Freedom Wars’ Dangerous “Volunteer” Missions Consist Of Three Parts

By Sato . July 22, 2013 . 11:10am

Freedom Wars takes place in a ruined world that can no longer sustain any life outside cities known as Panopticons, where mankind struggle to find a way to keep on living. The official website updates us with what appears to be a piece of propaganda regarding the Panopticons, in addition to a Famitsu update showing new screenshots of a “Volunteer” mission, where your goal is to rescue civilians from giant enemies.

The following is declared on behalf of all citizens of Panopticon:

The most magnificent experiment in the history of mankind came to be after the end of a devastating war between great powers of tyranny, and the disintegration of an ancient nationalistic regime, the deep regrets of old civilization. That’s when we rose from the ashes along with the light of hope shining upon the dusk’s horizon, and found the decisive answer.

The developmental target of the city state Panopticon was to bring about a government body in complete form, an evolutionary necessity to our generation, which established a brilliant monumental achievement set in the history of mankind.

Panopticon-type city states now have the ability to artificially construct themselves, extending their distribution to bring about an effective sense of happiness to a maximum, by protecting the citizens of Panopticons from all threats with the help of central control systems and thorough security.

Citizens of all Panopticons shall participate in this, by ardently contributing and accomplishing their duties, in order to enjoy  happiness, freedom and prosperity. The distribution of maximized happiness to all Panopticon citizens depend on their contributions and continuous consecration under the central station’s error-free instructions.

We are the first in history to realize a completely fair society, which has been a long-cherished dream of mankind. We are currently part of the greatest generation known to human history.

To all the citizens of all Panopticon:

There are no nations before us. There are no nations after us. Push on forward, towards the desired final and sound happiness, under the ideals of our noble Panopticon.

As we all know, everything mentioned above is mere propaganda, and the so-called citizens of the Panopticon consist mostly of “Criminals” who must participate in fights against giant beasts called abductors in order to shave years off their million year prison sentences that were given to them at birth.

In Freedom Wars, you’ll not only be able to choose your character’s gender and appearance, but you’ll also be able to do the same for your android helpers, called “Accessories,” in addition to being able to set their A.I. to your liking. The Accessories will be fighting alongside the Criminals, but their main purpose it to act as a surveillance figure, to make sure their partners don’t break any rules.

The purpose behind the fights against Abductors, also known as “Volunteer,” is to rescue civilians of the Panopticon. Here’s a look at three key parts of Volunteer missions that you’ll be doing in Freedom Wars:

Sortie:

The Sortie part is the start of the Volunteer mission, where four Criminals and their Accessories are deployed to various battlefields. The starting objective is to use the Thorn Whip equipped to the character’s left arm, and search for Abductors to take out.

Engagement:

Abductors will be fighting by shooting beams and using shields that can reflect gun shots. Criminals will need to rely on using their Thorn Whips to get on top of the beasts and destroy body parts, while finding a way to knock them down. while the Abductors are down, you’ll get a chance to perform a concentrated attack with your allies, dealing massive damage.

Recapture:

After putting the Abductor out of commission, your next step is to recapture the civilian from the cage; however, Abductors have an automatic restoration function, so they will begin to move again in a matter of moments.

Once the Abductor is up, it will begin to pursue the Criminals. During this moment, the Criminal carrying the citizen must do everything they can to send them to safety through an escape pod, which will end the Volunteer mission upon doing so.

Freedom Wars is slated for release in 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

  • Ryujin

Hmm. Reading this, I can’t help but wonder if the 8 player co-op they announced is really just 4 actual people plus their A.I. companions…

That said, as someone with absolutely no friends who own a Vita, I’d like to know how solo friendly the game is. Carrying around a rescued citizen with only your accessory to back you up sounds like a bit of a drag.

    • DriftSlave

      Think God Eater.

      • Ryujin

God Eater is all combat, though. No need to babysit civilians. I’d prefer maybe having the AI carry the NPC to safety while I still get to do the fighting.

        • TheExile285

Perhaps you’ll be able to give the AI commands? Or maybe there will be a system similar to FFXII’s gambit system.

    • TheExile285

If they make the AI as smart as the AI in GEB, it shouldn’t be a problem. Also do you not have Wi-Fi?

      • Ryujin

I do, I just kind of dislike playing with random people. Sadly, social awkwardness gets the best of me, even in games.

        • TheExile285

How about finding some Vita PSN friends then? There are a few Vita owners like myself who regular Open Thread.

A month ago, I might have said you could find some on GameFAQ but there’s a lot of jackasses there so avoid it.

          • Ryujin

That’s probably my best bet, unless the RL friends I’ve been advertising Vita games to decide they want to get in on the action, too. :P Thanks.

          • Altin

In case you want to add someone: Enad7
I’ve been slacking off a little, but I usually play Wipeout 2048 or PSO2. Gonna get Freedom Wars and most likely GE2 as soon as it gets announced.

          • Syn

You could add me up as well, huge fun of hunting games, would be great to play with some of the pips here on siliconera, my psn id is: syn_v3. Usually play soul sacrifice, waiting on the rest of the hunting games to pop up, should be great fun.

          • Altin

            Will do :D

          • Ryujin

I don’t have any real multiplayer games as of yet (bought my Vita a month ago), but keep an eye out for a friend request from CursedSwordsman (I know, pretty lame, huh? :P).

          • Virevolte

(Bah, it’s still fine. Better than SasukeGoodLooking or LuciferDarkMaster.)

          • Altin

Doesn’t sound that bad to me. I rather hate those that mix up numbers, capital letters and so on. Or pretty much that which Virevolte mentioned :D

          • Syn

Dude, thats a great name, had to give mine the underscore and such cos I have had 3 accounts with the name, figured I should have version of them too

    • tubers

LOL that’s what I’ve been wonder since the info was released several days back.

I hope it’s at least 4 Human Players and 4 Accessory Players.. actual people.. It’s still 8 actual people..

I can’t see how it can’t work if Killzone Mercenaries is able to do 8 player MP while looking good.

    • Dinoegg96

In one of the first (the very first) images, you can see more than 8 players (or characters), it looks like a PvP fight:

      • tubers

Wow. There seems to be 14 characters rendered in that shot.

  • TheExile285

Its nice to see this isn’t just a standard hunting game. Reminds me more of Phantasy Star and love the art style. Reminds me of GEB.

Edit: There better be a tsundere personality type for the android. If not tsun than yandere :P

  • BizarreJelly

I really hope this gets localized, it looks quite interesting – although being on vita doesn’t inspire much confidence. But then again we have xseed, hint hint!

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

This game is being developed by Studio Japan, Sony 1st party. I’d say it’d be rare that they didn’t localize it for the West (though there have been a few exceptions).

    • Bigabu Beaze

I hope so too! It looks so awesome!!!

  • Ferrick

    now i’m interested

  • Eileen Sy

And maybe one day, the Accessories will gain a ~heart~ and we’ll become true partners~
But really, this game looks quite interesting!

    • Asaoko

…So this is how they keep people from making babies… ;D

  • mike dickson

interesting but i never trust AI they always some how fuck me over even in GEB they were borderline suicidal

    • Ni

my only problems with AI in GEB are called Sakuya and Kanon

      • mike dickson

sakuya i didn’t mind but kanon on the other hand …

        • Ni

well. sakuya in my case always is the first to get KOed or the one that get more KOed in the whole mission. i always have to babysit her when she is one of the partners she have a suicidal factor in my game.
And in Kanon case…well it’s Kanon the Friendly Fire Queen. because of this I tend to always make some aragami chase her since she wants to shoot ‘em up so bad :p

          • Syn

but thats how canon was designed lol, she literally says she sucks at shooting in one of her mission briefings, as for Sakuya, she seemed to perform just fine for me,, always had that heal bullet, though her survivability was not high, she was a great support character, and she gave the most Link bursts in my case.

          • Ni

I barely use guns :/. i shift into gun mode for healing only, and since I love using LB Alisa is my favourite partner for dat link burst spam

          • mike dickson

lol my sakuya is the same i always send here to gather stuff :p and i never bring kanon with me she hates more or something she always shoots me

        • Seasqwaa

Strangely enough, I use Kanon whenever I can. And I think it works for me… I think I’m just doing things wrong. I can learn from this!

          • Altin

I use Kanon as well. Her Friendly Fire usually lightens up my heart – I dunno why :D

          • Altin

I use Kanon as well. Her Friendly Fire usually lightens up my heart – I dunno why :D

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Sounds kinda like capture the flag, but with human lives. First it’s seek the flag holder, then its destroy it, and finally it’s return with the “flag”. Liking the “thorn whip” travel thing, hope to see it in action soon.

  • dragoon_slayer12

If we don’t get God Eater 2, I’d be content with this…. I hope we get both though.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Since this is a Sony-made game, it’s almost guaranteed that it’ll come to the West~.

    • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Agreed to a degree. I wouldn’t say content, but I would be happy lol

  • Sentsuizan_93

I want a second trailer for this so badly now.

    • Spider-Man

      How’s Sawney and Bean doing?

      • Sentsuizan_93

        WAAAAAAAAAAH! SAWNEY! BEAAAAAAAN!
        *sniff*
        ….They’re in a better place. :P

  • Shinobikens

Now we hope for a NA release

  • Spider-Man

I want this game so badly it ain’t even funny anymore. Gods Eater 2, as well. And Pokemon Y. And Bravery Default. Oh, Monster Hunter 4, as well. It’s a good time to be a handheld gamer.

    • Altin

And Ys IV and EO: Untold and SSB. Truly a fruitful year for handheld owners <3

      • dragoon_slayer12

The 3ds is shaping up nicely. What a year for it alone. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Vita…. Such potential…. Well, it took almost 2 years for Nintendo to release stellar titles on a monthly basis, hopefully Sony can do the same.

        • Altin

As a owner of both, I have to disagree. Surely it can’t compare to the library of the 3DS but this year alone was quite great – Senran Kagura, Soul Sacrifice, PSO2, Hotline Miami (Yes, it is that good imo), Ys IV and both Atelier Arland games and not to forget Toukiden.

          • Guest

I won both as well. I wasn’t too fond of the Soul Sacrafice demo enough to buy at current price, so I’m waiting for a price drop. Pso2 hasn’t gotten a US release date, so I’m impatiently waiting for that. I’ll try Hotline on your word alone. I’m dying for Kagura to get a US release (both 3ds andvVita versions.) I’m getting Y’s and Killzone this year, so I agree. And I’ve never played Atelier before and want to check it (does it have a US release?). I haven’t forgotten Toukiden, but I don’t remember release date outside of Japan. I only use my US account, not trying to spend $$$$ for Japanese games if I can’t understand them

          • Altin

I liked Soul Sacrifice a lot. It was not near as good as PSO2 in my opinion but it is quite a nice game to spend time with. PSO2 can be bought as a physical copy. You really just need to get the hang out of the menu. Otherwise, there are tons of helpful people on Ship 2 and 4 which are English as well. Ys is a must-buy for me, as I am a huge fan of the series. I can really recommend Hotline Miami – it is like Ys, worth the soundtrack alone. Really one of the best OST’s of this year imo. You better check out some Gameplay videos first before you are going to buy it. It’s quite challenging and fun. Yup, both US and Europe release. Sadly, it is digital only. Totori is already available and Meruru will be released around next month afaik. Toukiden has been confirmed by Tecmo Koei for localization. I am really hyped for both Toukiden and Ys this year, former alone for the fact that it is made by Omega Force and features several Weapons which you dont see that often in the Hunting Genre.

Otherwise, I am really looking forward to Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate too. I cant wait to play with 5 characters. Dis year is gon b good mate :D

          • dragoon_slayer12

I’m getting Orochi as well as DBZ too. The fact that omega force make Toukiden doesn’tmatterto me, but the gameplay looked sick. My beef soul was it’s 1 room mission crap. I like large areas, even if their broken up into other “rooms” (big or small). Other than that, great game, just too much of a draw back to spend full price for me. With PSO, I want to play badly, but I don’t want to invest hundreds of hours (which I will/would) to then start over for the NA version, so I’m suffering as is. I wish it had an offline mode (so I don’t become a hinder on groups) cuz I have to be able to put it on sleep at will due to kids

          • Altin

I still get wet dreams just by thinking about all these delicious characters you can play as in Orochi 3 – more than 150 to be precise.
I love that Toukiden uses weapon such as the Hand Scythe with Chain or Spears. I dont get how there arent any games that don’t have a freaking Spear. It’s Oblivion and Skyrim all over again.
Without being too pessimistic – I honestly doubt that it is coming anytime soon. Considering Japan just got now Episode 2 with the Duman race now – Sega just has to work constantly on the localization. Remember PSU? It’s really the same scenario. Yeah, offline play would have been a nice thing, but I dont mind it that much tbh.

          • dragoon_slayer12

That’s true with PSO…. Which sucks, cuz we got played with PSP2+ (whatever it’s title was). Hopefully when the US version drops, we get everything in one shot. I hope in the future, they add the beast race, I love the hell out of them (although I rarely used the transformation. So strong. ^o^)

          • Altin

Same here, Beasts need to get into the game again. I like them even more than Dumans..

          • TheExile285

            Is this low enough?

            http://www.amazon.com/Soul-Sacrifice-playstation-vita/dp/B002I0K1Y0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374535920&sr=8-1&keywords=soul+sacrifice

And Shinovi Versus is never coming to NA. Even if someone actually considered it, the media would crucify them in a second.

Hell, look at all the crap Dragon Crown gets because of one big breasted character.

          • Altin

Yeah, but in all honesty? F*ck Kotaku. They are as relevant towards gaming journalism as Jessica Chobot.

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Enough with this nonsense. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Siliconera is not the place to voice your dissent about other sites. Take it elsewhere.

          • dragoon_slayer12

It was DragonCrowns fault though, some guy called the artist a “hormone raging teenager”, and he retaliated with homoerotica (which was hilarious). As for Senran KKagura, the gaming community is mature enough to handle content, and a game like that would take less risk going digital only. Can’t speak on sony’s parental restrictions (as I’m and adult and never needed to enforce it, yet), nintendo has plenty of counter measures to prevent children from viewing AND purchasing it without parental assistance (if parents actually use the security settings, which I doubt). It’s just a shame that amaricans hold that double standard with violence and sex in video games and most media. I read an article recently about season two of Hannibal (show), and the director mentioned how the execs had a problem with ass crack being visible. THE CORPSE BACK WAS TORN APART (don’t want to gross people out with details). So to cover up the problem (ass), they drenched it in blood to “fill in the vracks” (he he)…. Just sucks, I love the story in the anime, I want to experience the game….

          • ShadowDivz

Its not the gaming community that will have a problem with senran kagura. It’s soccer moms with husbands in high places or a large social circle with too much free time. And other..*shudder* femnists.

Also, he had no right calling Kamitami names. Kamitami just responded with “here’s some dudes now stfu” and apparently that makes him a homophobe. No one called the other guy a jealous pre-op transexual.

But we digress, siliconera is not the place for this discussion.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

not to worry… I don’t think soccer moms know of the existence of the Vita :P
Best to release the game now!!!

          • ShadowDivz

In the words of my future waifu from P3.
“Let us strike while the iron is hot!”

          • dragoon_slayer12

Regardless of that drama, I’m pretty sure it helped bring awareness to the game that would’ve others gone unnoticed (don’t know why it would though)

          • Altin

I guess even bad journalism causes some publicity.

          • ShadowDivz

True, but the companies reputation might get damaged.(an actual concern).
Anyways dude, don’t hold your breath.

          • dragoon_slayer12

Ended up deleting my comment trying to edit…. So that guest is me….

I own Ragnarok Odyssey, Disgaea 3,and plan on getting persona (too busy with my 3ds).i can’t wait for Disgaea 4 to come this way, and hope they wisen up and bring D2 to the Vita sooner rather than later (you know it’ll happen)

Those are just the RPG’s I own. I have over 15 Vita titles excluding psn only (dokuro, JGR, etc. That’ll add another 15)

          • Altin

I own loads of Digital Games, as for Physical I have Everybody’s Golf, Wipeout 2048, PSO2, DJMAX Technika Tune. The rest of my library is digital only.

          • dragoon_slayer12

I download everything myself, more convenient. Sony really needs to drop the price on the cards and release a 64gb or 128gb soon, I hate deleting games for the sake of space. I’m surprised I still have 20gb left on my 3ds (32gb card), I have 15+ full titles and over 40 eshop exclusives. Mite have to upgrade (if it can use higher than 32gb) by the end of the year with all the games I plan on getting. ^_^

          • Altin

Consider yourself lucky – I have to struggle with a 8GB card. I really need to get a bigger card soon. I have tons of Digital Vita games that I received through my job but I can install them all due to the lack of Space. PSO2 alone devours more than 3 GB and that is just with Updates.

          • dragoon_slayer12

DAMN!!!!! Good thing I have a 32gb (in regards to PSO). But it doesn’t really matter depending on how many games you have. MGS is close to 4gb (only if they had them separated at launch, I only need 2 on me at all times), and oddly enough, Disgaea is 3+ as well, and that’s a game worth keeping on you (item world baby). I keep MvC on me for shits and giggles, and MK cuz I’m not done with the towers and Arcade mode (taking my time). I like to have everything on me at all times. With the PSP, a 32gb held all my PSP and ps1 games, over 60 titles, I can barely hold 20 on the Vita, which blows…. Sony was dumb not having it with 32gb flash expandable by memory cards…. Hopefully they release one down the road with 32gb and 120gb built in with memory expansion…. Man I can dream….

          • Altin

Maybe at the Gamescom. Let’s hope for the best :D

          • dragoon_slayer12

If not, TGS. I’d import that in a heart beat. THANK YOU REGION FREE!!!! XD

          • Altin

            Haha :D

          • dragoon_slayer12

Also, where do you work that (I assume) they give you free games? Hook me up!!!! XD

  • vileBrenman

Sweet! Looks like you can really zip around with the thorn Whip!

  • roockie112

well I probably import this game looks good

    • TheExile285

its a first party title. it will most likely get localized 2-3 months after Japans release of it…

      • roockie112

I hope so cause it looks pretty legit it would be bad if they didn’t I have hope that it might

  • tubers

Come on Capcom! If this takes flight, please consider a Lost Planet VITA like 1 and 2.

(Guns, graplings [Thorn Whips], verticality and giants)

    • Ferrick

this isn’t by capcom, its by sony japan

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Excuse my language, but this game is going to be the shit lol =)

  • 栗場 江理久

Completing a mission is going to feel absolutely GREAT with this game. I STILL WANT TO SEE WHAT OTHER WEAPONS WE CAN GET IN GAME. My wishful self would LOVE something dramatic like a scythe or knives of some sort, while my realistic self says, ‘Never in a million years’ ;n; oh well~ this is pretty awesome news, I really want to see gameplay even more now :D

  • Saintdante

Seems like an interesting game looking forward to playing it when it eventually comes out.

  • natchu96

At least it really is somewhat fair of a society . . . in that it sucks for everyone.

  • ShadowDivz

Just give me dual pistols, i can AND WILL destroy everything in my way.
Hell, just give me A pistol and i can promise the same results.

Accessory/Aigis: “M-Master, be careful don’t do anything reckless like last time.
    Me: “Why Aigis? You worried?”
Accessory/Aigis: *blush* “W-what?! Of course not idiot! I just don’t want to clean up some corpses”
Me: “Your so cute when you lie.”
    Accessory/Aigis: ” ….shut up” >.>

  • Vash bane

game sounds heavy on the story.

looking forward to itbut only one thing gets me that im curious about
only info we heard so far was that the game was multiplayer related
and im really curious can we play solo with the AI.
(not really a social person ^^’)

  • Virevolte

The setting sounds interresting. Quite original too. =)

  • Anime10121

Loving the character art/theme! It sounds great, although I hope its “hunting genre” roots arent like MonHun’s (I could never get into that game, never tried God Eater so dont know about that).

    • Syn

I think you mean Gods Eater right? God Hand isnt a hunting game if I recall correctly, its a beat em up by Capcom.

      • Anime10121

Yeah fixed, dont know why I said God Hand, which was made by Clover. Meant Namdai’s God Eater :P thanks for that *Edits*

  • Mordina

Love the possibility to be female and the picture with the female and male Android, rawr I really hope we get many good customization options. I also hope the game has a deep, engaging story and that you can interact with your Android.

  • Firekitty

Well, whips are pretty dramatic, though I’m not sure if they’re actually a weapon or just a platforming tool…

  • dragoon_slayer12

Preach it Dood!!!! Don’t know why my comment got deleted/replaced though…. Whatever.

  • Altin

Because they hate criticism. They seem to have deleted my reply as well, so I will post it again over here:

Sorry for my unbiased opinion about a “competent and journalistic” website. I will try to find a child-friendly comparison next time. For the meantime, I will just post this:
