Namco Bandai have been quite busy registering trademarks this month, but the only Tales game that has been formally announced thus far is Tales of Symophonia Chronicles. Jump brings us news about Tales of Link, a Tales game for smartphones, and the main characters in it.

Sara

“Important note for starters: Never give up!”

Sara is a new adventurer who left her village for a certain reason. She meets Rippi along her journey, as they both search for the “Savior”. The way she dresses really stands out. She also wears bloomers.

Rippi

“I’ve witnessed your power earlier. You must be the Savior.”

Rippi is a fairy who’s been ordered by Leone to recover the “Seed of Disaster”. She serves under the Savior, who has the ability to purify the seed. Rippi has the appearance of a hairy Mormo, who walks on four legs, and also carries a smartphone around its neck.

Shiza

“What’s the difference between the power to protect, and the power to destroy? They’re both violent.”

Shiza is a swordsman, whom the Saviors in charge of purifying the Seed of Disaster meet along their journey. He seems to have tenacious thoughts about power. Shiza’s appearance is characterized by his multiple swords he carries: a great sword on his back, three katanas on his wasit, and two kodachi swords.

Leone

“The disaster will be stopped by all means. I will stop it.”

Leone is a goddess who managed to escape her troubles when the Seed of Disaster’s seal came undone. In order to suppress the seed from blooming, she currently isn’t able to move. She has then passed on her powers to the fairy Rippi, who has been entrusted to recover the Seed of Disaster.

Jump also reports that there’s a possibility we’ll be seeing past Tales characters in the game. The fairy Rippi will also have the ability to change into different forms.

Tales of Link is scheduled for release this fall on smartphone devices.

So we finally get a Tales of game with a female protagonist(I guess Xillia may count, but that was more of a split choice)… and it’s for smartphones…

    *flips 5000 tables*

EDIT: Well… maybe it will be good.. I hope it is… I mean, I am not as pissed that it is on smartphones, more like I am pretty sure this may be a bad game, since most smartphones are. If I see some promising gameplay, I’ll be psyched for it… but then be upset due to maybe no chance of coming to america.

    • Brandonmkii

Sophie was more of a protagonist than Asbel was. Heck, I just play as ladies in ALL tales games. There’s always a female protagonist that way. Also Tales of The World could have a lady lead.

      • zferolie

True, I always considered Sophie more of the lead then Asbel, but that wasn’t how they marketed the game really.

I also played as the females in all the tales games(Phantisa: Suzu, Abyss: Anise(so awesome), Eternia: Farah, Symphonia: Sheena(I just wish she could summon more often), Symphonia 2: Marta, Legendia: Chloe, Vesperia: Rita and Judith, Graces: Sophie, Xilla: All 3 :D

True, World let you choose. I need to go replay world… I enjoyed it, but didn’t get far… should I redownload it for my vita…

Anyway, the point is really I would like to see a game with the female always being shown as the main character.

    • Suicunesol

Where’d you read that the protagonist was female?

      • zferolie

It says right in this article. Sara and it uses female pronouns. I assume this is the protag.I doubt they would tell us anyone but the protag first.

        • Suicunesol

You shouldn’t assume the first character in a list is the protagonist.

Not to mention that there are three girls and one guy. In terms of JRPGs, that screams the typical “boy with harem”.

          • zferolie

That is true, i shouldn’t assume, but it seems very odd to announce a new series, and not include the main character.

Plus, the woodsman doesn’t sound like the story revolves around him, if judging just by these descriptions. But again, I could be wrong.

          • Suicunesol

Oh hell. The girl is probably the main character with the swordsman as the second protag. I just realized Rippi is an animal and not a human girl. >_>

          • zferolie

Ah. I thought she was some sort of fairy at first myself.

          • Suicunesol

It’s apparently a hairy cat-like fairy beast thing that talks.

  • Alexander Aubert

my love and excitment……. turned to hate

  • School Idol Addict

    … *Sigh*

  • Pyrotek85

I wouldn’t necessarily mind if they did a release for iphone/android,as long as it felt comparable to other handheld games on the 3ds/vita.

    • zferolie

Well, we can hope. I mean, if they make this a full fledged Tales of Game, and not something like that FF all the bravest… it may be good. Smartphones have some good power to make a decent 2D sprite based tales game(2D for Battles I mean, and most likely will be sprite based)

  • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

So you guys keep posting stuff like Tales this and Tales that knowing thats all iOS or some pachinko shovelware – why you do this? To make us rage at Siliconera for ruining our days? ;p

    • s07195

I’m pretty sure Siliconera doesn’t choose their news like that.

  • psycho_bandaid

After all of the awesome announcements lately Bamco needed to troll us a little bit. I am OK with this.

  • Tenshigami

If this were any other franchise I might be pissed at the announcement of a cellphone game, but Tales seems to be pretty consistent at making games on consoles as well. This isn’t “in place” of the kind of game everyone is asking for like Breath of Fire, Star Ocean, or the Mana series, but a supplement.

This will be an “escort” title at best. But the next console “mothership” title is coming, I can almost guarantee it.

    • Barrylocke89

I agree. As long as “main” games are coming to consoles and handhelds, it doesn’t bother me if Namco wants to bolster their wallet with some smartphone titles too. I feel kind bad for the Breath of Fire fans who were waiting for so long to hear about a BoF6. At least one of my favorite series is still going strong on its original homebase.

    • Pockystix

I’m actually hoping for some escort titles on the 3DS and Vita

the Tales of team are actually really good at making those lovable spin-offs~

      • Spirit Macardi

Spin-offs that never come overseas unless they can do it for cheap like with Tales of the Abyss on 3DS…

    • D H

Bwah… Star Ocean in that kinda throws me off… Sure it’s been awhile since Last Hope normal version came out, but, Star Ocean’s always been a 1 game a generation kinda thing, and we’re just now hitting the next because of the extended life cycle of the PS/3/60. I don’t really feel slighted by the mobile game, rather, I’m glad to see anything Star Ocean come out, because it means they haven’t buried it like my poor Chrono Break…

  • Rogerrmark

    Hopefully,Zestias/Zestoria will become a PS3 title(or even Bibliotheca,derp,Namco is unpredictable)

  • Jesse

Well, at least that’s only one of the many trademarks they have. It DID kind of sound like a smaller game just from the name, too.

You’d think they’d be fine with the three(four?) mobile games they ALREADY have, though.

  • Milla

not to be rude but namco has ALOT of mobile side games of tales of… and there are many more to come since the japanese are glued to there phones :P

    • DyLaN

Generally, Asians are pretty much glued to the phones. I know my country did.

      • Xaxal_Ravenguard

I concur with this, though mobile gaming probably will decline as the market oversaturates.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

in the states people are SUPER glued to their phones. All my cellphone does is call people ….what? you never heard of that kind of magic?

  • Ooh Bee

Dunno why people are getting upset as if there won’t be another main Tales game or something. They’ve always made side games.

    • zferolie

Well, yes there are always side games, but I think people are upset because most cellphone games suck. Also, most Tales Side games never come to america/europe. I think the only one that did was Tales of the world radiant mythology.

Me personally though? I like seeing female lead characters, and I love Milla because of that, but she shared the spotlight with Jude. This one may be the first to have the female be the main character, and I really want it to be a main tales game because of that… but I doubt it will.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Sara:

“Important note for starters: I give up on this game !”

I knew it was going to be A Cell phone…….

Lets hope the others are something else…….

    • DyLaN

I give up on trying to make ppl see the better side of things.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

I’m not butthurt I knew it was going to be a phone game from the start, wait whats the good side?

        • DyLaN

It might not be as bad as ppl think or it will have a decent plot/characters?

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

This is not the Tales announcement I was waiting for.

  • DyLaN

We won’t get them anyway so not sure why are ppl so butthurt over it. And its not like this is anything new either.

Tht said, I’m mildly interested abt it. Need to see more abt it to judge.

    • zferolie

Personally I want more Tales stuff to come to america, so if I see something announced that has no chance, I get upset.

But who knows… maybe they will… That would be a huge surprise though

  • M’iau M’iaut

Keep the random and blind smartphone game hate out of here folks. Note this is posted as a Japan title, where phones are indeed a handheld system.

    • zferolie

Yeah, they really are, and that’s not a bad thing. I just think most people just assume cell phone games are bad… mainly because a lot seem to be. It’s a shame, because a lot of these games they are bringing COULD be good… but sometimes it feels that the company either doesn’t put too much effort in, are limited by the phones tech, or turn it into a cash grab(stares at SE)

    • Tenshigami

Yeah, not quite sure what that’s about here. Console Tales releases aren’t going anywhere, and the response to Tactics Union was quite positive by comparison IIRC.

Of course, we knew what type of gameplay Tactics Union would have from the start, and Tactics fits touchscreens fairly well. Traditional Tales battles maybe not so much, but we know next to nothing about this new game yet, not even a screenshot! We do not yet know what direction they will take with this.

    • Firekitty

While I won’t discount that this might be a good game, the mobile platform simultaneously drastically lowers the chance of a Western release AND makes importation or a fan-translation far more difficult, if not impossible.

But maybe it’ll do okay, and maybe it’ll eventually get a PS mobile port. Maybe Bamco will even shock me stupid with a Western release AND the original audio (and then blame the poor US sales on the female protagonist and lack of a dub, just to really singe my cookies XD).

But my instinctive reaction was still ‘God ******* damnit, Bamco’.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I just seriously doubt that an English language release is even thought of for a release stateside. We got what, ONE of the world games — and that was a generation ago.

  • Ladius

People should consider Tales already has lots of mobile escort games, some are crossovers while others are completely new titles with original casts, like Wahrheit, Commons and Breakers.

Tales of Link doesn’t mean the series will magically turn into a mobile franchise overnight, if anything it could turn out to be a good game on its own since the other Tales games for those platforms were apparently solid for what they were.

    • zferolie

I’ve heard they were pretty decent, but I really know very little about them other then that.

  • $36598391

    mobile phones….
3DS and VITA don’t even have their own 100% new Tales games yet
sure they got ports and remakes of past Tales games but they need brand new additions to the series as well on 3DS and VITA

  • Chaos_Knight

Honestly, the name “Tales of Link” doesn’t really sound a game for consoles.

    • Guest

      Tales of Link
Starts playing Hyrule overworld theme… j/k

  • DemonKingAsura

Will Tales of link, actually feature, well, Link?

  • Barrylocke89

    “Sara also wears bloomers.”

I’m glad the character designers have their priorities straight >_>

  • AxionAzure

Hope they profit from this. Money makes the world go ’round and it also might be convenient for tales fans there, it shows the strength of the franchise.

  • Trevor Nicolaysen

A good game is a good game regardless of what its on. Considering we know almost nothing about it, I say stay skeptical but give it a shot.

I am imagining some issues with controls though.

  • Byas

And here I was, thinking about a Zelda x Tales crossover… Damn Link in the title.

    • Spirit Macardi

      my thoughts exactly x3;

Seriously, that would be awesome! And we wouldn’t have to worry about it being ported to the PS3 shortly afterward XD

    • Ixbran

      same … *sighs*

  • Presea

So one if the titles they chose is Tales of Link huh? Though we most likely not get it, its great to see they have a female protagonist though.

  • Göran Isacson

Other Tales protagonists… so it will be kind of like the other cross-over games, but with actual original characters? One wonders how much time will be dedicated to their story, as well as what part the older Tales characters will play. Just cameos, or will they actually join the party?

    • JustThisOne

Maybe one of them is the Savior! And you get to choose. *___* They considered Tales of Favourite after all.~

  • artemisthemp

    Tales of Link officially dead

  • RichyGaming

    TALES OF FUCKING PENGUINS

  • JustThisOne

Called it. I mean, Tales of Favorite was a pretty big hint-hint.

But don’t worry guys! There’s a probably a mainline announcement on the way. :> Was there really any doubt?

  • DyLaN

I swear you ppl just can’t stop whining the same thing over and over again.

No one will care abt wht I want to say anyway so I will end it with a =_=
