Report: Sony Working On Virtual Reality Headset For PlayStation 4

By Ishaan . September 3, 2013 . 11:20am

Sony are working on a virtual-reality headset for their PlayStation 4 console, which may be revealed at Tokyo Game Show or in 2014, according to reports from CVG and Eurogamer respectively.

Both reports state that Evolution Studios are currently working on implementing the device to be compatible with their upcoming DriveClub game for PS4. The headset will reportedly be used to create a virtual cockpit view of the game’s vehicles.

While Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida declined to comment when asked by Eurogamer about the VR headset at Gamescom, he did mention to CVG back in August that Sony are researching “a lot of things” they can’t talk about at present.

    yea SAO time

  • Nyekun

    Inb4 all the SAO fa-

    Nvm, they’re already here.

    • LM009

not rly SAO fan but I do like the idea of it. nobody remembers .hack so meh

    • AuraGuyChris

Sorry. SAO has taught me that the creators will try to kill you for leaving a place where they’re gods.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

.Hack did it first *hipster glasses*

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Lmao SAO is meh, but even I know SAO was written before .hack.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          When was it written

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            In the 90s.
            .hack came out early 2000s

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

? SAO was written in 2009

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Nah, its been published online since 2002.

SAO was republished because the guy wrote Accel World.

      • Wappuli

Nope, SAO is older than .Hack, so you just take those glasses off.

        • Wondering_Zero

Uh…The original run for SAO started in 2009 while .hack started back in 2002 (both the game and the anime) either you genuinely mixed up both dates or you’re just being a fanboy…

Edit: Should have done more of my research. SAO started in 2002 as a webnovel, which I think is Japan’s basic equivalent to fanfiction/whatever it’s called when it’s an original story. It was officially printed as a book in 2009, seven years later.

Even then which one started earlier would probably have to go to .hack because of the way video game production works. Mind you planning the game out and fully fleshing out the world (no pun intended) takes a lot of time so it’s possible the basic promise of .hack// was written way before SAO was.

          • Wappuli

The publication started in 2009 yes, but it was originally web novel and it was either early 2002 or late 2001. A little before first .Hack atleast, please get your facts straight before calling someone a fanboy.
I don’t actually care much about SAO, and I’m huge .Hack fan.

          • Wondering_Zero

I just corrected my statement a little earlier, and looked it up. It’s debatable if SAO was actually written first, yes, maybe it was released first but you don’t take into account the time it takes to make a game. Doing some more research it says the game started development in early 2000, so unless SAO was being written before then .hack wins out in terms of who was created first.

          • Wappuli

Planning for first .Hack might have started in 2000 sure, and the idea for it might have sprouded even earlier, but the same goes for SAO, and it’s pretty much impossible to know which idea was first.
I’m just saying that readers/gamers had access to SAO first, and I think that’s what counts when desiding which was first.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

          April 10, 2009 SAO
June 20, 2002 Dot hack…. what are you talking about?

          • Wappuli

            Check my response to Wondering_Zero.

    • Mirai

SAO was the most disappointing series of last year, it had so much potential. :(

  • MasterScrub

Forget SAO, I want Namco/CC2 to remake .hack!

    • Byron Kerrison II

    • Sardorim

I want to meet Kite and Blackrose!

    • Sentsuizan_93

HD Collection of .hack series = ALL OF MY MONEY!!!

      • Christopher Nunes

I agree… I would LOVE to replay all the past .hack games in glorious HD even though I have them for the PS2 at the moment. I would re-buy them again.

    • Erikdayo

I am baffled at SAO’s popularity considering how poorly written the anime was. Maybe the light novels are amazing, but I have my doubts. Less baffled at AoT’s popularity this year but did not end up a fan of that one either. Seemed pretty cool at first. *shrug*

      • Christopher Nunes

I believe I heard that the first half of the story was good, but the second half was horrible in the light novels. Especially when you read the thoughts on the female cast… it was just plain awful I hear.

Honestly it looked like it had a good presentation but I don’t like the idea of an MMO killing people in real life because of this nut case (I can’t fully remember why he did it) who created this game.

I prefer .hack more for a mock-MMO series.

      • I dunno, I’m not trying to bash here, but it just seems like you’re bashing these anime because they’re popular.

I know it’s all your opinion, but yeah, I’m getting that hipster-ish vibe. Might be wrong.

        • Erikdayo

Uh, no. SAO is a generally bad series, in my opinion. I put up with about 16 episodes of it. Not bashing it just to bash. Not bashing a series that I haven’t watched. Just genuinely thought it poorly done. Some currently popular series I like include Monogatari and PMMM.

In the case of AoT, I mentioned it because that seems this years SAO except even more popular. This one I am more just not a fan of the main 3 characters and the pacing. Animation is great during action sequences, but there are clearly budget issues which is likely why there are so many stills with lots of dialog over them. Regardless of its’ flaws, I consider it a much much much better series than SAO. ;)

          • I agree with you on SAO– though I really liked the first half of SAO, I didn’t really care for the second half.

And I respect your opinion on both shows, but I just don’t see the budget issue complaints… the Attack on Titan anime series is pretty much THE manga portrayed on-screen, which makes it a great adaptation. There were times where the show left me in complete suspense, wondering what’ll happen next, thinking “Wow, this is really good”, and I would never even notice something like “stills with heavy dialogue”– I don’t even understand why some people look for things like that unless they we’re already disinterested with the show. But I digress, I’m not trying to start an argument here.

I guess you’re more of an indie anime fan, if I’m using the right words? A lot of the anime you mentioned I have never heard of.

Anyway, I do apologize for the “hipster bashing remark”.

          • Erikdayo

The stills are distracting. It’s not to say that everything I watch has a great budget, but mediocre animation all the way through, to me, is a lot less jarring than fantastic animation during fights, lots of recap, and lots of stills all in the same episode. But I suppose they’re just trying to work with the budget they’ve got for the series.

Indie? Not sure about that one. But I do admit that shonen action is generally not near the top of my ‘to watch/read list’. Some of the main reasons I gave AoT a chance was because friends were (and still are) hyped up about it, I like fantasy series, I like OOT violence sometimes, and the challenge of battling titans/giants/whatever seemed pretty cool.

But it just seems to have ended up not being for me. Maybe I’ll go back to it eventually and end up loving it like I thought I would after the first few episodes.

I’ll probably stick to Berserk for my fantasy fix. Hope they animate more of it. They did originally announce that they’d be doing more than the Golden Age arc w/ the new film series, I think? Will definitely admit that I’ve never read any of it. Would love to see more Moribito as well, but I know that anime didn’t sell well at all.

Monogatari series (the Bakemonogatari portion specifically) and Puella Magi Madoka Magica (perhaps I shouldn’t have used an acryonym) are actually the two best selling TV animes of the past 10+ years if you go by per volume DVD/BD sales. I could list more favorites but decided to just post the most currently popular two I could think of.

          • Guest

            so… because YOU don’t like it, it’s bad…
well… I liked it so in my eyes Sword Art Online is a good series!

          • Erikdayo

Sounds good. We all have opinions and are entitled to them.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

Mainly because most people don’t feel the need to analyze the writing of every little thing before they’re satisfied, and simply enjoy things for what they are. *Shrug*

        • Erikdayo

Well, I’m not sure it is that. Maybe I am too critical of SAO. Maybe not. But I certainly enjoy my fair share of ‘dumb’ and just plain bad series. :D

Like Seikon no Qwaser. I can’t even explain, but I love that series for all its’ awful/awesomeness.

In the end, it is nice to have so many choices to watch because everyone has got different tastes.

          • PreyMantis

Everyone knows why you like Seikon no Qwaser– the milk.

      • Raltrios

I don’t know why. It’s really no different from Naruto and some of the other big names in writing, though it has a more relatable MC. Granted, I don’t like Naruto and do like SAO, but I only bring it up because they’re similar.
Regardless, yes, the light novels are better. There was quite a bit cut from the anime which I found very disappointing, but the anime didn’t even get to the best arc of GGO. I’m hoping there’s an OVA series for that.

      • French

I couldnt pass 12 episodes of AoT, I havent bothered with SaO

        • Erikdayo

I made it through 13. AoT is not bad, but it didn’t end up holding my interest. Too bad because I really liked it at first.

          • PreyMantis

            The later episodes get better.

          • Kevadu

You quit just before AoT started getting really good…

          • Erikdayo

Always the chance I’ll get back to it someday. But until then I’ve got plenty of other stuff to watch. :)

      • Kevadu

The light novels for SAO are just as poorly written. The anime is actually a pretty faithful adaption…of bad material.

      • Kai2591

I can’t say if the SAO anime was poorly written or not (cuz really, I don’t know how to judge ‘good’ writing), but I thought it was just okay, not bad, but not awesomely impressive like how a lot of people are making it out to be.

I had thought that if someone makes a very good SAO VR game, it will sell like crazy given it’s huge popularity, but now someone reminded me of .hack, which made me think, hey, that’s an even better idea! :)

    • Finally someone I can relate to! I’d pay pretty dang good money for an HD remake or even to get something like //fragment in the works!

    • 07thCrow

You beat me too it! I was thinking the exact same thing! XD

    • Kai2591

hmm that’s actually a good idea, and a better choice! :)

    • Kitestwinblades

Music to my Ears! XD This^ and This ENTIRE article!

The only game I want to see is The World MMO from Namco . get ready to go into comas.

  • Magnumsally

not interested to something strapped to my face

  • Isaac Newton

Fatal Frame or Siren with VR support sure will give many players a heart attack. XD

    • KuroNathan

Hmm, I didn’t like the latest siren game. and Fatal frame hasn’t made it over to the US since 2005 (the 3ds one doesn’t count >.>)

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Fatal Frame IP is under Nintendo

  • RichyGaming

    • アティ

      *Can’t find log out button*
Should have read the manual T_T

      • RichyGaming

Hell no, if it was like the anime, I wouldn’t play xD

  • DenjinJ

Yoshida tried the Rift and liked it… just support the Rift! I’d love to try this, but I’m not going to buy a Sony PS4 VR headset any more than I would buy a Microsoft XBox 360 driving wheel, while other alternatives exist for PC, PS2, and PS3 inclusively.

  • Namuro

And thus it begins… Humanity’s descent into virtual death!

Seriously though, I’m really looking forward to this.

  • Wappuli

Kinda interested in this, sadly I don’t really play any games where this can be used well.

  • mojack411

I remember seeing the first murmurs of this some time last year. Should be interesting to see where this goes.

  • Kaihedgie

Don’t really need VR to enjoy anything or enhance experience.

  • Lol

    • Solomon_Kano

      God, I love fake Kaz.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      he forgot hentai

    • Göran Isacson

That is both hilarious and sad.

  • Chaos_Knight

With normal controllers? Pfft. When are we going to have Virtual Reality games WITH OUR BODIES as the controller? Like SAO or .hack.

    • Kaihedgie

    • Tatsuya1221

In .hack //GU they had a type of 1 handed joystick, if you watched the news reports in the mine OS dashboard, in the anime that came with .hack//infection, they were using controllers that looked like a snes and ps2 controller mix.

    • Testsubject909

That’s not ideal, you want to remove as much lag between your thoughts and your in-game action. If you want completely immersive game as in with .hack or SAO, what you seek is to have an out of body like experience, this does not mean to be disconnected from your body, but rather to feel like you are in complete control of a second body.

This would be an interesting first step, putting you as close to the first person view of another character is a good idea.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Now we dont need to rely on camera angles to look up skirts!

    • Testsubject909

      I laughed, so thumbs up.

  • Pdugna

Cool i dont mind the competition the Occlus guys are cool but…more tech only thing bad is just Sony doing soo much at once…but least if VR kicks off with them and Rift together they have a foothold in new territory.
question though, did the person who put this up get sick of looking at the ps4 lol….

    • Testsubject909

Sony has always done a lot of things at once, they’ve got quite a lot of unused patents such as sound based motion detection systems that could be utilized for games. I forget where I saw the patent and schematics but it was interesting to learn that Sony just keeps on pumping new ideas and just shelving a lot of them.

      • Pdugna

Eye Toy on ps2 was definitely more useful and accurate then the orginal kinect detecting your presence and movements that is.

  • J_Joestar

is it wrong the first thing that popped into my head was the image of someone playing with a VirtualBoy headset.

  • Abysswalker90

Wait. What console is that on the picture?

    • Testsubject909

      It’s a PS3.

      Just a very stylized PS3.

The overall design looks like an altered PS3 Slim.

      • Abysswalker90

So, it’s just for show huh?

  • Courtney Levi Osborn

    this picture….?

  • Could use an MMORPG with this so that I can finally swing a sword and not get arrested.

    • Testsubject909

Or join a LARP. There are events where people do swing actual real live swords at each other too, but they also have real armor.

And real injuries… Feel free to look it up and google it.

If you join though, you do have to sign a waiver.

      • Testsubject909

Whoops… I should’ve stated. “There are Also events where people do swing actual real live swords at each other too”.

        My bad on that.

  • Demeanor

I must have missed something… what in the world is SAO??? What is AoT??? Why is everyone talking so casually about something that seems to me totally unrelated to the article??? XD please someone take pity and enlighten me XD

    • neogeno

SAO = Sword Art Online. An anime both loved and loathed by viewers. (possibly more loathed)

AoT = Attack on Titan. An anime both loved and loathed by viewers (possibly more loved)

Now enlightened one, go forth and begin your youtube adventure.

      • Demeanor

Thanks, I’ve heard those names before but never checked them out (yet). Are they related to the article in some way or did the discussions just pop out randomly? :D

        • sonicgamer07

SAO came up cause the concept is about futuristic VR MMOs.

          • Demeanor

            Oh, hence the .Hack comparisons/discussions.
Thank you everyone, now I finally get the picture.

        • neogeno

Well SAO and .hack are related because in the anime they use VR headsets. People wanted to se a .hack game if Sony went forward with this. No clue how AoT got involved. :/

  • WyattEpp

Good. Someone needs to keep Oculus on their toes and keep them from going soft.

(Not that I expect John Carmack to let them rest on their laurels, mind!)

  • videoman190

I rather have it like Accel World’s nero linker!

  • Steven Higgins

I want this to happen. And I want them to include that bracelet-looking move peripheral I heard they were working on a while back. I hope they’ll make compatible RPGs too. I’ve never really been in to racing games or shooters.

    by Japan Studio.

Sony already have a VR headset for the ps3 it’s called Prototype-SR

    • Croix Zapp

Well, i own the Sony HMZ T2 VR headset, pretty awesome imo, but a tad expensive

    • Taylor Koch

That’s not a VR headset. It’s an HMD.

  • Adam Barlow

A mecha game akin to steel battalion utilizing this technology would be awesome

    • brian

Potentially, but some people probably thought Heavy Armor would be awesome.

  • 07thCrow

(O-O) Please let this happen Sony! And if Namco remakes the .hack// series for it; I will give them ALL MAH MONEY!!!

    • Kamakuma

      I will sell my house to Sony and even give up a box of classics for them if they did! ^~^ Okay maybe not all that… But money is good enough for them… I hope. >>;;;

  • Ultimaniacx4

Very likely. I remember reading about this in a rumor article before the next gen was announced. The article codenamed it “Omniviewer.” The same article mentioned something from Microsoft codenamed “Livewall.” A couple months after that this video popped up Looks like it’s finally time for Sony’s announcement.

  • Shady Shariest

Basically what might have happened here:
“Oh, Microsoft is not doing the illumiroom?”

“Btw, we HAVE “been” working on a VR-set *Trollface*”

  • HerosLight

    Occulus Rift?

  • brian

Is that picture an alternate design released by Sony for PS4?

  • Rolling Guy

I’m loving that controller. Them purdy lights!

  • CirnoLakes

Guess they couldn’t just work with Oculus, huh?
