE!

  • Freud_Hater

I WOULD say I’ll use the money to buy Ace Attorney 5, but I already bought and downloaded a 50 dollars card for that… so I’m thinking of using those 30 bucks to buy Animal Crossing New Leaf. Good or bad idea? :/

    • Rytan

Good! Animal Crossing will last you a very long while.

    • 愛憎

      Great idea.

  • resuri

Going to save it for Ace Attorney 5 or I might considering using it for SMT IV DLCs.

    • puchinri

Off-topic, but just curious, is your avatar of a specific series/characters? It’s terribly adorable~.

      • 愛憎

Your posts are always so nice. What a great mod you are.

        • puchinri

Aww, thank you very much! >u<

      • resuri

Candace (Kotomi) and Julius (Juri) from Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade.

        • puchinri

Oh! Haha, I totally recognize that now~. Thank you very much. ^u^

  • Hatsoon Mike

Kokuga and Bugs vs Tanks for me.

  • Corey Owens

Is there an expiration date on this credit?

If not, Bravely Default would be great to wait for. That said, it’s so far off I’m sure I will be interested in a game before it is released.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

I think that, by law, the trade credit doesn’t expire. At least, that’s how it is in Canada.

    • Zeik56

I’m pretty sure there’s only a restriction on redeeming it. Once you do it’s just money in your wallet.

  • PersonaBull

FE:A and SMTIV DLC, as much as it will get me basically. This gave me a reason to finally get around to using all those Nintendo Club cards I had set aside at least! Yay for a free $30~

  • Anna Scruton

Saving it for Rune Factory or Ace Attorney, not sure yet.

  • darkfox1

I plan on buying FE: Awakening when I pick up SMTIV but I have a question. You only get the registration code for new copies right? I just want to know in case they don’t have any new ones when I go in Tuesday.

    • Zeik56

If you’re really lucky someone could have left the code in the box when they sold it and not used it, but if you want that $30 I wouldn’t take that risk.

  • Göran Isacson

Question: will this work even for those who are not Americans? Is the EU doing this promotion too, or shall I have to weep salty tears tonight?

    • i dont think EU club nintendo have this promotion for now, after all SMT IV still dont have a release date there,

  • Zonic505

Ace Attorney 5 and/or the StreetPass DLC games!

  • Ric Vazquez

Starship Damrey, Attack Of The Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tales and what’s left goes to SMT IV DLC since I already have FE Awakening DLC

  • Zeik56

Ace Attorney 5 most likely, although if it takes too long I may sacrifice some of that money toward something else.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Shin Megami Tensei IV DLC and…..>:}

  • I’ll use them for SMT IV DLC, or maybe Project x Zone

  • new_tradition

SMT4 DLC, and probably the FE:A DLC too since I haven’t bought any yet. I was thinking about grabbing Liberation Maiden, but not sure what other DD only games are worth checking out.

If anything, I’ll just wait until there’s major sales or something.

  • Riseabovethesky

    I’ll invest in real estate.

    • Bigabu Beaze

Or buy a share of Amazon(dot)com.

  • Hinataharem

Either Rune Factory or Mario and Weegee

  • Aqua King

If I purchased Fire Emblem when it first came out, and never registered the game… can I register it now and still have it count towards this promotion?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Long as you haven’t thrown away the code yes.

  • M’iau has moved up the ranks to writer? IMPOSSI–no wait seems legit.

    • M’iau M’iaut

If you can call that writing. You may see a few more friendly discussion starters in the future. Things that allow folks to think a little and share their own hopes, dreams and ideas. Something akin to the Siliconera Speaks or Valentines Day threads of many eons ago.

  • Haseyo

Probably DLC for me. Any other game that I want coming out I’ll be getting a hard copy of, so it doesn’t really help too much outside of smaller eShop titles.

  • wasad

I’ll get Mighty Switch Force 1 & 2 for sure.

Will use the rest on Ace Attorney 5 unless by some miracle it gets a physical release.

  • HPN

$30 barely covers what was spent on DLC, sadly.

  • Justin Perry

Might get Mighty Switch Force 2

  • I may spend half of it on the Streetpass games (I’m really curious about the gardening-type game), and then the other half on Ace Attorney.

  • zeta

will buy it for that MiiPlaza Games bundle

  • Mnstrzero00

    Etrian Odyssey 4 anyone?

  • celery

Might get some SMTIV DLC, then save for AA5. Or EOU. Gonna get them both, so it just depends on which comes out first.

  • Jugiatsu

And of course my FE:Awakening survey has expired. No $30 credit for me. FML
