By Spencer . September 5, 2013 . 2:33am

imageSpike Chunsoft, makers of games like Virtue’s Last Reward and Way of the Samurai 4, are developing an Attack on Titan video game for Nintendo 3DS.

Jump has more details about the Attack on Game and confirms it will be an action game and it has 3D graphics. Players will be able to relive Eren’s battles in story mode in Attack on Titan for 3DS.

Attack on Titan is slated for release sometime in 2013.

Well i’m relieved. A 3d game sounds promising at least

  • British_Otaku

Hype. I’m one of the few people here with a Japanese 3DS, but I hope it comes worldwide too or a region free patch comes around.

I’m buying the next few volumes in anticipation.

EDIT: Here are scans which ANN had first

    • Small pic! >w< My eyes aren't good enough to tell how it looks orz

      • British_Otaku

My apologies, I posted the only image I could find.
It wasn’t even the first image that ANN had up on the article.

Surely someone on the Open Thread will come up with something better, we will get something more substantial when the trailers or TGS come around.

For now, I’m pretty convinced that the visual style is a good deal closer and better than the somewhat derpy fan game (still great) and that we can celebrate getting an action game so early in the franchise’s life.

        • Haha, it’s fine, not like your fault the pic is small ww

On closer inspection I think it looks fine graphically tho the models could need some more work as something feels off about them but I can’t put my finger on it.

      • Detrimont

        it looks smooth
that’s really all i can say

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Region free patch wont happen but yeah, I have a japanese 3DS too. HOPEFULLY it’ll be worth getting.

      • British_Otaku

I can only hope there is a region free update, if I didn’t have a Japanese 3DS. I would be pretty annoyed that I can’t play E.X Troopers on my ideal platform (kinda petty eh, it’s on the PS3 and region free even if my system is dead) or any of the anime or niche exclusives.

I can only imagine the ire of thousands of fans who find out that there is a very good game based on a very good series which has even had the manga and anime localised in your country of choice but it never comes.

  • Go2hell66

    please don’t suck

    • Ferofax

If it’s as dynamic as the fan game, it won’t.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

      Highly likely

    • DyLaN

Leave no expectation, then you won’t be dissapoonted.

  • Duc PC-QB

An epic action battle game on tiny 3DS screen ?
    Thats … weird

    • Virevolte

I suppose they will try to use well those two screens to give to the battles a cool feel.

    • British_Otaku

Eh, do we still get comments like this when portables have been pumping out 3D console experiences without compromise since the DS (if you look carefully)?

Where were you when Monster Hunter became a thing on the portables like the PSP and 3DS? Or when E.X Troopers and Gundam Vs Gundam made their mark…

    • Namuro

KH:D3 is an action battle game that allows players to freely dart around the stages, and it seems to work fine, great even! I see no reason that Shingeki couldn’t be done right on the 3DS.

      • Duc PC-QB

Yeah that makes sense. Hope they show the game in action soon

      • Ninastars

As long as the camera is far off enough. KH3D was hard to play because of it sometimes.

        • Namuro

I think the distance of the camera works well for me, but a lot of the times, you have to fight indoors and cramped spaces, and that’s when the camera can get a little crazy. As for Shingeki, it should focus on open spaces most of the time, so there shouldn’t be any problem…I hope.

Well, we’ll see, my friend. We’ll see. I have really high hope for this game.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            The camera is fine.

            Xehanort is a bastard though.

    • IkouKuhn

Then maybe you can say the same thing to Monster Hunter.

  • Namuro

Now I’ll get to use the 3DM on the 3DS!!

  • $61526767

Just hope it isn’t short and can be very satisfying. I can already feel playing as my favorite character, Hanji. Look forward to seeing more!

    • British_Otaku

Only one volume into the manga, so I’m pretty glad that you guys on Siliconera have been nice enough to avoid discussing stuff directly even when on Attack on Titan game threads.

I would hope they have some sort of open challenge mode on the side where most of the ten with the top training results (best terminology I remember), can be played as. Or at least, Mikasa (gotta make ShawnOtakuSomething happy), Eren, Sasha and Armin… But I don’t know who the favourites are or what’s possible at this point…

      • InfectedAI

Multiplayer challenge mode where you massacre Titans until either all the players or all the Titans are dead. That would be a blast to play with friends.

        • British_Otaku

I feel a little bad for recommending an FPS I haven’t played, but it could take an element from (Attack on) Titanfall in a sense.

In that game, when the match is “over”, the losing team have to escape from an airship with the winners pursuing them for a “victory victory” of sorts.

It would be a little less arcadey if there was an option to escape after a certain period (basically, while the townspeople are being secured), but if you managed to survive and kill all of them, the reward is a much higher score. Risk and reward.

These ideas sound really nice but I’m afraid I’ll never be able to play it if it’s local only… I hope they would let me play the multiplayer challenges solo like in E.X Troopers where it’s really hard as you are the only target with no support or team special, but you feel like a badass when you win.

          • InfectedAI

Those are some really good ideas and I probably wouldn’t get much out of local multiplayer only. I wish more games supported local and online play.

          • British_Otaku

Given that this game is only set to be released in Japan, how many 3DS systems are in the hands of that market and how popular the series is, I kinda expect it to be local only. >_>

It would be really nice if it was both, even if the game pulled the same BS that Mario Kart 7 does as I was lined up earlier today with my Japanese system, a bloke had an American system and some guys with a European system hosted a Download Play session which us two (well I had a European 3DS as well, so I was fine) couldn’t join. Some games do this even despite supporting online play between all three regions and Mario Kart DS or Kid Icarus don’t do this.

Online is at the least less segmented on portables by default, not caring about where anyone is even if the regions are behind closed doors.

          • InfectedAI

Region locking sucks, very disappointed in Nintendo for adding that in.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

is it the mikasa idol game that everyone wanted?

    • shafiq95

      DEM ABS!

    • British_Otaku

You posted this shortly after I talked about you with your Mikasa in a response to Jordan below. The bait worked. :O

Or it’s just in your nature to post these….

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        Ha, Why not both?

    • Love me some Mikasa muscle :3

    • ShadowDivz

Why do i keep seeing images of Mikasa as an idol? Is it a reference to her popularity? Or is she just voiced by the same actress as one of the IDOLmasters?

Im not mad, it’s nice seeing her that way, im just wondering WHY.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

read the manga to find out :3

        • Vash bane

          ah a new chapter out?

      • Namuro

        Here it is.

        • ShadowDivz

The fact it’s canon and not some meme just blew my mind.

        • British_Otaku

Wait… It’s canon and not a silly meme? I’m in for a treat when I catch up.

I already liked Mikasa from the little I’ve read.

  • The human gummi bear game! I’m excited.

  • Zikrayrus “Zikk” Dis Pear

Sorry to intrude but wasn’t Way of The Samurai 4 made by Acquire and published in Japan by Spike Chunsoft?

  • s07195

Relive Eren’s battles- more like relive his defeats when in human form, only to have the rest be giant battles.

    • GH56734

      Err.. spoilers.

    • InfectedAI

      Goddamnit. Thanks for the spoiler.

      • s07195

        Oh, sorry there. >.>
Though the manga and the anime have been out for some time. I myself am only making conjecture, since I’ve only watched 16 episodes of the anime or so, and haven’t seen him doing anything else.

        • InfectedAI

You spoiled what happens to Eren. Some people aren’t very far into either the show or the manga. So please avoid posting major spoilers.

  • Engi3Piece

in all honestly if we do decide to get this, it probably be a year or two after it is released in japan. since Funimation is getting ready to dub it sometime later next year (don’t quote me on this its a rumor floating around). so they can dub the game with the English cast.

    • GH56734

Or they won’t bother, like with 90% of anime games that aren’t One Piece or Naruto. The PS2 days when games like this were brought overseas are over :(

      • TheGameTagerZ

A lot of PS2 japan only games were never brought over here. I’d like to know which games you are referring to.

        • British_Otaku

Specifically talking about Naruto and One Piece (I would have said Naruto and Dragon Ball personally, but I’m going with what GH56734 said)…

As for PS2 Naruto games, we got both of the Uzumaki Chronicles, all five Ultimate Ninjas (yes, it counts even if America doesn’t get it as long as it gets localised – it even had English subtitles). So the PS2 Naruto games have a 100% localisation record in a sense and it’s near perfect for the GBA, DS, PSP, GameCube and Wii as well.

As far as PS2 One Piece games, we missed Round the Land and Fighting for One Piece, but still got Grand Battle Rush as “Grand Battle”, Pirates’ Carnival, and Grand Adventure. The other systems, the rates are a good deal lower, I’m willing to bet it was largely because of the distance between us and Japan in the series and how the games tended to be cut for us and in one case (One Piece on the GBA) exclusively made for us with 4Kids writing, but surprisingly good mechanics.

We didn’t miss out on much.
If you are talking about Cowboy Bebop games or Gurren Lagann games? Yes, we got zero. Bleach? We missed a huge number on everything but the DS iirc to a point (apparently something about international rights).

          • TheGameTagerZ

Naruto and One Piece games make up a small number of former Japan only anime games compared to the rest like Jojo, Cowboy Bebop, Bleach like you said, One Piece Grand Battle 3 and Rush (The US version cut out everything that made Grand Battle Rush a good game), Fist of The North Star, Blood + etc. I could list a hell of a lot more but they would probably be too obscure. My point is even in the PS2 days it was more or less the same if not worse when it came to localizing (at least for me).

          • British_Otaku

Sure. I would say we are in a similar place to the PS2 days as well.

I would count One Piece Grand Battle 3 simply as it uses a big enough amount of the resources from it, even if it is a bastardised version of it. If it was nearly original like the GBA game, yeah, it doesn’t count as anything. >_>

We did miss out on a lot outside of our bubble which gets LOTS of coverage and aired on children’s TV. Still I wouldn’t focus on Japan missing out on Ben 10 or Adventure Time video games, nor will I be surprised when Baccano, Ouran High School Host Club, Gurren Lagann and Dr Slump get DS games which are left in Japan.

Sadly, it’s just how timing, popularity and rights holders work out. Grand Battle 3 was messed up because 4Kids wanted the games to match their anime.

  • the_rain

If they can add a tower defense game as a mini game that would be great. I think AoT would fit that genre.

  • Sardorim

I was kinda hoping for a Mikasa mode with 110% more badassery than the other modes combined.

    • Göran Isacson

Word. Make Mikasa the star and the game can actually be about killing titans.

  • fyi1191

How many times did Eren actually participate battles?
I hope the game ain’t that short.

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

I think you have the magazines confused as Attack on Titan isnt in Jump (which Jump?). Should be changed to Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine.

  • dimka

If it comes out in 2013, how come Play-Asia still has no preorders open for it?

    • British_Otaku

They will release information when they feel like it and they already made their decisions internally. Chances are after TGS, we would find out.

  • Caleb

Glad to see more action games for the 3DS.

  • 60hz

    i’m expecting mediocre at best.

    • British_Otaku

That’s what you should expect, I remember hoping that Soul Eater’s games were good, I haven’t played the PS2/PSP fighter but basically the whole line up including the Wii and DS despite Square Enix publishing the stuff is mediocre at best. There is a good reason why Dragon Ball games come here, there is demand and they usually meet some sort of standards… >_> Licensed games are a crapshoot.

That said, I would love to have a brilliant game to praise as the first console/portable video game, to not say that I know a fan game on the same franchise or Minecraft creations better by many degrees.

      • 60hz

for sure… to clarify i may be expecting mediocre but deep down i’m hoping for greatness lol

    • Beat

Well, the 999 games are good, so maybe it’ll work out…

      • British_Otaku

The Zero Escape are visual novels and we all know how capable Chunsoft and Uchikoshi are in that field. This is a licensed game and an action game, it’s a whole different field.

Spike have developed simulations of Dragon Ball Z (Budokai Tenkaichi 1-3, Raging Blast 1+2, Ultimate Tenkaichi and DBZ for Kinect), however the last engaging and fulfilling one from them which still had notable flaws on release was released in 2007 on console (or 2010 on portable – need to try Tag Team). >_>

  • InfectedAI

2013? Wow, either this is going to be a rushed cash grab or it was already in development for a long time before it was announced. I really hope this makes it to the west, but it’ll probably stay in Japan.

  • TheGameTagerZ

Well I have a Japanese 3DS so this will be fun. Glad it isn’t a visual novel.

  • Göran Isacson

Gotta admit: not too sure how good this game can be if it’s about playing Eren. Like, what are the controls gonna be, A to cry, B to flip the hell out and scream a lot?

Like, video games are about being empowering. Attack on Titan is about crushing all your hopes, one by one. While a game about that could be really awesome, it would also be Nintendo hard and most likely not appeal to a very wide demographic without completely going against the spirit of the story.

    • British_Otaku

That’s why a lot of us thought it could be a visual novel about sacrifice and choices (akin to The Walking Dead by Telltale Games?) especially considering the pedigree… Uchikoshi with his Zero Escape and Ever17. Chunsoft in general have a fine library of sound novels too including 428 (40/40 Famitsu if that still means something).

Games don’t need to be uniform in how they treat the “hero” and the “monsters”. The experience in Devil May Cry is completely different to Shadow of the Colossus.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a fatigue meter and body states which can lead to freezing up, vomiting among other things. I get the feeling that Attack on Titan has the selling power to make it regardless of it being a little challenging, after all one of the biggest series over there is Monster Hunter where any of your characters are lumbering and clumsy in comparison to any other video game character but in a natural way.

      • Göran Isacson

Gotta admit, that would be a VERY cool way to go about things. Just not sure how high the odds for it is…

    • Guest

imo, the game should be about 3dm, going titan and that’s about it – sure cutscenes for all that emotional crap but leave the game part to the 3dm action sequences… it’s like that hulk game where you ran around as bruce banner… aint nobody got time for that! yeah it works in the comics but who wants to be banner when you can be the hulk??? Who wants to be full of angst when you can swing through the forest slicing titan neck and avoiding crazed skinless armored giants and sprinting intelligent mammoth women!?!?!?

  • katamari damacy

I’d prefer it to be exactly like Way of the Samurai, where absolute freedom of choice was paramount even if it meant you killed story characters early and screwed yourself.
Imagine just being a normal scout soldier, advancing in rank, and leading a group of guys, XCOM Declassified style with permadeath for yourself and your squad. All while operating parallel to the manga, but not actually being Eren himself. It would lend to a much more open story with far more replayability while respecting the ‘canonical’ parts of the story.
