Pocket Monsters: The Origin’s First Trailer Shows Many Familiar Faces

By Sato . August 16, 2013 . 8:38pm

In our earlier report, we got a glimpse of the new Pokémon anime, Pocket Monsters: The Origin that will feature a new protagonist set in the Kanto region of the first generation games. While the trailer was shown at the ongoing Pokémon Game Show, the Pokémon Company followed up with an upload of the trailer, just moments ago.

The trailer starts with the line, “To everyone who played Pokémon Red and Green,” followed by a familiar scene of Professor Oak giving the protagonist his Pokédex and his very first Pokémon, which ends up being Charmander, instead of Pikachu as seen in the original series.

We also get a quick look at a Pokémon battle between the protagonist’s Charmander and Brock’s Geodude, and a brief appearance by the Champion Lance, followed by the quote, “The beginning of it all. The world of Pokémon Red and Green will be revived with a new original animation!”

The trailer also shows the rival Green (or Gary) fighting with a Blastoise, so we know which Pokémon he’ll be starting with!

Pocket Monsters: The Origin will air on October 2nd on TV Tokyo at 7 pm.

Update: It appears that Pocket Monsters: The Origin is indeed a TV special.

So like… Is the other Pokemon anime done? Or are they still making episodes for that too? I kind of stopped keeping up with pokemon for the past 13 years so I’m not sure.

Also I wonder if this will have a ton of episodes as well. Would be nice if they keep it to 26 episodes or less.

    • 하세요

Ash and Pika ain’t going anywhere, that’s for damn sure.

    • InfectedAI

Old series is still ongoing. Ash is still a kid after a decade. This is a one off special. Not a full series.

    • Renaldi Saputra

as long as they still make new pokemon, then it will be endless

  • AokiShizuku

If Pokemon Special and Pokemon B/W 2 anime trailer taught me anything, it’s that Pokemon has the potential to be a great anime for the older audience. Please let this be that anime…

    • konsama

That is as long it doesn’t have dubs like that BW2 anime trailer had. >_>

      • Nanaki

They barely even talked in that one.

        • konsama

Did you even want them to talk more?

          • Nanaki

Why would I? It was there to advertise the games. A few voices aren’t going to alter my judgement of anything. It was the style and presentation that drew me in with that trailer.

          • konsama

Then i don’t get your statement on they barely talking on the trailer, it was bad enough with the few lines they had, whether they spoke much or less won’t change it was some awful dubs. I actually loved the trailer when it was just shown in japanese (inb4weaboo).

And going back on topic, I don’t want to see this show with voices like that.

      • French

The dubs were fine in my opinion, and if they bring it over whether you like it or not they’re gunna dub it

        • konsama

Ok i respect you liked them. But again, i don’t care if they dub it if it was brought, that’s not the problem at all and you’re missing the point of what i’m trying to say, it’s the QUALITY of it what i been talking about.

Even if you don’t mind them, they are still on subpar in quality compared to other dubs anime related.

      • Sergio Briceño

HHmm… Seeing how it was an ad, and you saw both (english and japanese) versions. I don’t see how you are complaining XD obviously you have no trouble watching unlicenced material in it’s original audio track, so just wait until it gets fansubbed and download it.

Not trying to promote piracy, but if you “already” do that…

    • Renaldi Saputra

sadly no, pokemon is more concerned on younger audiences.. if they care more of older fans, they won’t make much profits.. most of kids love pokemon

    • Koibito888

I wish. But I too remember the special with Ethan and Lyra T^T

  • Ixbran

I thought the Rival’s name was Blue, and the girls name was Green.

    • Highasthesky

In Japan the first games were red and green and the third edition was blue, Outside of Japan we got blue twice with the limitations of red and green (Pokemon and such) sure someone else can explain that much better :P

      • Time Sage

The code of Red/Green was very fragile and wasn’t up for being locliazed (Also the pokemon sprites looked way off model in many places) so they took the code of blue and sprites of blue, swapped in the the wild pokemon and trade lists from red/green and released it as Red/Blue

      • Red and green were released first in japan, both games had small issues (mostly graphical and sound issues like the lavender town theme being high pitched) that were fixed with japanese blue editon.

Red and blue editions from the west were based from the japanese blue but with pokemon from red and green respectively.

    • Luigi87

The rival was Green in Japan, as the original release over there was Red/Green.

    • Arcana Wiz

as everyone said in japan they released green, red and blue, with later they became the name of the protagonists
      Red- Hero
      Green – Rival
Blue – Girl who appears on leafgreen/firered

  • It’s Muthafraggin’ Green, I see.

  • This is all kinds of yes. ALL KINDS OF YES.

I see you’re missing 1 more like vote to hit 100. Np I got this.

  • I’m impressed that the announcer pronounced “origin” correctly.

    • 하세요

I’m surprised there’s no Japanese word for “origin.”

  • キロ

I am looking more forward to this than Pokemon X and Y! ^^

    • Renaldi Saputra

at least this will refresh us of Ash/Satoshi’s retard over the time

  • Surgeon of Death

I am legitimately pleased with this…..ITS JUST PURE WIN!

  • Alexandra Cordes

Just please don’t let Red or Green be voiced by women. Pleeeease.
It will be so adorable to see them fight–I mean, what. It’s not like I ship them or anything…

    Consarnit, I ship it. :(

    • ninjabart122

Do the VAs being women somehow make them more womanly? I normally don’t have problems with what gender the VA is as long as they do a good job that fits the character appropriately enough.

      • Alexandra Cordes

Just a personal preference for characters I ship together.
        Nothing more.

        • AkuLord3

Then don’t say stupid stuff…you know the reason why they have female VA do some boy characters. Your preference doesn’t mean anything

          • Alexandra Cordes

I am allowed to voice my opinion.
I know it isn’t a popular one, but it isn’t stupid.

    • 하세요

They are kids, so chances are they’ll be voiced by a woman, at least Red. I’d rather know he’s voiced by a woman than some dude with a creepy high pitched voice.

      • Jake Joe

The Epic battle cry from Son Goku to Monkey D. Luffy says otherwise. Of course I’m talking about the Japanese Seiyuu.

        • AkuLord3

Goku’s Japanese VA isn’t pitched or anything and you may not enjoy it but its been like that in japan for years and they’re fine with it especially the creator

          • Solomon_Kano

Considering he called the seiyuu’s cry “epic”, I doubt he doesn’t enjoy it.

          • Renaldi Saputra

goku is voiced by an approximately 80 years old lady

    • LanceCS

“B-b-but my cute yaoiz boyz =(((“

      • Alexandra Cordes

    • FlyingPony

I agree, to an extend. Some seiyu can do a great boyish voice imitation (Naruto seiyu come to mind, man she can do a good rash, slightly immature boy impression), but many I’ve heard from my anime and games experience, failed to fully mimicking a boy’s voice.

There are plenty times that I heard the hint of woman voice during the watching and playing, which can be annoying considering the character is not a woman. Especially when the boy is more boyish type character (like ASH) and not the feminine type.
Even in the Pokemon dub that I watch from time to time, sometimes I can hear the womanish voice when ASH is grunting, panting, laughing.. which leave a bad taste on my tongue.

I also notice in the Smash Bro Melee, Red have rather feminine voice. While I can easily ignore it, it will be better to let a better female seiyu, or man seiyu, or simply a boy doing the voice acting.

  • Godman

I had to watch the trailer twice just to retain the epicness

  • grayson gee

If this becomes a series I hope it becomes successful enough to continue into the other regions. Other than that , YEEAHHHH!!!!!!!

    • InfectedAI

It’s a one off special unfortunately. Hopefully it’s as long as a movie.

  • konsama

I wonder if this will feature an original story or actually follow Red adventures, does that mean we’ll actually see MC become a champion?

  • Herok♞
    • Detrimont

it’s based on his Firered/leafgreen design

    • Guest

I’m pretty sure it’s based from FireRed /LeafGreen versions http://i.imgur.com/cEzVWXN.png

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

        Looks far more badass here.

        • Suicunesol

Can’t a boy laugh and smile once in a while? :(

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

Hah, but I think its the hair. Its shorter in the anime

          • Guest

I think is his whole face, it’s smaller xD

          • Suicunesol

That’s because he’s mostly shown as a younger boy in the trailer.

If you look at the part with Lance talking to Red, you can see that Red is older and has the slightly longer hair you’re looking for. So it looks like he’s going to age some in the anime/movie/OVA.

          • Sardorim

He’ll age?! YES! After all these years of Ash being stuck as 11 the new one is going to age and actually grow/mature!

Take my money, take it all!!!

          • Sergio Briceño

            Did he turn 11!!?? WHEENN!!!???

        • Arcana Wiz

yep, in this anime red appears to be more chubby, his chin is larger.

      • Renaldi Saputra

        this design looks better

    • Suicunesol

Yeah, if they really wanted to be retro they’d use the original Satoshi Tajiri design.

But I’m okay with this, really.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      me too

    • Renaldi Saputra

this design made Red somewhat being evil or nasty

  • IshimaruKaito

    OH EM GEEE!!!!! *the feels*

  • ギャビン

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

That original Brock looks so weird. I hope this is a true series and not just some special

    • InfectedAI

      It’s a special.

  • Guest

Even if it just ends up being a one-time special/movie, it could start a serialized anime of its own when proven successful.

  • Vulpis

Huh. Looks like it might run closer to the games? Maybe even have a Red that’s not as much an idiot this time? ;-)

  • AuraGuyChris

It is confirmed to be a special.

  • ninjabart122

An anime adaptation of the Pokemon Adventures manga would be really neat. It’s apparently the closest approximation of the world that the series creator had wanted to portray.

    • Arcana Wiz

I think that gamefreak considers it to be too mature for the target demographic of them: kids… i mean in the manga there are pokemon getting really hurt, arbok cut to pieces, pokemon eating pokemon…. they dont want to take risks.

      • British_Otaku

On top of that, from the little I experienced of Pokemon Adventure, it doesn’t seem that good at conveying the games at all still.

I wouldn’t call it “mature” (not even a higher age rating by a year) than the source material or long running anime but yeah.

        • KingRuff

I don’t really understand, what do you mean by that? The current anime does a far worse job of portraying the games. Nobody cares if a Pokemon show doesn’t follow the games 100%. That’s why we have the games in the first place. Another point; Pokemon Special is definitely targeted at a higher age group than the Pokemon anime, there is no denying that. When Charizard burns Ash he has those funny comedic effect burns. In Special, if Charizard burns you, you die. You must be thinking mature only refers to games like GTA or Mortal Kombat or something. Maturity comes in levels its not just one or the other.

          • British_Otaku

On the “no one cares about an accurate adaptation, that’s why we have the original work”. I would agree I’m an outlier on the subject, I like my adaptations clean cut and combed with a suit and tie with a minimum of changes or as silly parodies which capture the spirit of the work almost all of the time (Windwaker’s Logbook by Oyster and the better chapters of Dragon Ball SD).

Both series don’t really fit my tastes and the original anime barely get a pass because nostalgia. I do find some enjoyment out of seeing protagonists grow in Special though.

On maturity, Pokemon Special runs in a children’s magazine and I can find gruesome murder on the basis of adultery in Detective Conan almost any week. I’ll agree that Pokemon Special takes the little things (fire and electricity can kill you – zapping for comedy isn’t a joke) more seriously, but someone dying in a work for children is hardly out of reach.

If it is a higher age group, I find that group a bit hard to define with confidence as a something above Pokemon’s TV anime. Even with maturity in degrees, I find the difference fairly negligible.

    • Renaldi Saputra

main anime? they won’t do it.. they’ll lose kids’ charm, bcos kids are their biggest foundation..

for special episodes, still possible, though

      • fawzowz

        And we’re actually one of Ash’s victim ;w;

        • Renaldi Saputra

      • Sergio Briceño

It’d be great if we got these once in a while.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

RED!!! You are moving on to my turf. Bring it! lets see who anime will have a the bigger fan base!

*Pokemon Origins beats the original anime by a landslide *

    • ninjabart122

I never knew the Pokemon fanbase was divided over who has the bigger fanbase.

Although it’s kind of an unfair match considering that the original anime’s been out for more than a decade.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

Recycled for more then a decade

    • 하세요

Preeeeettty sure Ash will still kick Red’s ass in a fanbase battle. Everyone knows who Ash and Pika are. As the actual game players, naturally we’ll enjoy this a little more.

    • Oh, it’s a MegaPikachu.

      • KingRuff

        I thought this was MegaPikachu.

        • Renaldi Saputra

          whut? so it becomes fire/electric

however, sadly there will be no MegaPikachu for sure

This poster is fucking perfect and I need one right away.

    • Arcana Wiz

They really know what pokemon it’s the most popular of generation 1… Charizard forever!!!!!

      • Sardorim

I eagerly await the announcement of MegaCharizard being Fire/Dragon as he’s the best and deserves only the best!

        • Vash bane

          yes yes……and YES!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      I’m crying

    • Renaldi Saputra

      great pict

  • Just Tim

This is canon to the games, correct? I sincerely hope we’d get to learn how did Lance become so hax (really, an underleveled Dragonite?).

  • JNT

  • Asura

Animation still unfortunately follows the path of the original show, in that the choreography is terrible…
Still frames on contact with action lines in the background… sigh.

    • Suicunesol

We haven’t seen enough to make that judgement. And the action lines aren’t nearly as bad.

Considering this is Production IG in addition to OLM, I’m expecting more than standard Pokefare.

      • Asura

I hope so. I want one fluid action-reaction sequence with no scene change per episode – that ALONE would make me happy.
I’m not getting my hopes up just in case.

    • EverEndingStory

We’ve only seen two shots of fighting – and the character animation, at least, looks to be a step up (very reminiscent of the kind of animation you see in Mamoru Hosoda films, though not at the same caliber), so that’s a good sign that the fight animation will as well (I don’t think I’ve ever seen an anime that had good character animation and not have good fight animation – fight animation is both easier and is likely to have more money dumped into it).

    • LanceCS

Both animation and character design look like run-of-the-mill Kyoani moeblob.

  • Pockystix

so. . . we gonna see Green?

  • 果林

They better have a parody of charizard being unable to fly

  • grayson gee

Wait, since this is based off the game, do you think they might use those tech sounds for the Pokemon?

    • Suicunesol

Probably more realistic (but vaguely similar) cries.

  • protofox

awww yeaaahh gary mother***kin oak is back..i mean..ahem..blue…blue is back.

  • anthony apduhan

I kinda have a feeling that this Red design will be on Smash Bros. 4

  • NightzeroAX

    Should’ve been done……. A LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME AGO.

    • Arcana Wiz

yes, they even already did it for generation 2.

    • Renaldi Saputra

      forgot about Pokemon Chronicles?

      • Scrooge_McDuck

Isn’t Pokemon Chronicles still set Ash’s universe?

        • Renaldi Saputra

          no, it wasn’t

          • Writetyper

It is, actually. Jun’ichi even fights Satoshi one time in the main series, while mentioning Kenta and Marina by name.

  • Arcana Wiz

if they are making it for the old fans, they could make it a little more serious, cause everyone that played red/blue it’s already past the target demographic of the Ash anime.

    • EverEndingStory

It seems like it will be. . . what with the more toned-down color palette and the stronger animation, it seems it will, if not completely cater to older fans, at least offer something to appeal to more mature tastes.

  • KazukiNanbu

    I…don’t like Red desing

  • Internet is Crash

    Smell ya later, Ash!

  • TrannyMagic

stopped watching pokemon after Misty was replaced but I definitely want to get into this! hopefully she’ll show up and the way the announcer pronounced the title sent a tingling sensation down my spine, which usually = positive goodness.

  • AndyLC

Poor Bulbasaur, even when the trainer’s name is Green he picks Squirtle instead…

    • InfernoCommander

Well.. MC did pick Charmander and the rival always picks the opposite.

  • moln6472

Pokemon anime was always made as an “advertisement” for games. So if I’m guessing right The Origin may be a prelude to re-release of 1st gen games on 3DS VC. Or maybe they just struck with nostalgia.

    • Renaldi Saputra

just like what they did with Pokemon Chronicles..

    • WingsOfEternity

or another RBY remake using X/Y’s engine would be interesting.

      • British_Otaku

Have they even remade the 3rd Generation of games yet?
I imagine the RSE fanbase would resemble the Majora’s Mask one after OoT3D came out and Wind Waker HD was announced.

        • Steven Higgins

No they have not. I don’t mind another R/B/Y/FR/LG/remake, but I wish they’d do R/S/E first. Especially since I never had the chance to play Emerald.

  • Renaldi Saputra
  • ndjn3979

Do we REALLY need more Pokemon?

    • zaidandzhadow

More than we really need more tekken

      • alixraen

Crossed the line with that one, considering Tekken’s been around longer…

        • zaidandzhadow

That doesn’t means it’s better nor’ good

          • alixraen

            They’re both good series.

    • Kaihedgie

  • Theob Vious Choice

For the people talking about Pokemon Adventure… I think before that the least they could have done was killed Ash off, figuratively if not literally.
The anime would have been so much better if they at least had different protagonists each season, but no; we started with an awful protagonist, we still have an awful protagonist…. and he’s still ten.

    • Renaldi Saputra

kids love Satoshi & Pikachu.. that’s why

      • Kind of like Digimon and the different protagonists per Season, this is what I like more about the non-Ash Pokeverse anime.

        • Renaldi Saputra

not only different person, but different personality too after all (look at tamers & xros wars)

  • Anime10121
  • C_Diamond

Fighting the first gym with a under leveled charmander yea…i remember that.

    • golden izanagi

think that was hard I remember having a hell of a time waiting to get a butterfree in pokemon yellow just to stand a chance against the first gym leader considering you start out with a pikachu.

      • MarineFS12

The easiest way to beat the first gym leader in pokemon yellow was to catch a Mankey outside of Viridian City towards the Pokémon League. All you had to do is raise him up until he learned Low Kick, which is super effective against heavy pokemon

        • 657rod

I beated it with Pikachu as a kid with quick attack (had nightmares with that battle for days).

  • Bunny_in_wonderland

Thank GOD it’s just an OVA and ONLY for Red and Green. Cause I admit that the way the manga just put Gold and White/Touko was just…. down right awful. And its nice to make it like this. Though I like Ash better since I found Red as a protagonist to be boring and won’t give the morals, lessons on what Ash does. Just saying my opinion.

  • artemisthemp

Hopefully this TV Special is to test water to see, if a Pokemon with Red as Main character can run.

  • RichyGaming

Charizard looks a bit fatter than usual lol.

  • French

finally, no more ash, thats mostly why i am happy. im happy also because this is from the beginning

  • TruSpindash

This looks great, hoping it also leads to specials for the other generations along with another one for generation two.

I flipped out at the chance that it could have been Pokemon Special.

  • Hakai Ouji Vegeta #BADMAN

Stopped watching Pokemon years ago, but this shit looks awesome!

  • Randgriz

The new animation style alone is a breath of fresh air.. and to know its set in the original 151 pokemon red and blue time is icing on the cake.

  • Foxeh Shihōin

needs to be more than just a special.. but im not gonna complain.

  • Foxeh Shihōin

too bad it isn’t more than just a tv special…

  • Joseph Santee

Oh my god, I’m FREAKING OUT!

  • British_Otaku

I’m importing this so hard when it gets a release on a disc.

  • Steven Higgins

Please let this become a regular anime. With actual character development that he keeps and possibly a new protag for each season. Please! Or at lest have a special for each Gen

  • Bacon_n_Lettuce

I like the random accent switch when he says “the origin.”

  • Vash bane

i still have my fire red XD

  • Anon-non

The hero’s name is Red, so I can assume that guy in the green shirt is… Aqua!

  • Ben Sylvia

Ugh, why can we never get an alternative to Ash in the anime?

I bet Red will beat Brock on his first try.

    • ShadowDivz

Whether he does or doesn’t. Il like him more than ash.
Seriously why can’t their be an alternative to Ash? Have ash aimed at the kids and have someone who isn’t so much of a freakin dumbass to have his water type fighting a thunder type.

  • Croix Zapp

    WHY isn’t his hair black?
No annoying pikachu jumping around? Hell yeah!!

  • Oh my god I am so up for this. I wonder if TPCI and NoA will bother to bring it over?

  • Michael Cortez

Can you just imagine when this anime airs… A remake of pokemon red and green for nintendo 3ds!!!!! It would be awesome
