Breath of Fire 6 Announced For Phones, Tablets And Browsers

By Ishaan . August 1, 2013 . 2:44pm

Today, Capcom announced Breath of Fire 6 as an RPG headed to mobiles, tablets and browsers. The game was announced as part of a large number of titles being brought to social and mobile platforms in Japan.

The game is being built specifically for touch screen devices, but you’ll also be able to play it on PC and continue the game where you left off on other platforms.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Capcom stated that they are in the process of evaluating whether Breath of Fire 6 will be released outside Japan.

Atleast the music in the homepage is good.

    • Nightmare637

LOL I love this, I dig through ALLLLLLL the anger and hate and find the ONE somewhat happy comment at the bottom lol

      thats awsome!

      • Wappuli

Character sprites arent that bad looking either.
But that is the limit of positivity for this game from me, and most likely from this whole comment section.

  • SirRichard

    Oooooooooooh boooooooooooy.

Capcom really are throwing it all behind social and browser games, today they announced like 10 of the things, including this. And while it’ll help staunch their financial problems, going heavy on the social market isn’t going to help them for long. Here’s hoping they have a more measured, balanced plan for the next generation.

  • alangato

This is so wrong…why they decided to make this a numbered sequel??!!

How can capcom do this to BoF series??

    • Tenshiken

Remember, this is capcom we’re talking about. They’re no stranger to mistreating their own properties.

    • SiliconNooB

Funny, nothing has been done with the BoF franchise for over ten years, and yet the series feels deader today than it did yesterday… :/

    • Calamity

So more people will buy into it . Same reason SE made FFXI and XIV a numbered installment.

      • alangato

Hmmm, are you saying this is being made that way so it will attract more people into the series?

But those people will problably be a casual public… if this game turn out to be a success and Capcom decides to make BoF 7, will it be on the same line as that one? That would be terrible for this series in my opinion.
Let’s not forget that a lot of older fans of the series are also really pissed =/

        • Calamity

Pretty much. Though in this case, they’re just trying to be on the platform/hardware with the most amount of eyes, gamer or not, to which I agree is rather treacherous.

        • Solomon_Kano

Less “attract more fans to the series” and more “attract fans of the series to this largely unrelated social game”.

BoF was a JRPG of the purest sense, so I doubt there’s going to be much overlap, but using the name ensures they at least catch a few people from that fanbase. Better than starting out with a nameless IP from their perspective.

          • supervamp

Implying this won’t be a continuation or that social games can’t be rpgs.

          • Solomon_Kano

Continuation of? Each BoF is self-contained, so how would that work?

And where did I imply social games can’t be RPGs? I said it probably won’t have much overlap with fans of the originals. Would you like to me to go more in depth as to why I think that?

          • Ferrick

though all BoF stars blue haird males name Ryu (BOF 4 was the last ryu! *hides*), not a red haired male named adol christin… wait…

          • Solomon_Kano

            Adol lololol

          • Ferrick

lol nice idea, when that goes stateside, i’m going to name my character as Adolololololol

          • Solomon_Kano

Perfect. And if you can have a female character, I’ll name her NINAHAHAHAHAHAHA

          • Ferrick

            lol why not NANANANANANANBATMANNNNN

          • Solomon_Kano

Bats is too cool for social games lol.

          • Ferrick

            lol, then how about Hananananahahahahaha

          • supervamp

It just sounded like you were saying that they were just using the name to draw people in, like they couldn’t make another one with a story of its own.

          • Solomon_Kano

No, no, no. Certainly not what I meant.

The trend has been though, that companies make these social games as spin-offs or sequels to existing franchises to first grab fans of that existing IP before moving onto new customers rather than spending the time to create and market a new IP.

That’s just the way it is, not a statement as to their ability to make this its own thing.

          • Michael Harrison

I might be wrong as I’ve only ever finished the original game, but I thought 2 and 3 were sequels to the two endings of 1 (3 being far more concrete), and 4 takes place in a different reality than them but a character crossed over.

      • Ereek

XI and XIV actually keep with what made the series appealing though. Job systems, a good story, crystals, airships, so on. XI probably has the best overall story and lore in the series.

I see no Ryu, I see no Nina. I see no dragons. Hell, I see no demi-humans. These are what defined the series.

    • Edrian Gaspar

yap i know,,,but once its released in western itll be gud hehe

  • Ereek

Look, I know I’ve been asking for a Breath of Fire VI for years.

But this is horrible. A social game?

    It’s disgusting.

I’ll take back my wishes if this goes away.

    • Donpablo

You didn’t happen to make your wish with a monkey paw did you?

      • Ereek

        I-I didn’t mean to. I swear!

      • Edrian Gaspar

then dont play the game,,,,hehe ;)

      • ForteWily

No, he did it on a QB.

    • konsama

Remember to always be specific on what you wish? If you say you want a massage but don’t specify by who or wat, imagine the consequences. xP

  • Derek E Nay

You know… it would be less hurtful if they brought some of the social games over here to the states. I only hear that they are bad, but since I don’t experience it myself I can’t not really form my own opinion :(

  • WyattEpp

Do I even need to dig up a facepalm image for this? Just use your imagination, I…I just can’t.

  • endril

  • Chris Yuen

First it was Square Enix. Now it’s time for Capcom: The Fall. Let’s see what else they can do to redeem themselves in some of our eyes. (Square Enix did that plenty with that joint FF15/KH3 announcement during E3. If only they will announce a official sequel for The World Ends With You on the 3DS…)

    • Volta

I wont call that kind of move a “redeem” from them. They are just bloating more the already convoluted KH franchise for money and also recycling a 2006 project (versusXIII) numbering it XV just because they are a bunch of lazy developers.

    • Farid Belkacemi

I heard Deus Ex : The Fall was good though :p

  • Bojan Njegomir

  • James Beatty

I imagine the comment section here isn’t going to be very positive. I’m not a fan, so I can’t comment. I do wonder why they couldn’t put it on digital services like the eshop, PSN, and XBLA though. I’m sure it would please fans more and have a bigger installbase.
Edit: Maybe it’s because it’s being designed for touch devices? Maybe Wii U, Vita and maybe 3DS would’ve worked? Don’t know

    • Ereek

No, that wouldn’t have fixed it. This is not Breath of Fire. This is a random social game that is using the name Breath of Fire to increase its sales.

The first images of this game are not the three most iconic things in the series: Ryu, Nina, or a Dragon (any Dragon). They’re social images of characters no one knows or cares about. Even if they add them as NPCs later, even if they add dragon transformation, it’s still a social game and is not what makes Breath of Fire appealing.

  • Alos88

It looks like they slapped the franchise name onto some generic browser MMO in the hopes that it would sell better. You know what? Go back to “resting” Breath of Fire if this is your idea of reviving it.

  • ZEROthefirst

Tears, nothing but tears. I don’t want this…

  • Michael Connell

Capcom why must you ruin all the great franchises you once had?
And as a big Breath of Fire fan all I can say is screw you Capcom, and may you lose even more money this year and the years to come!!!

  • FFmax

Considering the constant steam of iphone games I knew this was coming. I’m just kinda glad that Breath of Fire isn’t dead anymore. Maybe if this does well they’ll make more games suited to consoles or handhelds.

    • Calamity

If this does well, I suspect 7 will be for mobile.

  • pimpalicious

I try to have your back Capcom, but seriously….f*** you.

  • Tristan Diaz

It would be cool if it came over here, but I can’t say I’m a big fan of their decision with this game.

  • Byas

Do the guys at Capcom JP have a monthly quota of rage that they need to induce on the fans?

    • Ferrick

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

I think this is the third time from this year.

    • Ereek

If they do, those guys must be getting paid damn well, because they do their job.

    • hazelnut1112

Have you been under a rock recently?
Capcom’s whole division is powered by rage. Why do you think they did a slideshow a while back comparing old Dante to gay Brokeback Mountain guys and that new guy to hardcore?

  • Zero_Destiny

I have generally been pretty lenient with Capcom myself, they have done plenty I wasn’t too crazy for over the past couple of years, but I never felt like they were “teh devil” or worth boycotting or something. Through it all, they have done some pretty cool things too and hey, they are a business not a charity. But this …

this feels like a kick in the groin. This just hurts, hurts really bad. Perhaps because Breath of Fire was one of my favorites as a kid, hell I played BoF IV in a very low point in my life when I was growing up, it helped me get through some rough patches back then.

Now with this, I can see that Capcom doesn’t have any faith left in the franchise, their only release for this series in over 10 years, are these short-sited “quick buck” making games. It’s not necessarily surprising after all these years, but it’s a hard pill to swallow.

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, it’s a pity. I’m kinda surprised it took them so long to suck the soul outta this one for a social game though. I mean, they already got Onimusha. :/

      • MrTyrant

I forgot about ONIMUSHA! DAMNN!! I will still refrain of cursing or boycott them just because of Ace Attorney.

        • Solomon_Kano

Even if I wanted to, I’d have nothing to boycott because none of my favorite series still get games anyway lol.

  • Testament

      • Testament

Well I’m glad in a sense that they have finally revived the series. But, they seem to have spat at the BOF series and fans by degrading the series to a social platform. I just want to cry T-T

          • Ferrick

oh go cry me a river, BoF has been dead long before this debacle appeared, when was the last time capcom touched BoF again ? Ten years was it ? Yeah, the series is already deader than megaman, and to reiterate, its capcom what more do you expect, especially considering that this is the era of social media elephant crap, its not all that surprising

The comments are the reason i don’t like fandoms. Fans can be so crazy and stupid for no reason.

Seriously, unless you’ve played the game please refrain from screaming out of your ass.

    • Solomon_Kano

People dislike social games. Point blank, period.

Taking a long-thought-dead franchise, beloved by many, and “resurrecting” it in this form is never not going to be met with outrage.

Maybe it ends up good, maybe not, but this is not what fans of the franchise wanted and they’re making that clear.

      • supervamp

That’s all fine and dandy, it doesn’t make reading the comments any less brain cell killing.

        • Solomon_Kano

Eh, it is what it is.

          • supervamp

It’s disappointing is what it is, you think fandom reaction couldn’t get any worse but then they do

          • epy

Every time I see comments like yours… I wonder “If the comments annoy him so much, why does he read and actively participate in this “brain cell killing” discussion?”

            Aliens, maybe?

          • supervamp

Mostly because i just wanted to know what people thought you’d think there would be more of a balance between the hate and like even some neutral but no it’s mostly just rage
            Uncalled for and uneeded rage

          • epy

          • Testsubject909

Basically you’re failing to understand the emotions of others and are blaming them for being emotional rather then your own inability to read a situation and show compassion.

          • supervamp

No i understand why everyone is being how they are this is a pretty common fanboy response. Doesn’t make it any less stupid

        • Testsubject909

True… Reading your comments feels like my brain cells are dying.

          • supervamp

Too bad I’m not crying over nothing.

      • malek86

I think it’s more like “old fans dislike social games”.

People clearly don’t dislike social games, or game companies wouldn’t be making so many of them.

I almost have to wonder how people will react here, if this game turns out being successful because of the new wave of mobile players. Is a game “legitimized” once it becomes successful?

        • Solomon_Kano

Indeed. Their popularity is why companies continue to make them, after all. I meant the people here though, to be clear.

I’m sure we’ll see the whole “real fans” nonsense pop up if the game’s actually successful.

      • Enzo

I think the worst part is that they are trying to ride the coat tails of Breath of Fire. Breath of Fire is clearly supposed to be an RPG series considering the rest were. Changing the series isn’t always bad, but the way they are changing it they may as well made it a new IP.

        • Solomon_Kano

It’s the nature of social games, unfortunately.

However loosely connected, it’s generally more profitable to release the game under the name of an existing IP so there’s some semblance of a built-in fanbase rather than spending the time and money trying to shape and market it as a new IP.

      • Farid Belkacemi

Nothing to add, sir :) I’m not the biggest fan, but Breath of Fire has (kind of) a special spot in my heart.

    • ElAbuelo69

I am sorry for being a human with expectations and feelings.

I will refrain from being human from now on and instead act as robot and/or sheep as you wish.

      • supervamp

Yeah, getting angry over something like this and repeating the same responses everyone else is being a sheep

        • ElAbuelo69

Not really because I felt it.

You’re asking me to behave one way, I’m not. It’s a personal rage. I’m ok with your opinion of waiting until it’s released, but I’m not ok with you wanting to change the world’s opinion.

          • supervamp

No you mean a small majority of angry fans who think their opinions are absolute fact?

    • MrTyrant

Yeah you would love the game I’m sure of it. More if you played the old ones (sarcasm tone)

      • supervamp

Yeah I liked playing the old ones and am looking forward to this one. Deal with it

    • Warboss Aohd

it’s not about fandom, it’s about taking a series of games people liked, then reviving it in a way almost no one wanted and is met with a great deal of disgust or dislike.

The fact Capcom has done this a few times recently really doesn’t help.

      • supervamp

No no this is completely about fandom only fanboys can get this angry over something that has barely been announced and only has a few screen shots released.

        • RisukuAozora

          Um, no. It’s not.
I think people are more angry that certain games have been appearing on mobiles that would be better suited to the true portable gaming systems: 3DS or Vita.
That and half of the time, the mobile games are social games to boot.

        • Testsubject909

Seems you have low empathy, sympathy and general respect towards long standing franchises.

I suggest you go socialize some more before you come talking online again…

          • supervamp

Yeah because i’m not being an idiot and judging something before it even has a proper trailer or screen shots.
I suggest you come back when your fanboy syndrome cools down

          • Zonder88

“Yeah because i’m not being an idiot…”

You kinda are for your ignorance and tunnel vision.

          • supervamp

            Ignorance to what exactly?
Tunnel vision can be said the same for people screaming about how fail of a company capcom is for this after one news story and not even trying it themselves.

This one of course. Star Ocean had those remakes for PSP not too long ago you see. Then SO4 came out somewhat recently. So, yeah, there was anger but it was mostly disappointment.

BoF has been dead for over a decade. Capcom never even acknowledged its existence and then they go and announce a Breath of Fire that doesn’t look anything like BoF, make it for PC and phones, and have the gall to make it a numbered game. CaPCoM..!!!

Series been dead for 10 years really it doesn’t matter what they do with it. im fine with it as long as it stay true to its root.

    • Enzo

It does matter what they do with it in my opinion. Considering the limitations with focusing on a touch-screen controlled basis, it’s easy to guess how this game will not meet any true fans’ expectations as a game. Also, the fact that it’s being brought to the platforms they are (Mobile mostly), you know what audience they are targeting and how they will make the game to accommodate for that. I really see little to no good for BoF fans, or RPG fans in general.

  • why are people arguing about arguing? if some are mad let them vent it if youre ok with this more power to you, legit or not everyone is entitled to feel how they feel and given what capcom did dragon’s dogma on mobile and vita i wont hold my breath… OF FIRE!

  • kroufonz

it’s far worse then what SE ever did

they even make this crap as NUMBERED BoF title, srsly capcpom:(

NOBODY expects the Capcom Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise!…
Surprise and despair… despair and surprise… Our two weapons are despair and surprise… and ruthless disappointment! Our three weapons are despair, and surprise, and ruthless disappointment… and an almost fanatical devotion to outsourcing… Our four… no… Amongst our weapons… Hmf… Amongst our weaponry… are such elements as despair, surpr… I’ll come in again.

      This made me lol

      BoF: Who are you?!
Capcom: My name is Capcom but you can call me “Capcom the franchise killer”!
Bof: You can’t kill me! I’m fifteen years older!

      • Ferrick

Capcom: Now, old fan – you have one last chance. Confess thy heinous sin of heresy, reject the works of the uncapcomly – *two* last chances. And you shall be free – *three* last chances. You have three last chances, the nature of which I have divulged in my previous utterance.

Fan: I don’t know what you’re talking about!

Capcom: Right! If that’s the way you want it – Cardinal! Poke him with the Reboots!

  • Unlimax

Looks like Capcom following Square steps for “The future of gaming” ~

Worst news ever. I hate you Capcom.

  • TheExile285

    Lol Capcom.

  • Torraint

i used to hope a new BoF announced for Vita.. then capcom announced it as social game

    • TheExile285

      Capcom hates Vita.

After recent news like this, maybe that’s a good thing.

  • yellowmage

OK, Capcom, I know that I (and many others) have told you to bring back Breath of Fire, but I didn’t mean like THIS!!!

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

BoF: Why don’t you just kill me, Capcom?!
Capcom: You have to suffer more. Once your fanbase burns to ashes, you have my permission to die.

Dragon Quarter looks great in comparison.

    • epy

      Dragon Quarter IS great though.

  • ChiffonCake

    Is there any hope left?

  • Guys, nothing here says it’s actually a social game or some sort of GREE title yet. It sounds like they’re making it a proper BoF as far as they’re willing to disclose at this point, just targetted at smaller platforms that are easier to develop for on a budget. Until we know more, this level of outcry is sort of ridiculous.

    • Haseyo

People will never realize that mobile gaming is a thing in Japan. They only consider their NA/EU wants and immediately hate anything different. They always throw out the “they don’t care about the fans.”

      1) Capcom is a JAPANESE company. Their fans greatly trump our fanbase over here.
      2) Any company puts profit over fans, no matter what.

      • Nightmare637

people realize that, doesen’t mean they have to like it though.

        • Haseyo

Stating “I don’t like it” and bashing a company claiming it’s a stupid move are two different things. Everyone’s a business marketing major when it comes to video games.

          • Nightmare637

so? they think its a stupid move let them say its a stupid move hell for all that you know it might be a stupid move.

if they don’t like it let them bash, thats there buisness.

“Everyone’s a business marketing major when it comes to video games.”

I’m not, good for you though.

EDIT:anyway this conversation is ultimately pointless so lets stop with this.

          • Haseyo

Not sure what the “Good for you” part states as I never said I was one either, thus the blind hate statement but sure, we can end this here.

      • mirumu

If the reaction on 2ch is anything to go by, Japanese gamers are just as upset about this one.

Still, they probably don’t represent the mainstream particularly well either.

  • Joshelplex

As mad as people are getting, keep in mind that in Japan, social games on browsers or phones are freaking huge. They actually beat out traditional handheld titles a lot of the time. As much as Id love a proper BoF, this will do better in Japan than an actual BoF would probably do worldwide. Look how well the Onimusha and Megaman games did in this line

    • Testsubject909

Angry Birds beats a lot of console games here in the west.

The userbase for the mobile phone market is far larger then the gaming console based market.

Facebook games are huge in their own rights with extremely huge userbases.

How about we use your argument to get every beloved game franchises out there as some Facebook browser game?

After all… They’ll all do much better financially there, wouldn’t they?

At this point, for me at least… It’s more of a matter of leaving the IP to rest in peace rather then stain it…

  • Slayven19

Whatever I ain’t even mad anymore because I never expected another game anyway especially After BOFV. Its also not surprising because they said they would make social games in the future, its just hitting us faster than expected.

  • Welp I thought that was a joke.

  • Demeanor

It’s like they just raped my childhood. Once upon a time, I was prancing around with my Kaiser Dragon with Infinity+Radiance+Trance… T_T
Why a NUMBERED title for God’s sake?

  • Istillduno

So the best way for a company to celebrate it’s 30th anniversary is to see how badly and how many of the customers who kept it afloat that long they can piss off.

Seriously they should just make a new fanchise for this bs, they just piss off the old fans and phone game casuals don’t know what a Breath of Fire is and why they should bother with number 6 when they haven’t played the first 5 so ****ing the brand for a quick buck will have no positive effects for them.

  • Zind Keeper

I’m just going to throw up over there now, thanks.

  • Herok♞

Honestly I would wait for more info then rage like no tomorrow, after all you can make a full rpg even if its not on normal consoles, but I will wait before raging.

  • Capcom I am very, very sad right now.

  • Brandonmkii

I feel for siliconera. Dealing with this much pessimism is never a fun job.

    • Altin

You must tell me what kind of kush you are taking if you are able to maintain your optimism after this. I surely doubt that you can call this “pessimism” if people are die-hard fans of this series and after countless years all they get is nothing but a big slap in a face with a giant tuna.

In case you wonder, Nosgoth did that for me.

      • Brandonmkii

I really enjoyed all the previous games in the series, but I’m not sure if that makes me a die-hard fan or not, because I don’t foam at the mouth over words like “mobile,” “online,” or “tablet.” I don’t know how anyone can call this a “slap in the face” when we know next to nothing about the game at all.

I reserve that kind of judgement for when the product is actually out there and can warrant a reaction. Passing judgement on something without any knowledge of how it’s going to work is infantile and part of the reason I don’t like fan bases of any kind. When the game is out, and if it’s not that good, sure, rage away. But please wait for such an opportune time.

        • Altin

Let’s say it this way then: You are liking the games, demanding more of them. Nothing comes out and after so many years, you finally get your wish granted. What’s the problem? The game is Online-Based. The Game is, unlike it’s predecessors, coming out for a Mobile Device (Yes it is coming out for the PC as well, but it is very likely to doubt that it will be the Lead Platform). The game has shown none of the aspects which made the previous games so great. Some already mentioned it: Where is Ryu for example?

And I can respect that, honestly – as someone who actually was looking forward to Dragon Age II, I can really respect that. But when your game has the same premise which basically every Squeenix Announcement had thus far – even my optimism can’t endure the sheer fact, that this is going to blow. Not only because it is going to focus on Online Gaming, diminishing any kind of chance that there will be a decent storyline, but just by the sheer premise and the Probability of it just being bad. Want examples? All The Bravest, Every other Mobile Based Game which Capcom has announced thus far, Dragons Dogma Quest and the icing on the blasphemy-cake: Onimusha Souls.

And since I referred Nosgoth; You know why my expectations for this are going to be just as low as for BoF 6? Simple – It is not Legacy of Kain. It does have basically nothing but the least interesting aspect of the previous installments in it: The World. What defined the World in Legacy of Kain? Just to name the obvious: Maybe Kain or Raziel? A gorgetastic atmosphere and single-player experience? I could go on with this rant for endless hours, but I think you might get what I am aiming at.

tl;dr: It is okay if you are one of the people looking forward to this, but don’t judge any other fan of the series for being pessimistic if the odds of given game going to be just like they used to know, are as low as getting Final Fantasy Type-0 over to the West.

          • Brandonmkii

Online doesn’t have to mean bad story. It can still be a fun game without familiar characters. And like I said, we know very little about this game, so saying it “has shown none of the aspects that made the previous games so great” is going a little far. It could be a simple touch screen RPG with character creation and a decent story, with lite social features, instead of the monstrosity people are assuming it’s going to be. Granted, I could be dead wrong, but I still argue that it’s way way wayyyyy to early to be this apprehensive.

          • Altin

You have your view on it – I have mine. Maybe I am just being a little too pessimistic after seeing that many franchises that I keep very dear getting burned at the stake. And heck, If I am wrong, I will give you credit for being right. Everything goes.

          • Testsubject909

Odds are low that the pessimism will be wrong.

            Not impossible… Just improbable.

          • Altin

As previously mentioned, everything goes. I am not optimistic towards this, like at all, but maybe it will be just half of a screwup. I guess only time will tell.

          • Testsubject909

So are you basically saying “Sure, it doesn’t have any of the characters the series always had and maybe it won’t have any of the gameplay elements the series has, but it might be a decently okay smartphone JRPG so that’s a good thing right? Don’t be so apprehensive”?

            There’s an obvious problem here.

Also. Because of what we have here, a generic redhead on top of the idea that this is an online game, it means no Ryu.

Breath of Fire just isn’t going to be Breath of Fire without Ryu…

It’s just going to be a JRPG with the title Breath of Fire slapped on it.

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Oh boy….You’d think that after all that they wouldn’t do the Breath of Fire Series like that..Ah well I can at least be a witness to their progress to see how far will it hit the fan. I got to at least stay positive…but This is something just plain out of the blue. At least be something worth to play on Xbox Live, Playstation Network or even the Nintendo E shop… But I should at least stay tuned…

  • Spider-Man

Capcom used to be my favorite gaming company growing up. Now, I feel nothing but contempt for them nowadays. Another nail for them.

  • Arklight

Don’t forget, we don’t actually know if it’s a SOCIAL game. All we know is that it’s on the mobile platform. You know, along with games such as Infinity Blade and TWEWY Remix.

  • Tatsuya1221

As i said in the open thread, you are dead to me capcom, dead.

Now where are my horse heads…

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

I’ve no choice don’t I? I have to stay tuned and update with this BOF 6…At least be a witness to see if they could even make something out of all this.

  • Katboy

I just died. To add salt to injury, the PC version is a freaking browser game..fucking hell. I hate this world

  • AkuLord3

Well…yeah i know Mobile games and such are popular in japan and blah blah but come on Capcom…you making a sequel number series that people wished to see for years into one of them? I don’t see what’s stopping them from releasing to other stuff as well (well probably when they need more money :L).
    Whatever wait and see

  • Tonton Ramos

    (sighs) Insert kaihedgie comment here…

    This makes me so sad.

  • キロ

Ahh… I recently started thinking more about what happened to Breath of Fire and whether it is coming back, but then I wondered if it would be back only in name and not in content especially with Capcom’s recent reputation…

It seems my greatest fears have been realized…

  • Rytan

I know it’s the popular thing to hate mobile games, but what if this is, you know, the one rare exception where it turns out to be good? It would be pretty amazing for an underdog like BOF to get the best mobile game out of all the countless spin-offs/sequels.

    • Ereek

I’d be okay if it was a mobile game, I’d be okay if it was a handheld game too. As long as they were genuine BoF games with the characters we’ve come to love.

This is an online and social game. Ishaan just didn’t post the image where they show it, in big Romanji “ONLINE,” but it’s in the link in the article. There’s a pretty huge difference.

    • brian

I thought that exception was Chaos Rings.

  • Just Tim

Why do I get the impression that future franchise fates’ are going to be based on their Call of Duty-level profits, just using this as a case in point?

…and watch Capcom turn Nemesis into their official mascot, based on this same move.

  • Sergio Macellaro

Who know with a PSV port…

  • Namuro

Yep…pretty much the same reactions on most websites I’ve been to…

At least the game style looks like a nice throw back to the classic BoF, and you can play it on the PC too…

    • Morricane

Yeah…if they should make it available on PC or something that’s fine for me, actually.

  • Leonard Norwood Jr.

Looking back on the Breath of Fire series, it was my ever JRPG ever on my Super Nintendo and Playstation systems. I loved all BOF games except Dragon Quarter, that was my least favorite game. How to say this next part right…I mean such a good series in my case after a decade and a half of being inactive being resurrected leaves an awesome feeling in my heart, but before I go on I have to at least say this much. Bringing back a game series that’s been gone for so long is never easy. It’s gonna take a lot of planning and work to come up with a way to somehow bring many people to sell such a game and take a risk to give such a VG series another chance. More than just that, A freaking miracle and a good way to bring all old fans and newcomers.

I knew I had to read on after reading the headlines and like I figured, I had doubts and rightfully so. We’re talking about a franchise that has always been such a trandition RPG game, and each BOF game had it stuff going for it back then on its own accord. Now, such a thing is being brought back as a online RPG, probably social (at least from what I’m hearing) in front of all these people besides old fans of the series….It wouldn’t even matter if social games are still the hype, there’s something a little wrong with that. Being on PC and other tablets is fine. It would be nice if “BOF” has even the pleasure of at least being something on Xbox Live, Playstation Network, Nintendo E-shop and such on consoles or portable systems.

I know social games are popular over there in Japan. But even if their new “BOF” game does plenty good over there. I doubt for some reason it’s going to hold the same for the west if they decide to not bring “BOF”, ultimately leaving for those who live there out of the loop from a game, that should have been a very improved version of a tranditional RPG with several more kicks into the gameplay mechanic and story. But I’m overshooting it when it’s just being annouced. However my fears are right in front of me, knowing that it’s just a move from Capcom to take the series in a direction that is questionable from where I see.
I don’t know much until I stick around and find out, but my skepticism may rise depending on how this game is going to be. Either way, I never had that much faith in Capcom’s ability of how they handle their business and franchises in general. If this “BOF” game blows in a way despite even positive reception from most Japan reviewers, the BOF series might as well should have just stayed in hiatus for a bit longer and not this time.
I didn’t say BOF6 instead typed “BOF” because i’m very skeptical at their new game being a numbered title when it’s an online RPG. I just find it strange when ultimately this is what they decided on and I get a bit worried considering their actions with their other games and franchises.

  • DarkWaterClone

    One word “Boo”

  • $36598391

This is pretty pathetic to see Capcom do this to their oldest rpg series
I wonder if they are doing whatever they please if the original guy behind BoF is no longer with Capcom and Biohazard/Resident Evil is being run into the ground
The remake of the 3DS game Capcom freaks out because it’s not successful…
why would it be, people already played it on 3DS, why would everyone buy the same game again, just because it’s been remade so what Capcom
It’s still the same game, same storyline
look at the guy that came up with Resident Evil/Biohazard
    He’s with Bethesda now

  • piichan

sometimes, it feels like capcom is doing this on purpose. like, they don’t know what to do with the games they’ve neglected for so long. so instead of having to explain why they can’t continue making them, they just do crappy ports and, like this, mobile sequels, knowing full well that it won’t sell as much or displease fans. then once the sales reports are out, they’ll be like, “it was below expectations, we told you this wasn’t a good idea but you guys wouldn’t shut up about it, so it’s all your fault. say goodbye to your beloved franchise.”

    • Testsubject909

      Here’s the sad part.

It might actually sell better considering the market in Japan and how widespread the userbase is (Smartphone/browser/PCs). Though for a target audience who’ll most likely not have played a single Breath of Fire game and would purchase it solely because “Hey, it sounds like it’s a game from a long standing series and I keep hearing in passing some people saying great things about it! It’ll make a great addition to my phone games and I’ll see what I’ve been missing out on!” sort of people.

      There is no god…

  • Göran Isacson

    Ooookay. Okay.

Capcom. The world has changed. I get that. Traditional JRPG’s require investments that you may not be willing to put out since the returns aren’t big enough, at least for HD consoles so most of them come for portable formats. I get that too! I am a veritable fountain of understanding right here. So maybe, just maybe, you felt the need to scale things down. Make a BOF game for a portable format because that’s something you think you can pull off and still pull a profit. Okay! Okay I am so ragingly desperate for Breath of Fire I am willing to endure even that! Portable only sequel, I am game, I really am!

All I demand is that this is not a social pay to win game, and that it has a cast of colorful animal-human hybrid characters, transforming into dragons, and Ryu and Nina. That’s cool right? We can do that, right?

*looks into info and sees an artstyle that seems like a wholesale rip-off of Ragnarok Online, no dragons, no Ryu and Nina, and only animal-humans seem to be mooks and enemies

And that was the day the fountain of understanding drained out, and was replaced by the wellspring of wrath. And everybody died. The end!*

    • Testsubject909

The official site shows some generic redhead warrior dude sleeping under a tree.

It saddens me to say but Ryu perished long ago, back on the PS1.

That is when we last saw him. Dragon’s Quarters was a fun game in it’s own right but it certainly did not feel like a Breath of Fire game, and the Ryu featured there was… let’s face it, he wasn’t exactly Ryu. Hell, you were discouraged to use your Dragon powers, something central to the series itself.

Ryu died. Capcom had the opportunity to revive the series.

Instead. They mobbed Ryu’s grave, took the IP name and decided to slap it unto something entirely unrelated in the hopes of increasing their profit.

And no, it doesn’t really matter what information will be drawn from interviews. This feeling is what’ll stick most with just about anyone and everyone who knows anything about Breath of Fire.

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, I am actually a fan of Dragon Quarter, mostly for the atmosphere in it… though I will admit that it is such a HUGE break from the regular mood that I won’t blame people for being turned off of it. But yeah- if nothing else this really does feel like a cheap knock-off, it really does. They’re going to have to present something goddamn AMAZING in order to wash the taste of this out of my mouth…

  • GibbRS

In this day and age when more and more developers are getting away from creating a numbered title in a series, I find it odd they’re announcing a numbered title on a mobile platform for a series that hasn’t been mobile in the past.

Maybe they’ll change it to a 3DS/Vita game at some point if the demand is high enough. I remember years ago when Squeenix announced a new Parasite Eve game, and it was to be a mobile game. My heart broke, like most of the Western fan base, but it eventually switched to being a PSP game. I can only hope the same for this title.

Sort of unrelated, but I’m also still holding out hope we’ll get a Suikoden VI at some point, on a regular home console.

    • Testsubject909

Yes but… You know. 3rd Birthday is generally reviled.

Mainly because of how it ruins the protagonist and turns her into a frail woman in need of protecting.

      Kinda like Other M.

You know there’s a reason why I never join the people who beg for a new Mother/Earthbound game… Sometimes it feels like a good series that had a good run and closed off well should be laid to rest respectfully. They made their impact in gaming history and continue to do so, as long as the game still exists and is accessible for people to play. Plus no matter how old a game can be, it can still be relevant, entertaining and at times feel innovative if it was a great game. Like Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger. Or if you want to go even further back to the NES, the JRPG horror game we never got Sweet Home.

Does that mean they should never get sequels/prequels? No, but only if it’s done right… And sometimes it’s best if instead they weren’t being followed up directly, but rather was followed up by a successor. A spiritual successor. Kinda like how Odin Sphere is a spiritual successor to a much lesser known game Princess Crown.

I’ve always loved the Breath of Fire games. The third being my favorite despite enjoying the fourth just as much, though the fishing in the original SNES being the more pleasant memories of the mini game.

If ever the series was to return in proper form. I would’ve been ecstatic… If it were to never return. I would’ve been content with the ones we would’ve had…

      As it is now?

I’m faced with the same issue I have with other games… A blemish upon an otherwise wonderful series… Okay a second blemish (Dragon’s Quarters. But it was still a fun game… It just didn’t feel like a Breath of Fire game despite various elements of a Breath of Fire game present… Mainly because the game punishes you for using your Dragon powers… And because Ryu doesn’t look like any previous Ryu, superficial I know… and because Nina doesn’t look or feel like any previous Nina…). But I digress.

Y’know… I’m slowly making a mental list of games that I’m okay never seeing another sequel for despite a desire for a proper sequel to be made for them. Mainly because of the worry of a proper sequel being made rather then a cash in or a mess of a game… And the recent track records of companies handling the continuation of beloved series isn’t exactly pristine.

Dude, I was right there with you until DQ. DQ is amazing! I can go point by point why all the “reviled” choices are great. THIS is how you try something different with a franchise. Nowadays every time someone speaks about giving a franchise a different take is “make it a shooter”. NO, SHUT UP! There’s enough shooters already! I don’t need a Megaman X shooter! Geez! This is why this whole “open world” fad is pissing me off. Everyone has to be open world now, screw the elements that make each series unique, WE NEED TO BEAT SKYRIM! …damn it S-E… you make me sad.

I did say Dragon Quarter is still a fun game.

Yes but… You know. 3rd Birthday is generally reviled.

Mainly because of how it ruins the protagonist and turns her into a frail woman in need of protecting.

Really depends on how Capcom goes about this. I want more meaty games for mobile, but not the norm of the bad stuff out there. In other words, don’t slap the title’s name with this just to sell a cheap mobile knockoff. Put some real effort into it and make it a worthy entry for the series.

What a sad sorry path BoF has finally taken. Dragon Quarter was just plain awful, but this…god.

  • Yan Zhao

Its a sad day when mobiles are now a valid platform for actual numbered sequels to games.

Can we keep social games and console games separate please?

Not like this…. not like this…
