Dragon’s Crown Looked Really Different When It Was Being Made For The Dreamcast

By Spencer . July 24, 2013 . 1:17am

Dragon’s Crown has been in Vanillaware president George Kamitani’s mind for well over a decade. The game was originally planned for Dreamcast, but instead of the detailed 2D artwork the game is now known for Dragon’s Crown used 3D models.

The art book has a glimpse at three characters designed back in 1998. You can see elements of the current Sorceress, and Wizard in these models.

Eventually, the female warrior design would be the base for Fantasy Earth Zero, a Square Enix PC game that Kamitani worked on as the art director.

Wow I never expected that… And Fantasy Earth Zero??? I really never thought that George Kamitani worked as art director on that game!

  • Slayven19

I should have looked like that, it looks way better character designwise than what we got now. I however still like the style we got now but come on this is way better. Hopefully they may throw some of the looks in as DLC.

    • Kevadu

      No. Just no.

      • Slayven19

No what? I talked about more than one thing in that post. For future posting, if your gonna thumbs down at least give a reason other than “no just no”

        • d19xx

Ignore the thumbs down. You’ll get some regardless of what you posted. Check the comments in the other articles here in Siliconera, even the top comments gets them…

          • Derek E Nay

I never liked the idea when they brought the whole thumb down option. Almost made me leave the site; but I love the communality much more then others so I stayed anyway.

Still, I like the old artwork then the new one myself. But that’s only my opinion. As much as I love boobs, the sorcerers is a bit to big; this sorcerer is cute.

          • d19xx

The Elf and DWARF got the cute department covered….

          • Derek E Nay

I would certainly agree with the cute elf :P

          • Slayven19

Agreed, and people are thumbing us down like we don’t like the new art or something.

          • Slayven19

Thanks for the tip, I haven’t been here to long myself but there are other sites that use this layout.

    • Suriel Cruz

      “You Crazy!”

      • Slayven19

        Any reason why I’m crazy?

        • Suriel Cruz

There’s actually no reason for You to be crazy or for Me to call You that way(isn’t it?), is just a say as how you won’t like the Amazing artwork we got instead of this one. The new one looks way more detailed and more accurate in concept, instead of these. If you look at the little girl, I think that she’s suppose to be the Sorceress, but for me she only pass as an Apprentice Witch, not Sorceress and the Female Knight, she does not have pants, only straps, so yeah, the new artwork is better and more detailed. But for tastes colors, right?… ^ ^

ps. Let’s not forget about the ‘attributes’ that the new one has.

          • Slayven19

Understandable, I still like the new art myself just honestly not the sorceress to much and I don’t even hate her either. Either way those were just concepts as well and could have evolved a bit more while still maintaining that look.

    • d19xx

Nah. They look good but lacked the oomph of the current design.

    • http://twitter.com/AuroraXIII AuroraXIII

I also prefer the older designs.

  • Suriel Cruz

Thanks for the info. ^ ^
The Wizard does resemble the new one.

  • Tom

Those orcs are straight out of WarCraft 2 :)

    • Warboss Aohd

naw, dey look like Fantasy Warhammer orks more den anythin’

Warcraft Orcs are less bestial in appearance.

  • fyi1191

The Knight is pantless? Didn’t know such design existed in the 90′s.
The art reminds me of FFT.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Its the common ignorant opinion (no offense) to think that fanservice designs only started with recent designs. It hasn’t. This stuff has existed even in the precious 90s.

  • amagidyne

Wow, that sorceress design is good. I wish we had that one instead, but then again, she would’ve been Dreamcast-era polygons.. I’ll count my blessings.

  • Raze

    What’s with the knight?

Maybe they will make DLC for it

    • Mnstrzero00

You want to see the dragons crown knight in a pants less dlc skin? Well it would even out the fan service.

  • Lazulis

The knight…her…pants??? I like the newer designs myself. The knight is weird, and the sorceress…I can’t describe it, but I like the newer one, weirdly huge cleavage aside. The wizard looks way better too.

    • KuroNathan

She got her pants the same place where lulu got her skirt

      • Chiupon

Yeah, but Lulu actually got a skirt… That Knight might wanna get a full cash refund or some store credit at the Tetusya Nomura Boutique.

        • KuroNathan

if she got store credit I suspect she’d get a belt shirt next…

not that there’s anything wrong with that, go for it knight! It’ll match your pants!

        • Warboss Aohd

          ok, dat made me laugh.

  • Lazulis

The knight…her…pants??? I like the newer designs myself. The knight is weird, and the sorceress…I can’t describe it, but I like the newer one, weirdly huge cleavage aside. The wizard looks way better too.

  • Namuro

I think the knight’s design is really clever! I mean the enemies will be too distracted to fight back, right? Well…male enemies, that is…

It’s pretty cool to get a glimpse into what could have been. Kamitani-san must be overjoyed to see his long awaited project finally completed!

  • Go2hell66

is Dragon’s Crown related to Princess Crown in anyway other than the fact their made by the same developer?

    • AkuLord3

Maybe like with Muramasa, it was going be a connection to Princess Crown

  • PlayLife

The Sorceress shows how’s puberty done right xD
I would love to see some in-game footage from the Dreamcast version, if there’s any of course, never expected this was planned to DC release.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Dat knight

  • Wappuli

In some ways I prefer this old desing for sorceres, but in overal I think that what we got is better.

  • XypherCode

I liked Fantasy Earth Zero while it lasted. :)
Good to know he was actually the art director for the game.

    • Just Tim

I know, right? I have fond memories of the game, despite the bittersweet/downer developments–>ending.

Oh, hey, aren’t you Xypher, a former player linked to a cheater guild collectively known as TSUNDERE in-game?

Nice job helping to kill off the game… in America!

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Not bad. I do hope Kamitani ends up using some of those designs on his studio’s next fantasy title (though personally I hope their next game is sci-fi, but that’s for another discussion…).

Pantless knight is an interesting choice (though those could just be skin tone colored tights underneath… >.> just saying). My inner perv approves!

Also, didn’t know Kamitani worked on art direction for Fantasy Earth Zero. Now I know why I found that game fascinating.

  • ChiffonCake

Nice. You can really see how Kamitani’s art has evolved since then.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is really nice seeing that some game from Dreamcast legacy is able to come to this current game generation.^_^

  • TheExile285

Thank god they changed the designs,

    • ElAbuelo69

      You prefer ‘dem HUGE knockers?

  • vileBrenman

Wow this game has been in the works for a while!

  • Manny Being Manny

I gotta say I prefer the old Sorceress, its not so excessive.

  • Ubermench

    “Dragon’s Crown used 3D models”

    U mad, bro.

  • Nitraion

Sorceress and Wizard in their younger days :>
Wow Knight not hold back with her clothing fetish.. :O
That’s why her brother replace her now :V

  • thaKingRocka

I kind of like these more subdued designs better. Also, DC 4 LIFE. :P

  • Happy Gamer

It looks very “vanilla” vanillaware art lol. Back in Princess Crown days. I am proud to be an owner of that game when it came out :)

Naturally, the evolved art I really love, but the original ain’t too shabby and brings out some nostolgia

  • Robgoro

Maybe it’s just me having grown up in the Nineties, but I do like the design of the 1998 sorceress much better.

  • SlickRoach

Interesting designs, and shocked to see how long they had this game in mind. Although I appreciate the new sorceress and her “assets” more :p

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

the Dreamcast was so ahead of it’s time they even had a game from the future! I kid but man the dreamcast really was quite a gaming machine

  • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

Glad we’re getting it now. It probably wouldn’t have been localized if it was on dreamcast; it would also look a lot uglier since it would’ve used polygons. The new designs are also much better.

  • Kelohmello

Man, why’d you have to bring up Fantasy Earth Zero and make me cry.

But I’m glad it wasn’t for the Dreamcast. Because then I would never have gotten to play it.

  • http://queensblade.net/index.php/characters/cattleya gulabjamuns

So basically I think this thread boiled down to another one of those threads full of pro-boobs vs anti-boobs comments, lol (with a side dish of “where’s her pants?”). Admit it or not, however you put it, it’s always about the boobs (or just sex). Loved or hated but never ever ignored. :3

Or maybe there’s just quite a large amount of moe fans around here, lol.

Personally, boobs or not, for all three characters shown here, I much more prefer what they look like now in the upcoming game. Even the knight. I just prefer the more adult looking characters over these softer, cuter designs. I also find the newer designs more unique in their style while 1998 stuff seems a lot more derivative (aside from those pants I guess, lol). And the new designs seem almost Frazetta and D&D inspired (as many have said before), which suits the game’s over all atmosphere, setting, and style more, imo (while the old ones seem more suitable for a traditional RPG to me).

  • Warboss Aohd

what, we don’t get da lion man? dat suckz.

  • AndyLC

Those orcs are great, they’re something straight outta Warhammer
