Surprise! Monster Hunter 4’s Insect Staff Has A Few More Tricks Up Its Sleeve

By Sato . July 25, 2013 . 2:10am

Monster Hunter 4 will be introducing two new weapons to the series in the Charge Axe and Insect Staff. While the Charge Axe and its many features have been in the spotlight lately, Capcom still had a few Insect Staff tricks up their sleeves, which they revealed in the official site’s latest update.

As we’ve detailed in the past, the Insect Staff will have the ability to extract energy from monsters, and provide the Hunter with buffs. The type of extract varies according to the monsters and their body part you attack. The extracted energy comes in four different forms, each indicated by their own colors:

White: Mobility enhancement

Orange: Defense Up

Red: Attack Up

Green: Health Recovery

The latest update has revealed that in addition to being able to gain buffs from the extracts, you’ll also be able to mix them up and gain skills to go with the enhancement; for example, if you mix white and orange extracts together for the Insect Staff’s “Double Up” ability, you’ll get a Defense Up and also the useful “Earplug” ability, which grants immunity against roars.

There’s also a “Triple Up” ability, that allows you to mix three different extracts. Capcom haven’t revealed much more as of yet, but we’ll be seeing more of it in the near future.

The Insect Staff will come in a set with the staff and the attached insect, called Hunting Insect. The earlier footage of the weapon showed a beetle-like insect to go with the staff. The above image shows one that looks closer to a dragonfly. You’ll have access to other types of insects, as they can be enhanced and even evolve into new forms.

The Hunting Insects will come with their own stats such as power, stamina, speed, and all the elemental attributes. You’ll be able to gather specific foods from quests and fields, in order to enhance their stats and abilities.

By continuously enhancing their stats, you’ll eventually meet certain conditions to level them up, further powering up your Insect Staff buddies. They can then evolve into different types of insects, such as the speed-type Garuuhel, and the power-type Zameel Beetle, shown in the above images.

Genel Sertas

In Monster Hunter 4’s latest trailer, we got a peek at a new scorpion-like monster. This monster has been revealed as the Genel Sertas. It uses its destructive tail-pinchers and tough legs to take out foes.

It doesn’t have wings to fly, but the Genel Sertas has the ability to release powerful pheromone gasses to attract neighboring Alceltas (the smaller insect monster shown above) and use them to fly. When they’re not flying together, they will still cooperate and attack the Hunters, so you’ll have to keep a close eye on both of them during battle.

When monsters lose stamina, they usually go out of their way to look for food on the field. Genel Sertas is a little different, as it rather consumes its new friend whenever hunter strikes.

Monster Hunter 4 will be slated for release on September 14th, for 5,990 yen on Nintendo 3DS.

I was already interested in the staff but this… just icing on the cake

    • J_Joestar

yeah, definitely gonna main the bugstaff when this comes out alongside my current HH.

  • Looks like MHP3, MHP2, and MH2. I really boring. They change a something with this game?

    • gamefreak86

Sorry not all of us want a complete overhaul and change of gameplay. Don’t fix something that doesn’t need fixing I.e. FF.

      • Syn

Truth, as the saying goes, if it aint broke………

      • J_Joestar

Well despite not being a complete overhaul, from what we have been shown of 4, it has a lot more significant changes and innovations than MHO.

    • Erikdayo

You really boring? Well, if you say so. I’ve never met you.

As for Monster Hunter, the games have evolved slowly but surely. I’ve played about 90 hours of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate multi-player with friends on 3DS. And I’ll tell you, it is one extremely fun game. Not for everyone. But very addictive if you can get into it. Between the single player story I have left to do and the multi-player I could imagine myself playing for another 150 – 200 hours.

  • Ban The Jackass

I’m contemplating getting Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate… Seeing this, maybe I ought to wait for this one instead.

    • gamefreak86

Why its not officially announced and won’t be out for at least another year.

      • Ban The Jackass

My conscious say choose one game. And I chose SMT 4 Limited Edition. YEAAA worth it!

        • gamefreak86

Why not both as well as FEA:)

          • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

hahaha~ well since the game will be spread apart in release~ i suggest you buy MH3U~ play it for 100++ hours (which im still in High rank after playing 150hours /takingmytime) then when MH4 is released~ sell the MH3U for money boost :3

        • Go2hell66

you really need to play both, completely different games and both very good, especially if you have access to multiplayer it would be a very bad idea to skip on mh3u

  • Go2hell66

cant say im a fan of this weapon. compared to the other weapons this one just seems way too farfetched and impractical for killing giant monsters

    • Virevolte

I can see your point. I would love to try it though.

    • ronin4life

      To play devils advocate for the sake of arguments that it could be feasible, consider the following;

In real life hunting, animals are used all the time. Dogs of course, but also Hawks and other birds. One technique uses a type of water fowel with a rope around its neck tied to the “fishermen”. When the bird catches fish, the rope prevents the bird from swallowing and the fisherman just takes the fish out of its mouth.

And we also domesticate insects IRL as well.

  • gamefreak86

Clearing up g rank atm in 3u.Hope this comes over.

  • Samurai_Heart

Man they are pushing the insect staff hard on peeps, I just hope they don’t suddenly take the weapon out on the next iterations XD

Love the fact that your insect evolves as well, wonder what the ultimate insect will be.

    • J_Joestar

  • Judgephoenix

Long as they don’t bring Slime element back. Guess they were just testing the waters with that one lol. Oh they should also add a Sky Elder Dragon where you fight on a sky ship and hand gliders and jump on his body XD.

    • Go2hell66

i like slime element they just need to balance it a bit a better with the other elemental weapons. i admit it does get a bit annoying when everyone and their mothers is using a slime weapon but i’d be pretty sad if they removed it entirely

      • J_Joestar

Slime is only really godly in groups though, elements tend to do better in the long run.
Although i guess it would be an issue since 4 in going to have online without the need of a Wii U.

  • Virevolte

An alternative Hunting Horn ? Sweet.

    • J_Joestar

unless i missed something, it seems to only have personal buffs rather than party buffs, and with built in online for mh4 i doubt it would really replace the HH.

  • Namuro

Wow…the Insect Staff is seriously awesome! It’s like a Hunting Horn + a Katana. I’m so gonna use it before anything else!

I’ve also been curious about the Hunting Insect. I was hoping that there’ll be different insects for each staffs, but to be able to choose a combination of the insect and the staff? That’s just amazing. Not to mention you can raise it Pokémon style! I am so in love with this game…

Come to me already! My pre-order babies!!! 。゜ヽ(´Д`)ノ゜。

  • insect staff sounds overpowered im very curious to see it in action

    • Yeah, I don’t even play MH and even I think this staff sounds overpowered. What’s the drawback?

      • J_Joestar

Probably a lower base damage output?
Like how a Hunting Horn without any buffs tends to be underpowered compared to most other weapons.

        • possibly one of the screens has it at 279 at rare 1 thats slightly more powerful then a gunlance but still below long swords

          • J_Joestar

The visible number shown isn’t really reliable until you know the weapon’s class multiplier.

      • Exkaiser

No ability to defend, lower damage output than other combo-based weapons like the Longsword or Switch Axe, middling reach.
Several weapons have methods to buff the player. This doesn’t sound overpowered to me- just more flexible based on player input, since the bugs are customizable separate from the staff.

        • ronin4life

And getting the buffs looks like it will be very involving: needing to target specific parts and even non-target monsters to get the exact mixture just right WHILE fighting…

It will take a great deal of skill to pull it off to the point of seeming overpowered, and by then isn’t that the point of MH anyway for all the weapons?

  • linkenski

The staff of overpower would be my guess. I can’t wait for this game!

    • J_Joestar

We don’t really know how hard it is to aim for each specific extract, and it may vary significantly between each monster.
As a HH user, it took some time to memorize just the note I needed for every important song, it would be even tougher if I needed to hit a monster at specific points just to get each note.

  • Anna Scruton

I want this game, SO BAD.

  • J_Joestar

Genel Sertas sounds pretty brutal, eating his own allies to regain stamina…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

OP staff that means the monsters are going to be 10 harder to take down……..>:} good

  • KuroNathan

  • Pockystix

I think I will be maining Charge Axe, with Gunlance on the side

    Hybrid weapons FTW~

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

looks like ill be a jack of all trades in MH4~ so many weapons to play~ maining on a single weapon makes the game stale~ :3

  • ps3? no ps vita? no xbox? no but xbox in japan all when want is MH4. i dont want to buy a Nintendo 3DS just to play one of my fav games

    • manowaffles

And I don’t want to support Microsoft to buy Fez and support an indie developer who has become disillusioned with the industry.

Sony screwed over Capcom with blocking the international release of MH3P & MH3PHD, so don’t expect MH back on Playstation in the near future.

Microsoft has even less chance. Don’t expect a game that still gathers 80% of it’s sales in Japan to appear on a system that that looks at Japan as 2nd class gamers.

    • Chris Evan Jonance Ingeniero

if you want monster hunter 4 … then buy a 3ds… if you dont want to buy a 3ds… then suck it :3 … jokes aside~ MH4/MH3U is a strong enough game for you to buy a 3ds~
