Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Lets Players Freeze Time During Missions

By Spencer . August 29, 2013 . 5:32pm

Time is always ticking away in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Lightning only has thirteen days to save the world and that includes the Moogle Village. Moogles, led by Mog from Final Fantasy XIII-2, moved into a deep forest and Dryads, trees that sprouted wings on their back, have been preying on them.

Lightning can freeze time during missions using the Chronostasis ability. This consumes EP (Energy Points), which are used to activate healing spells or her Lightspeed skill during battle. Chronostasis will be useful in missions that are timed like this delivery quest where Lightning needs to drop off medicine, but if Lightning rests at an inn or rides a train Chronostasis will be deactivated.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII comes out on February 11 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

All that time and space shit is pretty confusing to me i wonder how it’ll play in the end.

    • Bobby Jennings

    • Arcana Wiz

time paradox then serah will live, light will have a happy ending, noel get back from his time, fang and vannille are alive and snow get’s normal again. In short words they will do a happy ending with this time and space “shit”.

  • IshimaruKaito

is it bad that i kinda forgot about this game?

    • Randy Marsh

Yes it is, considering on how good the game is looking. But how can you forget about a game that is having constant updates almost every week?

      • Arcana Wiz

maybe someone who isn’t much into FFXIII/square, and the release date that is in 2014, like me who forget XV almost every time, only remembers when someone talks bout it.

  • X14

As a game, it looks a lot more promising than XIII or XIII-2.
I’m not so sure about the story though.

  • almostautumn

I never thought there’d be a day when I genuinely didn’t care about FF— but wow did this trilogy bury that love.

    • Tom_Phoenix

On the bright side, at least we now have Bravely Default to carry on the FF torch.

      • Arcana Wiz

Bravely default: where the fairy flies. *BREATH* quite a name that this game has.

        • Tom_Phoenix

          Bravely Default: Final Fantasy =P

    • Lynx

13 got me back into it actually.
      13-2 sucked though.

  • Storm

I actually enjoy every single Final Fantasy game… This game sounds absolutely amazing and might even make my top 5 favorite FFs the way it’s going.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

Even the original version of XIV? :P

I know it looked great and that it had an amazing soundtrack but… that’s it.

      • Storm

Oh, I never played that one. But ARR is great.

  • Luis Ibal

To me is the first FF that i care about.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

    Noel: You will die Lightnin—

    Now time stopped flowing.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

hot damn, I knew I’d find you writing this lol

    • Superior Spider-Man

oooooh I was gonna say something like this. LOL thx for the laugh yours was better than what I had in my head.

  • Arcana Wiz

this game really sounds interesting, kinda sad that we will have to wait until february, but i really want to play it.

  • Damn. February 11th seems so far away lol. I want it now. :3

  • fool

Straight up: I’ll pay $20 (but no more) to play dress-up with Lightning

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Got you there, once it hits the bargain big I will check it out. I already gave FFXIII a second chance with XIII-2 at launch. While better than XIII, it still didn’t feel like a FF at all. I played it for the Poke’mon aspects of it, and Serah is beautiful and I loved playing dress up with her <3

      • fool

I felt like a chump getting XIII-2 at launch, becoming thoroughly unstasified starting about halfway through the game, and then seeing the price plummet within weeks to $40 and <$20 by the end of the year

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Yeah, it didn’t even make it to half the sales of FFXIII, which also sold poorly by comparison. Most FF’s sold around 7-10 million on one system, where as XIII was the first multiplatform FF and sold just barely 6.6 million. XIII-2 broke 3 million. Thusly one of the worst selling FF’s ever sadly. Especially when you consider it’s production cost being much higher than previous FF’s. FFXII was estimated at 40 Million and FFXIII likely double that or even more.

          • Storm

Weaker than previous FFs or not, those sales aren’t bad at all.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

It’s a down vote party, no matter what I say, I get down voted. Bunch of butthurt people in here. Disgusting.

          • CptPokerface

Maybe because you come off as highly arrogant and condescending? Just give it a rest already. You gain nothing from any of this. You aren’t going to change people’s opinions on a game you personally detest, no matter what convoluted reasoning and “facts” you have to back it up.

You hate the stupidity that anonymity brings on the internet but have yet to shown the maturity to move on and accept people’s opinions, and even have the audacity to label them fanboys? Come on.

No series that has lasted as long as Final Fantasy stays 100% the same over the years. It just can’t happen. Now, I CAN agree that the XIII series may have deviated a bit too far from what made previous entries feel like Final Fantasy in some respects, but that’s still mostly a matter of personal preference, and no matter how many sales figures and facts you want to shove down everyone’s throats, you aren’t suddenly going to have a whole bunch of people hating the game as much as you do.

Please, just give it a rest already. You’ve clearly made your point, but enough is enough.

          • Skode

Not many games sell 6.6 million these days not least JRPGs which unlike the days of old to which you nod for the series is a genre which is distinctly niche nowadays.

3 Million i would also say decent for a sequel to a game which had a luke warm reception with many and for all intents and purposes piggy backed so many resources from the engine to character models etc means the lesser sales by no means meant the game was failure in that sense – they are after all satisfied enough to create a third game in the trilogy it would appear.

There is no real issues with the sales here, the real issue for many is their reception to the FFXIII series. If you dislike that series of FF i can respect that but people are getting way off the mark in my opinion in their single minded efforts to deem the FFXIII series a failure. Critically we could argue that is a case for many but that is in itself personal perception and not definitive fact and everyone has opinions at the end of the day.

  • M’iau M’iaut

Everyone leave the ignorance somewhere else please. Thanks.

    • CptPokerface

Wow that was quick. Refreshed the page, inflammatory comment already gone.

      Exactly why I love Siliconera.

      • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

It wasn’t an inflammatory comment, it was a factual based assessment. Proof is in the pudding. FFVII and it’s spin-offs did well, FFXIII did not. I have Plats for both games because they were fun, but they were not FF, SE knows this, FFXIII and FFXIV are one of the reason SE is hurting so badly and had to have layoffs like so many gaming companies. If FFXIV ARR reborn tanks, SE may cease to exist as we know it.

        • CptPokerface

” Bring on the hate fanboys” isn’t inflammatory? Really?

More over, what “facts” did you bring with that comment? All anyone saw was you just baiting people into a heated argument, ONCE AGAIN, about this series of games. It’s not necessary, period.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

It’s because there are so many fanboys on Sili it is annoying. Can’t say anything without a fanboy chiming in. I was just preempting their comments. I think I clarified what was said better in my new comment.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Yes we do have folks who enjoy a whole range of games. And yes, we don’t mind seeing folks sharing that enjoyment regardless of what game is entailed.

And also yes, the clarification is appreciated.

          • CptPokerface

That’s true for any website on the internet. Have you been on IGN at all ever? Still not an excuse to flame people into some ridiculous argument.

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Been on the internets since 2002, back before 4Chan was a cesspool. But I never ceased to be amazed by stupidity of anonymity. But no, never on IGN, never trusted them for information with their buy-offs and taking bribes for reviews.

          • CptPokerface

That’s the internet, hate it or love it. The most that can be done is moderating the filth from everyone else having true discussions. Flame-baiting just adds to the stupidity.

        • FivePointedTheStar

Since when did you get to decide which games are and are not Final Fantasy? lol

          • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Actually what Final Fantasy is, is defined by what it is has always been. A heavy foundation of D&D as FF on NES was originally based off of D&D and exist only because of D&D. Innovation, evolution are important, but when you are so far skewed from what you were, you cease to be what you once were. Clearly this is the wrong place to post facts, since all are clearly fanboys of FFXIII.
Final Fantasy is a franchise name used and abused throughout the history of the series. Where the title has been used in games that had nothing to do with FF at all. 2 such examples are
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, not maden by the FF team, and was released in the US first.
Final Fantasy Adventure, which was actually the original Secret of Mana.
Alas, cold hard facts cannot assuage ones fanboyism.
FFXIII is the only FF to be multiplatform at launch and still sold significantly less than many FF’s. It is one of the totems that has crippled SE. Ignorance is your enemy.
And yet the down votes will continue.

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Thanks for deleting my comment mods for telling the truth.

    • CptPokerface

Quick, serious question: if you care nothing for XIII or it’s sequel, why waste your own time here on an article about it.

Stop looking for attention already, seriously. The FF fanbase looks rabid and toxic enough as it is.

    • M’iau M’iaut

If you can express your opinion of the truth without flamebaiting and deciding that your personal view is everyone’s, please join the discussion. Others have.

  • Junko Enoshima

Pffft, 13 days? Back then, we only had 3 to save the world from getting crushed by a giant moon! WITH A FACE!

    • Vash bane

this sounds like a piece of cake compared to then

  • Steven Higgins

Did not enjoy XIII. Did not enjoy XIII-2
This game is looking better by comparison and I may try it out at some point. Still don’t like the fact that there are no real party members, but the addition of temporary allies softens the blow a little.

  • Umar Ver 1.Happy

I’m one of the few people (probably) that really liked 13. I don’t feel like a sellout for enjoying it. 13-2 , was better received yet felt very paper thin to me and the story felt extremely rushed and under developed. 13 actually had a decent plot and imo , a really good lore in place, which I felt they just totally did not capitalize on….13-3 looks to follow 13-2 in terms of story and plot development , and while the gameplay looks sexy (no not Lightning’s numerous revealing costumes) the story looks all over the place, and this is Nomura’s baby, we all know how he likes to complicate a straight line

    • NewestType

The only thing nomura was responsible for was the original character design…

      • Umar Ver 1.Happy

True, well I guess that was misinformed from my side. sowi

        • NewestType

I’m sure something as minute as the facts wont make a difference to the current and future visitors who up-vote you soley to re-affirm there scapegoat approach to anything Nonura related.

    • Monsley

I’m with you. I loved XIII and it still baffles me that so many people think that XIII-2 is so much better. Yes, the battle system was slightly improved, but everything else felt mediocre at best to me, especially the plot. But oh, well, de gustibus non disputandum est! :)

But I have to admit that while, as you said, the plot looks all over the place, this one has managed to pick my interest somehow and I can’t wait to play it, although I’m ready to be disappointed.

      • Joshua Lewis

You to same with me! except i couldn’t help feeling that XIII-2 was way to short

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I’m surprised Sili didn’t mention that there are also going to be battle guests too, not just Fang

Anyway, I’m pretty sure Serah’s not ‘dead’ anymore. When she died in XIII-2 she passed through to the Invisible World but since that world merged with real world she’ll surely be alive and if the Lightning DLC told me anything it’s that she’ll be within the chaos of the Invisible World. That’s probably why she’s helping Bhunivelze since they share a similar goal, according the FNC Mythos, Bhunivelze hopes to find Mwynn at the centre of the chaos in the Invisible World so that he can destroy her and create a new world Because he believed Mwynn put a curse on the current one so that it would eventually die out (as seen here with the time limit) Just my thoughts though, I could be completely wrong.

    • NewestType

      Oh my…

You actually read the story prior to XIII’s release I take it.
When you have fully gone through the mythos, XIII 2’s events actually follow the intended story better than its predecessor. It really helps to know the story of the gods as it makes understanding the trilogy a lot easier.

      • NewestType

made public preXIII release: Mwyn created Bhunivelze, and Bhunivelze “killed” Mwyn. Bhunivelze then created Pulse, Lindzei and Etro. Bhunivelze feared Etro because she resembled Mwyn. Etro’s blood created humans. Pulse’s task was to find the hidden door to the other world where Mwyn and Chaos are located, so Bhunivelze could finish her off. Mwyn created a world that’s meant to disappear, but Bhunivelze didn’t want that, so that’s why they rebelled.

This is taken from a quote on the NIS board.

While playing XIII 2, most of this mythos is reflected. LR will close the gap in the war between the 5 gods (Etro, Mwyn, Chaos, Lindzei, Bhunivilzie).

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Of course :) and I’ve also read the XIII-2 fragments after book too. It goes into details such as how Snow got his l’Cie brand etc. I won’t go into it too much though xD.

I do believe the story is better than most people lead it on to be and the books definitely help tell the story along with the games. Understanding the Mythos is also key to understanding the underlying plot that goes on too

    • 栗場 江理久

      You…spoiled it for me…darn you…just darn youuu ;n;

      • OathkeeperSoraXIII

How did I spoil you with a theory? :S not to sound rude but we’re onto the 3rd game now so seeing spoilers from the second game shouldn’t really be that much of a surprise

        • 栗場 江理久

True, but to let you know, not everyone has money to spend on every game that comes out, and have the time to play through it either. I know you didn’t mean it intentionally, but not everyone knows what’s going on. Doesn’t matter anymore now

          • OathkeeperSoraXIII

            Ah I understand! Apologies :)

          • 栗場 江理久

Apology….ACCEPTED. I give you cookie in peace offering ^3^

  • cloudcaelum

Hope this time she wearing pants, not tights…

  • Nanaki

I was actually right about Locke being the inspiration for that one moogle and the costume. Intense!

  • Skeptika Crediblus

I really should remember to finish XIII-2 some day. All the shiny new games keep getting in the way….

  • XiaomuArisu

No one? Really? Ok,I will say it

    • J_Joestar

  • Isaac Newton

Some games can freeze time too by pressing the start button LOL
Anyway I look forward to this game.
