Drakengard 3 Lets You Perform Weapon-Switching Combos In Battle

By Sato . July 22, 2013 . 5:10pm

In Drakengard 3, you’ll be playing as Zero, the ultra-violent Utautai who has made it her goal to kill all five of her sisters in order to be the last one standing. She’ll have the ability to increase her parameters to enter an “Excited State” and ultimately the “Utautai Mode” by killing enemies and soaking herself in their blood.

Square-Enix’s latest update shares a look at the weapons she’ll be using to achieve her goal.

As previously reported, the weapon-changing system has evolved in Drakengard 3, where players will no longer have to stop attacking and will be able to switch out weapons in the middle of the action. This new function that allows you to perform combos while switching weapons adds a new dimension to the Drakengard series, as you’ll now have to be quicker about reading situations and enemy types in order to switch out to the corresponding weapons.

Weapons will also have a progressive feature that increases their parameters and allows you to perform more powerful attacks as you level up. The latest update also gives us a closer look at details surrounding sword and spears.

While swords aren’t known for being the most powerful weapon, they are the most balanced in versatility and easiest to use. In Drakengard 3, they will have different attacks, such as various forward ranged attacks, whirlwinds and upper-slashes, providing players with a good balance of attack speed and range.

Attacking with swords makes it easier to perform combos and connect hits, thus allowing you to accumulate Zero’s tension gauge quicker, making it easier to get into her vicious Excited State mode.

When it comes to ranged attacks, spears shine above all other weapons for close-ranged combat. They don’t have the speed that swords boast, but make up for it with heavier attacks, better range and the ability to perform dash attacks.

Enemies with giant shields may be able to give sword-wielders a hard time, but they’re no match for the spear’s power, which can easily destroy their defense.

It wouldn’t be a Drakengard game without having a dragon flying around and causing havoc on the battlefield. In addition to the new weapon change system, Drakengard 3 will be allowing you to call your dragon out during ground battles.

Not much more has been detailed regarding how the dragons will be helping out during fights on land, but Square Enix will be revealing more, including details on air battles, in the near future.

Drakengard 3 is slated for release on October 31 for PlayStation 3.

Awesome, sounds like Dante in DMC4. Already sold on this game now let’s just wait for that localization anouncement

  • AnimusVox

Why are all the pretty girls the crazy and mean ones?
    Damn you Zero :(
Oh well I can had virgin Four :>
Unless she’s under age than I’ll pass.
The gameplay is very DMC like, or rather, Bayonetta like. Which isn’t a bad thing to me considering I love both series. And as for the dragon ground attacks, I wonder if they’ll use a similar mechanic that was used in ‘Bioshock Infinite’.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Hotness and Craziness go together like Chocolate and Peanut butter. You almost can’t have one without the other.

But I agree on the second part, this is starting to sound more like an action brawler like Bayonetta, DMC, NG, or GoW.

      • Chiupon

when you become hot they give you a manual on being crazy. People just let you get away with it.

  • Berzerker rage mode

The LE for this looks great, too bad it’s only available at SE’s eshop. I’ll be grabbing the regular version however

    • AnimusVox

Yeah it is really nice but I think it’s a bit steep in price, though if I had the money to spare I’d get it, mainly for the art piece. I love Fujisaka’s work <3

  • revenent hell

For me its kind of refreshing to see such an insane mix of characters.

I really hope this gets a US release because something tells me there’s going to be some very important story bits involved in the Drakengard series I will not be happy to miss out on.

  • Ferrick

    i want this… in my blood, now…

    • Testsubject909

You take it in your blood. I’ll fuse it into my soul.

    • Rayhan PromisedGallery

so, what’s your pact price for getting this game?

      • Ferrick

        my wallet and my time

  • Josephl64

I’m kind of depressed to find out I have to kill the sisters, but this is shaping up to look like a really fun and interesting game anyways

    • AnimusVox

Yeah. For me, after seeing Four I don’t know if I can kill her…
Hell I wouldn’t even call Zero a protagonist, she’s more of an antagonist from what we know of her. But damn if she ain’t a looker.

      • LightZero

No Zero is more of a villainous protagonist. Antagonist is someone who opposes the main character. They can be good, gray, or evil. Likewise for the protagonist. They aren’t necessarily good. Protagonist is the person the story is about. Now I feel like a literature teacher lol

        • AnimusVox

Haha no I get what you mean, I guess I should put my foot in my mouth since she’s kind of like Kratos, save for the whole revenge aspect (I think).

      • Testsubject909

A hooker would imply money is involved.

        • juma086

          he said “looker” haha.

    • revenent hell

Me two but im more interested in what it explains story wise more than anything else.
I think its kind of safe to assume Zero becomes a seal of some form, this is just my speculation because of the black and white attire shes been rocking.
So, more than gameplay or characters I want to know more story bits :D

  • Damarius Wingfield

“Time to kill off the family” I like her style plus blood and excitement! WHY CAN’T REAL 3D WOMEN BE LIKE THAT(Oh wait there’s bitches I take it back)!

  • Tom

My question is: Does Drakengard 3 lets EU and US gamers to perform weapon-switching combos in battle?

Edit: Why the down votes!? My question is meant to express an interest a western localization. Who was that assh0le who voted this down!?

  • Tom
  • AaqibRawat

i loved collecting weapons in 2 because of the diffrent special attacks. this is such great news . it was the only thing i wanted and its in the game :)

  • Thrasher429

Damn it Square let me give you my money and announce localisation plans already

  • Nicholas Martinez

I can’t believe they took out the staff. :'( It was in Drakengard and Drakengard 2. She is a Goddess with high intelligence. Surely a staff would have been perfect for her. They could have even replaced it with some other highly magical weapon. I hope they fix this if they come out with an American version.
