Tales Of Symphonia’s Magic Prodigy, Genis, Isn’t Always An Obnoxious Brat

By Spencer . August 29, 2013 . 11:18pm

Despite what Zelos occasionally says after a Tales of Symphonia battle, Genis is a cool dude and not just because he learns Meteor Storm. Genis stands up for Lloyd when the village is about to throw him out because Lloyd possesses an Exsphere. The mayor’s reasoning is Lloyd is an outsider and raised by a dwarf plus he’s totally fine if the people in the ranch die as long as his village is unharmed. Yeah, he’s a jerk, but Genis is a good friend.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles comes out on October 10 for PlayStation 3 and is slated for release next year in the West.

    • brian

Does all time include the future?

    • 하세요

Yuri Lowell has that spot for me.

    • Masengan

      Same here!!!

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Genus was one of my least favorite characters, and yet I ended up with him as Lloyd’s life-partner at the end of the game.

Also I love how his Japanese name was Genius Sage.

  • AkuLord3

Wait is it saying Genis is a Jerk? or the mayor guy is…i’m sure how i’m reading this especially since Genis isn’t a jerk character

  • Freud_Hater

Uhhh… Genis is not an obnoxious brat at all Oo Did we play the same game, here? If anything, Zelos is MUCH more obnoxious. And why do we need an article about this? Oo

    • Arcana Wiz

      new trailer?

      • Freud_Hater

Why have such a title, then? Why not just ‘New Symphonia trailer shows more of the characters!’ or something? ‘_’

        • Barrylocke89

Because some players (like myself) would point out that he CAN be a little obnoxious brat sometimes. :P

He’s a good kid overall though, as shown by his loyalty to Lloyd and

          *Significant, but not MAJOR spoilers*

The fact that he’s trying to change one of his BIGGEST flaws, which is his own prejudice against humans

          • Symbol de Au

I expected you to say “his height” for a second there.

          • AuraGuyChris

That in no way relates to being obnoxious. He’s trying to fit in and just voices out how humans are very racist.
He’s not as bad as the villains…

          • Barrylocke89

His brattiness is a separate issue, and more or a “know it all kid” attitude, which is why I separated that from what I saw as his bigger character flaw.

As for the racism thing, It’s been a long time since I played, so I’ll admit that I could be wrong about certain skits or ingame conversations, but here’s how I had interpreted it.

I believe that Genis doesn’t like a lot of humans, in kind of a reverse-racism sort of way, not just in a “I only dislike the ones who hate my race first” way.He likes or grows to like the party members for the most part and a lot of his old Aselian friends, but can be quick to judge humans in general, because he know’s what humans are capable of against his own kind. He certainly isn’t as bad as the Desians or later villian’s in the game (they ACT on those feeling to do horrible things to humans, causing that nasty cycle), but I imagine that if Genis had been thrown into a personal situation with nothing but humans, (like that one school in Palmacosta he kind of would have liked to join), that he would probably be afraid or distrustful of the humans just as they would feel the same way to him, instead of BECAUSE of how they felt to him, if that makes any sense. And of the party, Genis is certainly the one who sympathizes the most with the main villain, goals, which says something in itself.

In addition, his knowing of “cool” humans like Lloyd and Colette who judge more from a person’s character instead of their race is one of the things that challenges his own thoughts on the subject and makes him strive to be less judgmental about it. That’s how I perceived his view on the subject at least.

    • CirnoLakes

Agreed. Genis is one of the most likable characters in the game.

Sure, he can be a little harsh on Lloyd’s attitude towards studying. But he is by no means “obnoxious” and by no means a “brat”, ever.

If anything, he just has that kind of relationship with Lloyd that he takes occasional quips at him.

Genis wasn’t obnoxious! He was adorable, and happens to be my favorite character from the game. Colette was the cringe-worthy character, in my opinion…

  • Ty Arnold

The title of this article is nothing but lies. LIES!

  • Edward Reiher

Never cared much for mage type characters.

  • Edward Reiher

I’ve never cared much for mage characters to be honest. I have always based my likes of video game characters almost soley on the characters physical designs not so much a fan of uber femanine male characters that Square does for the most part either.

  • WhyWai

Tales series need to show western Vita owners some love…

  • Ziggy Wish

Wasn’t a fan of Genius until i watched the OVA

  • Spirit Macardi

In addition to pointing out that Genis was not an obnoxious character (if anything he was the voice of reason in the group), the town didn’t throw Lloyd out because he has an Exsphere. It was because he became the target of the Desians after getting too close to their nearby camp.

    • golden izanagi

if anyone is obnoxious its that mayor that kicked Lloyd out hell even in the sequel he’s still an asshole even after being called out for it, of course there are plenty of other douchebags in symphonia lets see teth’ealla’s pope for the way he treats his daughter such as locking her up in a basement of a research facility so nobody would know he has a half elf daughter and then using her as a decoy for a negotiation, kvar well I’ll avoid spoilers but lets just say there is a reason that kratos hopes he burns in hell.

  • CirnoLakes

Of course, Genis is always adorable.
