Hideki Kamiya Would Like To Make A Bayonetta Spin-Off For 3DS Starring Jeanne

By Robert Ward . September 1, 2013 . 9:30am

PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya just wrapped up development of The Wonderful 101, which he worked on as director. To date, most of Kamiya’s games have been for consoles. 101 aside, he’s worked on Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Okami, Viewtiful Joe and Bayonetta.

At the Penny Arcade Expo, Siliconera asked Kamiya if he would be interested in developing a Nintendo 3DS game, given Platinum’s ongoing relationship with Nintendo. Kamiya had not one, but two ideas he said he’s like to work on, given the opportunity.

“Given the chance, I’d like to make a game based on Jeanne from Bayonetta,” Kamiya replied. “Something that’s not as big in scale. Something that’s portable, that you could play in quick sessions, where she’s a history teacher and the kind of fun things that could come out of a scenario like that.”

He added, “If I could get away with it, I’d also like to come up with a spin-off of Okami, less focused on the grand idea of saving the world, but [rather] something focused on the smaller world of the fairy Issun.”

A Bayonetta side-story for 3DS sounds fun, especially with the kind of whacky scenario Kamiya described. If not Bayonetta, hopefully he will be given the chance to work on a Nintendo 3DS game someday.

    Do it!

  • raitouniverse

That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard, good on you Kamiya’

  • Anime10121

A Bayonetta spin off starring Jeanne for 3DS? I’d buy it.

    • KnifeAndFork

      who??

      • Anime10121

        lol thx corrected :P

  • LightZero

Definitelly do it. I would buy it definitely. The more 3DS games for my beloved system the better.

  • British_Otaku

Yes please. Some people are concerned that Platinum keep making new IP which are nearly all risky niche titles with different angles, why not something based on an established IP with a smaller budget.

The Jeanne project or the Issun project. I would love either one.

  • Jon McGuire

Kamiya is really determined to make Platinum go 2nd party for Nintendo.

    • MrJechgo

Considering how they got treated by Sega, I’d say that it’s for the better…

  • Wake

Kamiya has always been about bringing something new to the table, and maybe if Bayonetta 2 sells well this might be a reality.

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Kamiya needs to do a collaboration with Cliffy B. They are each other’s Eastern and Western counterparts.

    • DCBlackbird

Are people down voting because he’s a western developer?…. gee whiz

      • British_Otaku

Cliffy B sorta has an iffy reputation even among gamers who like a lot of western games, there are some things he says… >_> That said, I didn’t downvote this guy and we can’t say for sure why the others did without them speaking up.

        • DCBlackbird

I shouldn’t jump to conclusions. It’s just a instinct of a select demographic that loves to say Unreal Tournament is the apex all western games will ever be. A select few mind you.

        • KnifeAndFork

Cliffy B was the one that said the reason we have so many generic bald space marine types in games this gen was that “HD hair is hard”. Well obviously it is not hard for everyone Cliff..
That and he made a few off color remarks about the PS3 or PS4 controller or whatever

    • KnifeAndFork

      Let the downvotes rain in….

  • Crazy_O

With the sale numbers of W101 (5k in its first week) I would advise them to at least wait to see if Bayonetta will do better. I don’t think many people owning a WiiU appreciate Platinum games,.. of course not on this forum! (downvote shield activated) But all around it doesn’t look good.

Edit: Some seem to not accept the fact that some games just sell worse on certain plattforms than others. But yea, shoot the messenger that helps. If bayonetta doesnt at least sell 20k in its first week, N and P*’s partnership is over whether we want to accpet that or not.

    • British_Otaku

It seems pretty safe to say either of the suggestions above would do better than Japan’s 5K in one day during a holiday as they are established IP set to be on a platform which prints money. >_>

Okamiden got over 84,000 on it’s first week. Bayonetta doesn’t have a portable sequel/spinoff for reference but 5K is easy. :P

I would say not many people owning any platform appreciate Platinum Games, if only on the basis of the president considering their sales except Metal Gear Rising to be C or D worthy.

      http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-17-platinum-games-president-rates-its-sales-as-a-c-or-even-a-d

      • Crazy_O

I am considering a WiiU only because of Platinum, I love them and their games, I know W101 is one game but as a fan of the developer I’m kinda disappointed. I’m agreeing with you in general, but I hope you understand my disappointed in the game’s sales.

    • anarchy_panty

For whatever it’s worth, I’m buying a Wii U specifically for W101 and Bayonetta 2 (and DKC Tropical Freeze, but that’s unrelated to this article I guess).

    • Lynx

      Platinum Curse.

A lot of their games are great and just don’t sell well for some reason, with the exceptions being Bayonetta and MGR (The latter because of brand name.)

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

On the contrary, MGR deserves even more credit for doing well than Bayonetta on account that most die hard fans were screaming “Bloody murder” at the fact it was a spin off not made by Konami. I was (pleasantly) impressed when I saw the game getting such a good reception, most people were on a crusade against it much like they were against the new DMC, if not worse. Resistance to change and all that~.

One thing’s for sure, MGR managed to stand on its own against the stigmata of the franchise it sported~.

        • KnifeAndFork

Because Platinum > Ninja Theory and everyone knew that

    • MasterScrub

Personally I love Platinum Games and have enjoyed every title of theirs that I’ve gotten, but W101 just… doesn’t look that good to me, I guess? I think it’s less ‘People with Wii Us don’t like Platinum’ but more ‘W101 doesn’t look that interesting to some people’

That being said I’m sure it’s a good game.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Have you SEEEN the Multi Unite Morphs Brah?!

(Lmao Titanfall reference, dont kill me)

    • Suicunesol

Not many people own a Wii U period LOL.

And, by the way, 5k was only one day’s worth of sales. It’s still not likely to rise much, though.

I think we should wait to see how Nintendo advertises Bayonetta. I don’t know if many people pay attention to the studio developing the game, so it’s not fair to say that if W101 didn’t sell, Bayo won’t sell either. They’re two completely different series.

      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

little marketing in japan with only 30k shipped. Think

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Nintendo’s always been about diversity and bringing something unique to the table from their old days with the SNES and N64(even though, that is why they innovated like their livelihoods depended on it

  • puchinri

    I would really love that. ;u;
Please assist him with that, Nintendo~.

  • Kalis Konig

Man I always wish for his games to do well. He has such a boner for Nintendo so I hope hey continue on good terms even if his games don’t turn huge profits.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

He has a boner for Tetris Attack.

The link has been established. Once you go Black you Never go Back.
      Always bet on it.

  • SirRichard

With Kamiya having recently said he wouldn’t mind going 2nd party for Nintendo, I’d be interested in seeing what he’d do with the 3DS. Some lower key stuff sounds pretty good.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

ALL MY YESES!! and heres a tip, wind waker Style would work….

    • http://simplephilistine.wordpress.com/ Arla

No, that looks awful. The last thing we need is more games using Windwakers artstyle. It’s been done to death.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

….I can only name 3 games that had that style

        • KnifeAndFork

          Whatever it’s ugly. Next.

  • almostautumn

Wow: I’d love the Issun game idea. Instantly makes me think of something akin to Minish Cap, which is just my favorite Zelda game and probably favorite GBA game also!

  • Solomon_Kano

A game about Issun? That’d be pretty slick. But, even though Kamiya said that, I can’t imagine he’d be in any rush to work with Capcom again. And I doubt Capcom would be too willing to let Platinum touch the IP, since they’ve already packed it into the attic.

That said, Bayo spin-off for Jeanne? Would be sweet. The chances of it happening will likely rest on Bayo 2 though, so I certainly hope it succeeds.

  • NintendoPSX

Oh man, if Kamiya really is trying to lean towards a Nintendo second party, Bayonetta in Smash Bros anyone?!
    No? Too much?
    Okay…

    • British_Otaku

I can see one of Platinum’s IP getting into Smash Bros as a playable character from how Kamiya and Sakurai seem to be on great terms (similar to Kojima in the past).
Bayonetta could be playable along with Wonder Red as he is part of a Nintendo IP… I would be curious about how they make TW101 work, though all of them appearing in a Final Smash or being in the background of a stage would be cool.

      • NintendoPSX

Oh how I wish but I have a strong inkling Bayonetta is a little too sexual for Smash Bros’ taste.

        • British_Otaku

It’s a crossover mate, they can and will already compromise what doesn’t work and make up new ideas as they did for previous games.

What elements of Bayonetta are you certain would have to be toned down for Smash Bros? I can probably think up a way to keep them in or a character who has similar elements but still was a great addition without them.

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

          Uh Zero Suit Samus ???

          • NintendoPSX

Yeah but Samus doesn’t shout profanities, straddle her enemies, or stick her middle finger into her Space Ship to start it.

          • British_Otaku

So she won’t shout out profanties, instead more nods to Devil May Cry like “Flock off featherface” and language which still implies her sexuality like “No one said you could touch!”.

One Piece features characters who flick the middle finger, they similarly don’t do so in most adaptations like the anime or video games but maintain 99.999% of their essence, though Law does have pixels arranged as a middle finger in Gigant Battle 2.

I’ve seen characters straddle others in games rated CERO A or games aimed to kids and all like Clash of Ninja’s Anko or Tenkaichi 3′s Seripa/Fasha during attacks… >_>

It isn’t nearly as hard as you think it is. I wonder how many times Dante said “Fuck you” in PlayStation All Stars… >_> And I’m pretty sure it is much less than the source game AND he is still recognisable as that Dante.

          • KnifeAndFork

            That’s not Dante. That’s Donte.

          • British_Otaku

Close enough, as fun as it was using all of the fun nicknames like “Fuck you”, “Donte” and “Dino” (Dante In Name Only, while his bro is “Vino”).

I’m trying to get out of the habit of being antagonistic to people and when the game has released done worse than DMC4. At this point, we need to get those DmC people to try out DMC1, 3, 4 (why not Ninja Gaiden Black, NG2, Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101 as well) and to convince Capcom we have interest in the original series and not so much in the reboot thing.

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

uh all that stuff can be taking out. All it take is creating Bayonetta as if her games were Rated T,

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    >For 3DS
    Kamiya, pls

  • xxx128

A game staring Jeanne would be too awesome no matter what hardware its on. DO IT.

    • MrJechgo

Actually, any game that would turn Bayonetta from a single game to a series of game would be awesome.

  • MrJechgo

Why not, but… how about a Bayonetta game with co-op with Bayonetta AND Jeanne. I suppose they could do Jeanna’s side of the story first and then make a 3rd Bayonetta game (I wish) with both as playable characters. Seriously, if each lady has their unique set of weapons and moves, which Jeanne could use as she’s a “clone” of Bayonetta in terms of moveset, just imagine the tag-team and double team attacks they could pull off together.
    - Bayonetta does a combo with her guns and during a kick, you press a button for Jeanne to appear and use the kick’s momentum to have Jeanne launched at the enemy for a close-range attack.
    - Jeanne does a combo with her sword and after a launcher, she tags Bayonetta to execute a drop kick with her enlarged boot.
    - Bayonetta creates a guillotine to lock an angel’s head, but instead of you mashing a button to build-up power, you tag in Jeanne for her to appear and kick the guillotine’s blade instantly to chop the angel’s head.
    - Jeanne creates a vicegrip-like device to crush an angel, but instead of you mashing a button to build-up power, you tag in Bayonetta for her to appear on one side of the device while Jeanne goes to the other side and then they both kick the vicegrip to squash the angel.
    - Bayonetta summons a demon while Jeanne does the same. But then, their… huh… tendrils (?)… huh… hair (?)… clothes (?)… (whatever it’s called), the sinuous lines of dark energy coming from each woman intertwine and splice together to form a demonic two-headed dragon to finish off a boss.
Add the feature that you could tag team each lady with the press of a button, including during combos, and another feature for offline and online co-op, and you just sealed a great deal. I keep talking about Bayonetta and Jeanne, but I’m pretty sure that if the series adds more characters, they could serve as playable characters as well.

    • PreyMantis

      It’s called Bayonetta 2 .

    • Solomon_Kano
      • MrJechgo

Guess I missed that news… Then again, good luck keeping up with the newsflood during that event XD.
        “Hey, let’s check out Siliconera.”
        “Oh my… 4, 5, 6 new pages about E3 O_o”
That’s good to know that the sequel will have 2-player co-op… but I do which that more light would have been shed on the subject. Anyway, no worries or hurries.

        • Solomon_Kano

Yea, there was a lot of stuff easily missed lol.

    For 3DS? Count me in!
3DS is a strong platform for any game :D

Please make it happen Platinum Games!

  • Strain42

I personally think the Okami spinoff sounds more interesting than the Bayonetta spinoff, but okay.

  • Hinataharem

    Luka needs a game too

  • TheBlackRabbit

eh don’t like the new look.

  • Göran Isacson

    Jeanne as a history teacher?

See, on paper it’s both a cool idea, and a kind of icky idea. Now correct me if I’m mistaken here, BUT
*SPOILERS FOR BAYONETTA FOUND HERE TO THE END OF THE MESSAGE*
Didn’t Jeanne stay awake all those years that Bayonetta was in… time stasis or whatever? She would thus probably have some pretty interesting insights into the worlds history. The game could be about her battles throughout the years she stayed awake, and give us an excuse to see various famous historical personalities, as either Umbran Witches or Lumen Sages… and kill them.

Because if I also recall correctly, wasn’t she Balders mindslave during the years she was awake? And Balder seems to have wacked anyone that stood against him. Playing an entire game where you basically fight on the villains side as a manipulated puppet MIGHT not be a very… fresh idea, so to speak. It may be very unfresh. Also one wonders what purpose it would serve. Building backstory for Jeanne, or expanding the world? But would there be a purpose to this expanded backstory, a pay off later on, or would the whole game essentially be an excuse to just string together a bunch of boss fights with people Jeanne killed at Balders behest?

  • Ixbran

Well, interesting to note, in the Bayonetta Art Book there is artwork depicting Jeanne as a school teacher. Given the fact that Jeanne has been awake during the many hundred years that Bayonetta was sleeping, chances are each time she’d talk about a certain part of history, we’d probably get a flash back sequence showing what she did in that time frame shes talking about.

Having a spin off title telling us what Jeanne had been doing during the time Bayonetta was sleeping would be very interesting. I’d love to see their take on how certain historical events took place, with the inclusion of Angels and Demons being added in the mix. What parts of history would she experience, who would she meet, who would she end up battling? I really wanna know.

(here is said art work from the Bayo Art Book showing her as a teacher)

    • NintendoPSX

It’s like Jeanne stepping into an Animus. Except, you know, she’s actually there.

  • Time Sage

Isn’t there already Okamiden for DS?

    • British_Otaku

Yes there is. However, Hideki Kamiya had nothing to do with it and in my opinion, it was a bad sequel even taking into account that it had to be scaled down for the DS and did fairly well with what it had.

Also, Kamiya is calling for a spinoff with a completely different angle focused on Issun and his adventures.

  • kylehyde

Do it Kamiya, just do it.

  • Otoya

Go for it!!! Confirm day 1 purchase!

  • http://LevelUpGeneration.blogspot.com/ KALiverin

Wasn’t the second party thing confirmed to be a mistranslation? I’ve checked Hideki Kamiya’s twitter before and whenever someone suggests that Platinum should become a Nintendo studio, he never seemed too fond of the idea. I also read the IGN article and he never specifically stated he wants Platinum to become a second-party studio. He just enjoys working with Nintendo and hopes to do so again in the future.

I doubt Platinum has any intention of becoming a second-party studio to Nintendo. It just seems odd that Nintendo fans want Nintendo to buy every studio out there just because they work with those companies sometimes.

That being said, I’d love a portable Bayonetta. I think it’s the kind of game that could transition well to a handheld, even if it’s not the exact same type of game as the console versions.

    *EDIT*

I looked at JP Kellams’ twitter and apparently it was indeed a mistranslation. I thought that sounded odd that Kamiya would suddenly change his mind like that.

  • bakasora

I can imagine the very pixelated Jeanne

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Both ideas are interesting given Kamiya’s pedigree in the industry. what I do hope he considers though is Bayonetta 3…I’ll seriously cry if Bayonetta 2 is the last we see of…well. Bayonetta. Bayonetta was, in my opinion, one of the greatest games ever, and hope the sequel holds that title too, but don’t want Bayonetta’s story to end there. She’s such a great character and so unique unlike most characters that have come before her. anybody who has played Bayonetta knows exactly what I’m taking about. I don’t know if I can live with myself if Bayonetta 2 is her last ‘dance’(pun intended). I’m not joking.

  • xsaydex

I think the only thing I’d like more than the prospect of Jeanne being a teacher, is the prospect of Jeanne interacting and responding to smartass adolescent students with witty smartass retorts. That’s got the potential to be wildly amusing. Make it happen Kamiya. This is easily the most original concept for a plot to action game that I’ve seen in quite some time.

  • unknowncast

An extreme-action game starring Issun? I’m down with that.

  • JNT

    Super Cutie J confirmed!

  • James Enk

i hope Bayonetta 2 sales well enough so we can see the series continue the game will be awesome that’s pretty much guaranty so it’s up to Nintendo/Platinum to promote the game

    • British_Otaku

Kamiya all but confirmed that he isn’t interested in making a third one.

“I don’t really have a problem with making sequels. Above all, I want
to make games that are fun. This is the most important thing for me. So next to new IP’s, I also like to make sequels. The point you’re making however, is very good. With the first title of a new franchise, there are so many good ideas, so many things you want to do. Unfortunately, you can’t use all of them in the game. In the sequel, you can use cancelled ideas from the first game. I do have the feeling most of those ideas are used when you reach the third game though and that developers only make a third game because the fans want it. That’s why I don’t really see a Bayonetta 3 happening in the future. I am fortunate that I am able to create many games from scratch.”

      Source: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/08/kamiya_doesnt_think_bayonetta_3_will_ever_happen_but_is_open_to_okami_sequel

He seems to be open to spinoffs following the characters or cameos based on his work at Clover (Dante in Viewtiful Joe) and now at Platinum (The Wonderful 101 has an expy for Viewtiful Joe, Luka and others).

    I would certainly buy that.
