Square Enix Temporarily Stopping Digital Sales Of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

By Spencer . August 28, 2013 . 1:44am

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launched today with server hiccups and long wait times to log in. Square Enix plans on expanding its server capacity, but in the meantime they are stopping sales digital sales of the MMORPG. You can still buy Final Fantasy XIV, but you have to get it in stores. However, I would still wait until these server issues get ironed out before visiting Eorzea.

On a positive note, it sounds like those three years Square Enix spent retooling Final Fantasy XIV may have paid off since people bought the PC/PS3 game at launch.

Final Fantasy XIV is really cursed, really out of luck! :-/

    • Ferrick

so a game having more people than anticipated is cursed ?

      • Bojan Njegomir

Seems like i was misunderstood! I didn’t mean that, i preordered CE copy myself and cant wait to play it! What i ment is that there are problems poping out for FFXIV all the time and whenever i come here i only read bad news which makes me sad!

        • Ferrick

it’s just server problems ~.~, like i said before, there are WAY too many people flooding in, exceeding Yoshi P’s team’s expectations

it was nearly impossible to login during phase 4 because of this flooding, making the world super crowded

  • klkAlexar

Wow, I think sooner or later they might just have to give up.

    • Shady Shariest

Not a problem that would cause anyone to give up… Game being more popular than anticapated rarely is that bad :3

  • Betrayer

Servers are the only really problem atm, after you can get in the game itself is bug free so far for me. They’re adding more servers next week or something, which should help… I hope.

    • mikanko

Personally hoping they’re just taking steps to increase the load the servers they have now can handle.

I think 25 servers for NA/EU is a pretty decent number. There will inevitably be people who stop playing within the next couple of months after rushing through and deciding they’ve completed all that the game has to offer.

It’s an unfortunate trend with new MMOs. The ones that launch with enough servers to handle the player numbers smoothly, often wind up having ghost towns months down the road. Makes a rather poor gaming experience for the people left who still want to enjoy the game.

  • RisukuAozora

Not much of FF fan, but at least give it a chance. It’s only server issues atm.
Could be worse after all. Could be the original XIV.

    • I think that’s what people fear. It’s easy to infer that it’s going to be a repeat of past events.

And if continues over the course of several weeks, then it’ll be even easier. This isn’t really what Squeenix needs right now.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

    First 2010’s debaucle, now this!

  • Brion Valkerion

The real problem is even the people who preordered got screwed over. If you could get in you got to play, and its still the problem now. Sooo many people cannot actually get into the game after buying it, redeeming their game time, and they cannot even log the f in.

Square enix really needs to do some compensation for people because saying “welp just make a new character on a new server” isnt how a mmo works.

    • Enma_Kozato

The real problem lies with the amount of people signing up to play and how the servers cant cope to hold everyone at the same time, which are what all your points are actually relating to. The only people telling you to make a new character on another server are players themselves. Not SE.

  • NintendoPSX

I must be one of the lucky ones then. It’s usually the easiest to sign in, in the morning and late afternoon and when I get in, I don’t get out. Same with everyone else. People afk for 48 or more hours just because they don’t want to log off.

    • and that is exactly why people can’t get in. Lots of people leaving their characters afk so they don’t have to worry about logging back in. They need to implement a afk timer.

      • NintendoPSX

I personally agree with that, because despite my luck it disgusts me people say on for more than 8 hours at a time.

  • Ståle Laastad

i dont get how big companies don`t see the possibility of big server load in games like this.

    • Ethan_Twain

They do. But the server load at launch isn’t indicative of average server load. So it doesn’t make sense, cost wise, to build enough servers for the launch rush and then have way to much capacity sitting around after that.

      • seyEliveD

Aye, this is why you need something similar to overflow servers that can absorb any transient population boom.

  • Christopher Nunes

Sheesh the major problem is the horrible webpage setup with the Service Account when I was applying my CE stuff onto my account and ACCIDENTALLY made a second Service Account with my CE stuff.

Really bloody horrible and I have to wait to get this corrected. 48 hours… I hope I get my Service Account stuff on my primary or else… actually not sure on “else” but still.

So many problems, I’ve never had this kind of problem before with ANY MMOs even though I don’t play a lot of them. What to do?

  • KuroNathan

my entire summary of these past two days of FFXIV has been: Log in, see if I an make a char on my friend’s server yet. Nope never. Log out.

    $24 char making game!

    • It’s going to be more than that once your month is up.

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

Once they get all of these problems out of the way everything will be ok its just they weren’t ready for the huge success rate that they were given.

is this game cursed or something? sheesh…

    • Testsubject909

Damned when it’s not popular. Damned when it is.

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha man, if it’s not the one thing it’s the other… still. One can’t pass any true judgment until the game stabilizes after the seemingly inevitable first-week/month troubles, since it’s like no high profile online game ever can just come out and WORK. If there’s still trouble after that month, well…

Not that I believe there will be. Most of the beta-blogs I’ve been following are saying the game’s the bomb dot com, so SE will probably not lose face another time. Probably…

  • Mnstrzero00

Im using a clear spot voyager ,a Wi-Fi router, and I get about 100 ping in the day and about 80 at night. Would I be able to play this game on my ps3? Please respond. i haven’t been able to get any real answers.
