Star Ocean: Material Trader Announced; Is A Social Game

By Sato . July 19, 2013 . 5:42pm

It’s already been a few years since the release of the last Star Ocean title, but it’s making a return—this time as a social card game RPG for GREE, called Star Ocean: Material Trader, where you’ll be collecting cards based off characters and items from the franchise. Series producer Yoshinori Yamagishi will also be in charge of the upcoming mobile game.

4

The game takes place in the space calendar year 5xx. The main character finds himself on the planet Noutis and must help out Tina, a researcher of the organization Ouroboros, who seems to have gotten herself into trouble. Your journey will consist of going on journeys to find “Star Shards” as a way to help her out, while collecting as many cards and materials possible in order to survive in the ocean of stars.

You’ll be progressing through the game’s story by completing quests, accumulating experience and money. The familiar Item Creation system seen in past Star Ocean titles will also be a part of the game.

The Item Creation feature will be used to create powerful accessories that can be equipped onto your cards, making them much stronger than before. This feature allows you to get standard cards and making them much more powerful, so you won’t have to worry too much if your favorite character card is low-ranked.

In addition, players who register in advance will acquire a special card of Peppita Rossetti (SR-rank) from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.

Star Ocean: Material Trader will be developed by Hippos Lab, Square Enix’s smartphone division, who were also in charge of developing Circle of Mana, another social game for GREE. The game is expected to be released sometime this year for iOS and Android devices.

      • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

As things stand I hope they never bother touching valkyrie profile again, we might not get VP:Hrist but its better then seeing turn into a social mobile game

  • Alestaos

Tbh i just wish they would do a HD Remaster of Star Ocean 3 Directors Cut. Man i loved that game

    • Seraph

I would also be happy if they put First Departure and Second Evolution on the Playstation store so I can play them on my Vita.

      • Leon_Tekashi

Now that would be nice. More reasons to get a PS vita too.

      • dragoon_slayer12

Those, valkyrie profile, Crisis Core, and localize Type-0. But with Star Ocean 2 alone, I’d never stop playing my Vita ever again. XD

    • Kitestwinblades

That would make my YEAR! (◎w◎) Square really needs to pick up the pace with classic PS2 releases. Seems like they prefer to work from the ground up with their HD remasters. The problem is its all FF related and not so much about the older games. A lot of companies have this same problem but they seem to be catching on slowly.

Wheres mah Xenosaga – .hack// HD collection/PS2 classic re-release Namco!? …but thanks for Soul Calibur 2 HD! :3

    • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

Dragon quest X, and it was an MMO, you know? something no dragon quest fan ever asked for

      • Shane Guidaboni

It was actually the Dragon Quest 7 remake, that hopefully N.America will get.

        • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

      • FFmax

RIght? Just what the hell is going on with Square these days?

    • AnimusVox

I’ve been saying SE needs to make a new IP. Square Enix, not Eidos. You don’t know how badly I want ‘Agni’s Philosophy’ to be a game but I know it won’t happen.

    way to go Tri Ace…..

    • Anime10121

Not Tri Ace, this is Square.

      • $36598391

Tri Ace owns the Star Ocean series, Square Enix previously Enix is just the publisher of the games

        • Anime10121

I think you are a little confused bro. Square Enix holds the Star Ocean I.P. and thus can do whatever they want with it. Tri-Ace is just the one who actually MAKES/DEVELOPS the games. The actual property is owned by Square, which is why, as you can see, this game will be developed by Square’s mobile team. Tri-ace doesn’t have anything to do with this game.

    • kroufonz

don’t blame those poor soul, it is not them that making this crap

    • fayt255

tri-ace is just fine the way they are the problem is Square owns the Star Ocean franchise so they can tarnish tri-ace’s hard work.

  • Albert Calderon

    Square wdf.

  • Pekola

Wow, a mobile social card game. This is totally new. Just what we were missing for mobiles!!!

yeah, no. Square pls stop. STOP. PLEASEEEE.

Or at the very least, make something original. But preferably, stop.

  • Shane Guidaboni

It’s not okay to swear on these boards is it? I’m feeling a good one about to come out.

  • Uso Ewin

Still not as bad as the TWEWY one

  • psycho_bandaid

Square Enix saddens me. I wonder how much these social games make them? Squeenix spams the crap out of them so I guess it is doing well, but these project really don’t do much in terms of fostering good will with fans.

  • AAa

    So…let me get this straight…
Since you guys(SE) announce KH3 and makes FF13V to FF15, you think you’ll get away from insults from making a star ocean mobile game…fat chance for you.

    • SageShinigami

More like they’re counting on being able to profit from this game to help fund FF15 and KH3, since this is cheap to make and will probably make quite a bit of money.

  • VitaminC

Till the End of Time killed the series… why are they beating a dead horse?

    • Revorse

      How you mean?

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      no

    • JustThisOne

Nah, I don’t think so. Spoilers ahoy, maybe. I don’t think the infamous twist really changes anything.

      • fayt255

I’m probably one of the few who liked the twist I mean at least it was different.

        • DisGuy

You guys do know that with SO4 being a reboot, the twist does not apply anymore? It only applies to the first three. Director of the games said so. SO4 is within our ‘actual’ region, to those who know about the twist.

    • http://vindictushots.tumblr.com/ Okuni-chan

How did it kill the series?

    • ShindoW

I agree. SO3 was the only one I never enjoyed playing / never finished.

    • Ferrick

The twist didn’t really kill it, i mean its not so much to the point where they can’t make a sequel off of it

    • SageShinigami

I’ve never understood why anyone thought the twist killed this universe. It’s not like their story stops.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    no :{

  • epy

Short-sighted as hell. People like to make fun of Nintendo but you don’t see them pulling this crap. They take care of their IPs. S-E has taken every effort to tarnish the image of pretty much every franchise they have. For what? A quick buck.

    • AJ

A “quick” buck? Final Fantasy XV is getting close to Duke Nukem Forever territory.

  • wererat42

Well, there is one more Square franchise that has been untouched, but I shall not name it out of the possibility that I might jinx it and it finally comes back after all these years… as a social game.

    • pekikuubik

Rad Racer? 3D WorldRunner? Tom Sawyer?!

j/k I know which one you mean. I’d add that Enix’s back catalogue is full of hidden treasures that I hope never come to Squeenix’s attention. Like imagine if ActR– *shot*

  • Higashi no Ame 東の雨

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
At least Star Ocean series is still alive.
I will probably play this if it is available in my country…………..and for free.

  • RisukuAozora

    DAMMIT, SQUARE ENIX!

I TOLD YOU TO GO HOME, WHY YOU STILL HERE AND DRINKING?!

  • Kevi Johnson-el

I’m scared as to what they might do to the Valkyrie Profile series now :(

    • Wiccan1109

I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like Valkyrie Profile: Evergreen. A social gardening card battle game for digital watches.

    • fayt255

If Square does the same with Valkyrie Profile then I will have lost all respect for them.

  • Anime10121
  • Benny Tormoes

    Worst. Announcement. Ever.

    Lazy Lazy Lazy game development.

  • midgard229

    faaaaail

  • plmko

Why does it have to be a card game if it’s ‘social’.

  • Randy Marsh

Meh, Star Ocean started going down hill after 2. So I really don’t care.

    • Jibun Rest@rt

Wholeheartedly agree. I thought I was the only one who thought so.

  • Kai2591

  • Timovisch

    Ethereal Blast…..Side Kick………..

  • Fox

So after making two terrible Star Ocean games, they’ve decided that console gamers simply don’t like the franchise any more.

    Makes sense.

  • Sentsuizan_93

……….I think we all got our hopes too high when we saw “Star Ocean”, but those hopes were dashed out the window as we saw “social game” and “GREE”

  • Unlimax

Was that your future for gaming … ?

  • AnimusVox

    Oh…..ok
    :’c

  • WingsOfEternity

tri-ace and SO are the only good things Square has left, don’t dirty their rep with filthy social games.

  • saxophone15

Do you guys really need to go crazy every single time a social game is announced? Seems like you would be used to it by now.

  • Zypharium

Thank you, Square Enix! You did, indeed, again ruin a well-liked franchise. You never cease to amaze me, you know that? It is simply not possible for you to make a reasonable decision? No, you are just that stupid! No one wants a shitty social game, we (or at least I) want a full-fledged Game, and not this rip-off!

Well, I will not cry, when you go bankrupt. Even though I like and await Final Fantasy 15 und Kingdom Hearts 3, I will not shed one single tear for you. I have lost with this my remaining hope for you. Screw you dump!

    • RisukuAozora

Sad thing is that people keep buying these games. And as long as people speak with their wallets, things won’t change.
I will applaud you on the fact you’ll buy a full-fledged game from them, as it proves there’s a market there still. Only problem is that even their full games aren’t what they used to be either.

  • CirnoLakes

It is scary what “social” and “mobile” gaming has done to Square Enix.

Actually, it is scary what mobile gaming has done to the term “social game”. “Social game” used to mean social simulation game. Home to some of the best franchises in the world, like Harvest Moon. Today, “social game” is most commonly used to announce social network games.

And there’s nothing wrong with browser games or mobile games or “social games” or anything like that. It’s just this continued expectation of games that offer so little. You can just feel how little the creators care about the games when they are announced or surface. The games like the original Star Ocean clearly a work of personal love. In fact Star Ocean came to be because a part of the original Wolf Team didn’t want to go on creating Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean was their vision, was their calling.

I don’t think that this is something that would inspire anyone from Wolf Team, now Tri-Ace. It just feels like a sad shell of what once was.

  • Marcus J. Hopkins

    Oh, look…ANOTHER FUCKING SOCIAL GAME!!!

  • admeister

I like card games, and it’s actually being developed by Square-Enix, so there’s some hope that it might actually be decent. I do agree that the current trend of franchises being turned into these games has gotten pretty old, though.

  • H_Floyd

Sadly, it seems the mobile game industry holds all the cards. I’m very sorry for those of you who are greeving over this announcement.

  • JunHoward

NOO O O O’s IT’S EVERY STAR OCEANS fan WORST NIGHTMARE!!

    • Randy Marsh

      Star Ocean 3?

      • Daniel blue

Was 3 really THAT bad? I enjoyed it but heard horrible things about Last Hope (which I didn’t touch yet).

        • William Cox

People just don’t understand it. I love both 3 and 4, though I wish that 4 had more storyline bosses. I own both of those and play the first two on emulators since my PSP broke.

      • Warboss Aohd

SO3 woz betta den SO4 at least.

        • Randy Marsh

They’re both equally meh in my opinion.

  • ivanchu77

“social card game for mobile phones”

    yup, another great Jrpg franchise has died ;__;

  • Eric Harris

sigh, welp, PS2 was the final glory days of the jRPG. (not that there aren’t good ones on 3DS and vita, but still, not glory days)

  • Sheer

Just. Wtf is wrong with the art? Is that really Fayt? Are his arms really that tiny?

    • revenent hell

Im kind of assuming the artwork is not done by the original artists. This is a social game so chances are they aren’t putting a lot of money in to it so im thinking they got cheaper artists to do the character work and such

  • fayt255

Square why do you have to go and do horrible things to your franchises instead of do good things to them.

  • Herok♞

Honestly, you guys aren’t the target audience for this its for Japan where people like these kinds of games, you scorn something you don’t understand for what reason I don’t know. honestly it doesn’t mean your beloved franchise is dead, if anything it means the opposite, if they feel money can be made off of it then it means the franchise is still viable to the point where it won’t be forgotten by SE. Plus this is a safer way of seeing interest for something then spending a lot of money and not seeing returns for the money invested or are you forgetting game development has gotten way more expensive and not cheaper?

    • RisukuAozora

Doesn’t stop us from being disappointed about it tho. I mean, we probably won’t see it over here or anywhere outside of Japan for that matter.
Plus, some of us would rather have a beloved franchise lay peacefully in its grave than for Square Enix to pretty much dig up the grave and rape its corpse, which to some, is what this game is doing…

      • Herok♞

How exactly is this game raping the corpse, you know next to nothing about it except its a social game which, makes it crap automatically for some reason. Also if you know you aren’t getting something then it should matter even less to you that it exists.

        • Ferrick

its a card social game based off a game, don’t expect it to be like Yu gi oh or anything because this one will definitely use the same engine as every single other card social game

        • RisukuAozora

Ok… I’ll admit we don’t know much about it. But we considered trends and what the “social game” market has made beloved franchises into (a good example: Rockman [Megaman] XOVER, most fans of the franchise hated it).

          • Herok♞

True but in the case of XOVER Capcom was screwing with fans before that and they canceled other games and then gave that to them as a replacement, in the case of Star Ocean no games were canceled at this point right?

    • Pekola

These games lack originality. They lack consistency and they’re really not hard to make. We see them dime a dozen on mobile devices.

They prey on your addictions blatantly and are saturating the market. As nice as the prospect of having time-killing card games is, this is overkill.

Specially when all we hear from Square is Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Which are nice, mind you. But if you don’t nurture your seeds, you can’t sow the fruits. Meaning, if Square isn’t going to try and work with other IP’s then they won’t see lasting results.

      • Warboss Aohd

        Thank You!

    • revenent hell

Well I for one bemoan the social games because if word of a game release from a brand I like is in the wind I hope and look forward to it being a game I can enjoy and play.

Most social games are not aimed at the US which means my chances of even getting the option to play it are slim to none, I don’t even get a choice in the matter, not that id want to because I would like the game I play to be meaningful and impactful most social games are not that meaningful in any way really other than its a cheap effective way for a company to get consumers to pay money in to it in smaller amounts faster for as long as the addiction lasts.

SE have been releasing more and more social games as of late I think all together its just rubbing people the wrong way when There’s games people desperately want to play and see released but instead they go cheap with a social game im sure had little to no outcry for it even if people in Japan where asking for it, for every social/android game released why don’t they focus on bringing out a game people are clamoring for world wide?

That’s what makes me irate about hearing about all these social game releases. Games you hear no one want get made, I don’t care how cheaply, yet ones that are obviously in demand wont even get a whisper about them.

I’d love to play a new Star Ocean game but I’d like for it to be a game a value and one I would possibly be able to see released where I live. Its disappointing and frustrating to have a hope just to be squashed for a game that is nothing more than a pay to win scam as the majority of these “social” games are.

  • Space_Ghost
